Everton reportedly remain interested in signing Salernitana forward Boulaye Dia in the summer transfer window, and could use Neal Maupay as part of any deal.
Are Everton signing a new striker?
The Blues have been on the lookout for attacking reinforcements since the end of last season, with more quality in the final third something that has to be addressed ahead of the new Premier League campaign after scoring just 34 top-flight goals last season.
El Bilal Toure is one player who has been linked with a move for Goodison Park, but he has instead opted to join Atalanta, acting as a blow for Everton.
Another target who has also been seen as a primary target is Dia, though, who caught the eye for Salernitana last season, scoring 16 goals and chipping in with six assists in Serie A. It was a highly impressive first season there, having initially joined on loan from Villarreal, but his temporary move has now become permanent.
Despite this, a move away this summer doesn't look out of the question, with a new update suggesting that there is one Everton player who could help a move to Merseyside come to fruition.
According to Tutto Salernitana [via Sport Witness], Everton aren't willing to pay the player’s €25m release clause but have "asked" to hold a meeting with Salernitana sporting director Morgan De Sanctis to discuss a potential deal.
Maupay is seen as someone who could become a key part of any move, with the Frenchman someone who the Italian outfit "like a lot", having been "one step away" from heading there last summer. The report also states that Salernitana want any potential transfer to be done and dusted in the next 10 days, rather than negotiations going on for too long.
This is certainly a positive update from an Everton perspective, not only giving them hope that they could sign Dia this summer, but also getting Maupay off their wage bill at the same time. He has been a big disappointment since arriving from Brighton last year, producing a poor return of just one goal and assist apiece in 29 appearances for the Blues.
For that reason, he may not be any real loss, and instead, they could be acquiring the signature of a more prolific player in Dia, having scored six goals in 25 appearances for Senegal at international level, netting once at the 2022 World Cup. Back in 2020, Senegal and former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane spoke highly of the forward, saying:
"I didn't know him before. But since the start of the season I started to follow him, and I'm really impressed by his qualities. I think he won't stay at Reims forever, believe me!"
Meanwhile, journalist Josh Bunting highlighted a key asset of Dia's, saying:
"Boulaye Dia the key man for Salernitana a goal and two assists so far since joining, a handful to deal with due to his hold up."
To be praised for such a big figure in his country's history speaks volumes about what Dia could be capable of in an Everton shirt, and his aforementioned assist tally last season shows that he is more than just a goalscorer. There still looks to be plenty to do, in order for the transfer to happen, but the Maupay factor is an added bonus, and it would be exciting to see Dia lining up for the Blues when they host Fulham in their Premier League opener next month.
Nuwan Pradeep, Rangana Herath left out on account of injuries; Danushka Gunathilaka also omitted

Fast bowlers Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Gamage have been added to Sri Lanka’s squad for the third Test, while batsman Danushka Gunathilaka – who played in Galle – has been omitted. Nuwan Pradeep, who is injured, and Rangana Herath, who is being rested on account of a stiff back, also exited the squad.Sri Lanka squad
Chameera’s inclusion was somewhat expected following the injury to Pradeep. Though he has not played a Test since December last year, he has had success in the format, most notably in New Zealand, where he claimed career-best figures of 5 for 47 on a fast, bouncy track in Hamilton. Chameera nursed a stress fracture through much of 2016, and has had only sporadic opportunities with the national team since then. At his quickest, he exceeds 145kph, but is yet to deliver a standout bowling performance since returning from that major injury. The addition of Gamage, however, was a little more of a surprise. Reputed as a good mover of the ball, he has often played for Sri Lanka’s A team, including against England Lions earlier in the year, but has not been in wicket-taking form recently. He did not take a wicket in the 17 overs he bowled in last month’s practice match against India in Colombo. With Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando already in the squad, Sri Lanka now have four quicks to choose from for the Pallekele Test.Gunathilaka’s omission, meanwhile, is perhaps owed to little other than circumstance. With Dinesh Chandimal now back in the side after missing the first match due to pneumonia, there are no more spots open in the top four. He had not put pressure on the selectors to remain in the squad either. Though he had come into the series in excellent limited-overs form, Gunathilaka made only 16 and 2 on Test debut. The third Test begins on Saturday.
Four half-centuries, and a four-wicket haul from Ashton Agar led the visitors to a 103-run victory in the warm-up fixture in Chennai
ESPNcricinfo staff12-Sep-2017 ScorecardMatthew Wade shored up the Australians with a rapid 45•PTI
The Australians kicked off their limited-overs tour of India with a dominant 103-run win over the Indian Board President’s XI in their only warm-up match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Powered by solid contributions from their batting order, with as many as four batsmen making half-centuries, the Australians ran up 347 for 7 before Ashton Agar returned a four-wicket haul to send Board President’s XI packing for 244.The Australians’ dominance began with a second-wicket stand between David Warner and captain Steven Smith, after Hilton Cartwright had been sent back for a second-ball duck by medium-pacer Avesh Khan. Warner raced to 64 off 48 balls and dominated the partnership of 106 before Kushang Patel, another medium-pacer, had him caught behind. Smith was more sedate for his 55 that took 68 balls, but with him and Glenn Maxwell falling in the space of six overs, the Australians went from 106 for 1 to 158 for 4.Travis Head added 88 with Marcus Stoinis, who top scored with 76 at No. 6. Head departed at the end of the 40th over, having scored 65 of 63 balls. Stoinis and Matthew Wade then pushed them into overdrive with a sixth-wicket stand of 85 that came in eight overs. Both batsmen fell in successive balls – Stoinis for a 60-ball 76 that had four fours and five sixes and Wade for 45 off 24 with two fours and four sixes – but the Australians still punched 16 runs in 11 balls after their dismissals.”I think when you are exposed to conditions, it obviously helps,” Stoinis said. “I’ve been part of three IPLs and A tour. Having an Indian coach … I have been working closely with him. That helps. Sriram and I got along very well at Delhi Daredevils in my first IPL. For four months I was working with him then. It was mostly defence in subcontinent and trying to trust that before you go on attack.”Hemang Badani, the Board President’s coach, didn’t think it was a 350 pitch and admitted they conceded too many. “I think it was 40 too many; 280, 290 would have been a decent target,” he said. “We would have planned and batted differently. With 340 on the board, it is difficult from ball one. Batting second tends to become difficult.”Board President’s XI’s spin duo of Washington Sundar and Rahil Shah held their own amid the carnage, giving away 55 runs in their combined 15 overs, with Washington’s figures reading 8-1-23-2.Board President’s XI, like the Australians, lost an early wicket in Rahul Tripathi but quickly recovered through a second-wicket stand between Shreevats Goswami (43) and Mayank Agarwal (42) that was worth 79. But 89 for 1 became 156 for 8 with little resistance coming from the middle order. Akshay Karnewar and Kushang held the Australians back briefly with 40 and 41 not out respectively, to help add 88 runs for the last two wickets. Agar dented the middle and lower order with 4 for 44.”Ashton Agar bowled beautifully,” Stoinis said. “It is also about understanding conditions and what lengths you want. I think everyone will get something out of it individually.”

Leeds United have been told that £12m could be enough to sign Coventry City defensive midfielder Gustavo Hamer this summer, but The Sky Blues are still desperate to keep him.
Is Gustavo Hamer leaving Coventry?
The Dutchman’s contract is set to expire in less than a year, meaning that this window will be the Sky Blues’ final opportunity to cash in should they not want to lose their prized asset for free. Having established himself as their overall top-performing player with a WhoScored match rating of 7.26 last season, excluding Luke McNally who has left, he won’t be short of potential suitors should he depart.
Building Society Arena boss Mark Robins was recently asked about speculation surrounding the 26-year-old’s future at the Championship club, to which he replied: “I have got nothing new to add on that or share with anybody. I think that will become clearer as we move forward, but that’s entirely down to Gus.”

Voetbal Rotterdam reported last month that the central talisman has been offered a new deal by the Midlands outfit but revealed that he hasn’t signed it amid interest from the Whites, Fulham and Burnley, who are stopping him from putting pen to paper, and should Daniel Farke want to secure his target in the final weeks of the window, he now knows how much cash will need to be put on the table.
Are Leeds signing Gustavo Hamer?
According to Football Insider, Leeds and other admirers will have to pay “upwards” of £12m if they want to sign Hamer this summer. The Elland Road outfit are claimed to still be monitoring the midfielder, though it’s stated that Coventry are “desperate” to keep hold of him as they look to make the top six once again.
City are “likely to ask” for an eight-figure fee following the £20m sale of Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting CP and are “willing to risk” losing him for nothing next summer having already rejected a player-plus-cash bid from Burnley.
Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer.
How many goals has Gustavo Hamer scored?
In the Championship last season, Hamer racked up 19 goal contributions (ten assists and nine goals) in 41 appearances, which is an extremely impressive return for someone who is naturally a defensive midfielder, so it would be a massive coup should he decide to make the move to Leeds.
The Itajai native, who’s sponsored by Adidas, also ranked in the 96th percentile for shots and whipped 174 crosses into the box which was more than any of his fellow teammates, via FBRef, with this outstanding form in the final third seeing him receive nine man-of-the-match awards from WhoScored.
Coventry’s “creative” wizard, as hailed by journalist Josh Bunting, who has the versatility to operate in five different positions, additionally shares the same agent, CAA Stellar, as Luke Ayling, Daniel James and Patrick Bamford. This existing connection that his representative already has to the club could give them a small advantage should they try to get a deal over the line in the weeks ahead.
CSA is hoping for Test status for the Boxing Day game against Zimbabwe, as the much-anticipated Test series against India has been reduced to three matches
Firdose Moonda20-Sep-20174:16
Four-day Tests on the cards
India’s tour to South Africa has been cut to three Tests from the original four, but will include an additional ODI, taking the total number of 50-over matches to six along with three T20s. As reported by ESPNcricinfo earlier in the week, India’s tour will begin with a late New Year’s Test which starts from January 5 at Newlands – three days later than the usual start for the festive fixture.Although South Africa have lost out on a Boxing Day Test against India, they host Zimbabwe for a four-day day-night match in Port Elizabeth, starting from December 26. Cricket South Africa is awaiting ICC approval before labelling the Zimbabwe fixture a Test. The confirmation of the India’s tour comes after months of speculation about when the tour would be finalised and whether South Africa would be able to host a 10-Test summer. That will only be possible if the Zimbabwe match is allowed to go ahead as a Test; CSA is confident the ICC will give them the green light at their October meeting in Auckland. For over a decade, the ICC has been hearing the case for four-day Tests and the discussion was taken up in earnest again this year. One of the key reasons for shortening Tests is to be able to save time on a tour and allow for more matches. An insider told ESPNcricinfo that CSA understands if four-day Tests are approved, they will only be played when decided by an MoU between member countries and they are more likely to be played between the so-called younger teams in Test cricket or when a top-tier team plays a lower-ranked opponent. South Africa hope to be pioneers in the format. After that match, they will turn their attention to India, who will arrive in South Africa on December 28, four days after their home series against Sri Lanka ends. India will have a two-day practice match in Paarl on December 30 and 31. India were understood to have wanted two warm-up matches, but there isn’t enough time.”The time constraints faced by India have forced us to reduce the Test matches to three, while increasing white-ball cricket to six ODIs and three T20I matches,” Haroon Lorgat, the CSA CEO, said.Cape Town will host the first Test while venues are yet to be confirmed for the following two. Given the large Indian support base in Durban, Kingsmead is highly likely to host one of the matches which will leave the Wanderers in Johannesburg or SuperSport Park in Centurion to host the remaining Test. While the Wanderers is regarded as South Africa’s home of cricket, SuperSport Park may edge it out because it is the only one of the big five grounds that does not host Australia for a Test in March.

Wolverhampton Wanderers haven’t exactly had the best preparation before starting their 2023/24 Premier League campaign.
The Old Gold have made just two signings this summer, with Matt Doherty and Tom King arriving at Molineux while Julen Lopetegui has left the club after just nine months in charge amid a summer of unrest.
Gary O’Neil is the new man in charge, and he is already looking at making his first signing as Wolves have shown interest in Murillo.
Could Wolves sign Murillo?
According to Goal Brasil (via Sport Witness), Wolves have ‘opened talks’ to sign the Brazilian defender from Corinthians this summer.
The Old Gold are willing to spend around €12m (£10m) in order to make a move happen, yet this won’t be enough, especially considering Fiorentina had a bid of a similar amount rejected recently.
Nottingham Forest are also showing interest in Murillio and O’Neil could face some Premier League competition for the youngster.
Corinthians are demanding a bid of at least €20m (£17m) for any team to lure the player out of Brazil and this shouldn’t present much of a problem for Wolves, who have yet to spend any of the £47m they received from the sale of Ruben Neves.
Who is Murillo?
O’Neil’s first port of call will be to improve his defensive options. Not only did Conor Coady leave the club, joining Leicester City in the Championship, but Nathan Collins also departed, securing a move to Brentford and the former Bournemouth manager is lacking any real depth at the back.
Murillo could add some much-needed depth to the first team squad, while also being a big upgrade on Toti Gomes.
The Portuguese centre-back couldn’t quite grab a regular slot at the heart of the defence last term, yet when he did, the 24-year-old failed to live up to his potential.
Murillo
The defender ranked 14th across the squad for tackles per game (0.9) while also ranking ninth for interceptions (0.6) and fourth for clearances (2.6) per game and keeping just four clean sheets in his 17 Premier League appearances.
For Corinthians this season, Murillo has already averaged 1.3 interceptions, 1.1 tackles and 4.8 clearances per game across just 12 matches and these figures rank him 12th, fourth and second in the squad receptively, clearly suggesting he could be an improvement on Toti.
The 21-year-old brute even ranks in the top 1% when compared to positional peers for blocks per 90 (2.13) and the top 8% for clearances per 90 (5.52) and the youngster has even displayed his attacking qualities, ranking in the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90 (0.75).
In contrast, Toti only ranked in the top 20% for blocks per 90 (1.46) when compared to positional peers across Europe’s big five leagues while ranking out with the top 35% for successful take-ons per 90 (0.82) and although he did finish in the top 1% for clearances per 90 (4.66), it’s evident that the Brazilian could be a better option at the back for O’Neil.
There is no doubt Wolves need to bolster their squad before the end of the transfer window and luring Murillo to the Midlands could give O’Neil his dream first signing, and he may just be the catalyst for a few more to arrive in the coming weeks.
