The Gers have had a nightmare few weeks under the former Southampton boss, from crashing out of the Champions League to then losing star man Hamza Igamane, but could yet enjoy a turning point if they get deadline day right.

The manager himself, meanwhile, once again chose to remain optimistic after his side’s 0-0 draw against rivals Celtic in what was a poor game between two sides that haven’t been at their true best as of yet this season.

Martin is adamant that the 49ers still have faith in his project and that could once again be showcased in the transfer market. With the hours ticking away on deadline day, the American owners are still reportedly eyeing some last-minute deals.

The likes of Youssef Chermiti, for example, are still on Rangers’ radar whilst another deal for a much-needed defensive reinforcement is expected to reach completion.

Rangers expected to sign Cornelius

According to Sky Sports, Rangers are now expected to sign Derek Cornelius from Marseille in a last-minute loan deal. The central defender, who can also play as a left-back, should offer Martin some welcome cover in both areas and potentially the addition that finally helps his side back to winning ways.

As highlighted by the Rangers Journal, Cornelius is particularly one to watch in possession and that should suit Martin’s style of play far more than his current options.

The Marseille man particularly stands out for his progressive passing ability, which is something Rangers have arguably lacked. As much as he is a defensive addition, having a defender who is capable of ending an opposition’s press with one line-breaking pass can quickly turn defence into attack in rapid fashion.

Meanwhile, at 27 years old, Cornelius is not an inexperienced option like Rangers have already signed this summer. He should be able to hit the ground running from the off at Ibrox.

After a summer of chaos at St James’ Park, it has now emerged that Newcastle United actually outbid Liverpool to sign a towering defender before he made his transfer decision.

With Champions League football secured and PIF ready to spend, it looked as though Newcastle were about to enjoy their best summer yet under the Saudi owners. Eddie Howe also revealed his desire to get any business done early. By the time that pre-season got underway, he wanted to have his squad ready to go.

Whilst it wasn’t for the want of trying, the Magpies managed to welcome just Anthony Elanga by the time their pre-season tour arrived and were also handed the news that Alexander Isak wanted out for the first time. The Swede’s supposed injury quickly turned into a transfer saga and one that he eventually emerged victorious.

Newcastle, meanwhile, were left to turn towards the likes of Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko only to be faced with more bad news. Handed rejection after rejection, their plan to have any deals done by pre-season quickly turned into a deadline day panic as Isak left for Liverpool and Yoane Wissa finally arrived to join Nick Woltemade in the Magpies’ fresh frontline.

It just about summed things up that Wissa’s move very nearly collapsed in the dying embers thanks to an admin error, but Newcastle just about managed to avoid a humiliating scenario.

It’s also now emerged that it wasn’t just Ekitike that Newcastle and Liverpool were fighting over during a frantic summer rivalry away from the pitch.

As revealed by Parma CEO Federico Cherubini, relayed by Sport Witness, Newcastle actually outbid Liverpool for Giovanni Leoni before he chose to move to Anfield.

The Magpies’ offer was more “advantageous” than Liverpool’s, but the Italian only wanted the Merseyside club in a verdict that Newcastle fell victim to all summer long.

In the end, Malick Thiaw solved Newcastle’s need for a defender, but there’s no doubt that Leoni would have been an impressive signing. The towering 6’4 defender was described as “complete” by scout Jacek Kulig and is now seen by many as the future of Liverpool’s backline following his summer move.

This is the assessment of Sanjay Manjrekar, who also feels that Gill gives the impression of being someone who will be around for a further 10-15 years while Shreyas Iyer doesn’t.”He [Gill] is batting at the right position to make a huge impact. India are blessed with [a top three] who are also Test batters, so they can play different gears. Yashasvi Jaiswal, when he comes in eventually, is also a Test batter. But he took 28 singles that helped him tick along.”The other thing that was noticeable today was generally when he sees the offspinner he steps out and launches it over long-on, midwicket,” Kumble said. “He didn’t want to take the risk perhaps because of the pitch. He felt that that was the riskier option. Although Miraz is someone he would take on – we have seen it even in Test match cricket. He was constantly looking to just ease through and ensure he was there till the end. Bumrah or Gill – who should be India’s next ODI captain?

There would have been slight jitters in the Indian camp when they slipped from 112 for 1 to 144 for 4 in under eight overs but Gill kept his calm and saw the chase through, which earned plaudits from Kumble.”He’s been brilliant, especially in this format. Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma appears to be out of Thomas Frank’s long-term plans, or so we thought.

The 29-year-old really hasn’t made a great impression since Frank’s arrival at the club this summer, with Spurs’ new boss publicly damning Bissouma for his lateness to training and repeated disciplinary issues.

The former Brighton star is yet to make a single competitive appearance for Frank since he took charge, thanks partly to injury, but it spoke volumes about Bissouma’s situation when he was left out of Tottenham’s 22-man Champions League squad.

Now, if Bissouma remains in N17, he won’t be able to make a single European appearance until after the league phase, if Spurs even make it that far.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Frank has been unimpressed with Bissouma behind-the-scenes, and the consensus is that Tottenham are prepared to sell the £100,000-per-week ace before his contract expires in 2026.

Other reports suggest that Tottenham could even let Bissouma leave on loan, potentially to get his wages off the books for a brief period before he eventually departs for free next year — if Spurs cannot find an outright buyer.

In any case, with the Turkish, Portuguese, Mexican and Saudi transfer windows still open, the Lilywhites still have an opportunity to offload Bissouma outside the UK window deadline.

Fenerbahçe were credited with a serious summer interest in the African, but a move failed to materialise. Galatasaray also held talks to sign Bissouma on loan with an obligation to buy, according to The Mail, and Spurs are believed to value him at around £20 million.

He played a key role in Tottenham’s route to victory in the Europa League final against Man United in May, even starting the full 90 minutes against Ruben Amorim’s side, but Frank’s stance on Bissouma is crystal clear in comparison to Ange Postecoglou.

COMO FOI O PRIMEIRO TEMPO?

A partida começou com o Botafogo tendo mais a bola e buscando jogo. Essa estratégia era prevista pelo Santos, que fechou os espaços da equipe carioca e apostou no jogo rápido, principalmente pelo lado esquerdo, com Mendoza. E foi assim que o Peixe, que sofreu pouco na parte defensiva, conseguiu criar as melhores chances do primeiro tempo. Uma delas terminou em um belo gol. Estreante, Jean Lucas fez um lançamento preciso para Marcos Leonardo, que deixou o zagueiro Adryelson no chão e finalizou na saída do goleiro Lucas Perri. Depois do gol, o Peixe chegou mais algumas vezes, sempre na base da transição rápida, mas não conseguiu ampliar. O Glorioso, por sua vez, teve muitas dificuldades contra o esquema defensivo santista que estava muito bem postado.

E A ETAPA FINAL?

No segundo tempo, a partida se mostrava ter a mesma tônica, mas com o Botafogo querendo mais o jogo. João Paulo fez uma boa defesa à queima roupa, em um chute de Victor Sá. Mas, conforme o tempo ia passando, o Santos se organizou. E assim chegou ao segundo gol, novamente com Marcos Leonardo. O Peixe saiu em transição rápida com Mendoza, Lucas Lima ganhou de Marçal na pressão e cruzou rasteiro para o centroavante marcar. E quando parecia que o Alvinegro Praiano tinha encaminhado a vitória, o Botafogo acordou. Quatro minutos após o segundo gol santista, Tiquinho Soares descontou após uma trama com Victor Sá e Joelinton. Na sequência, Adryelson subiu mais alto que a defesa santista, após escanteio cobrado por Marçal e empatou o jogo.E com 11 minutos de acréscimos, a pressão final foi toda do Botafogo, que teve, pelo menos, três grandes oportunidades para virar a partida. Em uma delas, Rodrigo Fernández salvou em cima da linha um cabeceio que já tinha encoberto o goleiro Vladimir, substituto de João Paulo, que deixou o campo com dores no início da etapa final.

Bowlers will be allowed to apply saliva on the ball in IPL 2025. The decision was taken by IPL after majority of the franchise captains voiced for the change at a meeting with the decision-makers of the tournament at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday.ESPNcricinfo has learned that several captains agreed that the saliva ban, which was adopted by ICC and followed by the member boards across all levels of cricket, was hurting the bowlers especially in not facilitating reverse swing, which has become rare in white-ball cricket, including ODIs where two new balls are used.Gujarat Titans (GT) fast bowler Mohammed Siraj concurred with the captains.”It’s very good for bowlers. It’s excellent news for us bowlers because when the ball is not doing anything, applying saliva on the ball will increase the chances of finding some reverse swing,” Siraj told . “It sometimes aids reverse swing because scrubbing the ball against the shirt will not help (to get reverse swing). But using saliva on the ball will help in maintaining (the shine on one side), and it is important.”The ban on using saliva to polish the ball was first put in place in May 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, as a temporary measure. In September 2022, the ICC made the ban permanent. With bowlers allowed to use sweat to shine the ball, there had been calls from leading voices in the game to allow the use of an artificial substance in place of saliva back then. ومن جهته يطمح الاتحاد السكندري إلى قلب الطاولة أمام الأهلي، واستغلال المباراة كفرصة لتحقيق نتيجة إيجابية تعيد له الزخم، رغم معاناته في ترتيب المسابقة حتى الآن.

ويأمل جمهور الأهلي في الفوز وحصد النقاط الثلاثة من أجل تعزيز موقف الفريق في مواصلة مشواره نحو التتويج بلقب الدوري المصري عن الموسم الجاري.

ويتواجد الأهلي في المركز الرابع بجدول ترتيب الدوري المصري، ويمتلك 18 نقطة في رصيده بعدما فاز بـ5 مباريات وتعادل 3 مرات وتلقى هزيمة وحيدة.

بينما يحتل الاتحاد السكندري المركز السابع عشر في ترتيب الدوري المصري، برصيد 8 نقاط من الفوز بمباراتين والتعادل بمثلهما وتلقى 5 هزائم.

كشف محمد أحمد سلامة رئيس مجلس إدارة الاتحاد السكندري، موقف النادي من تقديم شكوى ضد التحكيم بسبب أخطاء مباراة الأمس أمام الأهلي ضمن منافسات الدوري المصري.

وكان الاتحاد السكندري قد تعرض للهزيمة أمام الأهلي بنتيجة 2-1، في المباراة التي جمعت بينهما بالجولة الـ11 من الدوري.

وقال محمد أحمد سلامة في تصريحات تلفزيونية عبر قناة “إم بي سي مصر”: “سنقدم شكوى ضد التحكيم، وأنا كنت حاضرًا في المقصورة وشاهدت ما حدث، الأمر ببساطة أن كابتن الفريق كريم الديب وهو لاعب مهذب ومحترم كان يتحدث مع الحكم في كرة عادية جدًا تخص خطأ ضد أحد زملائه”.

وتابع: “فوجئنا برد فعل مبالغ فيه من الحكم، لا أعلم إن كان الأمر بسبب لعب الأهلي بعشرة لاعبين فأراد أن يجعل الفريقين متساويان، لا أعلم الحقيقة”.

وبسؤاله هل تعتقد أن هناك نظرية مجاملة للفرق الكبرى كالأهلي والزمالك؟، أجاب: “لا إطلاقًا نحن لا نبحث عن شماعات، ولا نستخدم مثل هذه المبررات، نحن نتحدث فقط عن واقعة محددة حدثت في المباراة، كان من الطبيعي أن يتحدث كابتن الفريق مع الحكم في كرة عادية”.

وواصل: “لكن رد الفعل كان عنيفًا جدًا من الكابتن مصطفى شهدي، لا أعرف هل كان متوترًا بسبب النتيجة أو ضغط الجمهور”.

وزاد: “ركلة الجزاء أيضًا كانت مثار جدل كبير، الكرة اصطدمت بيد اللاعب لكنها لم تخرج عن محيط جسمه، وجاءت فجأة بعد أن غيّرت اتجاهها من رأس شبانة”.

وأتم: “وشاهدنا اللقطة تُعاد عشرات المرات واختلف عليها المحللون، لذلك الموقف كان صعبًا للغاية، خاصة ونحن ننافس في ظروف حرجة أمام فريق كبير مثل الأهلي”.
