Sheffield Wednesday are believed to be pushing to sign a “fantastic” Premier League player in the January transfer window, according to reliable journalist Joe Crann.

The Owls suffered a damaging defeat in the Championship on Sunday afternoon, falling to a 3-1 defeat away to Preston North End, halting Danny Rohl’s side’s momentum in the process.

In fairness to Wednesday, they were arguably the better team for large chunks of the game, and when Josh Windass equalised in the second half they looked the most likely side to pick up all three points, only for the visitors to gift their opponents a penalty and another sloppy goal.

The defeat leaves the Owls sitting 11th in the Championship table, which is perfectly respectable, but Rohl is now having to tackle an injury crisis at centre-back, with Dominic Iorfa forced off at Preston, adding to the list of absentees in that area of the pitch.

With the January window now just a few days away from opening, Wednesday will be afforded the chance to make new signings, and it looks as though a defender is being eyed up.

According to The Sheffield Star‘s Crann, Sheffield Wednesday have made an enquiry about signing Southampton centre-back Ronnie Edwards in January.

The Owls are “very keen to try and get a deal done” for the 21-year-old, with a loan move from St Mary’s mooted, and he is “believed to be very in demand”. The report adds that Rohl has “identified the centre-back as one of his top targets”.

Edwards could be exactly what Wednesday are after when it comes to bolstering their centre-back options in January, with a loan move potentially appealing to the player himself, too. Regular football has been hard to come by for Saints this season, with just one appearance totalling 12 minutes coming his way in the Premier League in 2024/25 to date. That arguably isn’t benefiting him, so the idea of being a key figure at Hillsborough could be ideal.

Darren Ferguson hailed Edwards as “fantastic” during his time at Peterborough United, while Barry Fry has heaped further praise on him, saying: “Ronnie is a Rolls Royce. We knew that when we signed him. It’s no secret how highly Ronnie is rated by other clubs and by the England set up. We had 18 Premier League scouts watching him play for the under 23s at our stadium.”

There is no question that Wednesday need a centre-back signing in the coming weeks, or they will risk falling further down the Championship during the winter, given their lack of available options in defence.

Hindsight is a tricky thing but from very early on in this Test, the omission of Neil Wagner was not looking like a wise move.They still thought it should be enough. “We certainly believed it was,” Tom Latham said. “You have to have some belief when you get into a final innings. The way we started with the ball was outstanding and we were able to make those breakthroughs. At lunch they were three-down, and then we had a bit of momentum going into tea as well. But, as I said heading into today, 300 on the board and with the breakthroughs we made in the morning, we firmly felt we’d have a good chance. وأشار إلى أن خروج مصطفى العش في يناير أثّر على الفريق، مؤكدًا: “أعتقد أن العش مستمر مع الأهلي بناءً على مؤشرات فنية، وقد يكون بديلًا في المنتخب بعد إصابة محمد عبد المنعم”. 

وعلق وليد صلاح الدين على رحيل مارسيل كولر من تدريب الأهلي قائلًا: “قرار منطقي، في بعض الأحيان تصل العلاقة بين المدرب والنادي إلى طريق مسدود، خاصة إذا كانت هناك مشكلات في الأداء والنتائج والعلاقات مع اللاعبين”. 

وأضاف: “بعض اللاعبين مثل حسين الشحات ومحمد مجدي أفشة وأشرف بن شرقي لم يظهروا، والأخير تحديدًا يملك جودة مختلفة عن باقي اللاعبين، الجماهير بدأت تحاسب على الأداء، خاصة بعد الصفقات الكبيرة، ولا يمكن الاعتماد على الفوز بشق الأنفس بهدف أمام الهلال ثم محاولة تكرار الأمر أمام صن داونز”.

وتابع: “كثرة التغييرات في قطاع الكرة تؤثر على أي مدرب لا يستمع للآخرين، ولدي معلومة مؤكدة أن كولر لم يكن يستمع لأحد، وكان يقلل من رأي سامي قمصان ويتمسك برأيه بشكل دائم، الأهلي لم يكن يعاني إداريًا، لكن غياب التفاهم الفني أضعف المنظومة”.

وتابع: “الأهلي يحتاج مدير فني قوي يجيد التعامل مع النجوم، كما فعل مانويل جوزيه، خاصة وأن لدينا لاعبَين أو ثلاثة في كل مركز من السوبر ستارز، ويجب غلق ملف النجوم من جميع الجوانب”.

واختتم: “جراديشار مهاجم مؤسس أوروبيًا، لكنه ليس مهاريًا، بينما سامي أبو علي أكثر حِرفة، وبن شرقي بالطبع يملك إمكانيات فنية أعلى، جراديشار مهاجم كما تقول الكتب، لكنه لا يقدّم الأفضل على أرض الملعب”.

Elsewhere, United are said to be eyeing goalkeeper Zion Suzuki once again after he turned down a move to Manchester in 2023 under Erik ten Hag. Talks have been held over a new left-back, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes seemingly a target after working under Amorim at Sporting CP.

There may well be a number of departures in January, too. Marcus Rashford’s future has been a hot topic of conversation, whereas Antony is also being linked with a move away.

Another attacker who has been getting more game time than Rashford and Antony is Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine was linked with the likes of Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona last month, however, he appears to have an agreement with another European side.

According to reports in Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Garnacho has an agreement in principle with Serie A giants Napoli.

Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna travelled to meet Garnacho’s entourage this week and that there is now an agreement in principle over a five-year contract at €3m per season which works out at around £12.5m across the duration of the deal.

INEOS want up to €70m (£59m) to sell the winger, whereas Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis won’t go beyond €50m (£42m), so a transfer fee still needs to be agreed.

It could well be a deal to keep an eye on over the coming weeks, but with Garnacho a regular, missing just one game under Amorim, and under contract at Old Trafford until 2028, INEOS appear to hold all the cards at this stage.

أعلنت لجنة الانضباط والأخلاق بالاتحاد السعودي لكرة القدم عن سلسلة من العقوبات الصارمة، شملت ناديي الهلال والأهلي بالإضافة إلى مسؤول بارز، وذلك على خلفية مخالفات متنوعة تتعلق بالتنظيمات والضوابط الإعلامية.

وجاء في قرارات اللجنة إيقاف فارس العلياني، مسؤول التوثيق بنادي الشباب، عن ممارسة أي نشاط رياضي لمدة عام كامل، بالإضافة إلى تغريمه 300 ألف ريال سعودي. وأوضحت اللجنة أن العقوبة جاءت بسبب تصريحاته الإعلامية التي تضمنت اتهامات مسيئة للاتحاد السعودي والعاملين فيه، ومحاولته إثارة الرأي العام.

كما قررت اللجنة تغريم نادي الهلال بمبلغ 50 ألف ريال، نتيجة عدم التزامه بتخصيص نسبة 30% من مدرجات مباراة النصر بسعر 30 ريالًا كما تنص عليه اللوائح التنظيمية، وفقًا لتقارير مسؤولي المباراة.

ولم يسلم النادي الأهلي من العقوبات، حيث ألزمته لجنة الانضباط بدفع غرامة مالية قدرها 50 ألف ريال، بعد مخالفته القواعد التنظيمية الخاصة بتصميم “التيفو” خلال مباراة الاتحاد في ديربي جدة.

تعكس هذه القرارات تشدد لجنة الانضباط في مواجهة أي تجاوزات سواء داخل الملعب أو خارجه، في إطار سعيها لحماية النظام وتطبيق القوانين بحزم على جميع عناصر المنظومة الرياضية.

Debutant Gleeson’s 3 for 15 in vain as England fold for 121 in pursuit of 171

Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up a three-wicket haul, and Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal chipped in with two wickets apiece, as India bundled out England for 121 in the second T20I in Edgbaston to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.After having been put in, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant, the latter opening for the first time in T20Is, took India to 49 in 4.5 overs. England pulled things back in the middle overs, with debutant Richard Gleeson picking up Rohit, Virat Kohli and Pant in the space of ten balls. When Chris Jordan dismissed Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya off successive balls, India were reduced to 89 for 5 in the 11th over.Ravindra Jadeja, who replaced Axar Patel in the XI, then smashed an unbeaten 46 off 29 balls to steer India to 170 for 8.Given the short square boundaries – 64 metres on each side – it wasn’t necessarily a winning total, especially against this England side, but Bhuvneshwar sent Jason Roy and Jos Buttler back cheaply to dent England’s chase. England could never recover from there and slumped to 61 for 6 in 11 overs. On the second ball of the innings, Rohit attempted a hoick over midwicket against David Willey. All he got was an outside edge past the slip fielder. Two balls later, he chased a full and wide delivery only to slice it towards backward point, where Roy grassed the chance. Of the 20 balls he faced, Rohit was not in control of eight of those.But the field restrictions meant when he connected well, the runs came thick and fast. Earlier in the day, Gleeson, at the age of 34 years and 219 days, became the third-oldest debutant for England in T20Is. He made his day more memorable when he sent back Rohit in his very first over. The India captain top-edged a pull and Buttler completed the catch running backwards.On the first ball of Gleeson’s next over, Dawid Malan took an even better catch to dismiss Kohli. The batter looked to hit a length ball over wide long-on but ended up skying it behind backward point. Malan, like Buttler, ran backwards and put in a full-length dive to pouch it with both hands. When he completed the catch, he wasn’t far away from the incoming deep-third fielder.Pant, by then, had moved to 26 off 14 balls, using his feet against both seamers and spinners and even deploying the late cut to pick up a four to show in what great state of mind he is in. He gave charge to Gleeson as well but was cramped and ended up getting an inside edge to Buttler.Hardik played out the hat-trick ball but looked uncomfortable against the extra bounce for the rest of the over, which turned out to be a double-wicket maiden. Still, he and Suryakumar took India to 86 for 3 at the halfway stage but Jordan snaffled them soon after. India try to ensure Dinesh Karthik comes out to bat mainly in the last five overs of the innings. But here he was in the middle as early as the 11th over. He took eight balls to open his account and was on 7 off 14 balls. In the end, he was run-out for 12 off 17.Jadeja, however, kept the scoreboard moving. He was helped by England’s sloppy fielding too – a misfield from Harry Brook handed him his first boundary, and when he was on 12, Buttler missed a potential stumping off Liam Livingstone.Jadeja made full use of that reprieve and stitched important partnerships with the lower order. In the final over, he even refused a single on a couple of occasions to keep the strike. His efforts made sure India picked up 55 in the last five overs.Bhuvneshwar swings it India’s way
There was a hint of movement with the new ball when the England seamers were bowling. But it was Bhuvneshwar who exploited it fully. He started with a wicket-maiden. On the first ball of the chase, he had Roy caught at first slip with an outswinger. In the next five, he beat Malan’s outside edge three times and rapped him on the pads once.In Bhuvneshwar’s next over, Malan used his feet to counter the movement, which prompted Pant to stand up to the stumps. Livingstone started in an attacking manner, as he always does these days, and hit two back-to-back fours off Bhuvneshwar. In the fourth over, he picked up another boundary off Hardik. But Bumrah nipped his counterattacking knock in the bud with a well-executed slower ball.Many seamers roll their fingers over the ball when they bowl an offcutter. Bumrah, on the other hand, uses more of his wrist than his fingers for the same effect but with little tell. Livingstone failed to pick it and had his off stump pegged back as the ball sneaked in through the gap between the bat and the pad.Chahal accounted for Brook and Malan before Bumrah returned to dismiss Sam Curran, with yet another slower ball. The allrounder miscued a lofted shot and holed out to mid-off. That left England 60 for 6 and all but out of the contest.Moeen and Willey flickered for a while but the required rate had crossed 13. Even after Moeen and Jordan fell off consecutive balls, Willey tried to fight it out, hitting a couple of sixes and as many fours in the next 11 balls, but the task had become insurmountable.

Chelsea have now upped their bid to sign a talent catching the eye of clubs around Europe as they look to beat off the competition to secure his signature ahead of those sides.

Chelsea’s transfer policy in recent seasons has been to build a squad capable of growing into superstars, and it has worked for the most part.

The Blues have snapped up the likes of Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke at relatively low prices, while also shelling out record fees for Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

The result has been a significant improvement under Enzo Maresca, with the Blues now fourth in the Premier League despite a recent run of two points from their last four games against sides in the bottom half of the table.

Chelsea make improved offer for attacker

That is according to a fresh report coming from Spanish outlet Relevo, which claims that Chelsea have made an improved offer to sign winger Yeremay Hernandez this January.

Talks have been taking place and they claim that the Blues have “already made a firm offer to the player” and are “insistent on signing him”, even going as far as to up their initial proposal to him.

Dubbed a “baller” by Rising Stars XI on X, the winger can play on either flank or as an attacking midfielder and has scored seven goals and grabbed three assists so far this season. Despite Deportivo being firmly in the bottom half of the division, it is claimed that the forward’s form has caught the eye.

A left-winger by trade but also capable of playing on the right, Hernandez renewed his contract with his current side last April, and though they are expecting him to leave in the coming transfer windows, it is added that the Spanish outfit will demand the 22-year-old’s €20m (£16.7m) release clause to be paid in order for him to leave the club in the next month.
