South Africa allrounder Dwaine Pretorius has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series in India as well as the upcoming men’s T20 World Cup – that begins later this month in Australia – after fracturing his left thumb. He picked up the injury during the third T20I against India on Tuesday in Indore, the only game South Africa won in the three-match contest.”The nature of the injury requires surgical intervention and Dwaine will consult the Cricket South Africa designated hand surgeon on arrival in South Africa,” CSA chief medical officer Dr Shuaib Manjra said. “Normal rehabilitation procedures will follow to ensure he speedily returns to playing cricket.”Marco Jansen has been added to South Africa’s ODI squad. Jansen is also part of the three-man reserves’ list for the T20 World Cup, along with Andile Phehlukwayo and Bjorn Fortuin, and could be the frontrunner to replace Pretorius in that squad as well. This is South Africa’s second injury blow ahead of the T20 World Cup after Rassie van der Dussen was ruled out with a broken finger. Van der Dussen sustained the injury during the second Test against England in Manchester and is expected to return to fitness for the Tests against Australia in December.Temba Bavuma will lead South Africa at the World Cup. At the time of announcing the squad – which has one more fast-bowling allrounder in Wayne Parnell – on September 6, CSA had confirmed that Bavuma would play as an opener, though his horror run at the T20I series in India could force a change of plans.

O Time do Povo é o vice-líder do Brasileirão, com 18 pontos.

Man City 2-3 Real Madrid player ratings as Savio struggles, Stones stars

Man City player ratings Ederson – 5

Was on course for a fine evening of work before gifting Real Madrid and former Blue Brahim Diaz their second by uncharacteristically conceding possession late on.

Josko Gvardiol – 7

Once again the defender was at the heart of all of City’s impressive work going forward and even got an assist to his name for Haaland’s opening goal.

Nathan Ake – 6.5

Faced a difficult time up against Vinicius and didn’t always have things his own way, but Ake stood firm for the majority of his time on the pitch before he was replaced by Mateo Kovacic.

Ruben Dias – 7

City have missed their commanding defender and even as injuries fell around him, Dias often remained solid despite shipping what were frustrating goals.

Manuel Akanji – 7

Summing up their injury issues, Akanji became the second City player forced off with injury at the break to add to Pep Guardiola’s woes. Prior to that, however, the Swiss – to his credit – did well up against an energetic Vinicius Junior.

John Stones – 8

In the defensive midfield role as Guardiola’s latest attempt to replace Rodri, Stones’ performance puts him in good stead to once again feature in what could provide a crucial solution for Man City at the heart of their midfield.

Savio – 5

The Brazilian endured a frustratingly quiet game for his standards, struggling to get on the ball and make the desired impact as Real Madrid pushed him back with offensive outlets of their own.

Kevin de Bruyne – 6.5

For all his hard work when he got himself on the ball, De Bruyne struggled to do exactly that one too many times. In the end, his lack of influence proved costly on a big night for his side.

Bernardo Silva – 6

A midfielder who’s struggled to maintain his standards at times this season, Silva once again performed below what he is capable of just when Guardiola needs his most experienced men to step up.

Jack Grealish – 7

Forced off after just 30 minutes, Grealish didn’t need beyond the half hour mark to make his mark on Real Madrid having played Gvardiol in behind in the build-up to Erling Haaland’s opener.

Erling Haaland – 9

In truth, there wasn’t a lot more that Haaland could do. Finding the opening effort in routine fashion, the forward then stepped up to take responsibility from the penalty spot and score what many believed would be the winner.

Substitutes: Phil Foden – 7, Rico Lewis – 6.5, Mateo Kovavic – 6.5

Real Madrid player ratings Thibaut Courtois – 7

Although it was a rarity, the goalkeeper did well – as ever – to keep out the majority of Manchester City danger. Up against Haaland, the Belgian could do nothing to stand in the way of both goals.

Federico Valverde – 7

You wouldn’t know that Federico Valverde was out of position based on his performance up against the Premier League champions – albeit the hurt champions – with the midfielder enjoying an impressive display.

Aurelien Tchouameni – 7

Like Valverde, Tchouameni performed well out-of-position and highlighted how Madrid have been doing well to solve problems of their own in recent weeks.

Raul Asencio – 6.5

A young defender alongside an out-of-position midfielder, not many will have any complaints about Asencio’s performance at The Etihad as he largely kept Manchester City at arm’s length.

Ferland Mendy – 6

Whilst he didn’t struggle defensively, Mendy was guilty of spurning a chance that should have been converted in the opening period which Carlo Ancelotti would have wanted to fall to almost anyone else.

Rodrygo – 7

Mbappe and Bellingham will get the credit, but Rodrygo stood out in his own right throughout a frantic affair.

Eduardo Camavinga – 7

As the old guard in Real Madrid’s midfield bow out, Camavinga has stepped up on the biggest stage to make his mark in their place.

Dani Ceballos – 6.5

Back on English soil, Ceballos loses marks for conceding the penalty on what was otherwise an well-rounded evening from the former Arsenal man.

Jude Bellingham – 7.5

The match winner to turn a quiet game into an electric evening, Bellingham was always likely to have his say at The Etihad and that he did.

Vinicius Junior – 7

In front of fans who were quick to remind him about his recent failures, Vinicius was among the stars of the show as he laid down a marker in front of an on-watching Rodri.

Kylian Mbappe – 7

Although wasteful at times, Mbappe still made his mark with a well-timed equaliser in somewhat scrappy fashion.

Substitutes: Luka Modric – 6, Brahim Diaz – 8, Fran Garcia – 7

Wounded Pakistan still 'feeling the pain and hurting', but morale remains intact

“It always hurts you a bit after losing such a big match. We can’t pretend that nothing happened,” says Iftikhar Ahmed

After such a harrowing defeat, amid such a surreal spectacle at a heaving MCG magnified by the entire cricket world watching, Pakistan captain Babar Azam had the difficult task of addressing his crestfallen players in the dressing room. Some players were slumped, others had their hands on their heads, trying to rationalise the absurdity of what had just transpired. In a 90-second rallying cry, which has since gone viral on social media, Babar calmly but firmly, gesturing with his hands, lifted his team off the canvas.Related

“(Babar) told us that it was not our last game. That it (the match) is over, and we all put in our best effort,” Pakistan batter Iftikhar Ahmed, who hit a 34-ball 51 against India, said after clasping together in front of his head while listening intently to Babar.”The captain and the management have supported us. Our morale is high and we are confident as always.”Even though spirits were lifted, the pain over such a defeat in an instant classic between great rivals that will be forever remembered, gnaws away.”It always hurts you a bit after losing such a big match. We can’t pretend that nothing happened… no, it really hurts,” Iftikhar said. “After all, we are representing more than 200 to 250 million people here. Therefore, we are all feeling the pain and are hurting.”It looms as a major challenge, but Pakistan will need to regroup quickly against Zimbabwe on Thursday. The sunny skies in Perth to greet Pakistan would have surely provided a tonic, after so much weather innuendo in Melbourne, and so too stepping onto Optus Stadium, which mirrors the nearby WACA with its bounce and pace while swing on the green-tinged pitch has been notable with the new ball. After such a menacing burst against India on a similarly nippy MCG deck, until he was finally collared by a peerless Virat Kohli, speedster Haris Rauf looms as the key for Pakistan with expectations he can replicate England quick Mark Wood’s rapid spell against Afghanistan on Saturday.”Haris is our main strike bowler and we expect him to bowl better here and win it for Pakistan,” Iftikhar said. “The Australian pitches are fast and bouncy and we have prepared for that.”After Pakistan were rattled early by menacing movement, which almost resembled something out of a Shield match, from India quicks Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Iftikhar steadied the innings by cleverly utilising the gaps on the vast MCG before being inventive against left-arm spinner Axar Patel.”People say I don’t play sweep and reverse, so I am also trying to master these shots. Sweep and reverse sweep will be key shots on these pitches because of the bounce here,” he said.”My role in the team is to stay long at the crease after we lose a wicket. My role is to take stock and then attack. When you get runs against big teams then it raises your morale and I will take this confidence forward.”Every match is a new game and the effort will be to give my 100% for the team.”Pakistan’s heartbreaking opening defeat has put them – even at this early stage – on the back foot, meaning there is little room left for error if they are to make the semi-finals again. While hot favourites against Zimbabwe, Pakistan will know nothing is guaranteed in a tournament throwing up upsets and nerve-jangling finishes against an opponent who confidently navigated the first round and then shared the points with South Africa albeit in controversial circumstances.”Zimbabwe is an international team and we have to play strong against them like any other team,” Iftikhar said. “Important to play well…the players are hungry to perform.”We are trying to prepare for the next game, come back strong and remain in contention for this World Cup.”

Tottenham make new £50m offer for "superstar" they tried to sign in January

Tottenham Hotspur have now made a £50m offer for a “superstar” both they and Newcastle United have been chasing for a while, according to a report.

Spurs up to 12th after victory over Man Utd

Ange Postecoglou’s side have been through a very tough period, crashing out of both domestic cup competitions in recent weeks, but there was some respite yesterday evening, triumphing 1-0 over Manchester United in the Premier League.

A sixth clean sheet of the season in the league helped Spurs move up to 12th, with the manager likely to be happy with his side’s performance from a defensive point of view, just like he was after the 2-0 victory away at Brentford earlier this month.

Speaking after the victory over the Bees, Postecoglou praised the way his defence have performed throughout the campaign, saying: “[We] needed a big effort again today. We put that in, they had a lot of set-pieces, and we dealt with them awfully well.

“I think we defended as well as we have all season, and we still had the quality to hurt them the other way. Outstanding effort by the players.

Manager stalls new contract after Tottenham express interest in hiring him

Ange Postecoglou has been under serious pressure in recent weeks.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 15, 2025

Although Tottenham have kept two clean sheets on the bounce in the Premier League, and they brought in Kevin Danso in January, a report from Spain is now claiming they have submitted a €60m (£50m) offer for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Spurs are not the only club to have allegedly made a £50m bid, however, with Arsenal, Newcastle United and Liverpool tabling offers of their own, with the Magpies following up their interest from last summer which even forced Eagles chairman Steve Parish to publicly comment on the situation.

The Lilywhites are said to be showing strong interest in the 24-year-old, who is tipped to fit perfectly into Postecoglou’s system, and their desire to sign the defender is underlined by the fact they submitted a £70m bid in January.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehiin action with Manchester United's Amad Diallo

"Superstar" Guehi likely to command huge fee

Crystal Palace owner Parish has previously made it clear he will only sanction the England international’s departure if a huge offer is submitted, saying: “Nobody has got to the valuation yet. If you want a superstar player you need to pay superstar money.

“It’s not near the point where we have to make a decision. “We love having him and would love to keep him. “If someone else wants to have him they need to make it really difficult for us. He’s a generational talent.”

This summer will be the Eagles’ last chance to cash-in on the centre-back, as his contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026, and with so many suitors lining up, it may take a massive bid to get a deal done.

Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have been sidelined with injuries this season, which highlighted the need to bring in depth at centre-back, and Danso has slotted straight into the team since arriving from Lens late in January.

When Van de Ven and Romero return, Spurs will be well-stocked with some top-class defenders, so it is debatable whether a move for Guehi is still necessary, and the huge price tag could dissuade Daniel Levy from making a move.

Perfect for Amad: Man Utd planning summer bid for £67m "monster"

The January transfer window officially slammed shut at the start of this month and it was a fairly busy month for Manchester United, with ins and outs at Old Trafford.

It was Ruben Amorim’s first chance to shape the squad in his vision, after he came in to replace Erik ten Hag, and he added two new players to his squad.

Patrick Dorgu came in on a permanent deal from Lecce to bolster the manager’s options in the wing-back positions, whilst 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven joined from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The bulk of Manchester United’s business was, however, centred around outgoings as they were able to move on a number of players during the winter window.

Youngsters Dan Gore and Ethan Wheatley both secured loan exits for the second half of the season, whilst Marcus Rashford, Tyrell Malacia, and Antony were also sent away on loan after failing to convince Amorim that they were ready to be important to the team.

The Red Devils, though, already have one eye on the summer transfer window at the end of the campaign, as they have reportedly identified a target to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch.

Manchester United plotting bid for new striker

Manchester United have struggled to get goals out of their strikers in the Premier League this season. Rasmus Holjund and Joshua Zirkzee have combined for five goals in the top-flight so far.

Manchester United's JoshuaZirkzeewith manager Ruben Amorim after being substituted

This shows that Amorim is not getting enough out of his two senior centre-forwards at this moment in time, which may be why the club are now looking to bring in another player in that position.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Manchester United are eyeing up Napoli number nine Victor Osimhen ahead of a summer swoop for the Nigeria international.

The report claims that they are set to make a summer bid for the impressive marskman, who is currently on loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray, as they would like to improve their options in the striker position.

Galatasaray's VictorOsimhenis picture wearing a protective face mask

It adds that the United board are planning to hold talks over a possible deal for the former Lille centre-forward, as it has been ‘made clear’ that he does not have a future at Napoli beyond the end of his loan spell in Turkey.

GIVEMESPORT adds that the club are also set to make a decision on whether or not to keep hold of Holjund and Zirkzee in the summer window, which suggests that there is still a chance that one, or both, of them could move on ahead of next season.

Transfer Focus

The outlet reveals that Osimhen’s release clause at Napoli is set to drop to £63m in the summer, but it remains to be seen whether or not the Red Devils are prepared to bid at that price or if they will look to negotiate a cheaper deal.

Amorim should, though, push for the club to secure a deal for the striker because he could come in as the perfect addition for Amad Diallo next term.

Amad Diallo's form for Manchester United this season

The Ivory Coast international has finally emerged as a regular starter at Old Trafford and has carried the team on his back at times this season with his brilliance at the top end of the pitch.

Amad, who previously spent time on loan at Glasgow Rangers and Sunderland, has racked up nine goals and seven assists in all competitions from a right wing or right wing-back position.

The 22-year-old star has been utilised in a wing-back role by Amorim at times this season and his attacking output in that position has been exceptional, as shown in the chart below.

Amad has proven that he has the quality to provide a big threat in the final third as both a scorer and a creator of goals, with six goals and six assists in 17 starts in the Premier League so far this season.

The former Atalanta starlet is a striker’s dream because he takes up great positions to be passed to in the final third, whilst also being able to create high-quality chances for his teammates, as shown by his assist tally.

Why Victor Osimhen would be perfect for Amad Diallo

Manchester United could find the perfect centre-forward for Amad by paying £63m to sign Osimhen on a permanent deal from Napoli in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old striker is a proven goalscorer, who can also assist his teammates, and he has showcased his quality in a major European league in Italy, with 15 goals in the Serie A in the 2023/24 campaign and 26 league goals in the previous season.

Osimhen, once dubbed a “monster” by data analyst Ben Mattinson, found the back of the net on a regular basis for Napoli in the Italian top-flight, which suggests that he has the quality to make the most of Amad’s creativity at Old Trafford.

That has been backed up by his impressive form for Galatasaray on loan in Turkey during the 2024/25 campaign, as he has continued to shine as an exceptional goalscoring force and as a creative presence in the number nine position.

As you can see in the table above, Osimhen has racked up an eye-catching 17 goals and 11 ‘big chances’ created in 22 appearances for the Turkish giants.

He is perfect for Amad because he can finish the chances that the winger creates whilst also being able to assist the Ivorian star with his own creativity, as also evidenced by his relationship with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia at Napoli.

The former Napoli duo were both directly involved in the same goal 15 times in 50 matches in the Serie A, which shows that Osimhen can create a fantastic relationship with a winger who can also score and assist goals at an impressive rate.

Therefore, the Nigerian marksman could come in as the perfect signing for Amad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, which is why United must splash the cash to land his signature in the summer transfer window.
