The summer of 2024 will represent much change at Liverpool Football Club. For the first time in nine years, the Reds will experience a new manager taking over the reins, with Jurgen Klopp departing following the end of the Premier League season.

His replacement is former AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord manager Arne Slot, who will take charge of a club outside of his native country the Netherlands for the first time in his career. Klopp confirmed the appointment after Liverpool’s last Premier League game when he began a chant at Anfield in Slot’s name.

As with any summer, speculation has begun to ramp up for Liverpool about who they could sign. However, this transfer window feels slightly different, given the appointment of Slot, and there is more uncertainty surrounding the club.

At this current stage of the summer, the amount of money at Slot’s disposal in the 2024 transfer window has not been confirmed. However, he will no doubt look to strengthen the squad in a few areas to bolster his side ahead of a vital first summer at Anfield.

There were rumours recently that Mohamed Salah might leave Anfield in the summer, although they were squashed recently, with neither the club nor player considering a departure. However, there is one player who Liverpool have targeted to be Slot’s first incoming at the club.

The man in question here is RB Leipzig and Spain midfielder Dani Olmo. The 26-year-old attacking midfielder is highly thought of in the Liverpool ranks, and he could well be the first signing under Slot this summer.

According to reports in Spain, the Reds “have begun to move” for Olmo. The Spain international has a £51m release clause in his current contract, although that is rumoured to expire on the 15th of July this year.

It's stated that Liverpool are not the only club hunting Olmo’s signature this summer. They believe that fellow English clubs Manchester City and Manchester United are interested, with European giants Bayern Munich and Barcelona also wanting to bring him to their respective clubs. The amount of interest in Olmo is perhaps unsurprising, given his impressive form in the 2023/24 season for Leipzig.

Indeed, there's a suggestion that Olmo’s preference this summer is to join Barcelona, yet that might not be a possibility for the 26-year-old. Their financial issues are persisting after some tough years on the fiscal side of things. Barca might not have the luxury of spending £51m on Olmo, no matter how much they, or the player, want the move. Enter Liverpool, who are poised to sign him if he can’t join Barca.

Why Dani Olmo would be a good signing

The biggest red flag when it comes to signing Olmo is the fact he has struggled with injuries over the course of the season.

He has missed 29 games for Leipzig and Spain in 2023/24, the most he has missed in a single campaign and did not play the last few games. However, Olmo has been named in Spain’s provisional Euro 2024 squad, suggesting he is over his latest fitness issue.

Injuries aside, however, there is no doubt that Olmo is a fantastic footballer, a sentiment that legendary Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola shares. Following Olmo’s goal for Dinamo Zagreb against the Cityiens in 2019, Guardiola described his countryman as “incredible”, explaining that “he has a bright future”, and that he can one day “play in the strong leagues in Europe”.

Olmo has impressed this season for Leipzig, despite his limited game time. The Spaniard has played 25 games in all competitions, scoring eight goals and registering five assists. He registered a hat-trick in the German Supercup against Bayern Munich at the start of the term to secure Leipzig the trophy.

Interestingly, there are some similarities between Olmo and the La Liga player of the season, Jude Bellingham. According to Fbref, Olmo averages 1.99 key passes per 90 minutes, compared to Bellingham’s 1.87 key passes per 90 minutes.

Not only that, the Spaniard averages 3.79 shot-creating actions per 90 minutes, with Bellingham averaging 3.85 shot-creating actions per 90 minutes. There is little difference in their goal-creating actions per 90 minutes, too, with the Leipzig number seven averaging 0.5 per 90 minutes, and the Englishman 0.51 per 90 minutes.

However, where Olmo really excels is when carrying the ball. He is a wonderful, fluid dribbler and uses his body to roll defenders with ease, just like Bellingham excels in. He is superb on the half turn and is able to glide past defenders once he has received the ball, with his impressive close control helping him keep possession.

In fact, he is actually statistically better than the Ballon d'Or contender when carrying the ball. Olmo averages 3.73 progressive carries per 90 minutes, 3.04 carries into the final third per 90 minutes, and 1.12 carries into the penalty area per 90 minutes.

In comparison, Bellingham averages just 3.31 progressive carries per 90 minutes, 2.84 carries into the final third per 90 minutes and 1.01 carries into the penalty area per 90 minutes. The only area the Englishman pips the Liverpool target in is completed take-ons per 90 minutes, with the former averaging 1.95, compared to Olmo’s 1.93.

Signing the Leipzig star could give Liverpool their answer to Bellingham, who they targeted last summer, although pulled out of a deal before his move to Real Madrid. Instead, signing the Spanish sensation could add a like-for-like option to their squad, raising the technical ceiling given Olmo’s excellent ability on the ball.

For £51m, it could certainly be a deal that offers a great option for Liverpool this summer, and start the Slot revolution in the best possible way. It would not be an easy deal to do, given the other clubs targeting him, but he would be a superb signing, and, as Guardiola said, they would be signing an “incredible” player if they brought him to Anfield.

Big pictureEvery IPL season, the Royal Challengers Bangalore look like one of the teams to beat on paper. They invariably have plenty of superstars, their supporters are filled with hope and all eyes are fixed on them. So far, there have been 12 seasons without a trophy, though. But the Sunrisers Hyderabad are in some ways the opposite of that. They don’t generate as much chatter, but they have been in the playoffs every year since 2016, when they even won the title, before finishing runners-up in 2018.The Royal Challengers come into this edition having tried to sort the issues that plagued them in the last two seasons: an over-dependence on Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, and leaking runs at the death. Thus, they have added Aaron Finch – who will most likely open the batting for them – and paid a big sum to get allrounder Chis Morris. They also bought back Dale Steyn, who briefly gave their bowling the spark it had been missing in 2019 but was then injured. For the Sunrisers, there were no glaring gaps to plug, and they instead opted to strengthen their squad with smart buys such as Fabian Allen and Abdul Samad, both bought at the base price. The splurging by the Royal Challengers and the more restrained buying by the Sunrisers was again in keeping with the way both teams have operated over the years.Despite the contrasts, though, when it comes to the battle on the field between these two, things have been very even. Since his debut, only Boyd Rankin has conceded runs at a fewer rate, at 5.5 – given a minimum of 50 overs bowled. AB de Villiers is thee sixes away from getting to 400 in all T20s. He could get to the landmark easily if he bats long enough. Although prolific in all cricket, one of the few holes in Virat Kohli’s resume is his recent record against the Sunrisers. Since IPL 2018, he averages only 17.5 against them, and the strike rate of 121 is also not too hot. This is his opportunity to set that record right.

The entire squad at Chelsea is absolutely packed with talent, but the midfield department is particularly special.

Enzo Fernandez, Conor Gallagher, and Moises Caicedo are surely the future of the Blues midfield, given their age and quality.

Enzo Maresca must be incredibly excited to install his philosophy into the aforementioned trio, who all suit his play style perfectly.

Gallagher and Caicedo are particularly valuable to Chelsea, yet with that in mind, let’s take a look at a Chelsea star who’s now worth even more than the two midfielders.

Having progressed through the ranks at Manchester City, Cole Palmer finally earned his breakthrough in the 2021/22 campaign, making four appearances.

In the following season, he’d go on to feature more frequently, playing 14 Premier League games but only starting twice, picking up just one assist.

Nevertheless, last summer, Chelsea saw the potential in the number 20 and took the risk of paying £40m to acquire the forward on Deadline Day.

Todd Boehly believed that he would play a huge role in the rebuilding of the club, and Palmer signed a seven-year contract, which has the option to extend for a further 12 months.

This also means that the versatile attacker is worth more than Gallagher and Caicedo, £51m and £68m, which is incredible considering the latter arrived for a record-breaking fee of £115.

For further context on just how valuable he is, Palmer is currently also the joint-highest-valued attacking midfielder in the world, alongside German duo Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz.

The fact that Palmer registered the most goal contributions in the entire Premier League last season is just one reason why his value has skyrocketed.

However, what will please Boehly is that if Palmer has an impact at the European Championships with England this summer, his estimated worth will only increase even further.

Overall, the signing of Palmer was without doubt the bargain of the 2023/24 season, and it’s fair to say that Chelsea truly hit the jackpot on their £40m superstar.

Reports certainly suggest that's the case too, with Eberechi Eze and Riccardo Calafiori already linked with a move to North London this summer. The young defender was a standout even after his side conceded within 23 seconds.

Calafiori isn't the only Euro 2024 defender to keep an eye on when it comes to Spurs either, it seems. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Spurs now want to sign Nikola Milenkovic from Fiorentina this summer. The central defender has also attracted interest from West Ham United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Fulham in a busy race that Spurs should be looking to win this summer.

Milenkovic impressed in Serbia's Euro 2024 opener against England. Whilst his side came out 1-0 losers, Milenkovic played a large part in keeping Kane quiet, which is no easy task. By the end of the game, the Bayern Munich star had been limited to just one touch in the Serbia box and one shot, as per Statman James, highlighting the job that Milenkovic and the rest of Serbia's backline completed.

"Perfect" Milenkovic is Premier League ready

If keeping one of the Premier League's greatest ever players quiet doesn't say that Milenkovic is ready for such a move this summer, then not much will. The defender could prove to be the difference next to either Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven to truly solidify Postecoglou's backline with three quality options. What's more, if Romero did leave, Spurs would have enough depth to cover for his exit.

Depois de nove jogos, o Flamengo fechou a “maratona” de agosto de forma inapelável: com uma nova goleada na semana, desta vez diante do Santos, por 4 a 0, pela 18ª rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro e na Vila Belmiro. O elenco de Renato Gaúcho, agora, terá uma pausa durante a Data Fifa com tempo de sobra para impulsionar o rendimento e se tornar ainda mais letal na sequência da temporada.

Foram sete vitórias, um empate e uma derrota neste mês, em que o Flamengo não jogará mais, pois, por conta de jogos adiados pela CBF, só voltará a campo no dia 12 de setembro, em duelo direto pelo título, diante do Palmeiras, fora de casa. E, diante desse cenário, o LANCE! separou três fatores que mais devem colaborar com Renato no intervalo sem jogos. Veja:

SISTEMA DE MARCAÇÃO

O Flamengo goleou Grêmio e Santos nos dois últimos jogos, sendo o primeiro pela ida das quartas da Copa do Brasil. Mas, apesar de os placares sinalizarem atuações irreparáveis, um olhar mais crítico constata a fragilidade no sistema de marcação individual de Renato Gaúcho, que tem proporcionado aos rivais espaços entre o meio e zaga com uma frequência preocupante.

Diego e Willian Arão não têm dado conta dos encaixes por dentro, e o tempo para treinar com ambos tende a afinar as movimentações ou até promover um novo modelo defensivo, como ocorreu no segundo tempo contra o Grêmio, com um a menos, quando o treinador optou por uma marcação por zona, que surtiu efeito, sobretudo contando com a maior “pegada” de Thiago Maia.

MATHEUZINHO ENTRE OS TITULARES

Como Isla está convocado para jogos nas Eliminatórias Sul-Americanas, a tendência é que Matheuzinho treine entre os titulares. O jovem lateral-direito está pedindo passagem; e não é de hoje. Tanto na fase defensiva quanto ofensiva, tem conseguido destaque e bons números quando acionado, geralmente vindo do banco de reservas. Contra o Santos, por exemplo, foi uma arma fundamental no apoio e colaborou diretamente para a goleada na Vila.

Caso aproveite as sessões de treinamento nesse ínterim, Matheuzinho terá uma oportunidade de ouro para conquistar de vez a vaga e conseguir uma sequência entre os 11. O chileno segue deixando a desejar no Flamengo.

ENTROSAMENTO DOS REFORÇOS

No último jogo, Andreas Pereira entrou e atuou por dez minutos, aproximadamente. Foi o suficiente para apresentar ótimas credenciais nas duas fases do jogo. No ataque, foi frio e categórico para marcar o seu primeiro gol pelo Fla. E agora ele terá a sua maior série de treinos com os novos companheiros, o que permitirá a Portaluppi testá-lo entre os titulares em diversas funções do meio, usufruindo de sua versatilidade (veja mais aqui).

O plantel se reapresenta nesta quarta-feira, no Ninho do Urubu, quando Renato Gaúcho terá o primeiro contato com Kenedy no gramado, aliás. O meia-atacante, também contratado por empréstimo de um ano e com potencial para “chegar e jogar”, é outro que será favorecido em prol da adaptação ao Brasil e ao time.

É possível, inclusive, que Kenedy, a iniciar testes físicos nesta segunda, seja treinado na vaga de Everton Ribeiro, que foi convocado por Tite para a próxima leva das Eliminatórias – vale lembrar que Gabigol também está na lista.
