Arsenal could sign £86m-rated "world-class" ace to be their own Salah

After what must have felt like an incredibly long time away from football following their festive season collapse, Arsenal stormed to a 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta's men looked like they were getting back to their best, with Gabriel Martinelli picking up a Thierry Henry-esque brace from the bench, although Bukayo Saka left the pitch without a goal or assist to his name.

The talismanic winger has seen his on-field impact dwindle somewhat over the last month or so – one goal in seven games – but with little in the way of genuine competition on the right wing, Arteta hasn't got much of a choice but to start him.

However, the latest player touted for a move to N5 could provide the challenge the Englishman needs, and with comparisons to Mohamed Salah, a challenge it would be.

Arsenal look to Germany for rightwing depth

According to reports from Spain, Arsenal are seriously interested in signing Bayern Munich's Leroy Sane in 2024, with Arteta seeing the German 'as the perfect signing to increase competition on the right wing'.

The report has also revealed that alongside the Gunners, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are keen to land the winger's signature this year.

While the competition from their Premier League rivals is far from ideal for the north Londoners, the fact that Sane's current contract with Bayern is set to expire next summer is.

A potential transfer fee has yet to be reliably reported, but the CIES football observatory values the 28-year-old at around €100m – £86m – and while that is undeniably expensive, it might prove to be value for money if he can replicate his performances in the red of Bayern in N5.

ByMatt Dawson Jan 21, 2024 How Sane compares to Saka and Salah

Now, for a modern-day winger, there are few – if any – more flattering comparisons than Liverpool's Egyptian king, Salah. However, according to FBref, the outrageously talented wideman is the third most similar player to the German in Europe's top five leagues.

This conclusion is reached by comparing where players rank for specific important statistics to other players in the continent's top five leagues. Then, those who are in similar percentiles for multiple metrics are placed together.

For example, the "world-class" German, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, sits in the top 2% of wingers for assists per 90, as does Salah. Another example is non-penalty expected goals, with the Bayern star sitting in the top 3% of players and the Liverpool star ever so slightly ahead in the top 1%.

That said, with Arteta's initial interest in Sane stemming from a desire to give Saka more competition and improve his front line, how do the pair's underlying numbers compare?

Well, FC Hollywood's "level raiser", as data analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed him, might just help to raise the level at the Emirates as in every attacking metric bar aerial duels won, he emerges victorious.

While the margin of superiority is small in some areas, such as passing accuracy and progressive carries, it is vast for many others, like successful take-ons, shots on target and non-penalty expected goals and assists per 90.

In contrast, Saka is the clear winner when it comes to ball recoveries and the number of times each player is dispossessed or miscontrols the ball.

Moreover, if the Hale End star was placed into a team as domestically dominant as Bayern, he might also be able to produce offensive numbers as impressive as Sane. Still, as things stand, the German has him beaten in that regard.

Ultimately, if Arsenal can get a deal for the former Manchester City ace over the line – helped by Arteta's previous relationship with him – they absolutely should, as the potential competition between him and Saka can only make the team stronger.

Ryan Higgins, Chris Dent put on 318 as Gloucestershire overhaul Leicestershire

Higgins scores unbeaten 196, Dent 176 to rescue their side

A partnership of 318 between Ryan Higgins and Chris Dent for the sixth wicket saw Gloucestershire overhaul Leicestershire’s imposing first-innings score in their Specsavers County Championship match at the Fischer County Ground. It was the second partnership of more than 300 in the match, and came within two runs of matching the 320 put on by Hassan Azad and Neil Dexter for Leicestershire’s second wicket earlier in the game.Dent, who hit 176, and Higgins, who was on a first-class career-best 196 not out at the close of play, came together with Gloucestershire in trouble at 131 for 5 shortly before lunch. They had resumed on 41 for 3, needing 338 to avoid being asked to bat again. Dent and Benny Howell extended their fourth wicket partnership to 77 before Howell, having gone to his 50 off 70 balls, pushed forward to Chris Wright and edged to Colin Ackermann at second slip.Chris Dent drives•Getty Images

Leicestershire did not help themselves by failing to hold three tough chances during the session. Harry Dearden dropped Dent on 15 at third slip off the bowling of Mohammad Abbas, and then missed Howell on 31 at gully off Dieter Klein, while Neil Dexter at gully could not hang on to an edge by Jack Taylor off Wright before the batsman had scored.Taylor scored only five before being bowled by Will Davis, a full delivery that swung in and took a slight inside edge, and Dent, having gone to his 50 off 100 balls may have been fortunate to survive a concerted leg before appeal on 52. After that, however, neither he nor Higgins gave a chance as they set about a tiring Leicestershire attack on a pitch that flattened as the day went on.Dent’s 100 came off 204 balls, Higgins’ off 139 and, having left the county’s previous sixth-wicket record against Leicestershire of 153 set in 1931 well behind, both men galloped past 150, bringing up the 300 partnership off 65.2overs at a run rate of 4.58 runs per over.Leicestershire finally broke the partnership when Dent swung and missed at a straight delivery from Klein, having faced 311 balls and hit 25 fours and a six, but Higgins kept going, and was closing in on a maiden double century when an extended day finally came to a close.

Rangers may have a bigger talent than Jefte in 20y/o "surprise"

Glasgow Rangers had a relatively quiet deadline day, especially when all the talk prior was whether the Ibrox side would secure another centre-forward or not.

In the end, it appears Philippe Clement is comfortable heading into a busy few months with Cyriel Dessers and Fabio Silva as his attacking options.

Winger Oscar Cortes did join on deadline day, signing on an initial loan deal with an option to buy, and he looks like a promising talent, who could inject some pace and creativity into this Rangers side.

There were a few players who slipped through the net, however, and Clement may rue not bringing them to the club, most notably Brazilian left-back Jefte.

Rangers miss out on signing Jefte

Out of the blue last week, Fabrizio Romano delivered an update on the Gers transfer business and claimed that the club had reached an agreement to sign Jefte.

Considering the futures of Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz were unclear, it looked as though signing the talented youngster was an astute move for the Belgian manager, yet a few days later, Romano provided an update on the situation, saying:

“Jefté-Rangers deal has collapsed as Apoel are not willing to break loan for the second half of the season…

“…but I’m told Rangers have verbal pact in place to reactivate the option to sign Jefté in the summer transfer window.

“Deal could really happen in June.”

It looks as though the Light Blues will have to wait a few months to see him in action in Scotland, but will he be worth it?

Jefte could be a promising signing

The defender is currently on loan at APOEL Nicosia in Cyprus from Brazilian side Fluminense as he looks to get plenty of senior experience under his belt.

He has yet to make an appearance for the Brazilians but has registered six goal contributions across just 25 games for the U20 side, as he has demonstrated his attacking abilities on a regular basis.

His penchant for pushing forward as often as possible has shone through in Europe this term, as he has scored three goals and grabbed four assists in the Cypriot top flight, and these traits are clearly what attracted Clement to pursuing a deal for the player.

Not only does the 20-year-old rank fifth among the squad for key passes per game in the league this term (one), but he also ranks fourth for successful dribbles per game (2.4) and second for interceptions per game (4.2), showing he has impressed across a few metrics.

It is clear he is a talent who will only get better with age, and it shows Clement is thinking of the future, instead of bringing in a player who is perhaps at, or past, his peak.

The 49-year-old is certainly aiming to establish a player-trading model that could see the Gers sign youngsters relatively cheap before moving them on for major profits in the future if they develop as hoped.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

While they will have to wait a few months more to potentially see him in action at Ibrox, could the Belgian manager perhaps unearth a talented left-back who has shown promise in the academy between now and the end of the season?

Johnly Yfeko could develop into an even bigger talent than Jefte if he continues his impressive development, and it would not be a surprise to see him secure more minutes between now and May after the proposed signing of the Brazilian fell through.

Johnly Yfeko could be the next big thing to emerge from the academy at Rangers

The defender spent time in England with Leicester City and Southampton, making only 16 appearances in the youth teams for those sides.

He joined the Light Blues in January 2022 and showed enough during that time to earn a deal until 2024, and he swiftly became a key member of the B team during the 2022/23 season, making 14 appearances in the Lowland League.

With injury issues rife among the squad, Yfeko was brought into the matchday squad three times in November 2022, yet he failed to make his senior bow for the Gers.

The 20-year-old kept working hard and was given minutes during the pre-season friendlies against Hamburg and Newcastle United, and it looked as though Michael Beale had big plans for him going forward.

The manager even lauded him, saying: “Big Johnly Yfeko again is becoming the big surprise of pre-season, making everybody smile.”

Beale finally gave him his senior competitive debut against Greenock Morton in the League Cup clash back in August, and he was quick to assess his own performance following the match.

He said: “How did I enjoy my debut? I really enjoyed it, it was a good game.

“We could probably have scored a few more goals but I enjoyed my first game.

“The gaffer told me I still have a lot to learn and I need to keep myself fit, keep working hard on the training pitch and take in the information I have been given.”

The youngster signed a contract extension to keep him at Rangers until 2026, and it gives him plenty of time to continue his development and work on breaking his way into the first-team squad.

He has made the matchday squad only once during Clement’s reign thus far, in the 2-0 win over Motherwell on Christmas Eve, and he will be hoping for more chances between now and May.

Yfeko could follow in the footsteps of Calvin Bassey, who also joined from Leicester City as a youngster, before he eventually made his mark in the starting XI and sealed a wonderful move to Ajax.

With Jefte looking like he will land in Glasgow this summer, Yfeko may need to work even harder to gain chances next season, especially if Ridvan Yilmaz is here to stay.

There will be plenty of competition for a spot on the left side of the defence, yet the Englishman has proven he can feature for the first team, and competing for a place may just spur him on even more.

Rangers have a brilliant talent in Yfeko, who can play at centre-back or left-back, and he could have a massive future at the club if he continues to work hard and fight his way into the squad.

They could then possibly unearth a bigger talent than Jefte and negate any need to swoop in for the Brazilian left-back at the end of the season, as they could already have an excellent option in the building to compete for a first-team spot.

How Wade became too good for Australia to ignore

Matthew Wade has churned out the runs at state and Australia A level and has been rewarded with a place in the Ashes squad

Alex Malcolm26-Jul-2019

Matthew Wade celebrates a century•Getty Images

2016-17: Century, (brief) captaincy, injury, rainWade was Australia’s incumbent wicketkeeper-batsman in both Test and ODI cricket and he seemed entrenched in the 50-over format following an unbeaten century against Pakistan in January 2017. He was elevated to the captaincy for the 2016-17 one-day tour of New Zealand, but a back injury forced him out of the trip. In the Champions Trophy, where Australia’s campaign was hit by bad weather, he only got to the crease once.2017-18: The slump, dropped but sign of revivalFollowing lean Test and ODI tours to India in March and September he lost his place to Tim Paine, who had come back from the verge of retirement, in both the Test and 50-over formats, while Alex Carey took over the T20 job. Wade had a lean white-ball summer for Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes but finished the domestic season in sensational Sheffield Shield form making three centuries late in the season including one in the losing Shield final.2018-19: Barnstorming summerWade was not even considered for Australia’s tours of England, Zimbabwe and the UAE in 2018 which took place in the aftermath of the ball-tampering scandal. Paine captained the ODI team in England but was replaced by Carey in both white-ball teams thereafter. Wade went away and worked on his batting with Tasmania batting coach Jeff Vaughan and came out and plundered runs in all three forms the following summer.Across the season he made 1800 runs in total. He started with a century in the domestic 50-over competition against Victoria and never stopped. He made 571 Sheffield Shield runs at 63.44 prior to the BBL break, including another high-quality century against Victoria’s title-winning attack. He also plundered 592 BBL runs opening the batting for the Hurricanes, including six half-centuries at a strike-rate of 146.89. But despite clearly being the best batsman in Australian domestic cricket, Wade was overlooked for the revamped Test squad against Sri Lanka. Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said that Wade was batting too low for Tasmania to be considered while coach Justin Langer viewed him as a wicketkeeping option only.Wade rebuked both arguments publicly saying it did not make a lot of sense. He was named Australia’s domestic player of the year in early February and finished the season batting at No. 4 for Tasmania. He joined Marcus Harris as the second player to notch 1000 runs in the Shield season, a feat that had not been accomplished by anyone since 2014-15.2019: Carnage for Australia A and the World Cup callWade was called up to a strong Australia A squad to tour England after spending the off season contemplating giving up the gloves permanently in Shield cricket to boost his chances of returning to Test cricket as a batsman. He played the first two 50-over matches of the Australia A tour as a batsman only and scored a pair of jaw-dropping centuries against Northamptonshire and Derbyshire. He made 355 runs in four matches at an outrageous strike-rate of 182.05. Khawaja’s untimely hamstring injury provided an opportunity for Wade to finally return to the Australian squad, nearly two years on from his last appearance. He wasn’t selected for the World Cup semi-final, but he returned to the Australia A squad and promptly peeled off yet another century, this time against England Lions. He was struck on the elbow in the second innings, a blow that briefly threatened to derail his Ashes hopes, but there was no major damage. Alex Carey’s phenomenal World Cup form also muddied the waters in terms of Wade’s potential Ashes selection as either a back-up wicketkeeper or specialist batsman. He played as a specialist batsman in Australia’s trial game in Southampton and though he missed out in both innings on a difficult batting surface his form overall was just too good to ignore.

Arsenal in advanced talks with "key" Gunners star; Edu has led negotiations

In the title race once more, Arsenal will be firmly focused on getting things right on the pitch as they look to leapfrog both Manchester City and Liverpool – two sides they've already beaten this season. Whilst Mikel Arteta's side continue their recent rise, however, Edu Gaspar and co have been making decisions of their own away from The Emirates, which includes a potential new deal for one of the manager's most consistent players.

Arsenal contract news

Credit where it's due, Arsenal have turned things around on and off the pitch. The Gunners have gone from a side who look likely to lose their best players and recruiting future flops to a side who have managed to comfortably keep hold of the likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli whilst welcoming Declan Rice, Gabriel Jesus and others.

raphinha-bukayo-saka-liverpool-opinion

This has seen a flurry of new deals across the last two years, with William Saliba, Saka, Martinelli and Martin Odegaard all putting pen to paper on fresh contracts at the club. The North London club aren't done there either, it seems, with reports suggesting that Edu has turned his attention to keeping hold of another one of Arteta's stars.

Arsenal can bench Havertz by unleashing "clinical" £27m star

Arsenal face West Ham United in the Premier League today

ByRoss Kilvington Feb 11, 2024

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal are in advanced talks with Ben White over a new contract in negotiations that have been led by Edu. The centre-back turned right-back has been a central part of a side who are gradually dragging the Gunners back to the summit of English football after years away from the top table. At just 26 years of age too, the former Brighton & Hove Albion man looks set to play a part at The Emirates for years to come, with a fresh deal reportedly close.

White's current deal is set to expire in 2026, handing Arsenal plenty of time to get a new and improved contract over the line in the coming months.

Ben White is a "key player" for Arsenal

It's no surprise that White has often kept his place for Arsenal even as competition from Takehiro Tomiyasu arrived, given the praise of Arteta. The Spaniard previously said:

"He's progressed in the right way in the last few years. He had a difficult start which is normal. It was a big jump with different expectations.

"He showed a lot of determination and courage to overcome that. He has been a key player for us. He's got a big personality, copes with pressure really well and has a lot of quality in different position.

"He's a really good character in the way he is and how he presents himself. He loves football and the way he trains, applies himself and plays the game in a top way."
