BCCI confusion spills over to Dubai

Even as the ICC meetings proceed in Dubai, there remains doubt over who will represent the Indian board at the Finance & Commercial Affairs (F&CA) meeting and the ICC Board meeting given the administrative flux at the BCCI

Nagraj Gollapudi02-Feb-2017

Who will be the BCCI’s representative(s) at the ICC meetings? It’s not yet clear•AFP

Almost exactly a year ago – on February 19, 2016 – the BCCI held a special general body meeting (SGM) in Mumbai. The meeting was chaired by then BCCI president Shashank Manohar and in attendance were board secretary Anurag Thakur, former BCCI and ICC president Sharad Pawar, and other senior BCCI and state association offiicials. The most important point on the agenda was the amount of revenue the BCCI would earn from the ICC’s commercial and broadcast rights deal for the 2015-2023 cycle. In the Big Three model, the BCCI was set to earn about $571.25 million if the ICC secured a rights deal worth $2.5 billion. The BCCI, Cricket Australia and ECB, constructors of this model, worked out the BCCI’s share to be 20.3%, the highest of all members, in recognition of the BCCI’s financial clout. The ECB and CA would also be due a bigger share than the others.Manohar, who took over as BCCI president in November 2015, also replaced N Srinivasan as ICC chairman (the BCCI representative would be ICC chairman for the first two years under the Big-Three governance structure revamp). And almost his first pronouncement as ICC chief was to criticise the Big-Three model, especially the financial inequality of its revenue distribution. He was said to have spoken of a 6% cut in the BCCI’s share, according to a Bangladesh cricket official. With Manohar as the chair, the ICC set up a five-man working group to review the Big-Three governance structure and recommend a new model after consultation with all Full Members and the major Associates.According to an official who was present at that SGM last February, the BCCI members agreed that the percentage of the BCCI’s share could be scaled down to 16-17%. Manohar and Thakur were authorised by the BCCI to negotiate this at ICC meetings. “But it was clearly decided that they would report back to the BCCI before any final decision was taken,” the official said.A year on, with the ICC’s working group’s report ready and containing recommendations for a new financial model and governance structures, leave alone the final decision – the BCCI currently does not even know who exactly will represent it at the important Finance & Commercial Affairs (F&CA) meeting on Friday and the ICC Board meeting on Saturday. On Monday, the Supreme Court of India had appointed a four-member committee of administrators to run the BCCI till fresh elections can take place, having already removed Thakur as BCCI president and Ajay Shirke as the board secretary on January 2.On the same day the court also approved two BCCI office bearers, treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry and joint-secretary Amitabh Choudhury to accompany Vikram Limaye, who sits on the court-appointed committee of adminstrators, to attend the ICC meetings, which began in Dubai today. On Tuesday, however, confusion began as the committee of administrators, in its first meeting, tasked Rahul Johri, the board CEO, with attending the ICC’s Chief Executive Committee’s (CEC) meeting and Limaye to do likewise at the F&CA and Board meetings. This was communicated by the BCCI to the ICC.The following day, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association – Srinivasan’s home base – went to court to intervene against the choice of representatives made by the committee of administrators. The court said the three men it had approved to travel to Dubai on Monday enjoyed “equal status” and should travel to Dubai. On Thursday, as the two-day CEC meetings began, Choudhury attended as the BCCI representative. Johri travelled to Dubai, but it is understood he was not in the meeting, as only one person can represent a member board. There is no clarity yet on who will represent the BCCI at the F&CA and Board meetings. The ICC constitution states that a Full Member may send one representative, not three. But an observer from the member board is allowed to sit in on the meeting, although he can have no say in the meeting itself. Ultimately, how many attend from the BCCI will be decided by senior ICC management, including Manohar. The committee of administrators believes Limaye will attend and that if the ICC insists on just one or at best, two, out of the court-approved three, then Limaye will have the authority to decide on who attends the meetings.Despite having been forced out of office in 2015 as BCCI president and then as TNCA president, Srinivasan continues to cast a shadow over the BCCI. On Tuesday, it has emerged, Choudhury forwarded the minutes of the first meeting of committee of administrators to him. That meeting was attended by Vinod Rai (chairman) along with Limaye and former India women’s captain Diana Edulji. Johri and Chaudhry were present and briefed the panel on various matters including the ICC meetings.Chaudhry sent the minutes to Choudhury, who then forwarded them to the TNCA treasurer. It is understood both the Lodha Committee and the committee of administrators are aware of this. Srinivasan, through his supporters within the BCCI, has been an objector to Manohar’s Big-Three rollback measures. Chaudhry is said to be the solitary voice who opposed Manohar during last February’s SGM, arguing that the BCCI would suffer a massive loss from a repeal of the Big-Three model.Regardless of who participates in the F&CA and Board meetings, the committee of administrators has made it clear no decision can be taken by the representative(s). “It is an unusual situation and we are waiting to hear back from ICC how many can attend,” one of the committee of administrators told ESPNcricinfo. He would only say that the main aim of the representative(s) will be to “appropriately” deal with the matters.

Everton 21 y/o Wants To Leave Goodison Park

Everton youngster Jarrad Branthwaite wants to leave the club during the summer transfer window, according to an update regarding his future.

When is Branthwaite out of contract at Everton?

The 21-year-old arrived at Goodison Park from Carlisle United back in 2020, and has since gone on to make 13 first-team appearances to date. Chances have been few and far between for him in an Everton shirt, however, and he spent last season on loan at Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, where he played 27 times in the Eredivisie.

Branthwaite's current Blues contract expires in the summer of 2025, meaning that time is slowly ticking by before they risk losing him on the cheap, with the next 12 months possibly becoming the last realistic chance to receive good money for his services.

It could be that the decision is out of the hands of Everton officials anyway, however, with a fresh update suggesting that his time at the club could be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

Could Branthwaite leave Everton this summer?

According to Football Insider, Branthwaite "has told the club he wants to leave this summer", with Everton wanting to retain his services after being impressed with his performances for PSV, but possibly having to accept that his mind is made up.

Branthwaite sees his future elsewhere moving forward – he is "keen" to find a club where he will be guaranteed more regular first-team football in the coming years – with West Ham one of the clubs who could potentially sign him before the beginning of the 2023/24 season.

Losing Branthwaite this summer would be a blow for Everton, considering former manager Carlo Ancelotti once admitted he was "really impressed" with him during his time at the club, whereas he was called "terrific" by ex-Carlisle boss Steven Pressley, so the ideal outcome would be for him to stay for at least another season.

If Sean Dyche doesn't see the one-time capped England Under-21s international as a key man moving forward, however, it is pointless keeping hold of an unhappy player, instead allowing him to thrive elsewhere, as was the case at PSV.

That being said, there is no guarantee that things could pan out differently for Branthwaite at West Ham, should he move there, with the Hammers also having plenty of competition for places, so the centre-back must think long and hard before making what is a big decision in his career, although it appears as if he is leaning in the direction of an exit at this stage.

Leeds Could Ditch Bamford For ‘Stunning’ £40k-p/w Gem

Leeds United have endured a slow start to their summer, having yet to welcome a new manager into their dugout, and therefore made no signings either.

If they are truly keen on an instant return to the Premier League, they must rectify this soon.

Fortunately for fans of the club, many are aware that a deal for Daniel Farke seems all but complete, with the completion of the 49ers' takeover the only thing standing in the way of its announcement and the true start of their transfer window.

That is not to suggest that targets have not already been identified though, with one report emerging late last month linking the Whites with a move for Emmanuel Dennis.

Given the Nigeria forward struggled for game time within Nottingham Forest's bloated squad, the Yorkshire outfit could offer him an escape, to replace their own struggling striker and add some much-needed firepower to propel them out of the Championship.

Would Emmanuel Dennis improve Leeds United?

Despite having only spent two years in English football now, it feels like the 25-year-old has been around for far longer.

Having joined Watford in 2021, the marksman quickly established himself as one of the hottest prospects in the top flight with his blistering start.

Journalist Josh Bunting even noted during that time that he was an "absolutely stunning player2."

This culminated in his tally of ten goals alongside six assists for the year, which still could not prevent the Hornets from the drop.

However, it alerted many to his ability to thrive at the top level.

Whilst the Tricky Trees were unwilling to hand the £40k-per-week dynamo the necessary play time to prove this further, a move to Elland Road could help him become a hero by firing them to promotion and then helping spearhead the retention of their top-flight status.

Just 39 minutes per game last campaign fed into his underwhelming record of two goals and two assists all season, via Sofascore.

His presence would at the very least provide an upgrade on Patrick Bamford, who Farke could seek to immediately bin given his performances last term.

patrick-bamford-leeds-united

Having made 28 league appearances, the Englishman would record just four goals, missing a whopping 13 big chances with a conversion rate of just 8%. If their new boss has serious ambitions of competing at the top of their new division, they will need a far more reliable frontman than the 29-year-old who made missing sitters in huge moments an unfortunate habit.

For comparison, Dennis would miss just five big chances in that aforementioned breakout year, with a goal conversion rate of 17%, via Sofascore.

With pace, physicality, finishing prowess and youth all on his side, Farke could do much worse than immediately ditching Bamford for Dennis as his first big call as the new manager.

Man United "Looking At" £30m World Cup "Monster"

Manchester United are "looking at" Firorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat as a potential summer target, but any deal would be "contingent on sales", claims Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Manchester United transfer news – What's the latest on Sofyan Amrabat?

United have made a positive start to the summer transfer window, finally securing the signature of Chelsea academy star Mason Mount after their bid of £55m was accepted by the west London club following weeks of back-and-forth negotiations.

Chelsea's Mason Mount

As good a signing as Mount is for the Red Devils, to compete for the title again, they will need to add yet more talent, and that is exactly what it looks like they plan on doing after Erik ten Hag told the United higher-ups: "If you want to play top four, you have to invest."

That investment looks to be going towards additional midfield reinforcements following their recent purchase.

Morocco star Amrabat is a player in which the club is particularly interested and could be available for as little as £30m, per the Daily Mail.

However, if the three-time European champions want to secure the signature of the 26-year-old, they will first have to free up the finances by selling several players in their squad, per Dharmesh Sheth.

He explained the situation on Sky Sports News, saying:

"We are told that he's a player that Manchester United are looking at and are aware of, it's thought though that anymore midfield additions at Old Trafford would be contingent on sales."

How good is Sofyan Amrabat?

It's been an unbelievable last 12 months for the Huizen-born "monster", going from a popular and effective player in Serie A for club side Fiorentina to a worldwide superstar thanks to the crucial role he played in helping his national side make their fairytale run to the World Cup semi-finals.

Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

Either side of his performances in Qatar, he had a solid domestic season, with WhoScored giving the 6 foot 1 warrior an average rating of 6.46 across his 29 league appearances.

His underlying numbers suggest that there is even more to come from the battling midfielder.

According to FBref, who compare players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, he sits in the top 5% for pass completion, the top 8% for progressive passes and the top 11% for attempted passes, all per 90.

However, it was on the biggest stage of all, the World Cup, where he truly shone and demonstrated to the world just how good he could be.

So good were his performances for the Atlas Lions that journalist Nigel Adderley proclaimed him Morocco's "player of the tournament."

Sofyan Amrabat shields the ball for Fiorentina in Serie A.

It was his display against France that drew particular praise from ex-pro Stuart Pearce, who lauded the midfield dynamo, saying:

"His drive, his energy, his leadership, everything that he stood for today, the French didn't have in their ranks."

If United can secure Amrabat's signature and do it for a price as low as the reported £30m, it could end up being one of the deals of the summer and, combined with Mount, make their midfield so much stronger for years to come.

Headingley future assured after council reaches funding agreement

Headingley’s future as a Test venue appears to have been assured, following a funding agreement between Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds City Council over the redevelopment of the ground’s rugby stand

Headingley’s future as a Test venue appears to have been assured, following a funding agreement between Yorkshire and Leeds City Council over the redevelopment of the ground’s rugby stand that has served a dual purpose for cricket and rugby clubs over the past 84 years.Without the agreement, the ground’s future would have been in immediate peril. The club, already £24 million in debt, required council support to fulfil their £17 million share of a £32 million joint redevelopment with Leeds Rhinos, without which, the ECB had indicated, the ground could not be awarded any international fixtures beyond 2019.Now, however, Leeds City Council has brokered a £35m investment from a London-based investment group, subject to final approval by the authority’s executive board. The investors have proposed to build the new stands and rent them back to the cricket and rugby clubs. The agreement follows a sizeable public outcry following the council’s decision to withdraw the promise of a £4m grant to Yorkshire as it drew up its £2bn budget in a febrile atmosphere in which central government cutbacks sparked an internal row within the ruling Labour group over the closure of three are homes.Yorkshire were also at loggerheads over the proposed term of any private loan which councils are able to obtain at preferential rates compared to the open market.”I’m delighted we’ve found a solution that will ensure Headingley continues to enjoy full international sporting status,” Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said.”Subject to the final approval of the council’s executive board, this will deliver the funding to redevelop the stadium in full. The money will be provided by a private financial services company at no cost to the council tax payer, which offers the best and most viable option moving forward.”Mark Arthur, Yorkshire’s chief executive, said: “We would like to thank councillor Judith Blake and Leeds City Council for their support in reaching this point. There is still a way to go, however, it is a significant step in securing the future of international cricket at Headingley.”Yorkshire County Cricket Club will continue to work hard to ensure that all remaining funds are in place to ensure that the redevelopment is completed in time for the Cricket World Cup in 2019.”Gary Hetherington, chief executive of Leeds Rhinos, added: “We have been working closely with Leeds City Council and partners to find a solution to ensure international sport continues at Headingley Carnegie for many years to come and we appreciate all the effort and commitment put in by Leeds City Council to broker this deal.”There is still much to do but recent developments are very encouraging and could provide the funding mechanism to complete the redevelopment work.”

Celtic Are The Main Contender To Sign £21k-p/w "Hurricane" This Summer

A new name has emerged as a reported transfer target for Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers ahead of the 2023/24 Scottish Premiership campaign…

What's the latest Celtic transfer news?

According to Ukrainian outlet FootballHub (via Sport Novyny), the Hoops are the leading contender to land Shakhtar Donetsk winger Tete during the summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Brazilian forward has requested a move away from the team as he would not like to return to Ukraine, after loan spells with Lyon and Leicester City over the last 18 months.

It does not state how much Shakhtar would demand for the 23-year-old ace's services or name any of the other sides in the race for his signature.

However, they may not have much leverage in negotiations as the player's contract with the club expires at the end of December later this year, which means that he will be a free agent when the January window opens for business.

How good is Tete?

Tete is a wide attacker with the potential to be the dream heir to Liel Abada, who has been linked with a £10m switch to the Premier League this summer, at Parkhead next season.

The Hoops head coach already knows all about the talented maestro as the Northern Irish tactician signed him for the Foxes at the start of 2023.

Rodgers hailed the gem's touch as "immaculate" and said: “Tete was what I have been talking about for 18 months – a right-winger that can take the ball, pass the ball, look after it, make runs and work.”

Former Leicester City loanee Tete.

They were only able to work together for nine competitive matches, though, as the Foxes battled against relegation, which meant that Tete only contributed with one goal.

However, the £21k-per-week dynamo's form with Lyon in France suggests that the quality is there for him to be an excellent replacement for Abada, should the Israel international move on before the deadline.

The Brazil U23 international produced eight goals along with eight assists across 26 Ligue 1 outings, which meant that he averaged a goal contribution every 1.44 games on average.

Abada, meanwhile, scored ten goals and provided five assists in 34 Premiership matches, which works out to an average of one direct involvement every 2.27 outings.

The 21-year-old hotshot was Ange Postecoglou's third-top scorer in the league last term as only Kyogo Furuhashi (27) and Jota (10), who has since left to join Al Ittihad, found the back of the net more often than him.

His goalscoring talents make him an important member of Rodgers' squad, particularly after the former Benfica star's move to Saudi Arabia, and that is why signing a winger with the quality to offer a similar threat is important.

Therefore, Tete, who was once dubbed a "hurricane" by Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin, could be the dream heir to Abada as his form for Lyon indicates that the ability is there for him to be a regular scorer from a wide position.

The exciting 5 foot 9 talent could even be an upgrade on the Premier League transfer target due to his ability to assist goals more frequently from the right wing, as Jota (11) was the only Hoops winger with more than eight league assists last season.

Tete's pre-existing relationship with Rodgers, along with the manager's comments on him, also means that he could be able to hit the ground running due to his familiarity with the ex-Liverpool coach's style of play.
