Australia quicks targeting key Root wicket

Josh Hazlewood says Australia’s bowlers are competing for the chance to take down England’s captain Joe Root as they attempt to seal the Ashes in Perth

Johnson said bowl fast and short – Hazlewood

Australia’s bowlers are competing for the chance to take down England’s captain Joe Root, and have been heartened by Mitchell Johnson’s views on the touring side’s frail mental state ahead of the Perth Test that may seal the fate of the Ashes.Josh Hazlewood, who bowled the pivotal spell of the Adelaide Test to dismiss Root and Chris Woakes on a tense final day, said that he, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins have been pushing each other on to give England’s leader no respite in this series. Cummins and Hazlewood have alternated taking Root’s wicket in the four innings of the series so far, following Dale Steyn’s oft-quoted line about “cutting off the head of the snake” and ensuring that Root is unable to make his customary fast starts.”All the bowlers want that wicket and there’s obviously a couple of key ones which we’ve talked about,” Hazlewood said in Perth. “Joe is the key, he can hold the innings together and score runs pretty freely when he gets some poor bowling his way, so everyone has to be ready when he comes in and stop that quick 20 or 30 runs early.”It’s obviously a little bit more important, the time of that start of that fifth day when things could have gone either way, so you’re a bit more focused, [there’s] not as much room for error against those better players. Got to be on your game from ball one and he’s obviously going to punish anything that’s not your best ball. Still the key to him is bowling your best ball more often than not and hopefully keep the runs to a minimum and keep taking his wicket.”I think I’m just getting better as time goes on. Probably just my length I think, my length especially on the last day, so obviously be continuing to work on that and I think it’s on the rise so hopefully keep getting better.”Johnson’s presence at training on Monday afternoon was welcomed by the team, and Hazlewood said it had been useful to get the perspective of someone outside the comfortable “bubble” in which the Australians are operating – in sharp contrast to the difficulties being faced almost daily by England. Johnson’s advice on the bowling front was to the point, also: “Bowl fast and keep bowling short. Pretty simple method from Johnno.””You’re in the bubble the whole time. As soon as we got to Brisbane it was all cricket, all business,” Hazlewood said. “You do feel in that bubble, it takes some people from the outside to see things you’re not necessarily looking for. Johnno was good to talk to yesterday not just bowling but the mental side of it. He mentioned he saw a few things similar to 2013-14, those guys are always good to talk to about past experiences.”Josh Hazlewood had Joe Root caught behind for 67•Getty Images

Having had the benefit of several days off cricket after Adelaide, Hazlewood said the Australian pacemen were fresh and capable of getting through all five Tests, helped largely by the irrepressible Nathan Lyon. He also said the need for an allrounder, set to be taken up by the recalled Mitchell Marsh, was balanced against the desire for runs from the middle order.”I’ve only bowled under 40 overs in both games so I feel pretty fresh at this time of the year and the other quicks are pretty similar,” Hazlewood said. “They have probably bowled more than me but the way Nathan has bowled has given us the opportunity to sit out one or two spells here or there and him just go from one end.”He’s been bowling beautifully and taking wickets as well as keeping runs to a minimum, still feels pretty fresh at the moment. I think [I can get through five Tests], it’s still a long way off obviously and just got to take it game by game as a fast bowler or spell by spell at some stages, but feel as good as I have.”You always want an allrounder but at the same time you want those runs at No. 6, it would be ideal to have a Jacques Kallis or someone like that but they are pretty special players. I think at this stage the bowlers are pretty fresh and we’ve got another break after this so it’s obviously up to the selectors and what they feel.”The national selectors’ plans for the WACA Ground Test may well hinge on the state of the pitch, for any hint of help for the bowlers could allow Pete Handscomb to earn a reprieve as one of six batsmen. However, if the surface is anything like those prepared recently – it is the same strip used for last year’s Test won by South Africa – then Marsh is set to play. Given recent history, including a high-scoring bore draw with New Zealand in Johnson’s last Test in 2015, Hazlewood was not optimistic.”I usually just look at it when I get out there,” Hazlewood said. “Been pretty flat to be honest, especially the New Zealand game, there were a couple of big scores there. Hopefully it has some pace to it, but over the last few years it hasn’t been too good.”

Chateado, Ernando cobra erros defensivos do Bahia

Hathurusingha plays it cool on Mirpur return

The teams set to start the tri-series are Bangladesh and Zimbabwe but much of the focus in Mirpur on Sunday was on Hathurusingha who returned to Dhaka after his acrimonious exit as Bangladesh coach last year

The teams set to start the tri-series on Monday are Bangladesh and Zimbabwe but much of the focus at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Sunday was on Chandika Hathurusingha who returned to Mirpur after his acrimonious exit as Bangladesh coach last year.In the Sri Lankan camp now, Hathurusingha was speaking publicly in Bangladesh for the first time since he quit as their coach and there were bound to be questions about that. In particular focus was his resignation which reportedly came in the middle of Bangladesh’s tour of South Africa but was announced a month later by the BCB. The building excitement, however, gave way to one cool response after another.”I am excited to be back again in Bangladesh. I am looking forward to the series.””I think it is very challenging for us. Bangladesh has been really competitive at home lately.””Unfortunately, I am not going to go into details about my professional commitment or my dealings with BCB. So I can’t answer that.”Then came a minor slip-up, when he said “we” when referring to Bangladesh but quickly clarified which “we” he was talking about.”We haven’t lost a series, one series, in the last two and half years. When I say ‘we’, I mean Bangladesh. They have been playing good cricket in ODIs. They know their roles and game plan well. It is a big challenge for any team to play here,” Hathurusingha said.Only once his tone touched a higher note, when he was asked if it was irresponsible of him to quit in the middle of Bangladesh’s tour to South Africa. He said it wasn’t.Although Hathurusingha returned to Dhaka in December to tie up loose ends with the BCB, it is understood he did not submit a written report and board president Nazmul Hassan said that the coach’s decision to quit was prompted by the BCB allowing Shakib Al Hasan to rest during the South Africa Test series. The only time Hathurusingha spoke to the media during that tour was before the first Test, which prompted questions about his accountability to the Bangladesh fans who looked to him for answers after every thrashing on that winless tour. Hathurusingha remained steadfast with silence, only sending the BCB his resignation letter after the Test series, and not returning to Bangladesh for a debriefing.Ultimately, it was Mashrafe Mortaza, Bangladesh’s ODI captain, who eased the situation by giving Hathurusingha his due but at the same time pointing out how many of the players also did their jobs properly to bring Bangladesh the success.”Our dressing room has big-hearted players. On behalf of the Bangladesh players, I salute Hathurusingha,” Mashrafe said on Sunday. “We had success under him. I have no problem in giving him credit but the player did the job in the 22 yards.”The coach didn’t have to do anything special to Tamim, Mushfiqur, Shakib or Mustafizur. They did it themselves, and ultimately took on the pressure. When Mahmudullah made that hundred against New Zealand, I didn’t think anyone had to guide him through that innings. He performed according to his ability.”We backed the coach 100%, and we will keep backing the current coaching staff – Richard Halsall (interim coach), Sujon (Khaled Mahmud Sujon, the technical director). They are going to do the same, with full professionalism. But good luck to Hathu. We are more concerned about ourselves right now.”Some may expect Mashrafe’s statement to end all questions to and about Hathurusingha, but it is unlikely to be the case. The Bangladesh media is huge, and this is only the start of Sri Lanka’s tour.

Aston Villa: Emery could ditch £35m signing by unleashing 6 ft 1 star

Aston Villa head into the international break off the back of a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.

How did Aston Villa lose to Liverpool?

The Villans were put to the sword by Jurgen Klopp's side as their sloppy defending allowed the Merseyside hosts to win the game with relative ease.

Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring in just the third minute as a simple corner into the box was not cleared away from danger and no one came out to close down the Hungary international on the edge of the box, which allowed him to fire a strike into the far corner with his left foot.

The second goal came in the 22nd minute as Darwin Nunez evaded attention from Villa defenders within the box and his shot came crashing off the post and then into the back of the net off the unfortunate Matty Cash.

Mo Salah wrapped up the scoring in the second half as Unai Emery's side failed to react to a flick-on from Nunez from a corner and the Egypt international tapped in from close range.

How did Pau Torres perform against Liverpool?

One player who should be ditched from the starting line-up after the international break is central defender Pau Torres after a poor display at the heart of the defence, something that could open the door for Clement Lenglet to come in.

Express & Star journalist Lewis Cox went as far as to describe his performance as a 'nightmare' due to his struggles throughout the game, handing him a rating of 4/10, which was the lowest of anyone in the team.

Aston Villa defender Pau Torres.

Torres' play for the second goal was particularly disappointing as the Spain international was slow to react to a ball over the top to Salah and then appeared to jog back as Nunez ran ahead of him, which afforded the striker all the time in the world to pick his spot from six yards out.

His sloppy marking almost led to another goal for the hosts shortly after that as an in-swinging ball went over his head and to Joel Matip, whose effort went just wide of the far post.

He also only completed 72% of his attempted passes and recorded a Sofascore rating of 6.2 as he lost 50% of his aerial battles throughout the match.

The Spaniard has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.63 across four Premier League games so far this season and won 57% of his duels in total, suggesting he has struggled to adapt to the rigours of English football. To make matters worse, Torres has also made 0.5 tackles and interceptions per outing for his side and has been dribbled past 0.8 times per match.

To put that into context, no other Villa defender has averaged fewer than one tackle and interception combined per game this term, which comes after no centre-back with at least five starts managed fewer than 1.8 per match during the 2022/23 campaign.

None of his central defensive teammates have been dribbled past at all this season and these statistics illustrate how poor the 26-year-old dud has started life in Birmingham, as he has struggled to win possession back for his side and opposition players have found it too easy to go past him.

This means that it could be time for new signing Clement Lenglet, who recently arrived on loan from Barcelona, to come into the side on the left of the defence.

How good is Clement Lenglet?

The France international spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League and is, therefore, a proven performer at this level who could slot straight into the team alongside Diego Carlos, injury permitting, and Ezri Konsa.

As a left-footed defender, the 28-year-old is the perfect fit to replace Torres in order to provide balance in possession on that side of the pitch as he is comfortable playing the ball out from the back on his favoured left foot. Whereas, a right-footed centre-back who is not used to playing on the left may struggle to find the right angles to progress the play.

Former Tottenham loanee Clement Lenglet.

Last season, Lenglet played 26 top-flight games for Spurs and showed signs of promise with some of his work in and out of possession from defence.

The French titan made 2.2 tackles and interceptions per game and won 56% of his physical contests for the London club, whilst he was also dribbled past 0.7 times per clash.

No Aston Villa centre-back managed more than 1.9 tackles and interceptions per match last season in the Premier League, indicating that Lenglet could be an outstanding option for Emery in terms of his ability to win possession back by reading the game or making a vital challenge on a regular basis throughout games.

These statistics also suggest that the former Tottenham defender has the potential to be a stronger defender than Torres, who was brought in from Villarreal for a reported fee of £35m this summer, due to his superior knack for cutting out opposition attacks.

The 6 foot 1 enforcer could also offer a similar level of quality when it comes to bringing the ball out from the back to progress the play for the team.

Over the last 365 days, Lenglet ranks within the top 6% of his positional peers among Europe's top five leagues for progressive carries per 90 (1.59). Whereas, Torres ranks in the top 2% for progressive carries per 90 (2.11) during that period, with the majority of his minutes coming for Villarreal.

This shows that they are both among the best in their position when it comes to carrying the ball forward to gain yards on the opposition.

These numbers prove that Lenglet, who was hailed as "very strong" by compatriot and former Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris, would not be a significant downgrade on Torres in terms of what he offers in possession.

Therefore, Emery must ruthlessly ditch the Spaniard in order to start the loanee from Barcelona as he has the potential to provide more defensive steel whilst also being able to offer progression on the ball.

Bangladesh seniors boosting their side – Chandimal

While the likes of Shakib, Tamim and Mushfiqur are taking up responsibility, Mathews keeps getting injured, Chandimal himself is often not in good form and Thisara hasn’t quite racked up the best numbers in the tri-series

Andrew Fidel Fernando24-Jan-2018

Associated Press

Shouldering responsibility. Bangladesh’s senior players do it. Sri Lanka’s, not so much.Just look at the tournament charts. Tamim Iqbal tops the run-scorers’ list, with an average of 122. Shakib Al Hasan is third with 155 runs at 51.66. Shakib has also been inspirational on the bowling front, taking nine wickets for 124. And look who else he has for company near the top of that list: Mashrafe Mortaza and Rubel Hossain, who have claimed their wickets for well under 20 apiece as well. This has been a theme of Bangladesh’s rise in ODIs over the past three years. The Sabbir Rahmans and Soumya Sarkars may light up the odd match, but it is the old hands who man the engine room. If Bangladesh make a big score, you can almost be certain that one or more of Tamim, Shakib or Mushfiqur Rahim has contributed heavily. If they skittle an opposition, Mashrafe has probably played a vital role.Sri Lanka can only look on with envy. Their three most-experienced men in the squad were Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal and Upul Tharanga. Of those, Mathews has been injured more often than he has played over the past 18 months, and Chandimal has been in and out of the squad (justifiably). Tharanga, meanwhile, had scored heavily in 2017, but has been modest in this tournament, hashing together 53 runs across three outings. On the eve of a vital fixture between the sides, stand-in captain Chandimal agreed – the output of Bangladesh’s senior players has been instrumental to their success.”Bangladesh are an outstanding side, and they’ve got some very good players, for example Tamim, Shakib, Mushfiq and Mahmudullah,” Chandimal said. “They are doing their roles – that’s the main thing as senior players. They’ve played now almost eight to ten years in international cricket. I think that’s the advantage they’ve got at the moment. They’re playing some very good cricket now.”Among other problems for Sri Lanka, however, has been the frequency with which their top players have broken down. Mathews’ travails with various leg injuries are now well-known, but through the course of this tournament, Sri Lanka’s second-highest run-scorer Kusal Perera has picked up a side strain, while fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep is also battling a niggle. With so much uncertainty around fitness, Sri Lanka have found it difficult to field a consistent side.”In the last one-and-a-half years, injuries have been a major concern for us,” Chandimal said. “Once the players get injured you can’t get the right combination. We have concerns, but I’m sure the boys will come back strongly with their fitness and their injuries.”Sri Lanka have no choice, however, but to make the best of a less-than-ideal situation. With a weakened side, they must now either defeat a rampant Bangladesh, or lose very, very narrowly (provided the match is high-scoring enough) in order to make the final.”In this kind of tournament if you lose the first two games, it’s always tough,” Chandimal said. “But sometimes it gives you more confidence and morale to come back strong. As a team, we’re looking at it that way. We will have something up our sleeves.”

O jogo

"At least 20 goals a season" – Arsenal told to sign Brentford star

When it comes to firepower, Arsenal aren't exactly lacking these days, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah, and Gabriel Martinelli to call on. And if those four aren't in the mood for goals, then Martin Odegaard is another who could step up for his side.

Meanwhile, they finally discovered the secret formula to fixing their backline last season, with the clue right under their noses on loan in Ligue 1 all along. Since handing William Saliba an opportunity, the Gunners have been a force to be reckoned with, finishing second in the Premier League last season and securing their return to Champions League action as a result.

You can never have too much quality, however. Or, at least that's what former Premier League player Jay Bothroyd thinks, who has urged Arsenal to add one particular Brentford player to their ranks in January.

What has Bothroyd said?

Speaking about Mikel Arteta's attacking options on Sky Sports' Saturday Social, Bothroyd urged the former Manchester City assistant to bring in a new forward who could make an impact on his side. And that forward is Ivan Toney, who will be back from his eight-month ban in January, ready to find his form once again.

Bothroyd said, via Three Added Minutes: “He scores goals, he is prolific, he is strong, he leads the line really well. If you put him in any of the big teams, he is going to score at least 20 Premier League goals a season. Great on penalties. I would love Arsenal to sign him."

Now, whilst Arsenal are unlikely to take transfer advice from a pundit, signing Toney wouldn't exactly be a bad idea. The Brentford forward may currently be banned, but when the January transfer window swings open, he will be raring to go. Once past the ban for alleged betting offences, too, this is a player who scored 20 goals in the Premier League last season, likely firing him to the top of several clubs' wishlists.

Should Arsenal sign Ivan Toney?

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Last season, Toney would have been Arsenal's top goalscorer in the Premier League, given that only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland outscored the Brentford man in England's top flight, and his partnership with current main man Bryan Mbeumo was bordering on the spectacular.

The Gunners would become a much-improved side in front of goal, and the stats only back that up even further, as per FBref. When compared to both Nketiah and Jesus last season, it is Toney who stands out in some key areas.

As you can see, perhaps most impressively, Toney actually outperformed his expected goals, whilst both Nketiah and Jesus underperformed, and should have found the back of the net more times than they did. It is Toney's clinical nature in front of goal which could prove to be all the difference, but it remains to be seen whether Bothroyd's wish will come true in January.
