Glasner wants Crystal Palace to sign £40m ace as possible Guehi replacement

Oliver Glasner is now pushing Crystal Palace to sign a “warrior” centre-back as a possible replacement for Marc Guehi, according to a recent report.

Crystal Palace’s transfer plans beginning to take shape

The Eagles still remain in the dark about whether or not they will be able to play in the Europa League next season. Due to issues around multi-club ownership, UEFA may make the decision to remove Palace from the Europa League, which would be a huge blow not only on the pitch but in the boardoom, limiting what business takes place this summer.

But while Palace wait to find out the verdict, club chiefs are continuing to work hard behind the scenes to identify players who they think will help them compete both in the Premier League and Europe. Indeed, it came to light over the weekend that Palace have made an ambitious approach to sign Ousmane Diomande from Sporting CP.

The South Londoners have made an enquiry to get an understanding of a potential deal, with the Portuguese club said to be looking to get around £40 million.

Sporting Lisbon's Ousmane Diomande

As well as looking at Diomande, Palace are also lining up ways of strengthening their midfield, and it’s been claimed that Kalvin Phillips is now a genuine target for the Eagles. Phillips is looking to leave Manchester City this summer, but his wages may be a stumbling block.

Glasner wants Crystal Palace to sign Pavlovic

The Eagles are not keeping their defensive options just down to Diomande, as according to The Sun, Crystal Palace are also looking at signing Strahinja Pavlovic from AC Milan.

Serbian defender Strahinja Pavlovic

The report states that Glasner is a big fan of the defender, and the boss believes Pavlovic would be an ideal arrival for European football next season.

It is claimed that Milan value the centre-back around the £40 million mark, but were Palace to make a move this summer, they would look to start the bidding on the cheap, at around £25 million.

Not only could Pavlovic’s arrival at Selhurst Park be seen as adding more competition, but he could also be seen as a player who could replace Guehi. The England defender has been linked with a move away for the last 12 months, and commenting on Palace’s own links to Diomande, reports in Lisbon believe Newcastle are now close to signing Guehi.

Palace value Guehi at least the £50 million mark, so his departure would likely pay for the arrival of Diomande or Pavlovic, who has been dubbed a “warrior” by scout Jacek Kulig, standing at 6 foot 4. The Serbia international has played 19 times in the Champions League and 10 times in the Europa League in his career, so he would be bringing European experience with him should he move to Selhurst Park.

West Brom could soon seal their best £0 signing since Maja

Ryan Mason will be hopeful that his new West Bromwich Albion troops can start the Championship season off on the best possible footing when August comes around.

The Baggies will just have to put the horrible decline in form they suffered at the close of the 2024/25 season to the back of their heads now as a fresh era begins, with Tony Mowbray an unfortunate casualty off the back of West Brom falling out of the playoff spots.

It will also be a clean, injury-free slate for Josh Maja you hope, with the ex-Sunderland marksman missing for all of 2025 to date for the West Midlands side, after a blistering first half of the second-tier campaign.

Maja's rising importance at West Brom

Maja’s name will have rung a few bells for West Brom supporters when he joined the building in the summer of 2023, having been in the EFL limelight once upon a time when rising the ranks at Sunderland.

Whilst he did endure a shaky start at the Hawthorns – as seen in Maja only powering home one meagre Championship goal during his debut season – the free agent capture has since gone on to be a firm fan favourite for supporters of Mason’s men, with the potency he showed at the Stadium of Light coming to the forefront once more.

Now a far more seasoned attacker than his early Black Cats education, with 17 goals fired home for the Wearside outfit before Bordeaux came calling, Maja managed to tally up a lethal 12 strikes for West Brom last season, even as his game-time dried up to only 26 league clashes owing to injury.

West Brom unearthing a lethal finisher for nothing came at the perfect possible time too, considering former main marksman Brandon Thomas-Asante had moved on the summer before the 26-year-old burst into life.

Now, the Baggies’ success in the free agent market could continue with another shrewd move, with the Baggies improving their numbers significantly in one position of the pitch if a Premier League-experienced star were to join Mason’s camp.

West Brom looking at another amazing free signing

West Brom’s golden pick-up of Maja isn’t their only brilliant free signing in recent years, with Jed Wallace also entering the building back in 2022 for zilch. Now, he has 27 goal contributions and counting for the Championship side.

Therefore, West Brom will be confident that their new target will instantly fit in as well, with journalist Graeme Bailey revealing earlier this month that Mason and Co. have Harry Toffolo on their radar after his sad Nottingham Forest exit was confirmed.

Toffolo was a much-loved presence at the City Ground, with this acrobatic clearance off the line last season a standout memory from his Premier League playing days at the club.

But, it’s the 6-foot full-back’s previous exploits in the Championship that will catch West Brom’s eye even more, with Carlos Corberan a big advocate for the former England U20 international when the pair were together at Huddersfield Town, before the Spaniard took on the Hawthorns reins.

Corberan would call upon Toffolo to be both expansive and dangerous in attack – as seen in his nine goals and 14 assists – but also gritty and nasty in defence when needed, with a bumper 30 clean sheets also coming his way across 92 Championship appearances in West Yorkshire.

Labelled as “excellent” by ex-Forest boss Steve Cooper when signing on the dotted line in Nottingham, landing the impressive defender would definitely be seen as another gleaming free transfer akin to Maja’s arrival on the scene, with Mason only having Callum Styles and Gianluca Frabotta at his disposal currently on the left flank of his back-line.

He did suffer from a few promotion near-misses with the Terriers, unfortunately. But, he would surely want to change these fortunes around on the books of the Baggies, with both Toffolo and Maja potentially going on to be key components of a promotion-winning side.

Talks open: Arsenal submit offer to sign "standout" 17 y/o after Zubimendi

After officially announcing the arrival of Martin Zubimendi, Arsenal have reportedly submitted an opening offer to sign an impressive young gem for Mikel Arteta.

Zubimendi: Arsenal move a "huge moment" for career

Stealing the headlines as the biggest signing of Arsenal’s so far, Zubimendi has finally arrived in North London to hand Arteta an instant boost. The Spaniard has seemed destined for the Premier League for some time and after rejecting Liverpool one year ago, he is now set to star at The Emirates next season.

After officially putting pen to paper, the £51m midfielder told Arsenal’s website: “This is a huge moment in my career. It’s the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are.

“I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come.”

Equally delighted to welcome Zubimendi, Arteta then went on to welcome his new signing by saying: “Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team. He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetalooks dejected after the match

“The standard he has consistently performed at over the last few seasons for both club and country is exactly why we are so excited to have him with us. We all welcome Martin and his family to the club.”

The Gunners aren’t done there, however. Far from it. Amid rumours that they’re now chasing a deal to sign Noni Madueke, those in North London have also reportedly submitted an offer to sign another English gem.

Arsenal submit opening offer to sign Tyjon

Whilst Zubimendi will provide Arteta with an instant boost this summer, the Spanish manager has also set his sights on future stars in North London. According to Alan Nixon via his Patreon, Arsenal have now submitted an opening offer worth £1m to sign Igor Tyjon from Blackburn Rovers, who have, in turn, rejected that offer.

The Championship club reportedly want over £1m to sell their 17-year-old talent and, with talks ongoing, they may just get their wish. Of course, compared to the likes of Madueke and the aforementioned Zubimendi, Tyjon won’t steal the same headlines but there’s no denying his talent.

Personal terms agreed: Arsenal ready talks to sign "fearless" £50m target

The Gunners are pushing on with their deal.

ByTom Cunningham Jul 6, 2025

After making his debut for Blackburn at just 16 years old last September, the centre-forward earned impressive praise from former manager John Eustace, who told reporters: “Igor has been a standout young player since I have been at the football club.

“He had a fantastic pre-season. He’s just played for England in the week. I was delighted to give him his debut today. He has worked, very, very hard. He’s a 16-year-old boy and we have to remember that. He is certainly one for the future.”

Bell the Brave hero but Cross scrambles tie for Superchargers

Northern Superchargers 100 for 7 (Davidson-Richard’s 27, Bell 4-11) tied with Southern Brave 100 for 8 (Tryon 25, Smith 2-24)Kate Cross scrambled two runs off the final ball to level the scores and secure a tie between Northern Superchargers and Southern Brave in the Hundred. On a slow and used wicket, boundary-hitting never looked easy and Superchargers’ chase of 100 was a nervous and fraught affair throughout, off the back of a first-innings batting effort from Southern Brave that was equally scrappy.Brave – well marshalled by captain Georgia Adams – used the conditions and kept the stumps in play to maintain the pressure in the chase, and were thankful to England seamer Lauren Bell whose 4 for 11 was the standout performance of the game. Both Phoebe Litchfield and Alice Davidson-Richards looked to have the chase in hand for Hollie Armitage’s side, but on a nip-and-tuck day that saw momentum swing this way and that, both players were dismissed just as they seemed to be putting their team’s nose in front.Only Maia Bouchier and Chloe Tryon passed 20 for Southern Brave, but Rhianna Southby and Bell played a hugely important role with bat in hand to inch their team up to the psychologically important three-figure total. As it was, Southern Brave’s total was just enough to not be surpassed by Superchargers, but both sides will feel they missed the opportunity to get their first win of the Hundred on the board.Meerkat Match Hero Lauren Bell said: “The emotions were up and down! In that last set of five I had a lot of adrenaline. It was cool, that’s what we play cricket for.”You just go ball by ball at the death, and see what player you’re bowling at. Pace-off was working on this pitch, and pace-on was a good variation, so it was ball by ball.”The ideal final ball was a straight yorker and I don’t think I was too far away from executing. Maybe we should have just looked at the field a bit but what can you do, hindsight is lovely.”

Better signing than Henderson: Sunderland open talks to sign £17m "monster"

Sunderland are days away from clashing with Sevilla in a pre-season friendly match that will show what Regis Le Bris’ camp are made of ahead of moving up to the Premier League, with the Spanish titans no pushovers.

A 4-0 victory was picked up against South Shields to get the run of pre-season fixtures kick-started convincingly. Yet, Sevilla and then a trip to face off against Sporting will be far tougher tests, as the whole barrage of new Black Cats signings get up to speed with what is expected of them in their fresh environment.

One player that won’t be linking up with Le Bris and Co. anytime soon is Jordan Henderson, with all the rumours surfacing of the ex-Liverpool midfielder wanting to return to his boyhood club falling to the wayside when his move to Brentford was recently confirmed.

This doesn’t mean Sunderland won’t be chasing after more Premier League-experienced bodies, however, as another former top-flight regular is eyed up.

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson

Sunderland make contact with £17m star

Aaron Ramsdale has regularly been linked with a switch to the Stadium of Light this summer, with Le Bris perhaps wary about Anthony Patterson’s goalkeeping credentials moving up to such a taxing division.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

On top of that, there does need to be some more Premier League prowess present when reviewing their whirlwind transfer activity to date, with all of the signings entering the Black Cats camp so far primarily coming from far-off European leagues, minus Simon Adingra moving to Wearside from Brighton and Hove Albion.

That’s where Granit Xhaka could come in and be a standout purchase for the newly promoted side.

Reports from Sky Sports earlier this week revealed that the Mackems were interested and exploring a move for the Swiss midfielder but an update has since emerged.

Bayer Leverkusen's Emiliano Buendia celebrates scoring their second goal with GranitXhaka

Indeed, according to German outlet BILD, Sunderland have contacted Bayer Leverkusen regarding a £17m deal for the ex-Arsenal battler, although they are yet to formally submit their first offer.

The Black Cats were facing competition for his signature from Saudi club Neom but they have now been ruled out of the race after refusing to submit a bid of more than £7m.

Why Xhaka is a far better signing than Henderson

Away from his Premier League experience with the Gunners, Xhaka has managed to forge a far more successful career post the English game when weighed up next to a declining Henderson, meaning he should be able to return to the high-pressure scenarios ahead of him reinvigorated and ready to go.

Indeed, it only took the Switzerland international one season in the Bundesliga to lift the German top-flight title, with the 6-foot-1 enforcer very much playing his part in the success story under Xabi Alonso by notching up 50 games and tallying up six goal contributions.

Last season saw his game be elevated even more at the BayArena with seven assists next to his name from 33 Bundesliga clashes, meaning he should be able to slot back into the Premier League with ease, knowing he’s still at the top of his game, despite being 32 years of age.

Henderson, on the other hand, hasn’t quite aged like a fine wine in contrast. The 35-year-old veteran only picked up five assists in all competitions last season, next to Xhaka’s far sturdier amount.

Moreover, only 2.3 duels were won on average per Eredivisie clash last season for Ajax by the former Reds captain, with Xhaka winning a more forceful 3.9 at Leverkusen to do his bit for the cause. It’s hardly a surprise he’s been described as a midfield “monster” in the past, notably by Arsenal writer Connor Humm.

Away from regaining his confidence out in Germany after a topsy-turvy stay at the Emirates, Xhaka is also well-versed in what it takes to be a fiery and combative option in the demanding English top-flight, even if his career at Arsenal was sometimes bumpy.

When looking at the table above, it’s clear that the 32-year-old would be a valuable addition as a well-rounded option centrally, with a standout 17 goals and 24 assists coming his way in North London, on top of a mighty 1001 duels being won in total across his 225-game span in the top league. Henderson would win 1337, in contrast, but he did have the added boost of 431 appearances on his side.

Hailed as a “leader” by German football expert Raphael Honigstein for what he has given Leverkusen, on top of also possessing the necessary quality to be a success in England, it does feel as if landing Xhaka would be the perfect pick-up to offer both quality and experience to Sunderland’s survival mission.

If he were to join the Black Cats ranks shortly, Henderson would just be put to one side as an afterthought.

More exciting than Xhaka: Sunderland make contact to sign £34m star on loan

Sunderland could seal a deal even more exciting than Granit Xhaka returning to the Premier League with this world-class capture.

George Worker retires from cricket to take up position with investment firm

Former New Zealand batter George Worker has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 34 to take up a “fantastic opportunity” with an investment services firm.”After a fulfilling 17-year journey in professional cricket, I am announcing my retirement from the sport. This decision marks the end of an incredible chapter of my life and the beginning of a new adventure,” Worker, who started his professional career with Central Districts and ended it with Auckland, said. “Throughout the course of my career, I’ve forged some great friendships that will last a lifetime and memories I will cherish forever.”Worker had a short stint in international cricket, playing ten ODIs and two T20Is between 2015 and 2018, in which he scored 272 and 90 runs respectively. It started on a 2015 tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa where, on T20I debut, he won the Player-of-the-Match award for his 38-ball 62 in Harare. An impressive 2017 Ford Trophy, where he scored 659 runs in ten innings for Central Districts while averaging 82.37, put him back on the selectors’ radar. The ODI debut came on that same tour of Africa, and he got a bit of a run in his best format in 2017 when he played in Ireland and at home against West Indies, scoring all his three ODI half-centuries in that span.More recently, Worker earned a call-up to New Zealand’s ODI squad for their home series against New Zealand in March 2022, when Mark Chapman was ruled out with Covid-19, but he did not get an opportunity to add to his 12 international caps.Overall, in 169 List A games, he scored 6721 runs at an average of 43.64 and a strike rate of 79.85 with 18 centuries and 37 half-centuries. His first-class (6400 runs at an average of 29.49) and T20 (3480 runs at a strike rate of 123.57) numbers were less impressive.Worker debuted for Central Districts in the 2007-08 season and represented New Zealand at the Under-19 World Cup soon after. More recently, he played a big part in Auckland Aces’ Ford Trophy 2021-22 title win, topping the overall run-scoring chart with 672 runs in ten innings, averaging 84.00 and hitting four centuries.A part-time left-arm spinner, Worker finished with 58 first-class wickets to go with 60 in List A cricket and 42 in T20s.”Whilst his immense leadership and experience will be sorely missed in the Aces environment, we’re hugely excited for him as he embarks on this next chapter in his career,” Auckland Cricket’s head of performance and talent Evan Jones said. “George will, of course, remain an important part of the Auckland Cricket family, and we look forward to seeing what that may look like in the future.”The immediate future will be far away from cricket.”As I close this chapter, I am excited to embark on the next phase of my life with Forsyth Barr, who have offered me a fantastic opportunity,” Worker said. “I look forward to bringing the same passion and dedication to my new role with them.”
