Man City In "Concrete" Talks To Sign £150k-p/w Maestro

Manchester City have opened talks to sign Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic as Pep Guardiola could potentially lose Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva this summer.

What are Manchester City's midfield transfer plans?

Reports have claimed that with Gundgoan a free agent this summer, he has been in contact with Barcelona over a Bosman transfer to the Nou Camp. The German will continue talks with the Blaugrana following the FA Cup and Champions League finals to come.

Meanwhile, another report has suggested that those at the Etihad Stadium will not stand in Silva's way if he requests a move abroad. Barcelona are also keen on the player, although a £75m valuation set by the Premier League champions could be too much for the Catalan giants.

City may need to replace Gundogan and have seemingly already begun that process. According to Fabrizio Romano, City have opened concrete talks to sign Kovacic. The Italian journalist describes talks over personal terms between the club and Kovacic's camp as "positive".

"Manchester City have opened concrete talks to sign Mateo Kovacic in the summer. Positive discussions took place with player’s camp in the last few days over personal terms.

"Chelsea, open to selling Kovacic as part of midfield revolution. Talks will continue soon."

The Croatian currently earns £150,000-a-week with Chelsea but his contract with the Blues comes to an end in June 2024, as per Spotrac.

Why would Pep Guardiola want Mateo Kovacic at Manchester City?

The midfielder has a wealth of experience at the top level, boasting 221 Chelsea appearances, 109 with Real Madrid as well as 97 appearances for Inter Milan. Hailed as an "unbelievable footballer" in the media, he could prove to b a shrewd signing by City.

Even for those not familiar with Kovacic, his numbers paint a beautiful picture for a coach like Guardiola. Fbref reports that the 29-year-old has some of the best passing stats in the world when compared to other midfielders. Not only is he in the 92nd percentile for passes completed, Kovacic has some of the best stats around when progressive passing is considered. On average, he plays 8.7 passes per 90 into the final third, illustrating his ability to slide passes between the lines.

This is a key element of the Man City tactical system. Gundogan, a player Guardiola may miss dearly even if he is adequately replaced, plays 5.5 passes into the final third per 90.

Throughout his career, Kovacic has also been successful, winning the Champions League once with Chelsea and three times with Real Madrid. He also won the Europa League in 2018/19 and La Liga in 2016/17. That personal collection of achievements may grow even further with a possible move to Man City, and it looks as if a deal is one to watch.

Arsenal pre season tour 2023: fixtures, dates, ppv, rooney, usa

Arsenal enjoyed a remarkable season in the Premier League this year, which saw them hold onto top spot for a record 248 days before a late-season collapse allowed the imperious Manchester City to claim their third straight title.

The Gunners started last season with a string of pre-season victories in the United States against Chelsea and Everton, and fans will be hoping another American tour this summer can inspire the team to another title challenge come August.

What are Arsenal's 2023 pre-season fixtures?

The club have confirmed three pre-season fixtures so far, but if last season is anything to go by, we should expect them to start pre-season with a behind-closed-doors friendly and end it with the Emirates Cup.

The confirmed fixtures from the Arsenal official site.

Arsenal v MLS All-Stars, July 14th, kick-off: 04:30 BST Arsenal v Manchester United, July 22nd, kick-off: 22:00 BST Arsenal v Barcelona, July 26th, kick-off: TBC Where are Arsenal playing their pre-season fixtures?

For a second year running, the Gunners will be heading to the United States of America for the bulk of their pre-season, playing their three games in three different cities.

Arteta's men will kick off their tour against the MLS All-Stars at Washington DC's Audi Field. The game won't be easy for the boys in red and white, and there should be some added excitement due to ex-Manchster United legend Wayne Rooney managing the American side.

After the announcement, Rooney expressed his excitement to ESPN: "The opportunity to lead the best our league has to offer against a top Premier League club like Arsenal will be a highlight for me personally and an unforgettable experience for our passionate fanbase here in DC."

Arsenal's next game, against Manchester United, will occur in the city that never sleeps, New York. The venue for this all-English affair will be the massive Met Life stadium, home to the New York Jets NFL team.

The final game of the tour against La Liga champions Barcelona takes the north Londoners to the West Coast. Los Angeles's SoFi stadium will play host to the two teams.

SoFi stadium is owned by Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke and is the home of his Super Bowl winning NFL team, the LA Rams.

Can I buy tickets for the games?

Tickets for the first game of the tour against Rooney's MLS All-Stars are still available on Ticketmaster, but with the cheapest tickets priced at £202, it certainly isn't for the faint of heart.

Ticketmaster is also selling tickets to the game against Manchester United, with these ones being somewhat cheaper at around £136.

Those who fancy a trip to Los Angeles to see the Gunners take on the Blaugrana can expect to pay the least with Ticketmaster pricing tickets from £86.

Can I watch the games on TV in the UK?

Arsenal are yet to announce details on how fans can watch the club's matches whilst on tour, but if the last few years are anything to go by, the club will likely charge fans on a per-game basis through their own in-house media.

Fans have also been able to watch extensive highlights through Arsenal's YouTube channel during recent tours.

When does Arsenal's Premier League season start?

The Premier League season is scheduled to start on August 12th 2023, just 17 days after Arsenal's final pre-season game against Barcelona.

Arteta and co will undoubtedly have one eye on the season proper whilst in the USA.

Who is likely to go on the USA tour?

Arteta will likely bring the whole first-team squad to undergo as much preparation as possible before mounting another challenge for the Premier League title. Some of the youngsters that can expect a place on the plane would be Reuell Walters, Catalin Cirjan, Amario Cozier-Duberry and the forgotten Marquinhos. Additionally, if Edu conducts the club's transfer business similarly to last year, we could see some summer signings make their debuts in the US, looking at you, Declan Rice.

Didn't find any difference in pink-ball cricket – de Kock

South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock has said the pink ball wasn’t as tricky as they thought it would be

Harder for batsmen to adjust to pink ball – Abbott

South Africa came through their first outing with the pink ball without any problems in their tour match at the Adelaide Oval. In preparation for their first day-night Test, South Africa’s batsmen spent 133.5 overs facing the pink ball and their centurion Quinton de Kock explained that it was not as tricky as they thought it would be.”I didn’t find any difference,” de Kock said. “I am not one to overthink it. A ball is a ball. I just play the way I should be playing in that situation, it’s no difference to me.”De Kock warned spectators not to read too much into the performances. “It doesn’t bother me whether I score a duck or a hundred. To me a warm-up game and a net is the same thing. When it comes to game time and focus time, I like to contribute where I can,” he said.De Kock only batted in the first innings and scored 122 of 103 balls. Hashim Amla (51), JP Duminy (97) and Rilee Rossouw (77 in the second innings) also got comfortable, but openers Dean Elgar and Stephen Cook, and the captain Faf du Plessis did not capitalise on their starts. They will have a second opportunity to get their eyes in, when South Africa play another day-night practice match in Melbourne before the third Test, which will be played with the pink ball. For de Kock, the two things that stood out were not different from what he faces in any other game. “Early on, I found it a little difficult but I think that is part of any cricket, white ball or red ball,” he said. “I also found the outfield quite slow. Normally, you play on a square back home so it’s easier to hit the boundaries. With a drop-in pitch, hitting boundaries was a bit harder.”De Kock also played down the difficulty of batting during the twilight period, when natural light is replaced by artificial light. “I thought it was quite nice during the twilight period, actually,” he said. That period was also when South Africa’s bowlers found it best to use the pink ball. “It seems to nip around when the lights come on but not so much during the day,” fast bowler Kyle Abbott said. “There was a bit of grass on this wicket. Not a huge amount of swing, just a bit more nip off the surface.”Abbott joked that the South African team thought they had not seen that much grass on a surface in “the last seven years,” and that he would not mind if a similar amount was left for the Tests, albeit of a slightly greener variety. The ground staff may have to do something like that because the pink ball’s reputation for early deterioration remains. “After 15 overs or so, it [the ball] started to peel,” Abbott said.South Africa’s five quicks bowled in short spells and took two wickets each to end their first warm-up successfully. Tabraiz Shamsi, the only spinner, bowled only three overs without any wickets.

Kohli, Rahane put India in control

An unbroken partnership of 167 between Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, the highest of the series so far, put India in control at the end of Indore’s first day of Test cricket

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy08-Oct-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:29

Agarkar: Kohli batted according to the merit of the ball

An unbroken partnership of 167 between Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, the highest of the series so far, put India in control at the end of Indore’s first day of Test cricket. Kohli ended the day on 103, his 13th Test hundred. It was by no means his most enthralling innings, but it was utterly dominant in that he gave New Zealand no inch on a largely attritional day. Rahane, less certain, gutsed it out to stay unbeaten on 79 and India were 267 for 3.Having come together at 100 for 3, with the match in the balance, Kohli and Rahane gradually asserted India’s dominance in front of an enthusiastic crowd numbering over 18,000. Having started watchfully – they added 48 in 20 overs before tea – they grew increasingly fluent, scoring 119 in the final session in 34 overs, at exactly three-and-a-half runs an over. All five of New Zealand’s bowlers were disciplined and had well-thought-out plans, but there was little help for them off a pitch that wasn’t the greatest to look at, with cracks all over its surface, but played more or less true on the first day, if a little slow. The offspinner Jeetan Patel was their best bowler, but his figures – 1 for 65 off 24 overs – told a story: he frequently beat the batsmen in the air, but they usually managed to adjust since it didn’t turn all that much or all that quickly once it landed.Kohli came into the match with scores of 44, 3, 4, 9, 18, 9 and 45 in his last seven Test innings, but the last of them, in Kolkata, had been a superb display of footwork and judgment on a pitch with uneven bounce. It suggested he wasn’t really out of form.Again, in Indore, he avoided the extravagant shots that had got him out in his first three innings of the series, and accumulated steadily, blending into the background for most part. He didn’t offer any clear chances, and the two times he edged the ball, it eluded the fielders: on 39, drift caused him to edge Patel between keeper and slip; on 69, he reached out at a wide-ish length ball from James Neesham, and edged through a vacant first slip.Otherwise, New Zealand could see no way past him and, every now and again, he roused the crowd with his strokeplay. There were a couple of his trademark extra-cover drives, but his most breathtaking shots on the day came on the leg side: a checked pull off Trent Boult, when he adjusted to the ball staying lower than expected; a back-foot whip to the right of midwicket, against the turn, off Mitchell Santner; a clip off the legs, off Boult, that bisected square leg and long leg. All three times, the ball sped away effortlessly, testament both to the quickness of the outfield and to Kohli’s timing.Rahane endured a few nervous moments against the short ball. Twice – on 3 by Matt Henry and on 25 by Neesham – he lifted his hands instinctively to protect his face, and was lucky the ball hit his arm guard on both occasions rather than his glove. On 7, he top-edged a pull as Boult went around the wicket and angled a short ball into his body, and saw the ball fall inches wide of Henry rushing in from the square leg boundary. On 41, he kept his gloves and bat out of the way of a Henry bouncer, but couldn’t move his upper-body across quickly enough to evade it, and took a blow to the back. There were a number of other times when he ducked or swayed awkwardly, with eyes off the ball, as well.Ajinkya Rahane endured a few nervy moments against the short ball•BCCI

But a good batsman makes runs even in discomfort, and Rahane did not let these moments affect him. His defence was solid, and he got his head right on top of the ball while striding forward to the spinners – a failure to do so had cost him his wicket twice in Kanpur. Occasionally, he served up a reminder of his timing, such as when he lofted Patel back over his head and when he drove Santner inside-out to the cover boundary. He went past fifty with a six, stepping out to Patel, not quite reaching the pitch of the ball, but adjusting by playing with an almost horizontal bat to swat the ball over wide long-on.Given the look of the surface, India seemed to gain an early advantage when they won their third toss of the series and their eighth in a row in home Tests. Batting, by general consensus, would be easiest on days one and two. But India didn’t really press their advantage in the first two sessions, despite their batsmen looking fairly comfortable in the middle. The crowd was treated to an entertaining start as M Vijay drove Boult on the up for two fours through the covers in the third over of the morning, and Gautam Gambhir, returning to the Test side after two years to replace the injured Shikhar Dhawan, pulled Henry for successive sixes in the fourth over. Kane Williamson, back in charge of New Zealand after missing the Kolkata Test with illness, brought Patel on in the fifth over, and he struck with his fifth ball, getting it to dip on Vijay, who looked to flick a long way in front of his body and gave Tom Latham the chance to pull off a juggling reflex catch at short leg. There was little turn on offer for Patel and Santner, who bowled from both ends till the 11th over, and Cheteshwar Pujara and Gambhir settled down nicely before Boult and Henry came back into the attack. The quicks changed their lengths to Gambhir in their second spells, bowling noticeably fuller and trying to exploit the left-hander’s tendency to shuffle across his crease. He grew quieter against this mode of attack, scoring only two runs in 20 balls before he was lbw to Boult, bringing his bat down at an angle to a full one that nipped in slightly.Pujara looked serene through to lunch, using his feet to the spinners, getting nicely on top of the rising ball against the quicks, putting the bad ball away, and showing more willingness than in Kolkata – given the lack of turn or seam movement off this surface – to change the angle of his bat face to look for singles on both sides of the pitch. After lunch, however, both he and Kohli had to work hard for their runs as Patel settled into a good rhythm. He caused both batsmen problems, bellowing out an lbw appeal after Kohli went back to a quicker one on a good length – the ball striking his pad just outside the line – and throwing his hands up in the air when Pujara came down the track, failed to cover for drift, and edged a defensive push through backward point. It was Santner, though, who gave New Zealand the breakthrough, in the second over of a new spell. Firing one in just short of a good length, he caused indecision in Pujara, who pressed half-forward, and then went halfway back and ended up caught on the crease as the ball spun sharply past his defensive bat and hit his off stump.

Arsenal Could Bin Nketiah In £9m Transfer Swoop

Arsenal have been linked to a Serie A striker ahead of the transfer window, as Mikel Arteta aims to bolster his title challenging squad this summer.

The Gunners have reportedly been after the player ‘for a while’, and may opt to finally reach an agreement with the ace as the club enter the search for increased squad depth to bridge the gap between themselves and champions Manchester City.

What’s the latest on Antonio Sanabria to Arsenal?

As noted by La Stampa (via Sports Witness), Torino forward Antonio Sanabria is ‘on the Gunners’ agenda’ this summer.

The report states that the player's value of €10m (£9m) ‘cannot scare off’ clubs interested in the striker, with Arsenal ‘above all’ having interest in the goal-getter for a while.

The interest between club and player reportedly spans over a decade, with the Londoners attempting to sign the ace as a teenager.

What could Antonio Sanabria bring to Arsenal?

Being raised in the infamous youth setting of La Masia, the Paraguayan was destined to shine from a young age, which he’s shown through a strong goal-scoring pattern throughout his career.

Having scored 27 La Liga goals and 32 Serie A goals in his career so far – as per Transfermarkt – the 27-year-old could be a worthy introduction to Arteta’s plans, as the Spaniard bids to have a stronger level of depth going into next season.

Despite displaying a delightful cameo when filling the boots of Gabriel Jesus due to the Brazilian’s injury, Eddie Nketiah remains Arsenal’s third-choice forward behind the former City ace and the newly arriving Leandro Trossard.

With Sanabria potentially on the horizon, the Paraguayan could force the 24-year-old further down the pecking order as he would arrive as an already established goal scorer.

eddie-nketiah-arsenal-khayon-edwards-arteta-academy-hale-end

This season, the Torino sharp-shooter has contributed to 16 goals in Serie A, scoring 12 himself and setting up four for his teammates in an impressive feat for the mid-table side, via Sofascore.

Criticised for ‘not taking his chances’ by those at the Emirates Stadium, Nketiah falls short of the Arsenal target in terms of average number of non-penalty goals, with 0.34 to the San Lorenzo-born gem’s 0.41 per 90, as per FBref.

Arteta could opt to introduce a seasoned player in the final third to add a more clinical aspect to Arsenal, who have been criticised by former player Paul Merson for not scoring ‘scrappy goals’ when it matters most, via GIVEMESPORT.

Lauded as “brilliant” by Roma legend Francesco Totti, Sanabria could be the missing piece to the Spaniard’s puzzle in closing the gap on Pep Guardiola’s side, who have an absurd amount of quality in their ranks, allowing them to conquer on most occasions.

With the transfer window approaching, and an attractive goalscorer potentially available for a low price, Arteta must fire fast to capture his target and bin Nketiah in the process.
