Ten Hag must now drop 5/10 Man Utd dud who lost the ball 19x vs Bayern

Back in August when the UEFA Champions League draw occurred, Manchester United fans were thrilled with their Group A placement, with a place in the knockout stages looking extremely achievable. However, fast forward to today, and Erik ten Hag’s side is out of European competition altogether after crashing out in last place last night.

The Red Devils had to win the game versus Bayern Munich yesterday, yet they suffered a 1-0 defeat and showed very little intent to win the game, highlighted by the five attempts at goal, one shot on target, and 0.25 xG.

Fingers should be pointed at the side as a unit rather than individuals, but it is difficult to look past players' who cannot provide any level of consistency – including Diogo Dalot.

Diogo Dalot’s game vs Bayern in numbers

The Portuguese full-back started the evening at right back before moving over to the opposite flank due to Luke Shaw picking up another injury, but he failed to have a positive impact on the game in either role.

Diogo Dalot

Dalot is an interesting player, as he displays glimpses of quality, but that is often overridden by mistakes or underwhelming performances.

That was evident yesterday, with the full-back showing promise going forward via direct, powerful dribbling. He completed 100% of his five dribble attempts, but composure in the final third was missing, registering five failed crosses from five attempts.

Below is an overview of his stats from the game against Bayern.

The stat above, which is particularly poor and frustrating, is that he gave the ball away 19 times, mainly due to complacency. Not only did this prevent United from sustaining pressure and control, but it also stopped attacking scenarios and allowed Bayern to regain possession or launch a quick transition.

The player who could replace Diogo Dalot

After the game, Manchester Evening News writer Samuel Luckhurst gave Dalot a match rating of five out of ten. However, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who played the second half at right back, received a seven, a rightfully higher score than the Portugal international.

The number 29 was strong in attack and defensively, with the ex-Crystal Palace player creating United’s best chance of the game by underlapping Antony and cutting the ball back to the edge of the box before Bruno Fernandes blasted it over the bar. Wan-Bissaka also made two tackles and interceptions, won all three of his duels, and had 100% pass accuracy.

The 26-year-old provides much more balance and defensive control than Dalot, but the latter does outperform him going forward, as shown below.

In truth, the right back spot at Manchester United is up for grabs, with neither Wan-Bissaka or Dalot impressing Ten Hag or the United faithful this season.

A right-back may be on the manager’s wish list in January, but given that the ex-Porto defender has started over double the amount the Englishman has in the Premier League, it is fair to now give Wan-Bissaka a shot at nailing down the position.

Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden set to leave for English club in January

A "brilliant" Newcastle United player is now expected to join a fellow English club in the January transfer window, according to a fresh transfer claim.

Newcastle's January transfer business

The Magpies have been linked with so many players in recent weeks, as Eddie Howe looks to add to his squad and increase his team's chances of changing their fortunes for the better. It has been a tough first half of the season for Newcastle, who have had endless injury problems, but it would be a surprise if some new faces didn't arrive to help make a difference.

For example, in-form VfB Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy is one player who has been backed to move to St James' Park, having taken the Bundesliga by storm this season, scoring 17 times in the competition already. Kalvin Phillips is also a player who continues to be linked with Newcastle, as he looks to move away from Manchester City, and the England international has been seen as someone who can help make up for the loss of Sandro Tonali, whose 10-month ban means he won't be available again until next season. There are defenders who have been tipped to join the Magpies, too, including Goncalo Inacio and Piero Hincapie.

There could be some players who are unwanted at Newcastle, however, and a new update has emerged over an individual whose future looks set to lie away from St James'.

Isaac Hayden to leave Newcastle

According to Football Insider journalist Pete O'Rourke, Isaac Hayden will leave Newcastle in the January window for a new English club, with his loan spell at Standard Liege set to be terminated early.

"Newcastle United are set to terminate Isaac Hayden’s loan spell at Standard Liege next month and find him a new club in January, sources have told Football Insider. He is now set to join a new English club in January after several clubs in the Championship registered their interest in signing the 28-year-old midfielder on loan.

"Hayden joined Standard Liege on a season-long loan deal in the summer transfer window, but he has struggled for form during his temporary stint."

In truth, it makes complete sense for Hayden to join a different club on loan in January, considering he has been limited to only 10 Jupiler Pro League appearances for Liege this season.

The 28-year-old appears to have no future at Newcastle, with so many midfielders ahead of him in the pecking order, but that's not to say that he can't still offer plenty to a side lower down in the Premier League, or perhaps in the Championship. Ian Wright once lauded his ability, hailing his decision-making in clearing a shot off the line:

"Look at Hayden there, he realises [the]’ keeper is out of place and he goes on the line, great stuff; maybe Danny Ings could have hit that with the left foot, but Hayden, brilliant awareness to get himself on the line."

Newcastle likely to hold talks to appoint managerial "legend" next summer

The Magpies are set to make a decision regarding the future of Eddie Howe.

ByChloe Chadwick Dec 30, 2023

Hayden is still contracted to Newcastle until the summer of 2026, but it makes sense to sell him permanently at the end of the season, receiving a fee for his services in the process.

Rilee Rossouw, Farhad Reza combine to trounce Rajshahi Kings

Riders produced another commanding performance to trounce Kings by six wickets with eight balls to spare

The Report by Peter Della Penna29-Jan-2019

Farhad Reza picked up four wickets for Rangpur Riders•Raton Gomes/BCB

How the game played outRangpur Riders picked up where they left off 24 hours earlier, producing another commanding performance to trounce Rajshahi Kings by six wickets with eight balls to spare. Considering the ease with which Riders overhauled a target of 187 set by Dhaka Dynamites on Monday, Kings’ first innings total of 141 was never going to seriously challenge Riders. Kings batsman Laurie Evans admitted as much when he wisecracked that Kings were “about 60 short” when interviewed on TV at the innings break.Sticking to their strategy of stacking their lineup with four big-hitting overseas batsman at the top of the order, Riders coasted to the target behind a half-century from Rilee Rossouw. The South African maintained his status as the tournament’s leading scorer, becoming the first to cross the 500-run mark for BPL 2019 putting him nearly 200 runs clear of his closest challenger Mushfiqur Rahim.By the end of the 13th over, the equation was brought under a run a ball during a 71-run stand between Rossouw and AB de Villiers. A late hiccup by Riders in which Rossouw and de Villiers fell in consecutive overs made the final margin appear closer than the match had been in reality.Turning pointsEvans was on 35 when he drove Shahidul Islam to backward point where a sharp, diving catch was taken by Nahidul Islam. At 81 for 5, Kings had little firepower left to make a recoveryFazle Mahmud and Qais Ahmad fell on consecutive deliveries in the 20th over of Kings innings to Farhad Reza, ending a 40-run partnership and swinging momentum strongly back in favor of Riders heading into the chaseRossouw was dropped on 29 at mid-off by Kamrul Islam Rabbi on a difficult chance on the first ball of the 12th over off Mustafizur Rahman. Rossouw and de Villiers each belted a six in the following over to bring the required run-rate under six with seven overs left as Kings waltzed toward the targetStar of the dayFarhad Reza’s heroics in the field against Dynamites both catching and bowling were overshadowed by a mammoth 186-run partnership between de Villiers and Alex Hales. But Reza showed once again why he’s an unsung hero in the Riders squad by claiming another three wickets against Kings. His day started with the wicket of Johnson Charles skying a slog over midwicket in the third over, then finished by almost claiming a hat-trick in the final over to stifle any hopes of a late surge by Kings. The big missRyan ten Doeschate’s absence from the starting XI due to a side strain robbed Kings of their biggest threat in the middle order to aid in a possible recovery. Three days earlier he struck his first four scoring shots for six on his way to 27 off 12 balls that proved vital in a seven-run win over Chittagong Vikings. The inability of Kings to produce a finishing kick without him against Riders highlighted his value.Where the teams standRiders clinched a playoff spot with the win and moved up into a tie for first place again with Comilla Victorians on 14 points. Rajshahi Kings’ playoff hopes hang by a thread on 10 points in a tie for fourth place with Dhaka Dynamites, but Dynamites have two matches in hand as well as a sizable net-run-rate advantage.

Sheffield Shield team of the year

In a season dominated by the pace bowlers, who makes our Sheffield Shield team of the tournament?

Alex Malcolm01-Apr-2019

Marcus Harris continued his remarkable record in Sheffield Shield finals•Getty Images

Marcus Harris (1188 runs at 69.88)The left-hander became the first man since 2014-15 to register 1000 runs in a Shield season. The feat was even more impressive given the last five matches he played were against the Dukes ball. He scored three centuries and six half-centuries and was incredibly consistent across the season. His third Sheffield Shield final hundred was instrumental in Victoria claiming the title and he finished as the Shield’s leading scorer.Alex Doolan (761 runs at 38.05)The experienced right-hander from Tasmania started the season superbly with a century in seaming conditions at the Gabba. He averaged one run less than New South Wales’ Daniel Hughes and made one less century but he passed 50 seven times in 20 innings and played half those innings on the toughest new-ball batting wicket in the country and deserves recognition because of that consistency. Will Pucovski (649 runs at 54.08)He missed four games before Christmas due to mental health issues but still managed to score 649 runs. He made two centuries and three other scores above 50 in just 13 innings. The highlight was his extraordinary 243 against Western Australia in the first game of the season whilst struggling with his mental health. He was very impressive after the BBL scoring a century against Tasmania, 82 against South Australia and making 51 in the second innings of the final, in a game where only three players passed 50.

Kurtis Patterson (724 runs at 40.22)After going two full years without a Sheffield Shield century Patterson made two this season and added a Test debut and a Test century to his resume. He only averaged 40.22 but he passed 50 six times and was very consistent batting at No. 3 for New South Wales. He got his runs in difficult circumstances, notably an unbeaten century on a Perth Stadium pitch where Jhye Richardson took eight wickets and only three players in the game passed 50. He played very well in the second innings of the Shield final contributing 76 on a surface where most of the batsmen in the game struggled.Matthew Wade (1021 runs at 60.05; capt & wk)No player could do any more than what has been asked of Matthew Wade. Like Harris, he passed the mythical 1000-run mark having done the majority of his batting on a difficult Bellerive pitch. He passed 50 in half of his 20 innings this year. He started the season No. 6 and then moved up to No. 4 after the Australian selectors suggested he was batting too low to be considered for Test cricket and pounded out more runs. Sheffield Shield winners Victoria rated Wade the toughest batsman to bowl to in the competition after he made 137 and 86 against them. He also captained Tasmania for more than half the season and kept wicket in four of the 10 games.Nic Maddinson (563 runs at 80.42)He was not contracted at the start of the season for his new state Victoria after moving from New South Wales and was not selected for the first five Shield games but made the team of the year based off just eight innings, where he scored a staggering 563 runs at 80.42. He made three centuries in his first three games including 162 opening the batting against Western Australia on debut for his new state. He had a shocking run with injury though, breaking his arm in that innings and also breaking his thumb fielding in the last game of the home and away season which saw him miss the final.Michael Neser (481 runs at 43.72; 33 wickets at 23.03)Neser had a stunning all-round year in his first season moving up to No.7. He topped the Queensland batting averages making 481 runs at 43.72, including five half-centuries. Only Joe Burns managed more half-centuries for the Bulls. He also finished second on the Bulls wickets tally with 33 scalps at 23.03 including taking just his second career five-wicket haul against Western Australia in the last round of the season.

Trent Copeland (52 wickets at 18.21)Copeland was a stand-out bowler taking 52 wickets at just 18.21 with three five-wickets hauls. It was a season made even more remarkable by the fact he missed two games, having been left out for one fixture when Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins were available and missing another due to television commentary commitments. He was effective on all types of surfaces but was particularly damaging with the Dukes ball taking 29 wickets after Christmas including 5 for 74 in the first innings of the final.Jackson Bird (50 wickets at 22.22)The Tasmanian seamer was dominant at Bellerive Oval taking 50 wickets for the season. He was the only man in the competition to take four five-wicket hauls and two 10-wicket hauls. He was incredibly durable as well as one of only two fast bowlers to play all 10 home and away games without a rest and he bowled more overs than any other quick bar Copeland. As dominant as he was at home, though, his best performance came away at Adelaide Oval where he took 11 for 112 on a surface where two batsmen passed 150 and Tasmania piled up 467 in their first innings.Scott Boland (48 wickets at 19.66)He was named Sheffield Shield player of the year having been rested in the final round of the season. He took 6 for 49 and 7 for 54 in back-to-back fixtures on a flat MCG surface prior to Christmas and was a key cog in Victoria’s title-winning attack. He was relentless in testing the defensives of batsmen on predominantly flat pitches in Melbourne. He finished with 48 wickets at 19.66 and fittingly took the winning wicket to seal the Shield final.Jon Holland (26 wickets at 28.16)Holland was the stand-out spinner in the competition, but the fact that he finished tied 14th on the Sheffield Shield wicket-taking tally suggests it was a year where surfaces were far more pace and seam friendly. He only played eight of Victoria’s 11 games missing three prior to Christmas as Fawad Ahmed’s leg-spin was preferred, but he was an important contributor after the BBL. He took a vital 5 for 72 against Queensland to give Victoria the opportunity to chase 300 on the final day and also bagged 5 for 31 against New South Wales to set up a win that secured Victoria a home final.

Arsenal can sign White upgrade in "one of the best wing-backs in Europe"

The Premier League winter break could not have come at a better time for Arsenal this season, as despite spending Christmas Day in first place, losses to West Ham United and Fulham have seen them drop down to fourth.

Worse yet, their defeat to Liverpool last week also saw them ejected from the FA Cup in the third round, and while the attack's inability to finish their chances has taken most of the blame, there is another area of the team that hasn't reached the same highs of last year – right-back.

Ben White was spectacular for the Gunners last season, but so far this term, he has been underwhelming, and with the latest piece of transfer news, his place in the team could now be under threat, as the north Londoners have been linked with Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong.

Arsenal transfer news – Jeremie Frimpong

According to a report last week from the German publication BILD, Arsenal are interested in and currently 'chasing' Leverkusen's exciting young full-back, Frimpong.

The report also reveals that he will be allowed to leave the Bundesliga outfit in 2024 for a 'fixed' fee of €40m, which is about £34m.

Jeremie Frimpong slides for the ball as Bayer Leverkusen play AS Monaco in the Europa League.

While the fee is very much attainable for Arsenal, the much more significant barrier to them completing this deal is the reported interest of Manchester United. However, it does seem that the Gunners are leading this particular race at the moment.

While the relatively modest fee will come as music to the ears of Arsenal's higher-ups, it might just make White sweat if his performances don't improve.

Jeremie Frimpong could be the perfect upgrade for Ben White

As mentioned earlier, White was an instrumental part of Arsenal's impressive title charge last season, so while he has been well below par this season, there is still clearly a talented player in there.

That said, compared to Frimpong, whom talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed "one of the best wing-backs in Europe", things don't look great for the Englishman's position at the club.

Arsenal can sign perfect Saliba partner in "rock-soild" ace who idolised Henry

The 26-year-old could help Arsenal end their title drought.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Jan 9, 2024

The first thing to note is that at the halfway point of the season, the former Brighton & Hove Albion man has just a single goal and one assist to his name in the league.

In contrast, the young Dutchman has scored five goals and notched up six assists in just 16 league starts – and he was just as deadly last season.

The case for the former Celtic prospect grows even more substantial when comparing their underlying numbers.

In almost all attacking metrics aside from progressive passing, the Leverkusen star has his potential new teammate beaten. He creates a significantly higher non-penalty expected goals and assists figure, hits the target more often and produces over twice as many goal-creating actions per 90.

The young dynamo even completes more ball recoveries than White, and while he wins fewer tackles per 90, it is not by very much, and if U23 scout Antonio Mango's assessment that Frimpong "has no ceiling", then he could even surpass the Englishman in the defensive side of the game.

Ultimately, for a fee of £34m, Edu and Co should be going all out to get this deal over the line, and who knows, it could be the catalyst to get White back to his very best as well.
