Gary Lineker: Net worth, wife, salary, age, MOTD, HMRC tax incident & more

From being one of England's best-ever international goalscorers to one of the most well-known presenters on British television, Gary Lineker has made quite a career for himself.

To many, nowadays, Lineker is most recognised as the presenter of Match of the Day on BBC One.

Football FanCast has decided to take a deeper dive into his accomplishments, failures and what made him the man he is today.

Who is Gary Lineker?

Gary Lineker is a widely known figure in sports media. He presents BBC's Match of the Day program on Saturday nights, as well as presenting various international and domestic games that are aired on BBC.

He first made a name for himself as a player, turning out for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Leicester City and Barcelona, as well as being a prolific goalscorer for England at international level.

The former professional footballer was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame, as well as being awarded an OBE for his services to the sport.

How old is Gary Lineker?

Gary Lineker was born in Leicester, England. His date of birth was 30th November 1960. This currently makes Gary 63 years old.

What is Gary Lineker's net worth?

Gary Lineker's wealth is estimated to be around £30 million.

His football career will have treated him relatively well financially, but his sports media career has really stepped things up with multiple roles and sources of income.

The presenter has an endorsement deal with Walkers Crisps, which earns him roughly £1.5 million per year.

As well as this, the Englishman presented Champions League football for BT Sport, where he reportedly collected £3 million a year. He also has roles with the BBC, presenting on Match of the Day, various domestic cup games and international tournaments.

Gary Lineker's yearly salary

In 2022-23, Gary Lineker was revealed to be the highest earner at the BBC. He received a whopping take-home pay of around £1.35m.

As mentioned above, he also brings in around £1.5 million per year through his endorsement deal with Walkers.

Gary Lineker's wife

Gary Lineker is actually single at this moment in time, but his ex-wife goes by the name of Danielle Bux.

He married Danielle in September 2009, but the marriage only lasted six years, and they split in early 2016.

But the pair still get on rather well and were even spotted on holiday together in Ibiza, as well as attending Wimbledon last year.

Where does Gary Lineker live?

A little bit personal, but every celebrity's home can be viewed online nowadays.

It is believed that Gary currently resides in Barnes in West London, with his house situated alongside the River Thames.

The mansion is thought to be worth a whopping £4 million.

You may actually notice his living room from a Walkers advert and a couple of interviews he's done on live television before, or, of course, his podcast with Micah Richards and Alan Shearer.

How long has Gary Lineker been on Match of the Day?

It's almost a part of everyone's Saturday to sit down at around 10.30pm and watch all of the day's football highlights on Match of the Day. Of course, the analysis isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it just wouldn't be the same without Lineker, who effortlessly brings banter and unbiased opinions on incidents and matches, which makes the show that extra bit special.

Interestingly, before becoming a presenter on Match of the Day, Lineker was actually an analyst on the show himself. He hasn't looked back since, and over 24 years later, he is now the longest-serving host of the show after taking over from the legendary Des Lynam.

Is Gary Lineker leaving Match of the Day?

Don't worry, you can relax, Gary Lineker's plans to potentially leave the show have now been abandoned.

It was rumoured that Jermaine Jenas might be the new host of Match of the Day with Lineker possibly departing the role at the end of his current deal in 2025. However, it's been reported that the BBC are closing in on a new deal with the presenter, which will see him earn lots more money and take him to 2029 on the show's hotseat.

What Gary Lineker said about Qatar

When Lineker was hosting the BBC's coverage of the Qatar 2022 World Cup during the opening game between Qatar and Ecuador, things didn't start very well as the presenter took a slight dig at the hosts in his opening monologue:

"It’s the most controversial World Cup in history and a ball hasn’t even been kicked.

"Ever since FIFA chose Qatar back in 2010, the smallest nation to have hosted football’s greatest competition has faced some big questions.

"From accusations of corruption in the bidding process to the treatment of migrant workers who built the stadiums where many lost their lives.

"Homosexuality is illegal here, women’s rights and freedom of expression are in the spotlight; also, the decision six years ago to switch the World Cup from summer to winter.

"Against that backdrop, there’s a tournament to be played, one that will be watched and enjoyed around the world. Stick to football, say FIFA – well, we will, for a couple of minutes at least."

Why Gary Lineker was suspended by the BBC

Back in March of last year, Lineker took to his personal X account to write about a video in which home secretary Suella Braverman unveiled plans to stop migrants crossing the Channel on small boats.

And he continued, stating: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.

“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”

It didn't stop there, either, as he stamped down on his position, stating that he would continue to speak up for the “voiceless” after a number of MPs took offence to his posts on X.

This is what led to his temporary suspension from the BBC, as they released a statement stating that he will not be returning to his long-time presenting role until they have got an "agreed and clear position on his use of social media".

However, the broadcaster giants ended up backing down and reinstating the presenter after backlash from pundits across the industry and fans all over social media.

Clubs Gary Lineker played for

Gary Lineker enjoyed a very successful football career both for club and country. He made 436 appearances, scoring 226 goals and laying on eight assists for five different domestic clubs.

His international career was just as impressive, as he appeared 80 times and bagged 48 goals along the way.

During his playing career, he won Footballer of the Year twice, five different top goalscorer awards in different competitions, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one FA Cup, one Spanish Cup, three Community Shields, was awarded an OBE in 1992 and inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.

The clubs he played for were Leicester City, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona and Nagoya Grampus.

What happened between Gary Lineker and Lee Anderson

If there's one thing you need to know about Gary, it's that he won't back down. Especially on his personal X account.

Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson sparked up a bit of a challenge for Gary Lineker as he wanted him to come to his Ashfield constituency and run against him for parliament. This was on the back of Lineker's comments about Suella Braverman.

Anderson stated: "It looks like the BBC's highest-paid publicly funded stars can continue to bite the hand that feeds them. Lineker is laughing all the way to the bank while attacking our Home Secretary. Maybe he should stand for parliament, I hear Ashfield Labour are looking for a candidate."

However, it didn't stop there, as Gary later went on to mock the MP on his official X account after a back-and-forth regarding the government's Rwanda policy, with him even suggesting Anderson won't be in work come the next election.

Gary Lineker poo incident

When you've got a dodgy belly, there's very little you can do about it, which is what Gary Lineker found out during the World Cup in 1990.

The now-infamous incident during England's 1990 tournament opener against Ireland occurred when Lineker decided he couldn't make it to the toilet, so let out some human waste on the pitch.

There were early signs that Lineker ignored, as he started to feel some bowel problems the day before, but with it being the opening game of the tournament, he was desperate to play.

If he had the decision to make again he may have opted to sit out, as he was left rather embarrassed.

He stated: "It was like, 'Oh my god', but it was like everywhere. There's a bit, if you ever see the footage, where Gary Stevens comes over and asks what's wrong. And I go, 'I've s*** myself'. I just didn't know what to do. Thank God I had dark blue shorts on that day. I'm shovelling it out and rubbing myself on the grass like a dog."

Gary Lineker HMRC Tax incident

Gary Lineker was embroiled in a battle with HMRC over a £4.9 million tax bill.

HMRC had informed the presenter that he should have been classed as an employee, despite him operating as a freelancer for BT Sport and the BBC.

He took it upon himself to appeal to a tribunal to fight back against the action, which is designed to clamp down on tax avoidance by so-called disguised employees.

And it appeared as if it was just HMRC trying to get more money out of the former English striker, as a judge ruled that Lineker was a freelancer who had direct contracts with the two broadcasters, therefore the legislation did not apply to him.

'Stinks!' – Outrage as new angle shows VAR missed clear Bukayo Saka handball just two seconds before controversial Harry Kane penalty incident as England get lucky at Euro 2024

A new angle has shown that VAR had missed Bukayo Saka's handball just two seconds before the controversial Harry Kane penalty incident at Euro 2024.

  • England were awarded a controversial penalty by VAR
  • But it missed Saka's handball in the buildup
  • Further outrage over VAR's role
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Xavi Simons put the Netherlands ahead in the seventh minute, capitalizing on an error by Declan Rice. This early goal set the stage for a fiercely contested match, with England scrambling to regain their footing. However, 11 minutes after the Netherlands' opening goal, England found themselves back in the game under controversial circumstances. Saka, manoeuvring skillfully into the penalty area, had his initial shot blocked. But the rebound fell to Kane, who missed the target but was subsequently fouled by Denzel Dumfries. VAR intervened, and after a review, the referee awarded a penalty to England and the England skipper converted the spot-kick to level the score.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, a shred of new video evidence has surfaced, showing that just before Kane's foul, the ball appeared to touch Saka's hand. As Saka's blocked shot rebounded, it seemed to brush his right hand and possibly his left arm before Kane attempted his shot. This potential handball was not spotted by the VAR officials, further fueling the controversy surrounding the penalty decision.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Sports writer, Ewan MacKenna, uploaded a video of the handball incident on and wrote: "Not only was VAR not in position under guidelines to tell ref to look at monitor for Kane penalty, it also neglected to rewind two seconds to show Saka handballing it into his path. I really don't think pros looking at TV can be that incompetent. Stinks. #england #netherlands."

Adding to the controversy was the appointment of Felix Zwayer as the match referee. Zwayer, who had previously served a six-month ban for his involvement in a 2005 match-fixing scandal, faced scrutiny over his suitability for officiating such a high-stakes match. UEFA had reviewed and supported his appointment, but the penalty decision reignited debates over his credibility and judgment.

In the 90th minute, another controversial decision arose when the Netherlands felt they were denied a rightful corner after John Stones headed the ball out. Instead, Zwayer awarded a goal kick to England. The Three Lions capitalized on this decision, launching a swift counterattack that culminated in Ollie Watkins scoring the winning goal.

Nottingham Forest now expect to sell Nuno’s star man for club record fee

Nottingham Forest could be set for a major windfall in the coming transfer windows after it has emerged that the club hierarchy are already expecting to receive a record fee for one of their "outstanding" Premier League stars.

Forest finding their feet under new boss Nuno

After parting ways with club legend Steve Cooper, Forest have struggled for results under new boss Nuno Espírito Santo. Their 2-0 win over West Ham in their most recent outing was their first Premier League win of the calendar year, and they continue to look down nervously at the relegation spots.

As things stand, they sit four points clear of Luton Town, with the Hatters occupying the final relegation spot. Between the two sides sit Everton, with the Toffees only above Luton on goal difference. But with 40 points considered the benchmark for guaranteed Premier League survival, Nuno's side are still in need of a string of results to ensure that they do not spend next season in the second tier of English football, especially with a potential 10 point deduction looming should they be found guilty of breaching financial fair play regulations.

Despite the lack of results, there have been some standout performances at the City ground, and one man in particular has been catching the eye.

Reds chiefs expect to eclipse Johnson sale

Undoubtedly currently the jewel in the Forest crown, young defender Murillo has made a massive impact in a short time at the club.

Murillo has reportedly previously caught the eye of Manchester City, but opted for regular Premier League football with Forest and his short stint in the Premier League has left him no shortage of suitors. Still just 21 years old, the Brazilian centre-back has been hailed as an "outstanding" talent by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, and placed in the same bracket as exciting Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite.

“I remember being a young lad going in myself at Liverpool and it’s an unforgiving position, I had to go to full-back for the next three or four years and then go back to centre-back, so you can see the quality we have”, he told Monday Night Football.

“(Jarrad) Branthwaite has been outstanding, Murillo I think has been outstanding too.”

Now, The Telegraph report that the Midlands outfit are already expecting Murillo to become their new-record sale, overcoming the summer departure of Brennan Johnson. Johnson joined Tottenham for £47.5m, but there is an expectation that Murillo will now be far more expensive than that should anyone wish to try and prise him away from the City ground any time soon.

It would represent a major return on the £11m investment that Forest made on the young defender, and is further evidence of the good business that has been done by the club in recent windows, though there have too been some mistakes.

Under contract until 2028, Forest will be under no pressure to part ways with Murillo unless they are in danger of breaching financial fair play again, something that they are currently under investigation for alongside Everton.

Liverpool lead race to complete "incredible coup" for "very strong" player

As FSG prepare to map out what the post-Jurgen Klopp era at Anfield may look like, they are reportedly leading the pack to sign one of Europe's most sought after talents.

Liverpool's search for a midfielder

Despite the incredible success the side have enjoyed this season, it is clear that Liverpool are in need of reinforcements in the summer. Whilst new arrivals have come in and done well, it is clear that they have yet to determine what the future of their midfield looks like.

Following the recent departures of both Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, the Reds have struggled for consistency in the middle of the park. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have performed well so far however, there is uncertainty as to who else FSG see as the immediate answer in midfield.

Alexis Mac Allister for Liverpool

It has previously been reported that Liverpool are in for Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala however, they will face stiff opposition from current Premier League champions Man City. Inter Milan's Nicolo Barella is another name linked, but they would once again be entering a bidding war for his signature.

Liverpool lead race for Serie A star

According to Sport Witness, reports out of Italy are suggesting that Liverpool are leading the race to sign Teun Koopmeiners this summer. The outlet states that the Reds are favourites alongside Juventus to secure the services of the Atalanta man for next season.

It is suggested that despite the Dutchman boasting many "admirers in the Premier League", Liverpool are sitting "in the front row", to get a deal over the line. If the Reds are to beat the Turin outfit to the 26-year-old's signature, it is reported that he could cost £51million, however this fee has the potential to drop to £43million further down the line.

Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

It will be a case of Liverpool waiting to see what competition they have for the player before putting an offer in, but losing out on Koopmeiners would be a massive missed opportunity for Jürgen Klopp's men.

From the above table, it is clear that Koopmeiners can go toe-to-toe with the Reds' current crop of midfielders. Where the Dutchman differs from his Anfield equivalents is his versatility. Able to produce a strong defensive output whilst still contributing on the goalscoring front makes the Atalanta man a very interesting prospect for Liverpool.

Whilst it is clear that Koopmeiners would be a good pickup for the Merseyside outfit, it will be no easy task to beat Juventus to his signature. The Dutchman has been linked with a move to Turin for a while with Inter Milan legend Beppe Bergomi saying that he "is a very strong left-footed player and would be an incredible coup" for the Italian giants.

Regardless of where he plays his football next season, it is clear that Koopmeiners is destined for greatness at the highest level of the European game.

Manchester United founded a youth team back in 1938 amid an ambition to create side composed entirely of local players. And while times have changed drastically, the club has continued to include at least one home-grown player from the academy for every single first-team game in the 80-plus years since. The idea of utilising young talent became an unshakeable philosophy under Busby from the late 1940s onwards and was revived in spectacular fashion by Ferguson in the late 1980s. Ethan Wheatley became the 250th academy graduate to debut for the senior side when he came off the bench in a Premier League game against Sheffield United in April.

Leeds have a "magic" talent out on loan who could aid their Gnonto concerns

Leeds United will go into Friday night's big clash away at Sheffield Wednesday pumped up to collect another victory in the Championship, with Daniel James' sublime solo strike enough for the Whites to beat a resilient Stoke City side 1-0 last match.

James' spot in the XI looks secure off the back of this vital goal, battling back from injury issues to remind everyone at Elland Road that he's the main starter down the right wing.

This could be bad news for Wilfried Gnonto, who had started to breathe life back into his up-and-down Whites career with James sidelined – the Italian attacker helping himself to four goals in February playing in the spot freed up by the Welshman being out.

Gnonto could even push to leave Elland Road once again if he tumbles down the pecking order, with Daniel Farke keeping an open mind to the possibility of reintroducing this fringe talent into the first-team set-up when he returns from his loan move if the 20-year-old does decide enough is enough.

Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto.

The player to ease Leeds' Gnonto concerns

Ian Poveda has become an instant fan favourite since making the switch from West Yorkshire to South Yorkshire in January, joining Sheffield Wednesday amid a gargantuan attempt to stave off the Championship relegation zone.

Poveda might well only have one assist next to his name from seven Owls games so far, but he's got the hardened masses at Hillsborough purring nonetheless over his technical brilliance.

The skilful 24-year-old winger successfully completed three dribble attempts last match against Plymouth Argyle, twisting and turning defenders for fun with his side winning this big basement battle clash 1-0 courtesy of their new Colombian loanee's unpredictability on the ball.

Even having a goal dubiously ruled out in that clash due to a potential offside, Poveda could well fancy sticking it out permanently in his new surroundings when the loan stint is over.

The South American attacker's contract is up with Leeds at the climax of t he campaign with a high number of potential suitors – alongside the Owls – no doubt wanting to sign Poveda on a free transfer off the back of his bright spell with Wednesday to date.

Still, the door might well not shut completely on Poveda returning to Leeds and dazzling the Elland Road faithful if a new deal can be secured at the final hour. It must be said, however, that one final chance for the winger feels far likelier should the Yorkshire side not secure Premier League promotion.

What Farke thinks about Ian Poveda

Farke has admired Poveda's trickery when commenting on the 24-year-old winger before he made the short journey to South Yorkshire on loan, stating that 5 foot 6 forward possesses a "touch of magic."

Therefore, the German manager could still see him as a useful figure to have in and around his Whites camp to unlock opposition defences with a moment of sublime skill.

Leeds forward Ian Poveda.

Leeds would also be able to breathe easier over the prospect of Gnonto finally upping and leaving the building, freeing up a space for Poveda to come back and feel wanted after being left on the Whites fringes for the majority of his Leeds career to date.

Poveda has shone in spurts for the Championship promotion chasers in the past – helping himself to an assist on just his fourth-ever Leeds appearance back in 2020 – but has never been given the time and patience to truly blossom as a dynamic talent at Elland Road.

For the time being, however, Leeds will just be overjoyed that Poveda is showing off his excellence at Hillsborough after feeling unwanted in Whites quarters.

Back in West Yorkshire, Gnonto will hope he can still have moments in the spotlight to shine himself away from James' reintroduction into Farke's XI.

Whereas, it will be a significant boost for Eddie Howe's team as the defender is expected to make an immediate impact and is considered one of the most significant potential signings of this transfer window.

"There are no specifics" – Mystery Rangers injury could be "months"

An injury expert has provided the latest update on one of Rangers' January signings, admitting he could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Rangers facing fixture pile-up after Dundee match abandoned

The Gers are now one point behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race, but only because their clash with Dundee over the weekend was postponed. Philippe Clement and the club are thought to be furious over the decision for the match to be abandoned, as it will now create an even more hectic fixture pile-up to end the season, with TV scheduling expected to create problems.

Injuries are something that could easily end up defining who comes out on top in the title battle and Rangers are having to juggle a host of problems at the moment, with another match now needing to be squeezed in on top of it all.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

January loan signing Oscar Cortes is one such individual who is sidelined currently, acting as a real blow for Clement after bringing him in to add squad depth, and he joins the likes of Danilo, Kieran Dowell and Todd Cantwell in being out, highlighting the issue the Gers are having to tackle particularly in their attacking ranks.

Granted, the manager has a good squad full of strong options, but the race with Celtic is so tight that the eventual champions could be decided by the finest margins. Now, a worrying update has emerged regarding one stricken Rangers ace.

Rangers hit with concerning injury update

Speaking to Ibrox News, Dr Rajpal Brar admitted that Rangers winger Oscar Cortes could now be out for "months" through injury, rather than weeks, even though the specifics of his recent surgery remain a total mystery.

This is a massive blow for Rangers, considering Cortes arrived as an exciting January addition who was hopefully going to add even more attacking threat to the side.

A goal and assist apiece in his first three Scottish Premiership starts represented a promising opening to life at Ibrox, but he has now been struck down for an extended period of time. Not having the 20-year-old available until May effectively rules him out for the season, which would be such a bitter pill to swallow.

The hope is that Cortes can still play a part in Rangers' season, but realistically, even if he is back in May, he is unlikely to be match fit enough to play a big role.
