Warwickshire emphatically reasserted themselves at the top of the Division Two

ScorecardWarwickshire emphatically reasserted themselves at the top of the Specsavers County Championship Division Two by crushing Gloucestershire by an innings and 47 runs inside two days at Edgbaston.Gloucestershire’s batting folded pitifully for the second time in successive days as they followed their first innings 127 with 103 all out.The home seam-attack, led by Ryan Sidebottom with 4 for 42, ruthlessly exploited some feckless batting to fully exploit a dominant position earned by the skilful work of opening batsman Will Rhodes. He struck 137 from 233 balls with 16 fours, a superb innings spanning five and a half hours in overcast, seamer-friendly conditions, to lift Warwickshire to 277.His third Championship century of the season underpinned an important win for the Division Two leaders. Defeat to Middlesex at Lord’s in their previous match had allowed the pursuers to close in, but this two-day win put the chasing pack back under pressure.Following a dreadful all-round performance on the first day, Gloucestershire were at least much improved with the ball on the second and took four wickets in the morning session. After Warwickshire resumed on 170 for 2, Craig Miles dismissed Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott in five balls. It was fine bowling as the 24-year-old jagged one back in to knock out Bell’s off and middle stumps then moved one away to find Trott outside-edge.Rhodes’s application was faultless but partners came and went. Sam Hain started with two sumptuous drives but reached only before lifting Chris Liddle to point. Tim Ambrose sliced Miles to first slip before Rhodes was finally uprooted, bowled on the charge by spinner George Drissell.Jeetan Patel was bowled by Matt Taylor then Miles completed his 12th first-class five-for by taking a return catch from Olly Hannon-Dalby and having Sidebottom caught in the gully next ball. He finished with 5 for 69.Gloucestershire’s second innings was soon damaged when Miles Hammond cut Sidebottom to gully. It then lurched from 27 for 1 to 27 for 4 as three wickets fell in nine balls. Chris Dent edged Sidebottom to second slip before Keith Barker had James Bracey caught behind and induced Gareth Roderick to play on.Ryan Higgins edged Sidebottom behind and debutant Ben Charlesworth, having played correctly for five from 31 balls, edged Hannon-Daly to second slip just before tea.Just before tea, Benny Howell had his off-stump flattened by Chris Wright and the end came quickly in the final session as Sidebottom bowled Miles, Matt Taylor hoiked Wright to long leg and Drissell edged Rhodes to second slip.

Spurs could sign "rapid" van de Ven replacement for just £25m in January

Tottenham could sign a "rapid" centre-back target for just £25 million in January, with a fee in and around that figure "too good to turn down".

Postecoglou's problems at Spurs

On Saturday, the north Londoners succumbed to a 2-1 defeat away to Wolves and their second Premier League league loss on the spin – a scenario scarcely imagined just two weeks ago. Ange Postecoglou had made the best start by any new manager in the division's history, but a series of killer injury blows have now crippled Spurs' squad.

Star defender Micky van de Ven and playmaker James Maddison, who have both performed incredibly since arriving in the summer transfer window, won't be seen in a Lilywhites jersey again until 2024. Eric Dier and Ben Davies were the nominees to fill in for both van de Ven and Cristian Romero (suspended) against Wolves, with both struggling in parts, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg played a more advanced midfield role in Maddison's stead.

“We started well but we could have been a little bit more positive, a little bit more aggressive, particularly with the ball,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham's loss to Wolves.

“I have got to temper that with the fact we’ve made so many changes and we’re not going to get the same sort of fluency when three of your back four are virtually starting for the first time [this season].

“We’ve made a couple of changes further up as well so it’s not going to be as fluid but we could have been more positive.”

The long list of absentees has exposed Tottenham's glaring lack of options behind their starting eleven, and reports have suggested that sporting director Johan Lange wants to sign a new centre-back in January to make up the numbers. Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly is a target for Spurs in that regard, while Everton's Ben Godfrey is also liked by Tottenham.

Spurs could sign Kelly for just £25 million

Postecoglou's side quite simply need to sign an alternative to van de Ven in the winter window, as the Dutchman's pace and comfort in a high line is crucial to the way Tottenham play.

A pacy replacement for the 22-year-old would be ideal, with Football Insider reporter Pete O'Rourke claiming Tottenham could sign Kelly for just £25 million.

Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

The Cherries defender has a contract expiring at the end of the season, meaning Bournemouth aren't in a position to demand marquee figures. Indeed, it is believed Kelly's club would find a fee of around £25-£30m "too good to turn down".

The Englishman has been revered for his speed by members of the press, with Sky Sports reporter Jamie Weir also saying Kelly is adept at playing a high line.

"Find the ignorance/snobbery over Lloyd Kelly fairly odd," said Weir in September.

"Lots of comments asking who he is. He’s 24, a rapid left-footed CB, comfortable playing a high line, homegrown and has leadership qualities, having captained Bournemouth for a year."

All the signs suggest he could come as a brilliant second option to partner Romero at the back, not to mention a very affordable one.

Ravindra Jadeja's all-round entertainment highlights India's dominance

Kohli brought up yet another hundred, Pant dominated a beaten and bruised attack, and Jadeja walloped a maiden Test ton before West Indies’ top order crumbled in the heat of Rajkot

The Report by Sidharth Monga05-Oct-2018
2:29

Walsh: Kohli’s hunger for ‘every Test run’ amazing

It was like an afternoon stroll on a warm winter’s day. By the end of it, Virat Kohli had notched up another inevitable-looking hundred, Ravindra Jadeja had entertained his home crowd with a maiden hundred, a run-out where he walked from mid-on and threw the stumps down as if playing marbles, and a wicket off his first ball, Rishabh Pant had attacked his way to 92, India had registered their highest total against West Indies, and the visitors ended the day 555 behind with four first-innings wickets in hand. It seemed so easy you would be forgiven for forgetting they were actually playing in dry, 40-degree heat. The availability of loose balls and defensive fields meant the India batsmen had to barely break a sweat when they resumed play on the second day at 364 for 4. Sherman Lewis bothering Pant with the short ball for about one over, and Keemo Paul beating his bat as a result of that, was the most competitive period of play in this Test. With nearly 400 on the board, Pant kept playing his shots, and when they come off they looked amazing. The flick off the pads was the most productive against pace, and once West Indies went back to spin, Pant was all over them. Over midwicket, over mid-on, taking on long-off at the boundary. At one point, Pant threatened to beat Kohli to the century despite starting the day 55 behind. Eventually, there was one shot too many, as he failed to pick a Devendra Bisho googly and edged a hoick. There was no such uncertainty around Kohli’s hundred. It seemed like batting practice for him. He was hardly challenged by the bowling and the conditions. It was like a session where a batsman is trying to reinforce the basics in the nets. Leave wide balls alone; drive if it is too full; if it is a touch straight, close the bat face late. He ran hard. There were enough bad balls in between for him to not need to take any risks to put the bowlers under pressure. His century was his 24th, taking him past Virender Sehwag on the list of India’s most prolific centurions, and placing him behind only Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. When he off-drove the first ball he faced post lunch for only his eighth boundary, Kohli crossed 1000 runs for the third year in a row. He began to take risks now. Having survived a return catch before lunch, he picked a wrong’un and smacked it over midwicket for four. He began to walk down against pace, eventually getting a leading edge that ended his innings.Jadeja had by then established himself at the wicket, having added 64 with Kohli. As wickets fell at the other end, finally giving Bishoo some reward for his unremarkable toil that gave him 4 for 217 – the second-most expensive figures for West Indies, Jadeja grew adventurous. The half-century was uneventful, his sword-wielding promising that he had something special planned to celebrate a hundred. Thanks to their run rate, India had a lot of time to allow Jadeja a shot at the landmark, but they had lost eight wickets by then. However, Jadeja found support from Umesh Yadav as they added 55 for the ninth wicket. Jadeja showed the urgency required, hitting the second ball he faced after his fifty for a six back over Bishoo’s head. That was the first of his five sixes. He went from 50 to 98 in 34 balls despite refusing singles when batting with the No. 11 Mohammed Shami. That West Indies were a beaten lot showed in their captaincy. The first ball Shami faced was the 25th of the 10th-wicket partnership. The field didn’t change at all at the end of the overs, allowing Jadeja to take the single and retain the strike. Shami kept his end of the bargain, allowing Jadeja to get to the hundred. The celebration, it turned out, was joyous, involving a long look at the heavens above, but he didn’t add any variant to his sword dance. As India took the field, a seemingly flat pitch suddenly became venomous. Before he walked off clutching his side, Shami had removed the openers in a four-over opening spell. He bowled with a beautiful seam position, attacked the stumps, and benefited from the skiddy bounce he gets. R Ashwin soon got into the act, dismissing Shai Hope with an offbreak that didn’t turn. With the ball still new, and his seam parallel to the ground, it wasn’t entirely unintentional.Sunil Ambris and Shimron Hetmeyer went on to self-destruct. Hetmeyer and Ambris ended up at the striker’s end after Hetmeyer hit a shot a touch too well to Jadeja at mid-on. Jadeja teased him by walking slowly to the stumps and then throwing the ball on top of them. Ambris was teased by a flighted ball first up, which he looked to hit over mid-off but edged to slip. Shane Dowrich then tried to hit a big shot off Kuldeep Yadav, presenting him with a gate to burst through. Six wickets in 29 overs.

Jonny Bairstow mustn't 'rush back' from injury, says Matt Prior

Former England keeper Matt Prior says Ben Foakes’ emergence on debut has created a “nightmare” for the selectors

George Dobell in Galle07-Nov-2018Matt Prior, the former England wicketkeeper, has urged Jonny Bairstow not to attempt to return too early from his ankle injury.Bairstow sustained the injury during the limited-overs section of England’s tour and had to watch on as Ben Foakes was called into the side and made a brilliant start to his Test career. Not only did Foakes become only the second England wicketkeeper to make a century on Test debut – Prior was the first – but he equalled a Test record by claiming a dismissal with just his second delivery in the field. He was also the first England wicketkeeper to score a Test century in Asia. All that has left Bairstow facing the possibility that he may struggle to regain his preferred place behind the stumps. But while Prior understands Bairstow’s enthusiasm to return, he has cautioned him against trying to do so too early.”You don’t want to rush back from the injury he has,” Prior said. “I’ve mentioned this to Jonny. It can just create a lot more hassle.”It’s not so much the forward and back and linear movement that will be an issue for him, it’s going to be the sideways movement that’s going to be an issue.”If you try and keep wicket over here, in these conditions that are very, very physically demanding, half-injured or with a slight injury, you’re going to under-perform. You’re not just going to let yourself down; you’re going to let the team down as well.”Prior knows all too well the dangers of trying to play while injured. In the final matches of his Test career, he attempted to play through an Achilles problem that not only compromised his performance, but worsened the injury and hastened his retirement.”I’ve learned from experience and unfortunately I couldn’t come back from it,” Prior said. “There is the bravado of ‘Oh, I’m playing for my country, they’re going to have to wheel me off’.”But it doesn’t get you very far, quite frankly. You’d rather go away, give yourself that extra week to come back fully fit so that you can perform at 100%. Not only for yourself, but for your team.”Jonny Bairstow was back in training after an ankle injury•Getty Images

But Prior, who witnessed Foakes equal his record as he is in Galle as part of the Talksport 2 commentary team, did suggest that “it would be harsh” to leave out Bairstow if he is fully fit.”We’re very quick to forget Jonny has been one of England’s standout performers over the last couple of years,” Prior said. “He’s a phenomenal talent and I don’t think we want to look a gift horse in the mouth. Jonny, fully fit, would have played this Test match, probably would have performed well, done well with the gloves and scored runs and we wouldn’t be having this conversation. I think it would be harsh not to pick him.”You want to remember what a good player Jonny Bairstow is. If he is fully fit, then he should come back in to the team. Whether he keeps wicket, that’s a whole other conversation. Who knows? That will be based on the balance of the team.”The selectors have given themselves a nightmare by bringing Foakes over here in the first place. How are we going to play, potentially, Bairstow, [Jos] Buttler and Foakes in the next Test? I haven’t worked it out yet. The only thing I can come up with is if Ben Stokes then moves up to three, you have Joe Root at four and Bairstow, Buttler, Foakes, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran. That’s quite a batting line-up.”You’ve got to pick the team that’s going to win you a Test match on any given day. That’s how you have to go about your selection, otherwise you can get too emotional about it. If it’s deemed that actually Ben Foakes isn’t in that XI that’s going to win in Kandy then you have to make that tough call. It is going to be a selectors’ nightmare.”

Spurs could land their next Bale in "flamboyant" £21m sensation

Much will be made of Tottenham Hotspur's recent blip – having lost each of their last two Premier League games – yet the fact remains that Ange Postecoglou's side are still just two points behind leaders Manchester City heading into the international break.

Following the doom and gloom of last term – with both Cristian Stellini and Antonio Conte having been shown the door – the future now appears far brighter for those at N17, even with star striker Harry Kane having moved on to pastures new over the summer.

In the Englishman's absence, the Lilywhites have been spearheaded by long-serving sensation, Heung-min Son, the South Korean forward scoring eight league goals thus far after already forming a devastating partnership with summer signing, James Maddison – who boasts five assists already in 2023/24.

Cruelly, the latter man – and teammate Micky van de Ven – are now set to be out until the New Year with injury, while recent games have also seen Postecoglou's ranks depleted by the dismissals of Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou

Those woes have thus far exposed a real lack of depth in the Spurs ranks, with the previously outcast Eric Dier forced to start against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out, with new recruits seemingly needed across the park heading into the January window.

Tottenham transfer targets

Having already secured Pedro Porro from Portuguese side, Sporting CP earlier this year, the north Londoners could well return to Lisbon in order to snap up the likes of Marcus Edwards and Pedro Goncalves, with the pair both reportedly of interest to Daniel Levy and co.

Equally, one eye-catching report that has emerged over the past week is the Premier League side's apparent interest in promising England youngster, Samuel Iling-Junior, with the 20-year-old currently catching the eye at Serie A side, Juventus.

Samuel Iling Junior in action for Juventus.

As per the Independent's Miguel Delaney, Tottenham are 'looking at' the emerging talent amid the need to add further depth to their attacking ranks, in particular, with the young wideman also providing the benefit of being able to feature in the centre of the park if required.

The former Chelsea youth asset – who left Stamford Bridge back in 2020 – does have a contract until 2025 with the Old Lady, although Delaney indicated that Spurs' strong relationship with the Serie A side could pay dividends, having signed the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur in recent times.

The piece also noted that Iling-Junior would fit with the club's model of signing up-and-coming talent, with 21-year-old, Destiny Udogie, for instance, having been snapped up from another Italian outfit – Udinese – in the summer of 2022, prior to belatedly moving to England this summer.

Bringing the Juve man into the fold alongside the likes of Udogie, Pape Matar Sarr and Brennan Johnson would be an exciting prospect indeed, with such a deal certainly one to look out for in 2024.

Samuel Iling-Junior's style of play

As a left-footed asset who can operate as a wing-back or a more attack-minded role, Iling-Junior has perhaps unsurprisingly earned comparisons to Bayern Munich speedster, Alphonso Davies, as per talent scout Jacek Kulig, yet the likeness could perhaps just as easily be made between himself and a legend of Spurs folklore, Gareth Bale, with the now-retired superstar beginning life at left-back before transitioning into a devastating wing wizard.

gareth-bale-tottenham-hotspur-spurs-transfer-heung-min-son-postecoglou-pochettino

Described as a "flamboyant winger" and noted for his "pace", "acceleration" and "athleticism" – as per Kulig – it is clear to see that Iling-Junior has the physical traits to be a possible heir to Bale in north London, with the Welshman also hailed for his "frightening" speed by Real Madrid legend, Zinedine Zidane, prior to moving to the Bernabeu a decade ago.

That likeness can also be seen in a description of the Juventus starlet's talents by Eurosport's Michele Neri, who recently stated: “Iling Junior is a very quick player, who loves to take on opposing full-backs and attack the vertical spaces, in a very direct way.

"He is a left winger who can also play as a right winger if needed. He has a great sense for dribbling and a speed from a standing start that other Juventus players do not have."

Those of a Tottenham persuasion don't need reminding of Bale's ability to offer a 'direct' threat from either flank, with the Cardiff native memorably scoring that hat-trick against Inter Milan in the Champions League back in 2010.

Like the former Spurs star, however, Postecoglou's winter target is no mere headless chicken as he has the quality to match when in possession, having been hailed as an "assist machine" by Neri for his quality service from the flanks.

While still in the infancy of his senior career, the England U21 international has chalked up one goal and three assists in 22 games for his current side to date, including registering one assist from just four league appearances in 2023/24.

The signs are that Iling-Junior could have a bright future in the game and under the watchful eye of Postecoglou, he could well seek to mirror Bale's rise to stardom in Lilywhite.

Gareth Bale's statistics at Tottenham

Like Iling-Junior – who could command a fee of around £21m – Bale was snapped up as a player of potential rather than undoubted quality when signing from Southampton as a teenager back in 2007, with Levy forking out roughly £10m on the eye-catching full-back.

Despite a rocky start to life in the capital, amid a dismal run of 24 Premier League games without a win, the towering athlete eventually cemented himself as a key figure at White Hart Lane, while catching the eye of those further afield following that night at San Siro.

A "unique" talent when at his best, as lauded by Zidane, Bale ultimately departed in the summer of 2013 after having scored 21 goals and contributed eight assists in just 33 league games in his final season at N17.

Having later returned for a second spell on loan in 2020, the goalscoring machine's overall record for the club stands at 72 goals and 58 assists in just 236 games in all competitions, proving that not only was he a clinical figure in front of goal himself, but also something of an 'assist machine' in his own right.

Attempting to emulate such heroics is no easy task, yet the stylistic similarities between Bale and Iling-Junior should have pulses racing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, if a deal can be agreed in 2024.
