Australia’s three-match T20I tour of New Zealand in March has been abandoned after there were no managed isolation quarantine spots available for the Australian team.New Zealand Cricket and Cricket Australia have agreed to abandon the series scheduled to be played over four days in Napier in mid-March.NZC has decided to move New Zealand’s T20I with the Netherlands on March 25 to Napier’s McLean Park, after it was previously scheduled to be played at Bay Oval in Tauranga.Australia’s short T20I was originally scheduled under the assumption that the New Zealand government was set to relax MIQ rules for travellers from Australia but restrictions remain in place and have already forced the postponment of New Zealand’s four-match limited-overs tour of Australia that was scheduled to start on January 30.The tour was scheduled to run concurrently with Australia’s Test tour of Pakistan.NZC chief executive David White said the abandonment of Australia’s tour was inevitable given the restrictions at the border.”At the time we scheduled the visit there was a lot of hope that the trans-Tasman border would be open for those who met the right criteria,” White said.”However, the advent of Omicron has, unfortunately, changed everything at the border, and has made it impossible for us to continue with the series.”It’s disappointing – but we know it’s the same for businesses and individuals and other sports, and we’re grateful for the international schedule we have.”The remainder of New Zealand’s home summer remains unaffected with the New Zealand’s women’s series with India starting on Wednesday while men’s series against South Africa and the Netherlands are still going ahead as scheduled, as is the women’s 50-over World Cup.

Traditionally, football rivalries are based on proximity.
For example, just four miles separates the respective homes of Manchester United and Manchester City, while the venues of the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton are just 0.8 miles apart across Stanley Park.
However, not all rivalries are built on local bragging rights. Whether due to a bizarre one-off incident, significant periods of shared domestic dominance, or even the demise of a club, these are the six biggest non-local rivalries in English football today.

They are some of the most heated matches on the calendar, but which are the best?
ByRoss Kilvington Nov 8, 2024 6 Liverpool v Manchester City
The rivalry between Manchester City and Liverpool is a relatively new one, having only come to fruition in the mid-2010s as the two clubs, under the respective guidance of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp – who briefly held a rivalry in Germany with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund – began to dominate English football.
Since 2017/18, one of the two teams has won every Premier League title, three out of seven FA Cups and six out of seven EFL Cups, while between them, they’ve also set six of the eight highest top-flight points totals since 1995.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Jun 2, 2024
There have been some feisty moments between them, including when Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez and Guardiola got into a war of words after a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium last year, but more than anything, this rivalry is known for its sheer quality.
“Liverpool versus Manchester City has become the greatest, most intense and highest-quality rivalry in English football history,” former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said back in 2022. “There is a uniqueness to it. This is the first time the two best teams in England are the two best teams in the world, led by the two greatest coaches of their generation.”
Ahead of Guardiola and Klopp’s final meeting in the Premier League last season, the Spanish coach said of his German counterpart: “Jurgen, as a manager, has been the biggest rival I’ve ever had in my career.
“I will remember my period here, when I’m retired watching and playing golf, I’ll remember my biggest rival was Liverpool, for sure.”

5 Leeds United v Manchester United
The Red Devils’ rivalry with Leeds United predates even their rivalry with Liverpool. In fact, to get to its roots, you’d have to go back over 500 years to the War of the Roses – a series of conflicts in a long-lasting civil war between the House of York and the House of Lancaster, which ended with the extinction of both and the birth of the Tudor dynasty.
Once that was done, the rivalry between the cities of Manchester and Leeds continued through the Industrial Revolution, as both competed for trade.
On the football pitch, however, things didn’t really start to get personal between United and Leeds until the 1965 FA Cup semi-final, which ended in a punch-up between United’s Denis Law and Leeds’ Jack Charlton. Though Leeds ended up winning the tie, United went on to clinch the First Division title by beating Leeds on goal average.
On the 78 occasions the two sides and their supporters have met since then, they’ve fought in a similarly bitter fashion.

4 Brighton v Crystal Palace
The London borough of Croydon, home to Crystal Palace, and the city of Brighton are some 41 miles apart, but that distance hasn’t stopped the two sides from disliking each other.
The rivalry began in the 1970s when Palace and Brighton began to play one another regularly, but reached a flashpoint in 1976 following a dramatic FA Cup tie, which was played at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge, due to the first two games being drawn.
Palace won the game 1-0 after Brighton missed a penalty in the dying moments, and tensions boiled over at the final whistle when a Palace fan allegedly threw some tea at Brighton boss Alan Mullery. In response, Mullery infamously threw some coins at the ground in the direction of the fan and shouted: “That’s all Crystal Palace are worth!”
Since then, the two teams have met 46 more times – most recently in February 2024, when seven fans were arrested before the game, which Brighton won 4-1.

3 AFC Wimbledon v Milton Keynes Dons
The rivalry between AFC Wimbledon and MK Dons dates back to 2001, when Wimbledon’s board of directors made the controversial decision to relocate the club 56 miles away to Milton Keynes.
As a result, a number of disgruntled Dons fans formed a new club, AFC Wimbledon, in 2002. Wimbledon continued to play under the same name in Milton Keynes until 2003, when, shortly after going into administration, they were renamed MK Dons and given a new crest and kit.
The newly formed MK Dons initially claimed Wimbledon’s history, silverware and nickname, leading to further anger from AFC fans.
The silverware has since been returned to the London Borough of Merton, but the bitter rivalry between the two clubs, who both now play in League Two, remains.
Over the years, tempers have flared between both players and fans on numerous occasions, most recently in April of this year, when a mass brawl erupted at the final whistle. In the same game, Wimbledon midfielder Harry Pell kept also kicking balls at the MK Dons fans during the warm-up, which led to him being fined and banned by the FA.

2 Arsenal v Manchester United
Do Manchester United hate everyone? Or does everyone else hate Manchester United? Regardless, another of United’s non-local rivals are Arsenal, with whom they have endured (or enjoyed, depending on how you look at it) some fierce clashes over the years.
Between 1995/96 and 2003/04, United and Arsenal shared all nine Premier League titles on offer – United winning six, Arsenal three. They also finished behind one another in five of those years.
During that period, games between the two were often filled with heated exchanges, late challenges and plenty of drama, most notably in September 2003 at the “Battle of Old Trafford”, which saw the two sets of players involved in multiple mass melees, most notably at the final whistle when a posse of Arsenal players ran over to confront United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who earlier in the game was involved in the controversial sending-off of Patrick Vieira and had missed a last-minute penalty.
Arsenal and their players were later charged with improper conduct by the FA, who slapped the club with a record £175,000 fine.
The following meeting at Old Trafford wasn’t much smoother, with the Gunners’ unbeaten run coming to an end, controversial decisions made by referee Mike Riley and an infamous slice of pizza being thrown at Alex Ferguson in the tunnel post-match. This was – and is – a rivalry filled with genuine hatred.

1 Liverpool v Manchester United
Manchester City might be Manchester United’s closest rival, but Liverpool are no doubt their biggest.
The rivalry between United and Liverpool can be traced back to the Industrial Revolution and the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894, which was built so that Manchester could avoid importing raw materials through the port of Liverpool and the hefty costs that came with it.
That initial commercial competition extended onto the football pitch that same year, with the two sides meeting 243 times since.
The rivalry between the two clubs really began to hot up in the 1960s when Bill Shankly and Sir Matt Busby’s sides traded league titles in four successive seasons, though it was Liverpool who went on to dominate the 70s and 80s, winning 11 league titles in 20 years as United faded.
However, come the era of the Premier League and the arrival of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, the tables turned, with United entering a golden age and Liverpool falling from grace. To date, United have 20 league titles to Liverpool’s 19. In terms of the weight of history, this match-up has to top the lot.
As Gary O’Neil fights a losing battle to keep his job, Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly already held talks with one manager who could be tasked with turning their season around.
West Ham could be O'Neil's final chance
After defeating both Southampton and Fulham – the latter in convincing fashion – it finally looked as though O’Neil and Wolves had turned a corner and set course for Premier League safety. Since then, however, they’ve returned to square one after losing at Bournemouth in a game that saw them concede three penalties and suffering a 4-0 defeat against relegation rivals Everton. Now, O’Neil’s position looks more fragile than ever.
Overlooked by O'Neil: The next Wolves boss must unleash Pedro Neto 2.0
Wolverhampton Wanderers fans have been let down by this signing.
ByKelan Sarson Dec 6, 2024
According to John Percy of The Telegraph, the manager’s position is hanging by a thread and whilst he will take charge of the West Ham game against fellow struggling manager Julen Lopetegui this weekend, Wolves are actively seeking replacements. Defeat against the Hammers could be the final nail in the coffin for O’Neil’s reign.
It remains to be seen just who replaces the former Bournemouth boss, but recent reports have certainly dropped some hints. According to The Daily Mail, Wolves already held talks with Graham Potter over replacing O’Neil last month but could not convince the former Chelsea boss to take up the role at the time.
With O’Neil now on the brink of losing his job and Wolves actively seeking out replacements, it will be interesting to see whether Potter’s stance changes or if Wolves will be forced to turn their attention towards other options in the coming weeks.
"Outstanding" Potter could be an instant upgrade
If Wolves want to stay in the Premier League first and foremost, then Potter is an ideal option, having kept Brighton & Hove Albion afloat. Meanwhile, if they then want to return to the days of European football under Nuno Espirito Santo, then the former Seagulls boss is also more than capable of making that happen.
Potter transformed Brighton to earn what proved to be a difficult Chelsea job, but stepping back into management by turning Wolves around may increase his stock once again.
Graham-Potter
The 4-2-3-1 manager still has plenty of fans at The Amex too, with Brighton’s chief executive Paul Barber recently tipping Potter for the England job before the FA hired Thomas Tuchel. Barber told reporters as relayed by Tribal Football: “Graham is an outstanding coach and he is someone I am sure the FA will consider. He did an incredible job with us.
“It didn’t quite work out at Chelsea but there were some very good performances amongst the games he was responsible for. He conducts himself superbly. He is English through and through.
“He cares about the national team. He played for the national team at under-21 level. I haven’t spoken to Graham about the England job but he would be an outstanding candidate and I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t considered.”

Haris Rauf picked up the key wicket of Alex Hales•PSL
It was a contest of data against vibes, and at a packed Gaddafi stadium where the vibes were overwhelmingly pro-Lahore, Lahore Qalandars pulled a rabbit out of the hat to stun Islamabad United by six runs and book themselves a final berth. Chasing 169, Islamabad United looked well on course for much of their innings, spearheaded by a 79-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Alex Hales and Azam Khan. But quick wickets at the death saw United lose their nerve, and Lahore crept back into the contest by stealth. With seven required off three balls, United’s No 11 Waqas Maqsood smashed one in the direction of wide long-on. Abdullah Shafique held on to the catch, inches short of the boundary, and as the heavens opened, it really felt like the Qalandars’ PSL title drought might finally be coming to an end.How United found themselves in that position may well be pored over by the side for hours afterwards. They needed 39 off the last five, and were effectively coasting to their target. Oddly, however, the Qalandars had defended exactly that equation in one of these two sides’ group games, and when Haris Rauf removed Hales, there was the faint hope that history might repeat itself, even though Lahore were sloppy – a Shaheen Afridi no-ball denied him a wicket and Asif Ali smashed one from Rauf right in the slot for six to make the equation 10 off 10. A fateful decision from Asif, however, to try and take on Haris off the final ball of the penultimate over when retaining the strike seemed the obvious call led to his downfall, and the Qalandars were back in it.The decision-making grew only more puzzling from thereon. Mohammad Wasim refused singles off the first two balls of the final over to make it eight off four, and then tried to come back for a suicidal second, leaving the game at the mercy of Maqsood at No 11. He nearly did send the only ball he faced over cow corner, but he, and United, would end up inches short. David Wiese, and his side celebrated maniacally in the rain, and a capacity crowd joined them in the crazed frenzy.Liam Dawson picked up two wickets in his first two overs•PSL
And all this in a game where the Qalandars had for so long seemed to be dancing to United’s tunes. They opted to bat first upon winning the toss – Shadab Khan pointedly said he would have bowled anyway with some rain forecast – and then slumped to 9 for 2 inside four overs, losing Fakhar Zaman and Phil Salt to a superb opening spell from Liam Dawson. A magnificent rearguard from Abdullah Shafique and Kamran Ghulam – they would add 73 off 42 balls – brought the Qalandars back into the contest. There was an elegant violence to Shafique’s 28-ball 52, so seamlessly did he switch from classical shotmaking to brute-force hitting, and for a while, United’s attack looked to have been beaten back. That couldn’t continue endlessly, and United struck back hard. Shadab Khan deceived Ghulam in the flight to break the partnership, and took a lovely catch off Maqsood’s bowling to remove Shafique, while some self-destructive running put paid to Harry Brook. Qalandars slumped along to 141 in 19 overs, before, pricelessly, their perpetual saviour Wiese bludgeoned 27 off the final over to give his side something to bowl at.It was time for Qalandars’ star-studded bowling line-up to stand up, and that is what they did. The returning Paul Stirling fell to a stunning catch from Rauf off Shaheen Shah Afridi’s bowling, and Hales was starved of the strike, facing just eight balls in the powerplay. At the other end, Lahore continued to chip away, and before the powerplay was out, Will Jacks, Shadab Khan and Liam Dawson had all fallen.Abdullah Shafique scored 52 off 28 balls•PSL
Just as yesterday, however, Hales and Azam played vital knocks to keep United in the hunt. Azam smashed a four and a six off Mohammad Hafeez’s only over, while Hales dealt the same treatment to Samit Patel as United began to break the back of the chase. Qalandars briefly lost their discipline in the field. Three consecutive balls saw, in the following order: a Hales drop that went for six, five wides, and another Hales drop, suddenly making the equation a very favourable 55 off 47 with six wickets in hand.A sloppy run-out to get rid of, predictably, Azam, brought Qalandars back into the contest, before a smart catch from Ghulam finally removed Hales. Suddenly, the Qalandars were sneaking into the United tail, though a poor final over from Shaheen put United back in pole position. Zaman Khan, who has had a breakout tournament, dismissed Hasan Ali as he tried to go for a six, and the game would go the distance. The second innings would end as the first did, with Wiese trying to drag back this enigmatic Qalandars side into the contest. In a lot of ways, it’s felt like this South African-Namibian allrounder has personified Qalandars’ struggles these last few years, from their mesmeric brilliance to depressing listlessness. The joy on his face as Shafique took that final catch, though, suggested he wouldn’t change it for the world. For United, though, a tournament in which they had little right to go as deep as this, given the injuries they’ve endured, would end with a fourth successive season without a final berth. For the side that extols the virtues of six-hitting to an almost messianic extent, it was perhaps appropriate that they fell short by precisely that number.

In an era of Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp, among others, there is an argument to be made that the superstars are no longer on the pitch – they are in the dugout instead.
These are figures who relish the responsibility of leading an elite club to glory, while taking on the pressure and scrutiny that comes with such a status.
Unsurprisingly, that intense glare from fans and pundits alike can often weigh heavily, with every manager guilty of the odd outburst or two in the technical area. The desire and downright desperation to win can make even the best go a little crazy at times.
As such, we have taken a look back at some of the biggest manager meltdowns that have occurred on the touchline over the years…

ByCharlie Smith Oct 21, 2025 1 Louis van Gaal's theatrics Man Utd v Arsenal, February 2016
Manchester United certainly weren’t dull under the leadership of Louis van Gaal, that’s for sure.
The Dutchman spent two years at Old Trafford, leading the club to the FA Cup in 2016, yet that was as good as it got for the manager. Premier League finishes of fourth and fifth were not enough to keep him in a job.
Though perhaps his funniest and well-remembered moment was his dive on the touchline during a game against Arsenal in 2016. Annoyed that Alexis Sanchez dived on the field, Van Gaal threw himself to the ground in front of fourth official Mike Dean to make his feelings rather clear.
“I was emotional. It happens not too much. Normally I am sitting on my bench and I have a lot of criticism because I am sitting on my bench. I have apologised to the referee and the linesman. I have to control my emotions,” said the manager afterwards.

Referees and officials eventually got used to Jürgen Klopp’s antics at Liverpool, but one of his most intense moments was during his spell at Borussia Dortmund.
The German side were taking on Napoli in the Champions League when Klopp got so incensed after a decision that the fourth official had to physically back up in order to avoid making contact with the German.
Shortly after, the Premier League became witness to some of Klopp’s finest meltdowns, but this one for Dortmund was arguably the manager at his angriest.
3 Pep Guardiola fumes as City denied penalties Liverpool v Man City, November 2019
Before he was showing off six Premier League titles, Guardiola had previously shown his frustration in front of an Anfield crowd after becoming frustrated by two penalty appeals waved away by referee Michael Oliver.
When a cross struck Trent Alexander-Arnold’s arm in the Liverpool penalty area, the Spaniard lost the plot as he brandished two fingers in the air, signifying how many penalties his side should have gotten.
It didn’t end there, however. Once the game was over and Man City failed to get a positive result, Guardiola marched up the pitch in a foul mood, before repeating “Thank you so much” as he shook Michael Oliver’s hand rather firmly.

During Leicester City’s defeat to Crystal Palace under the leadership of Nigel Pearson, the manager reacted badly to a scuffle on the pitch.
James McArthur and Marc Albrighton had been involved in a fracas which saw the Palace star rolling at Pearson’s feet.
Instead of helping him up, Pearson grabbed the Scot by the throat, believing it to be his fault. He later dismissed the incident by calling it “very light-hearted”.
5 Arsène Wenger sent to the stands Man Utd v Arsenal, August 2009
Arsene Wenger
Arsène Wenger ruled the roost at Arsenal for nearly two decades. While he may have led the Gunners to three league titles and seven FA Cups, some of his best moments have come on the touchline.
One of the most iconic moments in Premier League history came as Wenger was sent off at Old Trafford in 2009 after kicking out at a water bottle following a late disallowed goal.
However, he couldn’t find a seat in the stands and proceeded to stand on a platform in front of the United fans, who took great delight in his suffering by continuing to wind him up.
Mike Dean asked him to move, to which Wenger stretched out his hands as if to say “where will I go?”, thus creating one of the most memorable pictures of the Premier League era.
6 José Mourinho's touchline outburst Chelsea v Swansea, August 2015
José Mourinho is no stranger to causing controversy, on or off the field. During his second spell in charge of the Blues, he led them to the Premier League title in 2015. Unfortunately, things began to unravel at the start of the 2015/16 campaign.
During their opening-day 2-2 draw against Swansea City, team doctor Eva Carneiro ran onto the pitch with a physio to treat an injured player. Mourinho lost his cool on the sidelines.
He reacted angrily as treatment to Eden Hazard meant the club would be down to nine men, calling the duo “impulsive and naive” after they tried helping the player.
7 Alan Pardew's headbutt Hull v Newcastle, March 2014
Alan Pardew was involved in one of the most incredible clashes in the Premier League as he was sent off for headbutting Hull City’s David Meyler.
Meyler pushed the Newcastle United manager over when trying to get the ball after it went out of play, before Pardew squared up to him and headbutted the Tigers midfielder in the process.
“I apologise to everyone, I shouldn’t have got involved. I didn’t mean no damage to the guy but I moved my head forward and I shouldn’t have done that,” Pardew said following the incident, but it couldn’t take away from how irresponsible he was at that moment in time.
