Miguel Almiron slammed by plenty of Newcastle fans

Well, it seems that a number of Newcastle United fans are just starting to lose faith in Miguel Almiron as the attacker continues to struggle.

Many of the supporters hoped that his goal for Paraguay over the international break would inspire the January arrival against Aston Villa on Monday night.

However, it proved to be another disappointing performance from the South American, who only managed one shot before being substituted late on, according to WhoScored.

Almiron has now made 13 Premier League appearances for the Magpies this season without contributing a goal or an assist.

More worryingly, though, Monday’s clash with Villa proved to be the attacker’s 23rd outing for Newcastle, and he has not managed a goal or an assist.

Something surely has to give when it comes to Almiron’s spot in the side.

And it does appear that many of the club’s fans are fast losing patience, as can be seen by the selection of tweets below:

Earlier this month, a number of Newcastle fans insisted that they were very much behind Almiron despite his troubles, but it remains to be seen whether that is still the case.

Liverpool: Fans slam James Pearce comments on Jurgen Klopp successor

Jurgen Klopp has done what can only be described as an outstanding job at Liverpool since joining in 2015.

When he took over from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015, the Reds had won just four of their first 11 matches in all competitions that campaign. Now, they lead the way by a huge 25 points from Manchester City – the biggest such margin in the club’s history – and they lifted the Champions League last season as well.

Having already spent five years at the club, he has a contract lasting four more years, meaning that his current deal will come to an end in 2024. It remains to be seen whether he signs a new contract with the club, but if he doesn’t, someone else will need to take over.

Liverpool reporter James Pearce has been talking about who should replace him, and he believes that one of Steven Gerrard, Pep Lijnders or Mauricio Pochettino should be given the job once the 52-year-old departs.

The Reds fans have been reacting to the quotes, and they have absolutely slammed the journalist – one supporter even said he has a “lack of basic football knowledge.”

They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Everton: Fans react to Marouane Fellaini’s €3m goodwill gesture

Former Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini has lent €3m to his former club Standard Liege to help the club through the pandemic.

The Belgian first division side reportedly asked their former player and Belgian international Fellaini to invest money and help ensure their survival as it faces being relegated to the amateur ranks.

Fellaini, who began his professional career with Standard before moving to the Premier League and then China, has joined another former player of the club, Axel Witsel, in helping the club get through their current financial difficulties.

Witsel, who plays his club football for Bundesliga side Dortmund, has invested €1.5m into the project, according to reports.

Standard had their professional footballing license removed in April after the Belgian football association found they had not paid wages and bonuses owing to players.

The club are said to have lodged an appeal against the decision, which is due to be heard on May 5.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, fans heaped praise on their former midfielder…

Celtic fans react to Chris Sutton’s tweet on Gareth McAuley

Celtic were crowned Scottish Premiership champions for a ninth successive time last week after the SPFL board cut short the season due to the pandemic.

It’s not come without it’s controversy, however, despite the Parkhead giants holding a 13-point lead with only a handful or so matches still to play.

Former central defender Gareth McAuley ended his career at Rangers in 2018/19 and has spoken out about the title claiming it is ‘tainted and hollow’ to which legendary striker Chris Sutton has ripped into him on Twitter, causing plenty of Bhoys fans to be in hysterics.

Sutton won four Scottish Premiership titles during a six-year reign in Glasgow and now does punditry on BT Sport.

McAuley goes on to explain that the title winners can’t be compared to the original nine-in-a-row winners or Rangers’ version from the 1990s.

Newcastle United: Fans laud takeover update from Henry Winter

Plenty of Newcastle United fans have been lauding an update on the prospective takeover in the North East from Henry Winter after he shared his latest thoughts on the matter on his official Twitter page.

As per The Times journalist, he claims that the Saudis, referring to Amanda Staveley’s consortium on the buying side side of the deal with Mike Ashley on the other, remain the favourites to get their bid over the line, and added that money talks loudest with the Premier League.

Winter says that Staveley and the billionaire Reuben brothers in the consortium bring credibility, and suggests that supporters of the Tyneside club deserve a decision.

The writer also hinted that a group from the United States with ties in Great Britain have a long-term interest in the Magpies, and have the funds in place to potentially swoop in as they are watching the delay with keen interest.

These members of the Toon faithful lauded the update as Winter seems to be a man that they trust:

Home Park

Key information about Home Park

The new and redeveloped Home Park was built in 2001 and is now, fittingly, the home of Plymouth Argyle. The ground is located in the Milehouse area of the city, next to Central Park, and is also known as the Theatre of Greens with green fields and parklands on three sides of the stadium.

Its current capacity stands at 17,150 and the pitch measures 106m by 68m. It also has no running track nor undersoil heating and the surface is covered with fibrelastic rootzone grass.

The stadium’s record attendance was set back in 1936 with 43,596 supporters watching the home side’s Second Division clash versus Aston Villa.

A history of Home Park

Even though the newest and present version of Home Park dates back to 2001, the stadium was indeed used much earlier than that. Originally, it was the home of the now-defunct Devonport Albion rugby team between 1893 and 1898 but following their departure after a dispute with the owner, the stadium would not be used for three long years.

In 1901, Argyle Athletic Club would settle into the Theater of Greens after obtaining the lease and even though they wanted it to be used for athletics, the lease owners preferred football and staged various trials with Argyle Football Club, eventually gathering a much larger crowd and going into a completely different direction to what was first envisioned.

In 1903, the club changed its name into Plymouth Argyle and became a professional side that very year. Their first competitive match staged at Home Park was against Northampton Town on 5 September 1903 with a crowd of 4,438. At first, it was a very basic ground with only 2,000 places officially available on nothing more than one wooden grandstand with the other three sides of the stadium surrounded by slag heap banking with a waist-high fence.

However, things started to change in the 1920s when the club joined the Football League – the wooden structures were replaced with larger and more modern stands and concrete terracing was also added on the other three sides. They also added a roof and the new stand would also house the dressing rooms and club offices. With more and more people flocking in, they finally recorded their highest attendance ever in 1936 when Plymouth Argyle welcomed Aston Villa in front of 43,596 people.

And then, World War II hit and following heavy bombing, the stadium had to be rebuilt in the post-war era with several drastic changes taking place. Some of those included the erection of a new Grandstand, floodlights, new roof and the increase in capacity over the years with more seats constructed. In the 1990s, the stadium was largely unchanged but at the turn of the millennium, it would experience modernisation once again.

Even though they had plans to move to an entirely new stadium, that idea was abandoned and instead, they set about completely revamping Home Park. That new plan was announced in 2000 and would be carried out in two phases, only first of which was completed in the end and it involved the redevelopment of Devonport End, Lyndhurst Stand, and Barn Park End.

In 2006, they finally purchased the land and became sole owners and the following year, Home Park was converted into an all-seater. Three more projects followed suit in the next months – the Mayflower Terrace was replaced with a temporary, unreserved seating that had a capacity of 3,500, a new public address system was installed, and the stadium’s last iconic floodlight towers were dismantled after 54 years of service.

More improvements were on the way in recent years but nothing too big apart from the redevelopment of the Grandstand in 2018 and a new supporter’s’ bar being erected in place of the old one which was called ‘Far Post Club’. The club store façade was also given a new look in October 2019.

Manchester United: Red Devils braced for transfer battle for £40m wonderkid who shares agent with Bruno

Manchester United are still interested in signing Sporting Lisbon sensation Nuno Mendes, reports say.

The Red Devils are braced for a transfer battle for the wonderkid, amid interest from Liverpool and Juventus – to name but a few.

According to Calciomercato, Man United have maintained their interest in Mendes, who has attracted attention from a number of leading European clubs.

The Italian outlet claims United will face stiff competition from Liverpool, as Jurgen Klopp is ‘bewitched’ by the youngster, while Juventus could call upon Cristiano Ronaldo to swing the situation in their favour. Juve view Mendes as a long-term successor to Alex Sandro.

Mendes, 18, shares an agent with Bruno Fernandes, who moved to Old Trafford from Sporting on a five-and-a-half year deal in January.

The teenager has emerged as one of Europe’s hottest prospects after earning his first senior start in June and he has featured in every game ever since.

His contract, which will run out in 2025, includes a £40m release clause. However, it is likely the Lions will accept a fraction of their asking price for the academy graduate in the summer.

The versatile player has predominantly played on the left of the midfield, although he can also be deployed in the defence.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is closely monitoring the situation, as the club legend received a glowing reference from Nani, who has tipped his teammate to achieve bigger and better things.

It is hardly surprising he has received so much attention, considering his young age, but he could be too expensive for the Red Devils.

United are hardly short of options in his preferred position, as Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams are pushing each other for a place in the starting lineup, and Solskjaer may decide to turn his attentions elsewhere.

United fans, do you think Ed Woodward will sign Mendes in the summer? Let us know down below!

Kassam Stadium

Key information about Kassam Stadium

Kassam Stadium was finished and opened in 2001 and is now the home of League One’s Oxford United. The ground is located in the Blackbird Leys area of the city and is officially owned by one of Kassam’s Firoka Group companies.

Its current capacity stands at 12,500 and the pitch measures 102m by 71m. The surface of the field is covered by natural grass and it has no undersoil heating installed nor a running track surrounding it.

The highest attendance ever recorded at Kassam Stadium is 12,243, which occurred for Oxford’s final match of the 2005/06 League Two season, ending in a 3–2 defeat by Leyton Orient, sending the hosts into relegation.

A history of Kassam Stadium

Back in 1995, Oxford United decided it was time for them to finally vacate the old Manor Ground and replace it with a venue more fitting of their ambitions. Not even a full year later, the construction of a new 16,000-seat stadium situated in the Blackbird Leys area of the city commenced and would be finished by the time the new millennium rolled in.

However, the erection of their new home did not exactly go as smoothly as they had hoped since they were hit by various different issues along the way. Most of their problems stemmed right from the financial side of things and with the contractors not receiving their pay, the construction was postponed and wouldn’t be completed for the following four years.

In April 1999, the club was taken over by Firoz Kassam and after a long and unpleasant turmoil regarding money, relegations and subsequent promotions, Oxford United were back with their heads above water and the stadium, originally to be called Minchery Farm but changed to Kassam Stadium following the arrival of new ownership, was finally completed in 2001.

The first game ever played was actually a friendly clash against Crystal Palace on 4 August, with the hosts managing to scrap a win on penalties following a 1–1 draw. The first official competitive clash, however, was played on 11 August versus Rochdale in the Football League Third Division. This time, Oxford would lose 2–1 in front of a crowd of 7,842 supporters.

In March 2006, the stadium was unofficially renamed to the United Stadium by the Oxford United Supporters’ Trust, which was supposed to be a sign of protest against the owners that were taking the club in the wrong direction. Despite this, the ground is still largely known as Kassam Stadium.

Between 2012 and 2015, rugby union club London Welsh also called it home but they soon returned back to Old Deer Park following their relegation from the Premiership at the end of the 2014/15 season.

Originally, the stadium had been planned to have 15,000 seats, but in the end, only three out of four stands were erected with one short end remaining open, meaning the final tally sits at 12,500.

Tickets to watch Oxford United at Kassam Stadium

All tickets to watch Oxford United at Kassam Stadium can be found on the club’s official website. The price for an adult ticket ranges from £20 to £28, depending on the stand and the category you choose.

Oxford United also offer season tickets as well as memberships that can get you discounts on single games as well as over the course of the season. More information can be found on the aforementioned website.

Glasgow Rangers: Kris Commons believes club should make move for Martin Boyle

With the transfer window open, many have been discussing what players would be good for Glasgow Rangers to sign to improve the quality of their squad. Kris Commons believes one player who should be on the radar of the Gers and Old Firm rivals Celtic is Martin Boyle.

Commons, who won the SPFL title five times whilst also making 12 appearances for Scotland, scoring two goals, per Transfermarkt, believes that Hibernian winger Boyle would be a great acquisition and also believes the Gers might be able to get him on a cheap deal.

Speaking in The Daily Mail, via Glasgow Live, Commons said: “Having played with Martin Boyle for a few months during my time at Hibs, I can vouch first-hand about just what a talented boy he is. My advice to Hibs fans would be quite simple. Enjoy him while you can. Given that he’s only got a year left to run on his contract, bigger clubs are bound to be looking at him.

“I know for a fact that Neil Lennon rates him highly and thoroughly enjoyed working with him during their time together at Easter Road. I also don’t see why the likes of Rangers shouldn’t at least have a look at him and explore the possibility of making an offer.

“With just a year left on his contract, Boyle wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg. Especially not with the financial problems Hibs are facing. He could be available at a knockdown price. I reckon a bid of around £250k would be enough to at least ask the question of Hibs.”

It’s hard to disagree with the Scotsman on how cheap the Gers could get the player, he is valued at £900,000 on Transfermarkt, but this price could definitely be lowered as he is on the last year of his contract.

The attacker also has a very good record at Hibs, as he has scored 36 goals and picked up 36 assists in 189 appearances for the Scottish side and at the age of 27, he still has many seasons in which he can improve and score even more in Scotland, per Transfermarkt. Including his goals at Hibs, he has managed 78 goals and 61 assists in 341 appearances.

Glasgow Rangers need to add to their attack, Jermain Defoe, who is 37, will not be around for long and also has an injury at the moment, Alfredo Morelos supposedly will be on his way to Ligue 1 soon, whilst the club are looking to sell winger Jordan Jones, so Boyle would be a good addition.

The attacker can play across the front three, and also had made appearances in friendlies and a World Cup qualifier for Australia, scoring two and assisting one, per Transfermarkt.

All this, combined with the fact that he is a proven SPFL player highlights that he would be a very good signing for the Gers if they looked to acquire him.
