Sunderland make strong Championship start under Le Bris

The Black Cats couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the season in the Championship, with Le Bris’ men finding themselves right in the automatic promotion mix, sitting top of the table.

Sunderland have won six of their nine matches to date in the league, only suffering two defeats, and they have played some sparkling football along the way, with star youngsters such as Chris Rigg, Jobe Bellingham and Eliezer Mayenda catching the eye, among others.

Le Bris has come straight in as manager and hit the ground running, making his presence felt and steering his side to many good results, and the big test is whether his young squad can last the course of a long 46-game season in the Championship, especially as fatigue and pressure kick in during the latter months of the campaign.

While the manager will no doubt be delighted with how things are going, he will be aware of having the strongest backroom team to work alongside, taking pressure off him and allowing others to provide their input on team matters. A massive appointment has now been confirmed in that respect.

Sunderland appoint new assistant head coach

As reported by The Northern Echo‘s Shaw, Sunderland have appointed Pedro Ribeiro as their new assistant head coach, with sporting director Kristjaan Speakman buzzing, feeling the 38-year-old is the “right candidate” for the job and saying:

“We are delighted to welcome Pedro to Sunderland. We’ve been diligent and patient in identifying the right candidate for this role to ensure we build on the excellent progress we are making.

“Pedro has an impressive set of experiences. He can use these to provide an alternative perspective, but importantly he is aligned to our values and playing identity. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to helping him settle into his new role.”

The report states that the former Porto, Olympiakos and Fenehbace coach “will join Mike Dodds as Le Bris’ assistant head coach, with Michael Proctor to continue in his role as first team coach and Alessandro Barcherini as head of goalkeeping”. It goes on to add that the Black Cats “have spoken to a whole host of assistant head coach candidates since Le Bris’ summer arrival but were happy to be patient to ensure any new addition was the right fit on Wearside.”

This is a very exciting appointment for Sunderland, with Ribeiro a young coach with fresh ideas, but also a hugely experienced figure with 19 years of coaching under his belt. The Portuguese has also been a manager in the past, enjoying spells at the likes of Belenenses SAD, FC Penafiel, Academico Viseu and Leixoes in his homeland, which can only bode well in terms of him being a strong lieutenant to Le Bris.

Sunderland need to be looking at every possible advantage in their quest to seal promotion from the Premier League to the Championship, and bringing in someone with the ability and nous of Ribeiro can only be a good thing.

The same two teams played at the same venue for a second day running, and St Lucia Kings got the better of St Kitts & Nevis Patriots once again, but this time on an entirely different sort of pitch. Having ended Patriots’ five-match winning streak by powering their way to 224 on Saturday, Kings completed the double with a far scrappier performance in a low-scoring game, with Roston Chase sealing the deal with his third straight half-century of the season.They got home with six wickets in hand and 26 balls remaining, but the match was closer than the scorecard indicated, with missed chances costing Patriots the possibility of a tense finish.The pitch used on Sunday offered help for the spinners as well as disconcerting bounce when the fast bowlers hit the shorter lengths, and Kings’ well-balanced attack kept Patriots to 118 after the home team opted to bowl. Left-arm spinners Jeavor Royal and Samit Patel returned combined figures of 5 for 35 in eight overs, and Wahab Riaz conceded just 17 in his four overs while getting the prize early scalp of Chris Gayle with a lifting, seaming delivery in the corridor.Patriots could have ended up with far less, but Fabian Allen dragged them into three figures with an uncharacteristic knock. Chase took over thereafter, lofting Fawad and Archibald for exquisite sixes over extra-cover to rush towards his fifty, eventually bringing it up off just 36 balls.Samit fell with 19 left to get, but that was no ray of hope for Patriots, as Tim David came out and smacked two sixes in just seven balls to end the game in a hurry.

Ipswich Town are reportedly considering allowing a “really good” player to leave the club in the January transfer window, following a tough start to the season.

Ipswich eyeing first Premier League win

Kieran McKenna’s side have predictably found life back in the Premier League tough, failing to win any of their opening eight games in the competition this season.

The Tractor Boys have at least managed to pick up four draws in that time, ensuring that they don’t currently sit in the relegation zone, but there is no question that improvements are needed, especially after last weekend’s disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to struggling Everton.

Next up for Ipswich is Saturday’s trip to Brentford in the league, which while clearly far from an easy task, should be viewed as a game where McKenna’s men could pick up their maiden victory of the campaign.

For that to happen, though, a strong team performance will be required away to the 13th-place Bees, with players turning up and performing to the best of their abilities. A key update has now emerged regarding the future of one individual – one that may not bode well for him.

Ipswich could axe "really good" player in January

According to Football Insider, Ipswich could sanction the exit of Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window, with the Englishman struggling to enjoy a positive impact at Portman Road. The report claims that the club are “amazed” at the 28-year-old’s “lack of mobility and running power”, with senior figures also feeling that his “head is still at Leeds”, and could now terminate his loan contract with Manchester City.

Seeing Phillips departing so soon after arriving on loan at Ipswich would be a real shame, both for the player and the club, but there is no doubt that he isn’t enjoying the impact he would have hoped for back in the summer. The £150,000-a-week Englishman has started five Premier League games, but his displays haven’t been the dominant ones he used to produce so often in a Leeds shirt, with 0.6 aerial duel wins and 0.2 blocks per game coming his way in the league.

The frustrating aspect of Phillips is that he is clearly an extremely effective player when he wants to be, with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola lauding him back in July during pre-season, saying: “Kalvin was really good.

“When he can get the ball and see all of the pitch in front of him he is a really good player. When I have him in smaller spaces we have more problems. With the ball he was really good and helped us a lot. I am very, very pleased with his performance.”

Sadly, Phillips’ career has nosedived fairly spectacularly ever since he departed for City, however, losing not only his place in England’s starting lineup, but also the squad.

A season later, they began with four Ls in a row, and went on to win the title.They didn’t begin quite as poorly this season, but in the context of their recent domination of the league, this has been their worst IPL in quite a while. It’s now that time in the season, however, when they invariably build serious steam, and they’re now in fifth, with only net run-rate separating them from fourth, with three games left to play.Two of those games, their last two league matches, are against the bottom-two teams, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad.This is why every other playoffs contender would want Delhi Capitals to beat Mumbai Indians on Saturday. If you’re hunting for an IPL title, you want the team with the most experience and title-winning knowhow out of the picture as soon as possible.Capitals are currently in second, in the playoffs, but cast your mind back to last season, when they were in a similar situation only to lose five of their last six league games and find themselves with a more or less must-win fixture on their last day of league play.They wouldn’t want that sort of drama this time around. After Mumbai, the Capitals’ last two league opponents would be the teams currently in first and third, Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Given the importance of a top-two finish, neither will be in any mood to do a title rival any favours.Qualification chancesKolkata Knight Riders’ defeat against Punjab Kings is a result that both Mumbai and Capitals will be happy with. Currently, it is possible for three teams to reach 20 points, so even a win against Mumbai won’t assure them of a top-two position, but it will certainly be a big step in that direction. The others who have achieved the feat are Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Brendon McCullum, Shane Watson and AB de Villiers, with Aaron Finch currently on 399. Mumbai have struggled with the bat in the death overs this season, with a scoring rate of only 8.23. It’s the worst they’ve ever done in that phase in any season of the IPL. For some context, they went at an all-time-best 12.56 last season.

واستمر: “الأمر لا يتعلق كثيرًا بتيبو كورتوا نفسه، بل بالاتحاد البلجيكي لكرة القدم، هذا لا يتماشى مع المعايير والقيم التي أراها مناسبة لمنتخب او لمنظومة رياضية”.

وأضاف: “لا أحمل أي ضغينة تجاه كورتوا، بل أن مشكلتي مع الاتحاد، لقد التقيت به في الصيف الماضي في إيبيزا وتحدثنا عن الأمر كثيرًا”.

وواصل تصريحاته: “لا توجد أي مشكلة مع تيبو نفسه، أنا شخص لدي مبادئ، إذا وافقوا على هذا السلوك وصفقوا له، فليمضوا قدمًا لكن بدوني، واعتبارًا من اليوم، لم أعد متاحًا للمنتخب”.

ويلعب كاستيلس في الوقت الحالي مع نادي القادسية المنافس في الدوري السعودي، بعد فترة طويل قضاها مع فريق فولفسبورج.

O lance, até parece rápido olhando de fora, mas na cabeça de Deyvinho durou uma eternidade, pensando o que seria se ele perdesse o gol.

-Na verdade quando eu roubei aquela bola ali… Vou contar uma coisa para vocês que não contei para ninguém. Vocês serão os primeiros a saber. Quando eu peguei aquela bola ali, que eu roubei, falei assim “p** que p*, por que eu roubei essa bola, irmão? Se eu fizer o gol, eu sou o cara, mas se eu perder, irmão, esquece, estou no inferno”. Apesar de saber que sua estrela brilhou na final da Liberta, ele tem noção de que tudo aquilo aconteceu por conta de toda uma estrutura montada por Abel Ferreira para chegar naquele resultado. “Havertz has been brilliant recently,” said Brown to Football Insider.

“You have to give people like that a lot of credit because questions have been asked of him and a lot of people would have shied away. But he’s done a great job for them. You have to credit Mikel Arteta because he’s brought this out of him. I’ve heard, though, that if there was the right option out there, Arsenal still want to buy somebody in that position.

“The problem is there’s not a long list of players who are good enough to play that role and are also available to come to the Premier League. Arsenal won’t want to waste any money they have on a player they don’t need.

“They’ll be prudent, but I know they’ll be looking for areas they can improve, and I think that will be one even with Havertz playing as well as he has been.”

This also comes amid Jesus’ questionable form. The Brazilian is yet to get off the mark in all competitions this season, leading to doubts about his suitability to lead the line for Arsenal going forward.

There are suggestions that Jesus could leave Arsenal and Arteta is a real fan of Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush as his replacement – among other potential targets.
