Northants overseas makes impact on debut but hosts escape from 119 for 5 to post solid total

Rishi Patel drives on the way to a century•Getty Images
An impressive century from opener Rishi Patel rescued Division Two leaders Leicestershire on the opening day of their Rothesay County Championship against Northamptonshire. In conditions that largely favoured the bowling side, Patel’s 105 from 189 balls was key as Leicestershire recovered from 119 for 5 to total 304 at the Uptonsteel County Ground.Australian paceman Harry Conway took 5 for 68 on his Northamptonshire debut, with veteran county stalwart Ben Sanderson finishing with 3 for 62 on his first appearance of the season after injury. Their side are six without loss after facing five overs at the close.Patel hit 14 fours and a six in a performance that combined flair with patience and there were useful contributions from Leicestershire’s lower order, led by Ben Green’s 39, after Northamptonshire skipper Luke Procter had chosen to bowl first. That decision had looked an easy one to make with a green pitch and warm, slightly hazy conditions at the start of play, but it took until the second hour for his bowlers to make inroads.Patel and Sol Budinger had given their side a flying start, putting on 58 in 15 overs, but the latter was undone on 30 by a fine delivery from Procter that squared him up and flew off the shoulder to second slip.Sanderson, back in action after a knee injury, made his presence felt by taking a wicket with the first ball of his second spell and following it quickly with another. Rehan Ahmed tickled one behind down the leg side to fall for a second consecutive duck before Lewis Hill, who had an escape on nought in the previous Sanderson over, perished via a thin outside edge.Harry Conway celebrates a wicket on debut•Getty Images
Leicestershire had lost three wickets in the space of five overs and after Patel, who has already been out with a dislocated thumb this season, needed treatment for a blow on the same hand, they were relieved to reach lunch with no more damage at 95 for 3.Patel recovered to complete his first fifty of the season but another double setback for his team soon followed as Conway, in the first of four scheduled Championship appearances, removed fellow Australian Peter Handscomb and allrounder Ian Holland in his first spell of the afternoon.Handscomb was leg before, stepping across his stumps, while Holland was caught by a leaping Lewis McManus, the ball glancing off his raised bat as he tried to let it go past the stumps.Patel and Ben Cox then mounted a fightback for Leicestershire, runs flowing for a while. That changed as Conway returned before tea, producing his best spell of the day and the end of a sixth-wicket partnership that added 74 when Cox gave the simplest of return catches, the ball looping up off a leading edge.Conway troubled Patel, too, but not enough to deny him what was an excellent hundred in the circumstances, the Leicestershire opener moving closer with a six driven down the ground off Calvin Harrison, the legspinner on loan from Nottinghamshire, before reaching three figures with a drive to the extra-cover boundary off the same bowler.Patel was dismissed three balls after tea – leg before to the medium pace of James Sales, an infrequent bowler in first-class cricket these days, whose appeal after the ball had beaten the batter’s inside edge prompted umpire Sue Redfern, after some deliberation, to raise the finger. It was a breakthrough that might have hastened a rapid end to the innings but Leicestershire bat deep Green and Logan van Beek added another 60 runs before Sanderson claimed the eighth wicket with the second new ball via a stunning catch at backward point as the latter departed.Green followed Rehan earlier in being strangled down the leg side and Josh Hull was trapped on the crease as Conway wrapped things up with his fourth and fifth wickets.
It’s been an up-and-down start to the year for Newcastle United, and they suffered more adversity on their first Champions League appearance of the season when welcoming Barcelona to St. James’ Park.
Newcastle’s European campaign began with defeat. Marcus Rashford was at the double, scoring two spectacular strikes after a closely-contested opening half that will have left Eddie Howe rueing missed chances.
The manager made the bold decision to leave Nick Woltemade out of the starting line-up after the 23-year-old scored a debut winner against Wolves last weekend. Anthony Gordon deputised in his place.
It might have proved a shrewd call but for some shoddy finishing, with Harvey Barnes culpable of that and more on Tyneside.
Harvey Barnes let Howe down vs Barcelona
With Gordon up top, Barnes reprised his role on the left flank. It’s not been the finest start to the season for the 27-year-old, who has gone five games across the Premier League and Europe without registering a goal involvement.
And against the slick and stylish La Blaugrana, he toiled, not only missing a good chance to score but failing with every one of his crosses and not even attempting to win a duel, statistics courtesy of Sofascore.
Jules Kounde whipped in a neat delivery for the Three Lions star, who powered home with a header from around 12 yards out. Barnes should have closed down the French defender, who had space and time to find his target.
Woltemade will expect to start against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday, and Barnes will be sweating over his starting berth, with the goalscoring Gordon sure to be eyeing up a return to his natural position out on the flank.
However, Barnes wasn’t the only one who flattered to deceive, with Joelinton failing to pack a punch in the engine room.
Why Joelinton must be dropped
At times, it can seem inconceivable that Joelinton should be dropped from Newcastle’s starting line-up, so powerful and influential is the South American in the centre of the park.
But it doesn’t always work, and he was reduced in stature against silky opposition.
Chronicle Live weren’t too unforgiving in their post-match assessment, handing the Brazilian a 6/10 rating, but they did acknowledge he lacked his usual bite and brutish efficiency against a well-oiled and cohesive La Blaugrana midfield.
However, such analysis was perhaps generous. Joelinton left plenty to be desired against the Spaniards.
Joelinton lost the ball seven times, having taken 27 touches across his hour on the field. That equates to marginally under a concession of the ball every four touches, which is hardly the sharp and composed midfield play needed against a team such as Hansi Flick’s Barcelona.
After picking up a yellow card in the first half, Joelinton walked a tightrope, and it showed. He only won three of his six contested ground duels and made just one tackle all evening.
All told, it hasn’t been a fantastic start to the season for the hulking midfield presence, though he did catch the eye against Wolves last weekend and now Howe will expect him to return to form.

With more technically dynamic options such as Joe Willock and Lewis Miley waiting in the wings, perhaps it would be a good idea to place the 29-year-old on the bench against the Cherries, allowing Howe to freshen things up and ensure his midfield does not become too rigid and predictable in its patterns.
Joelinton is a crucial part of this team, but this is a team of many parts, and players are ready to step up and add different dimensions when the need arises.
In this sense, there’s substance to both Barnes and Joelinton stepping to the dugout ahead of the weekend.

He hurt himself while fielding in the deep in the last over of SRH’s innings

Tim David lasted just five balls against SRH•BCCI
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Tim David picked up an injury while fielding in RCB’s 42-run loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), although he did come out to bat later. While stand-in captain Jitesh Sharma did not have details on David’s fitness immediately after the game, RCB will hope it’s nothing major with the playoffs only five days away.David was fielding at the boundary on the leg side in the last over of the SRH innings when Ishan Kishan swiped a Yash Dayal full toss behind square and David sprinted towards the fine leg boundary. David succeeded in keeping the ball inside the field of play and the batters to just one run, but was seen hobbling off soon after. Jacob Bethell replaced him for the remaining five balls of the over.David batted at No. 8 in the chase of 232 and scored just 1 in five balls before he holed out to long-on in the 18th over as RCB were bowled out for 189 in 19.5 overs.Related
Hazlewood expected to return to IPL for playoffs
Seifert named as Bethell's temporary replacement at RCB
RCB are already fretting about injuries to a number of their key players. Their regular captain Rajat Patidar is recovering from a hand injury and was only fit to bat on Friday. Phil Salt was also not fit until recently, although he returned to action against SRH, and Devdutt Padikkal was ruled out of the tournament earlier this month, to be replaced by Mayank Agarwal.Going forward, RCB will also lose Bethell because of national commitments (ODIs against West Indies) but he will be replaced by New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert before the playoffs.RCB are also expected to have their ace fast bowler Josh Hazlewood back for the playoffs, after a period of rehab on a shoulder niggle in Australia. Hazlewood had flown back home when the IPL was briefly suspended earlier this month but hasn’t returned since because of the injury.RCB slipped to third place after their loss to SRH, which also dented their net run rate. They must win their last league game and hope for some other results to go in their favour to finish in the top two.

Tottenham Hotspur are now racing Arsenal for the signature of a £130m+ attacker, who’s been described as a “true icon in the making”.
Tottenham eyeing new attacking midfielder amid Simons' slow start
It is still very early days, but Xavi Simons hasn’t exactly set the world alight since his arrival from RB Leipzig, most recently failing to create any big chances and completing just one of the four dribbles he attempted in the 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
In fairness, the Dutchman is arguably being deployed out of position, having predominantly been given the nod at left-wing by Thomas Frank up to this point, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink believes the 22-year-old will be a success in north London long-term.
Tottenham now expected to submit £25m+ offer for "special" Brazilian forward
Spurs are poised to submit an opening bid for a new forward, who’s been dubbed a “quality finisher”.
ByDominic Lund Sep 28, 2025
The former striker said: “Simons has only just started, but I like Simons. I really like him. I think he’s going to be a big, big, big success at Spurs. He can play on the left or as a No. 10, but he’s also not scared, and that’s why I like him.”
Lucas Bergvall started in the number 10 role against Wolves, but given that the Sweden international is only 19-years-old, it would make sense to bring in another attacking midfielder.
According to a report from Caught Offside, Tottenham have now joined the race for Real Madrid star Arda Guler, having sent scouts to watch the youngster in action, but there could be competition for his signature, with a number of other big clubs also keen.
Arsenal, Newcastle United, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund are also named as potential suitors for the attacking midfielder, but any of the interested parties may have to shell out a huge fee to get a deal done, with it previously being revealed he is valued at over £130m.
The report makes it clear that Madrid are reluctant to sanction a departure, given that Guler has emerged as a crucial player since the arrival of Xabi Alonso.
Guler living up to his potential at Real Madrid
After impressing at international level in the summer, scoring against the USA and Hungary, scout Jacek Kulig suggested the Turk could go on to be a future star.
Since then, the 20-year-old has gone from strength to strength, picking up three goals and three assists in his opening seven La Liga games, with the starlet establishing himself as a key player for Real Madrid.
Having also been lauded as a “special talent” by scout Ben Mattinson, Guler could be a fantastic signing for Tottenham, but it seems very unlikely that a deal will be possible, given his astronomical price tag.
Root and Crawley got fifties in the chase as India’s six dropped catches in the match proved costly
Matt Roller24-Jun-20251:53
Did we see a refined version of Bazball?
Headingley has become the home of the run chase, and England hauled in a target of 371 to prove it. Set up by Ben Duckett’s dazzling 149, and sealed with a six by Jamie Smith, they romped home in just 82 overs to seal a sixth consecutive win in Leeds – all while bowling first – and to take a 1-0 lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. It left Ben Stokes to breathe a sigh of relief after his decision to field on Friday morning, and India to dwell on the countless opportunities they missed to take control of this Test. They hit five centuries to England’s two, but lower-order collapses of 7 for 41 and 6 for 31 proved costly – as did their six dropped catches. This was a chastening way to start a new era for India, with Shubman Gill’s sparkling first-innings century long forgotten as he reflected on a heavy defeat in his first Test as captain. After series losses against New Zealand and Australia, India have now lost seven of their last nine Tests, and may only have Jasprit Bumrah available for two of the next four on the England tour.Bumrah was borderline unplayable in Australia, taking 32 wickets in the series, but was unusually ineffective after his first-innings five-for at Headingley. He went wicketless in England’s run chase, and was seen off by Duckett and Zak Crawley, whose partnership of 188 in 42.2 overs laid the foundations for a victory cruise despite the lingering threat of rain.3:26
Harmison: Not sure India believed they could get Duckett out
Duckett was sublime, starting his innings slowly before accelerating against India’s weaker links. He was particularly severe on Ravindra Jadeja, whom he reverse swept into submission, and Prasidh Krishna, whose five wickets in the match could not disguise an eye-watering economy rate of 6.28, the most expensive in India’s Test history.England wobbled in the afternoon against Prasidh and Shardul Thakur, but Smith and Joe Root saw them across the line with 14 overs remaining in the final hour. Root was characteristically cool in his unbeaten 53, while Smith took Jadeja for 18 runs in an over, including sixes over square leg and mid-on, to see his team across the line.Duckett and Crawley had reached the lunch break unscathed, battling through probing early spells from Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj before tucking into India’s change bowlers. Duckett cut and pulled with total control until his hundred was a shot away: on 97, he offered a chance when he pulled Siraj to deep square leg, but Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped his third catch of the match.Siraj was furious, and made no effort to hide it. He had drawn Duckett into a verbal battle after drawing an outside edge which skewed away through a gap in the slip cordon soon after lunch, and could only watch in frustration as Duckett reverse swept Jadeja for four to reach three figures, his ~ Test century and his first in the second innings of a match.Duckett punched the air to celebrate and then got back to work, milking Jadeja for off-side runs as he packed his leg-side field. But Prasidh prised the game open from the other end, first drawing an edge from Crawley which flew to first slip, and then nipping one back off the seam to induce a chop-on from Ollie Pope, England’s first-innings centurion.Shardul Thakur got Ben Duckett and Harry Brook back-to-back•Getty Images
Duckett continued to race along, his strike rate edging closer to 100 as he reverse slapped Jadeja over cover-point for the first six of the final day. It took the reintroduction of Thakur to remove him on 149, driving straight to short cover, and when Harry Brook strangled his first ball down the leg side, India were back in the game.Stokes survived Thakur’s hat-trick ball, and saw England through to an early tea with Root for company. After a brief hold-up for a rain shower, Stokes and Root both survived lbw appeals as Gill burned through India’s last two reviews. But with the partnership on 49, Stokes top-edged a reverse sweep straight to his opposite number at short third.Smith strode out at No. 7 as though determined to prove his mettle after an ill-timed first-innings dismissal, and set to work alongside Root. The same pair took England close to the line in a nervy chase against Sri Lanka in Manchester last year; this time, they took them over it with an unbroken stand of 71.Some of Gill’s decisions will come under scrutiny: Siraj went unused between the 41st and 81st overs, while Bumrah did not get the chance to bowl in the final 17 overs of the match. He is only due to play in three of the five matches in this series, and India’s performance suggested their attack will struggle badly without him.The result was vindication of Stokes’ decision at the toss, and means that five of the last seven Headingley Tests have been won by a team chasing at least 250 in the fourth innings. And if this chase was not the white-knuckle ride of the 2019 Ashes, it was a clinical performance which hinted at a more complete, more rounded England approach.
The step up from the Championship to the Premier League was always going to be a challenging one for Leeds United after they won the second tier title in the 2024/25 campaign.
In the last two seasons, all six of the newly-promoted teams have been instantly relegated from the Premier League after coming up from the Championship, which illustrates how big the gap between the two divisions is.
Daniel Farke and the board knew that the squad would have to undergo some changes during the summer transfer window to give the club a fighting chance of avoiding relegation.
With a haul of eight points after seven matches, it is fair to say that it currently looks like the 49ers did good work in the window by signing the likes of Anton Stach, Sean Longstaff, Gabriel Gudmundsson, and Noah Okafor, among others.
Because of the step up in quality and physicality in the Premier League, some of the players who were instrumental for Farke in the Championship have found themselves falling down the pecking order.
One example of that is central midfielder Ao Tanaka, who is currently out of the starting XI and does not look like breaking into it any time soon.
Why Ao Tanaka is not a starter for Leeds
The Japan international was a star for the West Yorkshire outfit in the Championship in the 2024/25 campaign after his permanent move from Fortuna Düsseldorf in the summer of 2024.
Tanaka nailed down a place in the middle of the park, next to Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rothwell, or Ilia Gruev, to end the campaign with 37 starts in 43 appearances, per Sofascore.
The 27-year-old star was a midfield metronome for the Whites. He ranked within the top 2% of central midfielders in the league for pass accuracy (89.2%) and the top 7% for progressive passes per 90 (7.03), per FBref, which shows that he was incredibly reliable and progressive in possession.
Unfortunately, though, the step up in physicality in the Premier League appears to have been too much for the midfielder to deal with, as he has struggled physically and defensively this season.

As you can see in the table above, Tanaka ranks among the worst midfielders in the division in a host of physical and defensive statistics, losing a whopping 76.2% of his duels.
Per Capology, though, the Japanese whiz is the third-lowest earner in the senior squad on £25k-per-week, which suggests that the Whites can afford to keep him as a back-up option.
Tanaka, who has started two matches in the Premier League this season, may have to settle for being a rotation player for Farke due to his lack of physicality, but his low wages suggest that the club should not be in a rush to move him on from Elland Road.
Meanwhile, there is a Leeds flop who earns more than the Japan international, despite playing fewer minutes, and should be on borrowed time in West Yorkshire.
Wage Burners
Football FanCast’s Wage Burners series explores the salaries of the modern-day game.
Illan Meslier has not played a single minute of competitive football in the 2025/26 campaign, and could be on his way out of the club in the not-too-distant future.
Why Leeds need to move on from Illan Meslier
Whilst Tanaka has, at least, started two league games and played in five league matches, the French goalkeeper has not made a single appearance for the club in any competition this season.
Per Capology, Meslier earns £30k-per-week at Elland Road. That is as much as Karl Darlow and Jayden Bogle, and more than Tanaka (£25k-per-week) and Ilia Gruev (£15k-per-week).
The left-footed goalkeeper, per Capology, has earned roughly £7m in wages in his Leeds career, which is due to soar to around £8.5m by the end of the current campaign, on top of the £5m fee that the Whites paid Lorient for his services.
This means that the Leeds flop, who was once dubbed a “massive liability” by journalist David Kent, has rinsed the club for £12m to date, and up to £13.5m by next summer.
The 25-year-old dud was the number one between the sticks for four seasons at Elland Road, including three in the Premier League and one in the Championship, but his underlying data shows that the situation was always heading to where it is now.

Meslier consistently underperformed as a shot-stopper for the Whites and it finally cost him when Farke dropped him from the side at the end of the 2024/25 campaign to make Darlow the new number one.
The Wales international started the last seven games of the Championship season, after Meslier made three errors that led to goals (Sofascore), and Leeds won promotion to the Premier League with him in net.
The summer transfer window, as aforementioned, provided the club with an opportunity to bolster their squad and they brought Lucas Perri in from Lyon to start between the sticks.
This meant that Meslier started the current season as the third-choice goalkeeper at Elland Road. Although he is currently on the bench behind Darlow, whilst Perri is injured.
The 25-year-old is in no man’s land in West Yorkshire because Farke has clearly decided, by the signing of Perri and his use of Darlow, that the Frenchman is not a part of his plans moving forward.
That is why Meslier, who has already rinsed the club for £12m during his time at Elland Road to date, is on borrowed time at Leeds and should be moved on during the January transfer window.
