What now for the ‘blue half’ of Manchester?

The story of Carlos Tevez will no doubt go down in the folklore of English football as one of the most bizarre and intriguing tales in the modern history of the game in this country. A tale that began with his stunning arrival at West Ham in 2006 is now set to end after 5 years of transfer sagas, key goals by the bucket-load, ownership questions, city-crossing experiences… you name it, Carlos Tevez has been involved in it.

But enough eulogising, the man is not dead. In fact, far from it. He is currently taking part in the Copa America in Argentina, which upon arriving at and reuniting with his daughters and wife Vanesa, he has taken the decision that his time in England is over. So, what now for the blue half of Manchester?

On the day in which he sealed the transfer of Gael Clichy from their top-of-the-table challengers Arsenal, Roberto Mancini must have been quietly confident for the coming season. He has been rapidly approaching his goal of having two quality players for each position within the squad, and was looking to add another winger, possibly Udinese’s Alexis Sanchez or Arsenal’s Samir Nasri if rumours are to be believed. A sale of those deemed surplus to requirements such as Wayne Bridge and Roque Santa Cruz and decisions on the futures of players like Shaun Wright-Phillips and Emmanuel Adebayor would be carried out in the coming weeks now that the players are returning from holidays, but other than that the squad was looking settled for the season ahead.

And then came the news that Captain Carlos was looking for a way out of the club, and Mancini’s hopes for a calm (relatively, for City) summer went hurtling out the window, with the Argentine sure to follow.

City’s summer now rests on finding a replacement, as it is safe to say the current crop of strikers at the club are not at the level Mancini needs or wants. The South American trio of Felipe Caicedo, Jo and Santa Cruz will be told to look elsewhere as they have all fallen so far out of favour with the manager that it would take a resurrection of Biblical proportions to get back in the team. Moves for Craig Bellamy and Adebayor to Celtic and Real Madrid respectively seem to be more a case of when not if. The self-proclaimed ‘second best player in the world’ Mario Balotelli still has a bit to learn before he can usurp Messi as player numero uno, but he will stay at City for the time being, as will Edin Dzeko, whose start to life at the club cannot really be used to judge him just yet, but this is set to be a defining season for him in the Blue’s team.

The current state of affairs only really leaves City with the two main strikers, and while that should satisfy Mancini in so far as he plays 4-4-3 with two wingers flanking the striker, it is highly likely that he will be in the market for a new centre forward.

A few options have been bandied about in the media recently, the club strongly linked with a move for Samuel Eto’o even before the Tevez statement. It was suggested that Inter Milan were interested in the perpetually want-away Argentine and that there were hopes of a swap deal being concluded, not for the first time in Eto’o’s career, although Inter had stated that they were unwilling to sell their star striker.

An almost like-for-like alternative would be Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero or Napoli’s Ezequiel Lavezzi. Both from Argentina, both strong and fierce competitors, Aguero is the better finisher and the more prolific scorer but Lavezzi has a more bullish style akin to that of Tevez. Aguero has stated that he is definitely leaving this summer, and despite an offer from Juventus being discussed by his club, he refuses to make any decision until after the Copa America. According to the Lavezzi’s agent, President of Napoli Aurelio De Laurentiis has said that, “No player is not for sale,” suggesting that the door will be open should they get the price they want. Aguero is the more straightforward option, as he has a minimum fee release clause thought to be around £42 million, and while some clubs may baulk at this it is certainly within the City budget of ‘practically infinite’. The only real issue is how the club sells the City of Manchester to another player used to sun, sangria and siestas.

Whether this appeases the fans or not is one thing. Whether the fans even care about Tevez’s departure after half a year of ‘will he-won’t he’ is something entirely different. Either way, City supporters are going to be in for another bumpy summer of speculation. Buckle up.

Roll up! Roll up! Final big summer spending event for football!

As the clock counts down on UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations coming into effect, many a club seem to be spending big money like there’s no tomorrow. In England alone this summer, we have already seen massive money being spent on transfer deals, and indications are there’s more to follow. So are clubs seeing this as a final chance to spend big, before they have their unmetered purse-strings cut by the powers that be?

Thus far Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have all been involved in, or are linked with, massive summer deals. Indeed, Manchester United have already spent close to £60 million and Liverpool, if you count January’s transfer window when Kenny Dalglish took charge, have spend close to over £100 million. On the continent Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Juventus and Roma have also been involved in, or linked with making big signings. Until this current transfer window closes, it shows no sign of slowing down.

The financial years ending 2012 and 2013 will be the first financial years to be assessed and come under UEFA’s scrutiny, leaving any club spending this summer, less than a full year to do what they need to do, in order to meet the requirements. Some clubs have already started this process – whilst continuing to spend (or threaten to spend) big. Selling the naming rights of their stadium for a massive fortune, one of the more ‘enterprising’ ways, to circumnavigate the rules thus far.

However, whilst the spending spree continues at its current pace, it is worth noting that for every massive purchase made, there is an equal one being received – thus helping the selling club balance the books. The imposed UEFA situation then, is probably the sole reason for such a busy period; with players who may not normally be available, possibly being considered if it helps the club in meeting UEFA’s stipulations.

UEFA say they aren’t worried by the busy transfer activity that’s happened around the continent during the last two transfer windows. But it led them to curiously publish a statement on their own official website stating as such. So, are they really worried? ‘UEFA is aware of the recent transfer activity across Europe and is confident that clubs are aware of the nature of its financial fair play regulations which require them to balance their books.’ Surely this serves as a, not so subtle reminder, to clubs that they better be prepared when the time comes. UEFA were also keen to point out, again, that they are not stopping clubs from spending money, just require them to balance the books.

So enjoy this summer’s transfer speculation, and massive or ridiculous (or both) transfer deals whilst you can. It may not be seen on this scale again.

Bolton eye up Wright-Phillips

Owen Coyle is preparing a bid for Shaun Wright-Phillips to replace injured star Chung-Yong Lee reports the Mirror.

South Korean Lee suffered a double leg fracture against Newport County on Saturday, which will keep him out for 10 months.

Coyle had planned to spend his remaining transfer funds on two attackers to offset the loss of Johan Elmander and Daniel Sturridge but Lee’s horror injury has forced him to do a U-turn.

The Bolton boss has now turned his attentions to Wright-Phillips who would be a like for like replacement.

Talks are set to be opened with a view to bringing the diminutive winger to the Reebok Stadium either on loan or on a permanent deal.

A temporary deal with the option to buy at the end of the season is a more attractive proposition for the Trotters.

One sticking point for Wanderers could be the wages he is on at the Etihad Stadium which may prove to be a problem.

However with the offer of guaranteed first team football at Bolton it’s thought that Wright-Phillips would be open to taking a wage cut.

The winger is way down the pecking order at City with manager Roberto Mancini unlikely to use him in big games this season.

Six of the Best – Greatest Solo Goals Of All Time

In light of the launch of the new football gaming phenomenon that is ‘Goaldash’ I decided to look at the six greatest solo goals of all time.

Footballers around the world have graced the game with many fantastic solo goals. Most include mesmeric runs around defenders who just fall at their feet whilst others may include one or two slices of luck. But these are all goals that fans will never forget…

1. Diego Maradona

This stunning effort in the 1986 World Cup is a goal few fans will ever forget, especially the English who were on the receiving end of a goal that often tops the ‘best of’ charts. Whilst the Argentine may also be remembered for another infamous strike, this one is by far the greatest solo goal of all time.

[youtube -rW-lK9F6TU]

2. Ryan Giggs

Giggs’ individual goal in 1999 was definitely a sign of the greatness to come from one of the Premier League’s most talented players ever. Taking on and beating the whole Arsenal defence is not an easy task but Giggs managed it with deadly ease and this goal will be fondly remembered as one of the defining moments in the English game.

[youtube quI_LkMj4HI]

3. Lionel Messi

Any list of the greatest solo goals would not be complete without a strike from the master of turning defences inside out, Lionel Messi. The Argentine is the current king of the spectacular and this goal against Getafe in 2007 sums up why Messi is the world’s greatest footballer.

4. Michael Owen

Whilst this goal may not be as mesmeric or spectacular as others, the way in which a young Michael Owen introduced himself onto the world stage with his amazing goal was worthy of a mention. Owen attacked the Argentine defence all by himself and stunned the 1998 World Cup with a sublime finish.

[youtube fV7XxkqLjDE]

5. George Weah

Again this goal doesn’t include fantastic skill but Weah’s ability to run from his own penalty box, past a handful of defenders and then calmly slot the ball into the corner deserves a place in the best solo goal charts. He did get a couple of slices of luck along the way but it was still a fantastic effort from Weah for AC Milan against Verona in 1996.

[youtube MMnR1QM5Te4]

6. John Barnes

Another fantastic individual goal that was partly one of the greatest solo goals for Barnes fantastic individual effort but also the setting in which he scored it. Barnes took on Brazil and beat them at their own game, dodging past defenders with ease to score this unforgettable goal in 1984.

So how does Goaldash work?

So what is Goaldash all about then?

Bored of playing the Lottery? Failing every week on the Pools? Then why not give ‘Goaldash’ a go – a football gamble with a difference.

‘Goaldash’ is a fabulous concept which fuses the Lottery format with pre-chosen football fixtures. Whereas you may use birthdays or your own favourite numbers to pick your six numbers, with ‘Goaldash’ you need to use your foresight of the Beautiful Game to select the six teams that are likely to score the quickest in the pre-selected 24 fixtures.

It only costs £1 a pop to enter and you have the chance to win a million pounds, every given week.

All you have to do is scour the 48 teams and pick out the 6 teams that are likely to score the quickest on the Saturday afternoon. The matches are chosen from the Premier League, the Football League, as well as the Scottish divisions therefore you will have plenty to work out and strategise before you make your selections.

Playing the Lottery has just got fun, especially as your odds are a damn sight greater.

Fancy your chances? Fancy winning £1million pounds? Why not give it a go!

Scholes questions Mancini’s decision

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has questioned Roberto Mancini’s decision to banish Carlos Tevez from the Manchester City first-team, and feels the omission will benefit the rest of the Premier League.

The Argentina international refused to come off the bench against Bayern Munich in the Champions League in mideek, and Mancini told the press that Tevez’s time at the club was finished.

Despite the striker’s petulance, Scholes feels City are a better team with Tevez playing.

Manchester City set to question Tevez

Carlos Tevez is set to attend an enquiry with Manchester City officials on Monday, as the Premier League club try to get to the bottom of the incident in the Bayern Munich Champions League game.

Citizens boss Roberto Mancini has claimed that the Argentina international refused to come off the bench at the Allianz Arena whilst his team were 2-0 down against the Bundesliga giants.

The South American forward has denied these accusations, but has been suspended for two weeks by the club as they look to clarify the details of what actually happened.

City HR staff and lawyers are set to quiz Tevez on what happened on Monday, according to Sky Sports, with the attacker’s future in England in jeopardy.

Tevez handed in a transfer request over the summer, stating he was unhappy at The City of Manchester Stadium, but the Premier League team failed to find a suitable buyer and he was forced to stay at the club until January at least.

Due to the bitter taste this has left, and the form of strike pairing Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko, Tevez has not had much time on the pitch this season, and looks increasingly likely to leave the side once the transfer window opens in the new year.

Blackburn Rovers 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur – Match Review

Rafael Van Der Vaart scored two superb goals to hand Tottenham victory against Blackburn at Ewood Park to further increase the pressure on Rovers boss Steve Kean.

The classy Dutchman scored in each half to hand Tottenham their sixth win in seven games which keeps them in the hunt for fourth place also continuing his hot streak in front of goal. Mauro Formica had given Rovers fans hope after he equalised but they were once again left frustrated as their side were outclassed by Spurs in every department. The Ewood faithful vented their frustrations in the direction of Kean with several protests, posters and banners calling for his exit despite it being only his 30th game in charge since taking over last November. Their dissatisfaction is justified though with Kean presiding over six wins during a reign that has seen the club slump to the foot of the table.

Despite their winless run stretching to four games on the back of last weeks 1-1 draw with QPR the home side were bight in the early exchanges with Junior Hoilett going close firing the ball over Brad Friedel’s crossbar after a jinking run. Tottenham threatened themselves and youngster Jason Lowe produced a superb block to deny Gareth Bale before Gael Givet thwarted Emmanuel Adebayor. Spurs were far from their best but they needed only 12 minutes to break the deadlock with Van Der Vaart finishing off a delightful move. Adebayor sent the galloping Walker away down the right before cutting the ball back for the Dutchman to finish past Paul Robinson. The visitors were now in the ascendancy and should have been two up minutes later only to be denied by some fine goalkeeping from Robinson who was alert to keep out Bales cross the nicked off Martin Olsson. Rovers rallied and were looking dangerous from set pieces with Christopher Samba’s height causing problems and when he came to meet a Morten Gamst Pedersen free kick the ball fell to Formica who showed great feet to work space and drive the ball past Friedel.

Spurs threatened again before the half was out with Luka Modric seeing his 25-yard strike turned around the post by Robinson before Hoilett threatened at the other end testing Friedel with a stinging strike. The scoreline remained level going into the second period until Van Der Vaart popped up again to put Spurs into the lead for the second stroking the ball home from 20-yards after picking up a loose ball. Rovers weren’t going to go down without a fight continuing their aerial assault and should have had a penalty after Formica was fouled by Benoit Assou Ekotto following confusion with Friedel. The veteran American keeper showed he hasn’t lost any of his agility despite slowly poking into his forties superbly tipping Samba’s header over the bar. Substitute Yakubu then failed to covert a teasing Olsson cross as Rovers supporters intensified their protests at the final whistle as Kean failed once again to guide his team to victory.

Arguably the best thing Alan Pardew did at St James’ Park

Newcastle United have surprised everyone this season and sit third in the league going into the November international break, with Alan Pardew putting together a hard working, talented side that are confident of beating anyone in the division. 25 points from 11 games is a stunning return from the side that sit just one point behind the Champions and are comfortably in the Champions League places.

A summer of signings and speculation was captivating for a neutral as St James Park was once again the home to controversy and negativity. The summer began with the shock departure of captain and former top scorer Kevin Nolan to Championship side West Ham as he once again linked up with former Toon boss Sam Allardyce. The fee is still undisclosed but though to be around £5million, Nolan went cheap in the Geordies eyes and doubts began to fill the supporters’ heads.

The outspoken midfielder Joey Barton was the first to slam the club for this transfer policy and he soon found himself in the reserves and not having a future at the club after comments made about the clubs hierarchy. Pardew made his feelings clear, that he wanted Barton to stay in the reserves until he felt he was committed to the North East club once again. After seemingly been forgiven, Barton played in the opening game of the season against Arsenal and was once again in the thick of the action.

Just days later Barton was released formally on a free and with interest high in the aggressive midfielder, QPR snapped him up on a five-year-deal and his time at Newcastle was at an end. The Geordie fans clearly appreciated what Barton had done for them and gave him a standing ovation when Newcastle travelled to QPR just weeks later.

Both Barton and Nolan were considered two of the best players in the Newcastle side last season, hard working, goal-scoring midfielders that are not easy to come by in the English game. However, the attitudes of the players and the ego that was building around them could have been a valid reason for Pardew getting rid of the players during the summer.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’left’]

Nolan scored 30 goals in his 91 games for Newcastle, making him a valuable member of the side who on to be captain when they returned to the Premier League two years ago. His top moments will have been lead by a hat-trick against rivals Sunderland in October 2010. Nolan publicly criticised the clubs sacking of much loved manager Chris Hughton before Pardew came in and this may have been a point that Nolan did not let go of in the summer.

Barton became a first team regular last season and the supporters loved his aggressive, passionate attitude that was clear for all to see. His off the field comments and actions did not go down well with the club’s board and management however, and he was often getting into trouble with the FA about his controversial posts on Twitter. It was eventually them comments that left him looking for a new club.

The former West Ham and Charlton manager, Pardew,  has built his reputation on gathering hard working, team players that will work 100% every game causing minimal fuss along the way. Taking West Ham from a mid table Championship side to Uefa Cup football in three years, bringing in Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano on the way, it is fair to say Pardew has been successful in his fairly short managerial career.

His shrewd transfer business has been the main reason for his success; both at West Ham and now at Newcastle, as the departure of Andy Carroll in January followed by Barton and Nolan in the summer have proved a catalyst for great results, form and team spirit. The need to replace such players was obvious and fantastic signings such as Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye have come in and been excellent in the first quarter of the season, with Ba’s goals firing the side up the table and Cabaye’s composure in midfielder taking over the role of Barton and to a degree Nolan too.

The team spirit at St James Park is clear to see and the unbeaten Magpies will look to extend that run after the international break when they visit Manchester United, Manchester City and host Chelsea in the space of three weeks. Tough games that will really show the quality and spirit of Pardew’s side, but even if the results do not go to plan, Newcastle will still be above their expectations going into the busy Christmas period and January transfer market, where do not be surprised if two or three more shrewd deals happen at St James Park.

Darren Fletcher forced to take break

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher will take an extended break away from the game, as the club have revealed that he is suffering from a chronic inflammatory bowel condition.

The Scotland international missed two months at the end of last term and the club’s pre-season trip to North America due to the illness, before returning to action.

However, the Premier League champions have revealed that Fletcher will be given time to return to health before training or playing again.

“On behalf of Darren Fletcher, Manchester United wishes to announce that he is taking an extended break from football for health reasons,” a United statement reads.

“Over the past year he has had several absence periods which we have attributed to a viral illness in order to respect his right to medical confidentiality. Darren has, in fact, been suffering from ulcerative colitis (a chronic inflammatory bowel condition) for some time preceding this.

“Whilst he was able to maintain remission of symptoms for a considerable period this has proved more difficult recently and Darren’s continued desire to play and his loyalty to both his club and country has probably compromised the chances of optimising his own health and fitness.

“He has therefore accepted medical advice to take an extended break from the demands of training and playing in order to afford the best chance possible of achieving full remission once again.

“We request that his privacy is respected and hope that the removal of the additional stress associated with speculation regarding his health will also aid his recovery,” it concluded.
