Diaz sold, £216m spent: What Arne Slot’s dream Liverpool XI could be

Jurgen Klopp has cemented himself as the stuff of legend at Liverpool, transforming Anfield and guiding his team to illustrious honours such as the Premier League and the Champions League across nine years of barnstorming brilliance.

His successor, Arne Slot, arrives off the back of success in his Dutch homeland with Feyenoord, winning the Eredivisie in 2022/23 before clinching the KNVB Trophy last season. He plays good, purposeful pressing football, with a smattering of Pep Guardiola-esque possession techniques to promise an exciting new era.

But he needs to be backed. Liverpool might have enjoyed a resurgence during Klopp's final year but there are plenty of issues to address: Joel Matip's exit has left the Reds with three senior centre-backs, one of whom was playing in League One 13 months ago.

Moreover, several salient members of the squad have contract issues that need a quick resolution, while Luis Diaz is attracting interest from Barcelona and a decision must be made on whether the 27-year-old is to be sold.

Much to sort out, but FSG and Slot have their wits about them and will be confident to sculpt a high-class team capable of succeeding. Let's take a look at how it might look, shall we?

Liverpool-Dream-XI-Arne-Slot

1 GK – Alisson

Alisson Becker.

It wasn't the best of years for Alisson, who only completed 28 fixtures in the Premier League as he battled injuries, but the Brazil goalkeeper is still one of the very best in the business.

Aged 31, he's surely got plenty left in the tank, and while Saudi suitors might be sniffing around, with The Guardian even reporting in May that he is a top target, the colossal shot-stopper will be eager to stay put and fight for more silverware on Merseyside.

2 RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold celebrates for Liverpool

Let's just put you here, Trent Alexander-Arnold. Nice and safe and away from Real Madrid's all-conquering machine. The Anfield vice-captain is one of the finest players around and will be expected to play a starring role in this new era in his home city.

The 25-year-old has posted 100 goal contributions from 310 appearances for Liverpool. From right-back. Slot will be keenly observing his performances in Germany this summer, with Gareth Southgate's desire to play him in midfield sure to raise some questions in the Liverpool manager's mind.

3 CB – Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool

For the first time in his Liverpool career, with any real constancy, Virgil van Dijk could find himself playing alongside Alexander-Arnold, shifted to his naturally favoured right side to accommodate Liverpool's new summer signing – but more on him in a moment.

It's easy to forget how steep Liverpool's defensive injury problems were last season, with pretty much every member spending a spell on the sidelines at one point or another.

Van Dijk, however, was ever-present. An implacable adversary for Anfield's opposition and an imperious leader. He scored the winning goal in the Carabao Cup final, he led by example. Liverpool's captain will be the main man once again come August.

4 CB – Willian Pacho

Willian Pacho in action for Frankfurt

Liverpool need to sign a new centre-back, and while a host of names have already been linked, the club would score a major win in landing Willian Pacho from Eintracht Frankfurt.

The German club are actually keen for Liverpool to act on interest in the 22-year-old titan and maximise profits, with Pacho valued at €60m (£51m).

Manager Tino Toppmoller said that his defending "is absolutely world-class". Young and dynamic, he's exactly what the Redmen need.

5 LB – Andy Robertson

Andy Robertson for Liverpool.

Andy Robertson split opinion last season but the Scotland captain endured an injury-hit year and still managed to produce spirited and creative performances. He also plays the kind of passing game that Slot demands from his full-backs.

As per Sofascore, the 30-year-old scored three goals and added two assists across 23 matches, completing 88% of his passes, creating ten big chances and averaging 2.8 key passes and 1.5 tackles per outing.

6 CM – Joao Neves

SL Benfica star Joao Neves

This would be the one. The statement signing to show that Liverpool and their new leader mean business. Joao Neves has attracted a long list of suitors for his maiden performances in Portugal, and while he has a £102m release clause, the 19-year-old is the real deal.

The Benfica midfielder – described as "special" by analyst Ben Mattinson – is shaping into quite the all-encompassing midfielder and would be a major upgrade on Wataru Endo, perhaps proving the difference in the fight for trophies under Slot.

7 CM – Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Reprising his starring role in the middle of the park, Alexis Mac Allister could find his game lifted to the next level alongside a robust young partner in Neves.

Endo did a solid job last season but the 31-year-old is not one of the leading holding midfielders in Europe, and the Portuguese's tough-tackling base could allow Mac Allister to play a multi-functioning, all-action role to perfection.

8 RW – Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool

There can only be one man on that right flank. Mohamed Salah might be entering the final year of his contract but the pointers suggest that he is going to be plying his trade at Anfield next season, and it's a good thing too.

The Egyptian, who turns 32 on Saturday, scored 25 goals and supplied 14 assists during the 2023/24 campaign, and while he fizzled out at the end, he is still one of the most frightening and destructive forwards on English shores and will be key in ensuring Slot's set-up is implemented smoothly.

9 AM – Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai scores for Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai ebbed and flowed during his first season in Liverpool colours and ended up on the periphery during Klopp's final weeks, starting just one of six Premier League games to close the campaign.

Still, the Hungary captain is a technically gifted and hungry midfielder, who may benefit greatly from Slot's 4-2-3-1 system, allowing him to advance to his favoured No. 10 role and away from the central, more industrious part that Klopp had him play.

10 LW – Crysencio Summerville

Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville

So, if Barcelona manage to mount something resembling a concerted approach for Diaz's signature, signing for something resembling Liverpool's €75m (£63m) price tag, then there's a perfect young replacement waiting to make the move.

Of course, we're talking about Crysencio Summerville, who might have failed to enjoy promotion to the Premier League with Leeds United last term but did everything in his power, scoring 19 goals, providing nine assists for his teammates and even being crowned the Championship's Player of the Year.

Fabrizio Romano writes that Liverpool have scouted the Dutchman for months and could make their move soon, and at £30m, he could mark the dream addition to a team in transition – even suggested to be cut from the same cloth as one Sadio Mane.

Shaheen Afridi's second five-for seals dominant Khyber Pakhtunkhwa win

Afridi took 5-21 while Imam-ul-Haq made 88 to give Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan their third win each

Danyal Rasool05-Oct-2020

Shaheen Afridi picked up five wickets•PCB

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa beat Sindh by 8 wickets
Shaheen Afridi’s second five-wicket haul of the tournament inspired Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to their third win in four matches, beating Sindh by eight wickets. Afridi removed the top three and returned at the death to pick up another two wickets to restrict Sindh to 184, despite a 111-run partnership between opener Sharjeel Khan, who smashed 90 off just 56 balls, and Ahsan Ali, who contributed with 42.Before Afridi returned for his second spell, Sindh sat pretty at 165 for three with three overs still to go, well on target to achieve 200, which has become the de facto par score for the tournament. By the time the innings was finished, however, Afridi had figures of 5-21, and Sarfaraz Ahmed’s side had fallen well short of that mark. It was something of a lone hand from Afridi, with seasoned hands Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Hafeez going at 11 and 14 per over respectively. There was no fuss about the way KP went about the chase. Fakhar Zaman’s 41-ball 61 was an effective riposte to Sharjeel’s knock at the top, with the left-hander shaking off the early loss of opening partner Mohammad Rizwan. Four fours and as many sixes from Hafeez in a knock that saw him plunder 72 off 42 effectively continued his bright start to the competition, while an unbeaten 21-ball 40 from Iftikhar Ahmed took the game beyond the finish line.None of Sindh’s bowlers were able to make much of an impression. Anwar Ali did take both wickets, but it couldn’t stop him from conceding 40 in his four, with Mir Hamza and Mohammad Asghar’s 7 overs combining for 79. It condemned Sindh to their third loss in four games, which means they sit only above Southern Punjab in the table, who have lost all four matches.Balochistan beat Central Punjab by 3 runs
In the evening game, Balochistan defended 168 in a thrilling contest thanks to Umar Gul and Yasir Shah sharing seven Central Punjab wickets between them. Thirty-six year-old Umar Gul rolled back the years to take four wickets, crucially dismissing Kamran Akmal, who, with 25 off 15, was threatening to play the sort of match-winning knock he has delivered so often at this level. The centurion in the first game, 20-year old Abdullah Shafiq, followed up with another impressive half-century before Gul cleaned up his stumps to bring Balochistan back into the game. From the other end, Yasir kept making regular inroads, removing Abid Ali, Rizwan Hussain and captain Saad Nasim before Umaid Asif held his nerve in the final over, restricting Central Punjab to 165.Having elected to bat first, Baochistan didn’t quite capitalise in the way they might have planned, though Imam-ul-Haq’s hot form continued, the opener scoring a 55-ball 80. But he didn’t have much company alongside him once Awais Zia and Haris Sohail fell; no other batsman so much as managed double-figures. Central Punjab’s bowlers might have felt they had done enough to win the game, opening bowlers Qasim Akram and Sohaibullah only conceding 58 in their eight overs, while Ehsan Adil and Zafar Gohar took five wickets between them. Failure to get rid of Imam, however, proved crucial, with Balochistan putting up just enough on the board to fetch them their third win in four.

IPL 2020 scenarios: Mumbai one win away from playoffs; CSK eliminated

Mumbai Indians’ loss against the Rajasthan Royals has not hampered Mumbai’s chances of qualifying for the playoffs. They still need to win just one of their remaining three matches to make the final four. The Royals, however, are now at sixth place with 10 points, and can reach a maximum of 14. By beating Mumbai on Sunday, the Royals have also knocked the Chennai Super Kings out of the playoff race for the first time in the history of the competition. Despite the heroics by Ben Stokes to help get the Royals over the line, their playoff spot will still depend on how the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Kings XI Punjab and the Sunrisers Hyderabad go in their remaining fixtures. The Royals’ next two games are against the Kings XI and the Knight Riders; both of them are placed above the Royals and also take on each other on Monday. If the Kings XI beat the Knight Riders and then both the teams lose their last two games, the Royals can qualify without net run rate coming into play as they will reach 14 points, whereas the Kings XI and the Knight Riders will have 12.If the Kings XI or the Sunrisers manage to reach 14, though, the Royals have a very slim chance to make the final four on net run rate, as theirs is a poor -0.505. The only team’s NRR they can possibly match is the Knight Riders’ (-0.476), so they will hope to compete only with the Knight Riders for that fourth spot.

Southampton now preparing £20m bid for "wonderful" goalscoring midfielder

An exciting Southampton transfer rumour has emerged, with a report claiming they are preparing to table a £20m bid for the services of a "wonderful" player this summer.

Southampton transfer news

Saints are getting ready for life back in the Premier League, with Russell Martin's side looking to avoid the same fate as last season's promoted sides, in terms of going straight back down to the Championship. New signings need to come in, with plenty being mooted of late.

Defender Charlie Taylor will reportedly complete a move to Southampton on July 1st, arriving there on a free transfer, which could be a shrewd piece of business. The 30-year-old has made 287 appearances in the Premier League and Championship combined, 161 of which have come in the former.

Burnley defender Charlie Taylor.

Espanyol striker Martin Braithwaite has also been linked with a summer move to Saints, with none other than Barcelona and Liverpool legend Luis Suarez describing him as "great" in the past, highlighting the ability and experience that he possesses as a depth option up front.

Speaking of Liverpool, Reds defender Sepp van den Berg is also thought to be on Southampton's radar, as he looks to finally seal a permanent move away from Anfield after several loan spells. The 22-year-old is valued at £12.5m, and could be an exciting addition for Martin's men.

Southampton preparing £20m bid for "wonderful" ace

According to The Daily Record's Scott Burns, Southampton are preparing to table a £20m offer for Celtic attacking midfielder Matt O'Riley. The huge bid with "future add-ons included" could even "potentially take the deal past" the Hoops' record sale of £25m for Kieran Tierney and Jota.

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

O'Riley was a standout player for Celtic last season, playing a big role in their Scottish Premiership title triumph, proving to be a relentless source of end product. The Dane scored 18 goals and registered 13 assists in the league, possessing a wand-like left foot and being lauded by Brendan Rodgers.

Admittedly, there could be some trepidation about the money spent on O'Riley because the step up from Scotland to the Premier League is huge, but he has proven himself at international level as well, winning two caps for Denmark to date. At just 23 years of age, he will hope to significantly add to that tally in the coming years.

These are the calibre of signings that Southampton need to be making if they are to avoid a quick return to the Championship, and the Celtic man has the creativity and flair to become a hero at St Mary's, adding an extra dimension in attacking midfield areas.

Could be Gascoigne 2.0: Rangers in the mix to sign "exciting" prospect

Glasgow Rangers head of recruitment Nils Koppen has been a busy man during the summer transfer window so far, snapping up plenty of talent for Philippe Clement.

The seventh signing of the summer was officially confirmed earlier this week when Hamza Igamane, an U23 forward, was unveiled to the Ibrox faithful.

They have also added Jefte, Connor Barron, Clinton Nsiala, Liam Kelly, Oscar Cortes, and Mohammed Diomande to the squad, although the latter two have both re-joined after their time at Rangers in the second half of last term.

This comes after the Light Blues failed to win the Scottish Premiership in the 2023/24 campaign, eventually finishing second to their local rivals for the third season running.

Koppen and Clement are now making wholesale changes to the squad, with the likes of Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, and Kemar Roofe having also left as free agents, to ensure that the team is ready to compete for the title next season.

Rangers eyeing up Premier League whiz

According to Dave Ockop, the Light Blues are now in the market to add another midfield talent to their ranks in the form of Liverpool's Bobby Clark.

The report claims that Rangers are now in the mix to sign the talented young midfielder to bolster their squad before the end of the summer transfer window.

Koppen will have to beat off competition from several clubs in the race to land the former Newcastle youngster, though, as RB Salzburg, RB Leipzig, and Norwich City are also keen on him.

Salzburg are managed by Pep Lijnders, who was Jurgen Klopp's assistant at Anfield, and they may, therefore, have the edge in this race due to that direct link with the Reds and Clark.

Liverpool player Bobby Clark warming up.

The report states that Liverpool are planning to open talks with the 19-year-old maestro this month to secure a new contract for him, in order to ensure that his long-term future is on Merseyside.

It adds that the Premier League side are yet to make a decision on what they want to do with him for the upcoming season, though, and Rangers may need to wait to find out whether or not they have an opportunity to sign him on loan.

If Koppen and Clement can land a swoop for the exciting young whiz, though, then they could land the club's next version of the mercurial Paul Gascoigne.

Paul Gascoigne's Rangers career

The English icon joined the Scottish giants from Lazio in the summer of 1995 and enjoyed just shy of three years in Glasgow, showing off his attacking talent in the middle of the park.

Gascoigne was an incredibly gifted midfielder who could play in a number eight or ten role and burst forward to provide the team with quality at the top end of the pitch.

He racked up 39 goals in 102 appearances in all competitions across three seasons at Ibrox, which illustrates the immense threat the former Tottenham Hotspur magician was a goalscorer.

Unfortunately, assist numbers were not tracked for Rangers at that time so it is unclear as to how many goals he set up for his teammates, but Gascoigne's scoring prowess on its own was enough to make him a huge player for the club.

The Ibrox giants could now find their next version of the former England international by signing Clark from Liverpool, on loan or permanently, as the young ace has been compared to the ex-Gers star.

Back in 2021, Newcastle Chronicle reporter Lee Ryder described the teenage talent as an "exciting" and "dynamic" player who was set to be a star for the Magpies before his move to Anfield.

The journalist then compared Clark to how Gascoigne was at Newcastle at a similar age, referencing the Rangers target's "raw" skills and claiming that they were comparable at that age.

Ryder finished by saying that the Liverpool youngster may have the right guidance and nutrition around him to fulfill his potential and become a "complete" player in the future.

Why Rangers should sign Bobby Clark

The Gers should swoop to sign the 19-year-old midfielder because his career so far, at youth and senior level, suggests that he could develop into a fantastic talent.

Clark has emerged as a first-team option for the Reds after catching the eye with his impressive performances in the middle of the park in the academy for the Premier League giants.

Bobby Clark for Liverpool

The right-footed maestro showcased his attacking quality for the U18s with an excellent return of 13 goals and five assists in 27 appearances in all competitions.

As you can see in the table above, Clark caught the eye with his limited game time in Europe during the 2023/24 campaign for the English giants.

The Rangers target showcased his quality in and out of possession with two goal involvements in less than 100 minutes played and an eye-catching six tackles won.

His duel success rate of 82%, albeit in a small sample size, also suggests that he may be ready for the physicality that comes with regular senior football.

Therefore, this could be the right time for him to emerge as a first-team regular and that could happen at Ibrox as Gascoigne 2.0 with his ability to score and create goals from a central or attacking midfield role.
