'I want to stay involved with Netherlands' – ten Doeschate

Essex captain remains committed to his Netherlands return and has called for greater opportunities for the Associate nations

Andrew Miller05-Apr-2018Ryan ten Doeschate says that he remains committed to his return to international cricket with the Netherlands – in spite of their failure to qualify for the 2019 World Cup – because the standard of Associate cricket is unrecognisable from the levels it was at when he walked away from selection in 2011.Ten Doeschate, who will lead Essex’s defence of the County Championship title when their first game gets underway at Headingley next week, recently returned from the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe. Although he signed off from the tournament with an unbeaten 67 not out in a rain-affected loss against West Indies, Netherlands failed to progress from the group stages following earlier defeats against Ireland and UAE.Despite that disappointment, however, ten Doeschate said that, subject to availability, his appetite had been whetted for further international campaigns. His initial return to the fray had come in a two-match outing against Namibia in the UAE last November, when the cancellation of South Africa’s Global T20 league provided him with a rare window of opportunity. And having encountered a team whose standards have been transformed since the 2011 World Cup, he is eager to stay involved after his six-year hiatus.”I had a great time in Dubai, the team has changed so much, and the standard of Associate cricket has improved so much,” ten Doeschate told ESPNcricinfo. “I can’t explain how different it is to six years ago, and of course there was the big carrot of qualifying for another World Cup.”I was asked to go along but it didn’t work out, it was a very tough competition, but the Dutch team, and Associate cricket in general, is moving in the right direction and it’s something I want to be a part of again.”In keeping with the sentiments expressed by many of the tournament’s leading players, including Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza and Ireland’s Will Porterfield, ten Doeschate criticised the ICC’s decision to reduce the 2019 World Cup to a ten-team affair. However, he did concede that he could understand how the decision might have been reached back in 2011, when momentous Associate triumphs – such as Ireland’s World Cup victory over England at Bangalore – were still a rarity at the highest level.”Six years ago, those moments of euphoria were few and far between, but it’s my suggestion now that you won’t have the massive gulf between Associates and Test nations, which is why it’s time to look at it again.”Despite West Indies’ achievement in coming through the Qualifier to secure their World Cup place alongside Afghanistan, ten Doeschate said that the fact they were made to work so hard throughout the tournament was a testament to those transformed standards.”It was a great competition and probably the stand-out thing for me was that you didn’t see the West Indies piling into a lot of teams,” he said. “Six years ago, you would have had a lot of cases where they’d have got 350 and the Associate team would have been bowled out for 120-30. That wasn’t the case, and personally I felt some of our toughest games were against the Associates. Maybe it’s time to see if we can fit in more Associate games with the Test nations.”You saw the emotion from the Zimbabwe, Ireland and Scottish guys. They spoke well about their ambitions and how it felt not to go to the World Cup. It’s time to look at the difference in standards and how it’s been closed, and see how serious we are as a cricket community about growing the game and what concessions we can make to get more teams and players involved.”The concern now, of course, is that the reduction of places at the elite events will reduce the incentives for the Associate nations to keep improving their standards. Ten Doeschate, however, doesn’t believe that that will necessarily be the case.”It would make sense that the [gap will grow] but credit to the Associate teams for how they’ve closed the gap in the last five or six years,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be that way. Judging from what I saw in Zimbabwe, don’t expect the Associate teams not to try as hard as they’ve been trying, and not to keep improving.”It needs a good relook. Let’s take a step back and really assess what we have decided as a cricket communty and see if we can change that.”

Howe dealt injury blow as update drops on Newcastle star’s timescale

Trying to balance European football with Premier League action, alongside cup football, can be difficult for any club at the best of times, and that's why Newcastle United spent money on adding to their squad in the summer. Yet, even after those additions, they have suffered the inevitable blow of injuries to key players.

So far this season, the Magpies have already been forced to cope without Fabian Schar for a period of time and still remain without Joe Willock. With the fixtures starting to come thick and fast, too, the last thing Eddie Howe would have wanted is another injury blow, which makes the latest update all the more frustrating.

What's the latest Newcastle injury news?

With games against Burnley and Paris Saint-Germain coming up, Howe would have wanted a full squad at his disposal, especially when welcoming the French champions to St James' Park. The former Bournemouth boss will have to deal with the hand he has been dealt, however, with Willock still out, and a fresh injury update regarding Harvey Barnes not exactly brimming with positivity.

Howe confirmed the news of the winger's injury, saying, via Fabrizio Romano: "He's going to be out for around three months. No surgery required which is good news but his foot is now in a boot. It's an injury underneath his toe."

With that said, Newcastle must now hope that the likes of Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak avoid any injuries of their own, which would leave the Magpies' attack fairly blunt. It's a major blow for Barnes, meanwhile, given that he was just getting his St James' Park career going, having made the move from Leicester City in the summer.

When he returns, the winger could dive straight into some important fixtures, however, with Newcastle potentially competing in the Champions League knockout stage.

How has Harvey Barnes performed this season?

federico-chiesa-harvey-barnes-newcastle-opinion

Prior to his injury, it's fair to say that Barnes was finding his feet at Newcastle, scoring once and assisting once in seven appearances in all competitions. The winger's mixed start, combined with a major injury blow, will worry those at St James' Park, who will hope to see his best form when he returns from the sidelines.

At his best, Barnes has earned deserved praise, including from Alan Hutton, who told Football Insider: "Harvey Barnes is an excellent player, he has got that raw pace, he can score goals, he can assist. He had a little dip in form but you see him coming back. He is a live wire and I think that is what Newcastle like, these players that can get the fans off their seats.

"The likes of [Miguel] Almiron, Callum Wilson, [Alexander] Isak, they are all intelligent players that want to run forward and he does that."

With that said, it's clear that Newcastle have a player capable of changing a game for them when at his best. The Magpies will just hope that, once Barnes is back from injury, he returns in top form.

"Get him" – Agbonlahor says Arsenal "need" to sign "blistering" star

Arsenal have been told by Gabriel Agbonlahor that one star with "blistering pace" would suit manager Mikel Arteta "perfectly".

Who will Arsenal sign in January?

The Gunners sit joint-top with north London rivals Tottenham right now, as both sides have secured a brilliant six wins from a possible eight and remain unbeaten. Arsenal also made quite the statement last Sunday, beating last season's treble-winners Man City courtesy of a late, heavily-deflected effort from super sub Gabriel Martinelli. Arteta's side scrapped for a vital three points while also dealing a blow to their sure-to-be title rivals.

"It certainly sends a message to the team, that they keep believing in what they are doing," is what Arteta said after Arsenal's win over Man City.

"They are a fantastic group of players. Today I am proud. The players are all dancing and super happy. The mood is so happy. I just sense everybody will take the next game against Chelsea away (on Oct. 21) with the right emotion. A great feeling, you could sense, it has been so many years without beating them. We beat the best team in the world and in a great way. There were some moments we had to suffer."

Arsenal have been helped by their new incomings this year, specifically a couple. They spent over £200 million in the summer transfer window, with the likes of Declan Rice and David Raya becoming first team mainstays. Germany international Kai Havertz could slowly be getting into his groove as well after some early-season criticism.

However, despite this, the latest Arsenal transfer rumours indicate they wish to strengthen in key areas for the January transfer window. Indeed, Brentford star Ivan Toney is a reported target going forward, while Wolves winger Pedro Neto is of interest for the attacking areas as well.

Is Pedro Neto going to Arsenal?

The Portuguese has starred under Wolves manager Gary O'Neill so far this season, scoring a goal and assisting five others in his eight league appearances so far. Neto has admirers from north London as a result, with recent Arsenal transfer news claiming they want to sign him for Arteta in 2024.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, who regularly features on talkSPORT, has told Football Insider that Neto would be perfect Arsenal – especially with his "blistering" final third pace. Here's what's been said about Neto:

“They need proper backup for Saka and Martinelli. Trossard, Vieira and Smith Rowe – these are all good players, but there’s no one with that blistering pace. Neto has shown that. He’s had a tough two years with injury, but he’s got that. He would suit Arsenal perfectly if they could get him in.”

Journalist Charles Watts also said to Inside Arsenal last week that Neto he would be an ideal addition in north London:

"He looks electric, he’s scoring goals, his pace looks spot on. He really surprised me, he looks so sharp, so quick. He’s the perfect age for Arsenal, all the talent in the world. Would I take Neto? Absolutely, he also grew up watching Arsenal, maybe that will help."

James Hildreth, Dom Bess set up Somerset victory push

Hashim Amla and James Vince carried Hampshire’s hopes of staving off defeat after Somerset piled up a huge first-innings advantage

Paul Edwards at Taunton13-May-20182:11

County round-up: Red-hot Henry too much for Sussex

ScorecardWhen you need to bat over eight hours for a draw it is useful to have a Test triple-centurion in your ranks. Such a quest will also be assisted by the presence of a batsman notorious for making flower-show forties who now needs to prove to the selectors that he is worth keeping in the national side. Perhaps, therefore, the crowd at Taunton might have expected that Hampshire’s resistance on the third evening of this game would be led by Hashim Amla and James Vince.By close of play both Amla and Vince had made good fifties but they will be aware that their work here is not done. Having conceded a first-innings lead of 275, Hampshire must bat for most of Monday to secure the draw that would deny Somerset the leadership of Division One. Amla and Vince have so far added an unbroken 139 and their efforts were particularly necessary given that neither of their openers had exhibited the basic application required by an attritional cricket.Jimmy Adams’ attempt to cut Lewis Gregory only edged a catch to Steven Davies and the game plumbed sad ineptitude when Joe Weatherley pulled Tim Groenewald straight to George Bartlett at deepish square leg. The fielder had been precisely and obviously positioned only the ball previously and Weatherley stood aghast before walking off. Many spectators were less reticent.Vince and Amla eschewed such foolishness. Having seen Craig Overton drop a tough chance in the gully off Groenewald when he was only 8, the Hampshire captain played few cover drives of any sort, let alone the loose efforts which often brought his downfall in the winter’s Ashes. For his part Amla resisted the temptation to play across the line to the offspin of Dom Bess, instead relying on careful accumulation. The cricket in the final session was as tightly contested as the domestic game can offer and it augurs well for the final day of this game. The tempo was also in the sharpest of contrasts to that in a morning session, when Somerset plundered 151 runs in just less than 33 overs. They lost Jack Leach in the third over of the day and James Hildreth to what became the last ball before the break. By then, though, Hildreth had 184 runs to his name and his indiscretion in smearing Tom Alsop’s filthy full toss to mid-on was easily forgiven. He had put on 145 with Bess, which is a ninth-wicket record for matches between these counties. As for Somerset’s No. 10, he had batted like a No. 6 and Hampshire could view Bess’s arrival eighth wicket down as a joke in terrible taste. Rather than poking a few singles in support of Hildreth, he hit 16 fours and was eight runs away from his maiden Somerset century when he lost his off stump to a good ball from Gareth Berg. That gave the bowler his fifth wicket and it was the only solace Vince’s players could take from their brutal mauling as Tom Abell’s men sought to break their opponents on the wheel.Yet all this suffering took place next door to paradise. The hills cradling Taunton were a chequered tablecloth of abundance and the trees in St James’ churchyard threshed softly as the cricketers went about their business. Rarely can slaughter have had such a picturesque backdrop.Yes, perhaps it was easy to become giddy on the third morning of this game. Coleridge would certainly have been in transports. Yet giddiness is exactly what Abell and his players must avoid if they are get to the top of the table and then stay there. Hildreth made that point on Saturday and it may be even more valid on Monday evening. They held the annual church service on Gimblett Hill before play on Sunday and one wonders if any devotions tended to the secular. They will certainly be praying for a few wickets tomorrow.

Adams' gritty ton builds on Steyn's landmark

Dale Steyn registered his first five-wicket haul for near;ly two years and then left it to Jimmy Adams to advance Hampshire’s advantage

ECB Reporters Network21-Jun-2018

ScorecardJimmy Adams battled to his first Specsavers County Championship century for almost a year as Hampshire fought back into a strong position against Yorkshire.Veteran left handed opener Adams was forced to rebuild after quick wickets with a gritty and sensible ton.His runs backed up Dale Steyn’s first five wicket haul since August 2016 as Yorkshire were bowled out for 350 – their highest total of the season.Adams, who is considering retiring at the end of the season, hadn’t reached three figures in the Championship since a 144 against Surrey last July – but never looked in danger against the pink ball.Opening partner Joe Weatherley fell in just the fourth over when he was lbw to Jack Brooks – a delivery which nipped back late and would have gone on to hit the right hander’s off-stump.James Vince had destroyed Yorkshire’s bowling in an outrageous 171 earlier in the week in his side’s Royal London One-Day Cup semi-final victory. But despite a glimpse at his exceptional shot making, in a 54-run stand with Adams, the Hampshire captain was castled by a Brooks with the fourth ball after the tea interval. An over later Sam Northeast, on his first Championship innings since fracturing a finger in his hand, stroked a delicious straight drive down the ground, before he had his middle stump uprooted by Steven Patterson. That brought Alsop to the crease and saw a rear-guard and hard-working stand with Adams.Adams reached fifty in 96 balls, moved to with a forceful cut, as he was quick to punish anything off line.Meanwhile, Alsop was taking his chance having been handed the wicket-keeping gloves from Lewis McManus for this match by starting a marathon – which saw his pass 50 in a glacial 151 deliveries.Adams then reach three figures with another cut backward of square from his 182nd ball.He ended the day unbeaten on 132, with Alsop on 62, having shared a 177 for the unbroken fourth wicket.Earlier, Hampshire wrapped up the Yorkshire tail – although the visitors managed to grab a fourth bonus point for the first time this season. The hosts had looked set to wrap things up quickly as Tim Bresnan and Brooks both fell within the first three overs of the day.Bresnan was bowled by a Fidel Edwards yorker, before Brooks followed him back when he edged Steyn to Ollie Rayner at second slip. The Brooks scalp handed Steyn a deserved five wicket haul, as his fitness ahead of South Africa’s Test series with Sri Lanka next month continued to move in the right decision. The fast bowler ended with figures of 5 for 66 from his epic 29 overs – his first five-for since the Centurion Test against New Zealand nearly two years ago.Captain Patterson guided his side to an additional bonus point, taking them to four with the bat, with 37 runs, before Kyle Abbott celebrated his first wicket since early May when he had Patterson caught scooping to mid-off.

Sunderland: Mowbray could replace Dan Neil with "monstrous" talent

Sunderland made a surprising charge into the play-offs last season following their promotion from League One and a similar narrative is unfolding this time.

With six victories from their opening 11 matches, the Black Cats are purring at the prospect of promotion, although north east rivals Middlesbrough did hand them a 4-0 stuffing last time out.

A humiliating defeat against a rival is undoubtedly a bitter pill to swallow, but the biggest disappointment was the red card brandished to Dan Neil in the first half, handing Boro the initiative in the contest.

Ahead of their trip to Stoke, Tony Mowbray will be without the suspended midfielder and that has dealt them a significant blow.

How has Dan Neil performed this season?

Neil is the enforcer in Sunderland's midfield and has demonstrated that through his abundance of technical attributes, demanding the ball from his defence and spraying passes short and long.

A forward-thinker in possession and a key cog in Mowbray's fast-paced attacking football, there aren't many others, if any, who can dictate the tempo of a match quite like him in the division.

Dan Neil and Abdoullah Ba of Sunderland.

According to FBref, Neil is one of the best deep-lying playmakers in the Championship this term, ranking in the top 1% against his positional peers for progressive passes, top 4% for passes into the final third, top 11% for pass completion and top 25% for assists.

As demonstrated by the above statistics, the 21-year-old is in the upper echelon of players who take a risk in possession, rarely going for a simple pass to ensure that every action he makes is done with a purpose.

Compared to Michael Carrick by talkSPORT's Neil Danter for how he dictates a football previously, there are other parts to Neil's game that don't go unnoticed, and his exceptional ball-carrying is one of them.

He places within the 4% for successful take-ons, the top 16% for progressive carries and the top 13% for carries into the final third.

Praised by former Black Cats ace Stephen Elliott for "having everything you'd want in a central midfielder", Neil has also showcased that his importance stands up against his Sunderland peers.

His average Sofascore rating of 7.23 is the fourth highest in the Mowbrays squad this season, behind only Pierre Ekwah, Bradley Dack and Jack Clarke, the former of which could be in line to replace him against Stoke after recovering from his injury.

Will Ekwah feature against Stoke?

Since Ekwah sustained an injury in the 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers in September, Sunderland have missed the Frenchman's robust and aggressive nature of his performances in midfield.

Fortunately, he is in contention to return this weekend, with the Sunderland Echo reporting that he was back in training over the international break.

Lauded by journalist Phil Smith as "monstrous", the 21-year-old has operated in a deeper role this term, sweeping up possession in front of his backline and allowing Neil to have a greater creative influence going forward.

Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah.

The pair have formed a strong partnership at the heart of Sunderland's midfield and started each of their opening six Championship fixtures as Ekwah began to showcase his prominence as a tackling machine, averaging 1.3 interceptions, 1.7 tackles and 7.3 balls recovered per game, as per Sofascore.

With the 6 foot 2 midfielder displaying the physical attributes and stature that have been so desperately missed by Mowbray, the veteran manager could throw him straight back into the team against Stoke in place of Neil.
