BCB set to add coach Hathurusingha to selection panel

BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said that coach Chandika Hathurusingha is set to be made a selector to keep track of emerging players in domestic cricket

Mohammad Isam31-May-2016BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said that coach Chandika Hathurusingha is set to be made a selector to keep track of emerging players in domestic cricket. Hathurusingha, who is currently on a “number of days” contract, would be needed to closely monitor domestic cricket.”I want coach to watch matches rather than sitting idle,” Hassan said. “He will have a role to play. Someone or the other must watch each domestic match so that we know about the emerging cricketers. I don’t want a situation where the coach doesn’t know anything about a new player.”Our contract with him is based on “number of days” but he is taking advantage of it. We got him whenever we wanted him, and it will happen in the future too.”On Monday, Hassan held discussions with the six-member technical committee on the proposals made by the working committee last week, including the expansion of the selection panel.Hassan said that it was unanimously agreed that the national coach should be part of the selection committee and that a fourth selector should be added to the panel. He also said the board wanted to add the manager and cricket operations committee chairman to the panel. The chairman of the cricket operations committee is likely to head the panel.”There may be one other selector included as well as the coach becoming a selector,” Hassan said. “The technical committee agreed that the coach should be in the selection committee since it was like that in the past.”I want to see our selectors go to Sylhet, Chittagong and Khulna to watch domestic matches. This is why I want four selectors instead of three.”Hassan explained that the cricket operations committee chairman would not be directly involved in selection. Instead, he would work as a witness to proceedings between the coach and selectors. Former Bangladesh captain Akram Khan is currently the cricket operations committee chairman.”The cricket operations committee’s chairman won’t be directly involved with selection but he will be present when the selectors sit with the coach to pick the squad,” Hassan said.”The recommendation to include the manager hasn’t come to me yet. But the selected squad has always come through the operations committee. The change now will be that before sending the final squad to me, the coach and selectors will be present when it is sent so that there’s no disagreement between them after sending the team. Sometimes changes have to be made so that these things don’t happen.”There had been instances of discord between the selection panel and team management in the last two years. In February 2014, the then captain Mushfiqur Rahim had criticised chief selector Faruque Ahmed for not consulting him before picking the Asia Cup squad.Bangladesh’s 2015 World Cup squad announcement was delayed by two hours because the board’s higher-ups wanted to “discuss” the make-up of the squad with the selection committee. Three days later, coach Chandika Hathurusingha said that he wanted a legspinner, Jubair Hossain, in the World Cup squad. After hearing the working committee’s recommendations, Faruque had said that he was reluctant to continue if the board approved the proposed expansion of the selection committee.Hassan, however, believed that that the new system would make the selection process smoother. He also acknowledged the contribution of the incumbent selectors – Faruque, Minhajul Abedin and Habibul Bashar.”If the selectors didn’t do their job properly, Bangladesh wouldn’t have performed so well,” Hassan said. “There’s a big contribution of the selection panel in Bangladesh’s recent success. This is a step taken towards doing this work in a smoother manner.”

Positive Injury News For £85k-p/w West Ham Star

Insider ExWHUEmployee has claimed that West Ham United are "confident" Michail Antonio will be available to play in the Europa Conference League this week.

What's the latest West Ham injury news?

On Thursday night, the Hammers will take part in one of the biggest games in their recent history as they face AZ Alkmaar away from home.

This is of course as they push to make a European final having won the first leg of their semi-final encounter 2-1 at the London Stadium thanks to goals from Said Benrahma and Antonio.

Worryingly for West Ham, however, their key striker was missing this weekend in the 2-0 loss away at Brentford due to a calf injury and there has been doubt about his availability.

After all, following that defeat, manager David Moyes told football.london: “I’ve no idea yet how he is going to be for Thursday yet.”

Talking on The West Ham Way podcast about the latest concerns, though, Ex revealed that the club are optimistic he will play.

He said (0:20): “Obviously Antonio missed the whole of the game against Brentford. He wasn't even on the sub's bench. So people were concerned because he was seen limping at the end of the game on Thursday.

"I don't know 100% that he's guaranteed to be fit for Thursday, but I'm pretty sure that he is. When I asked about this to the club, they said it's typical Antonio, he often limps at the end of games, we're confident he'll be available.

"So hopefully with that in mind, it was the right decision to give him no minutes against Brentford. Because he is so important to us on Thursday, I believe that he should be available.”

Will Michail Antonio play against AZ Alkmaar?

No doubt, the Irons will be desperate to see their £85k-p/w striker fit to start on Thursday. After all, he does 14 goals this season, making him the club's top scorer across all competitions.

And maybe it's no shock to heat this claim that his minor injury scare is quite "typical". Indeed, Antonio has been sidelined frequently in recent seasons, but most of the issues haven't been major, often keeping him out for just a brief period.

Premier League, Everton, Everton news, Everton update, Everton transfers, Everton transfer news, Michail Antonio

With that in mind, perhaps this will be the case once again and the striker will return to the pitch on Thursday night in Europe having only missed a single game.

That would certainly be a huge boost for the Hammers.

Ice-cool Ingram trumps the Billings and Denly show

Unbeaten centuries from Kent’s Sam Billings and Joe Denly counted for nothing as Colin Ingram’s ice-cool unbeaten 95 steered Glamorgan to a thrilling three-wicket win over Kent

Unbeaten centuries from Kent’s Sam Billings and Joe Denly counted for nothing as Colin Ingram’s ice-cool unbeaten 95 steered Glamorgan to a thrilling three-wicket win over Kent in a rain-affected Royal London One-Day Cup south group clash in Canterbury. In a game reduced to 42 overs per side following the loss of 90 minutes to drizzle mid-way through Kent’s innings, Ingram proved the immovable bedrock of the Welsh reply, hitting four fours and six sixes to clinch victory with seven balls to spare.Chasing a revised target of 293 from their 42 overs, Glamorgan openers Jacques Rudolph and David Lloyd took a sensible and pragmatic approach as they pursued at an asking rate of almost seven-an-over.With the floodlights on in relative gloom, the pair played themselves in before pressing the run-rate accelerator toward the end of their nine-over powerplay.Lloyd, the right-hander with an unfeasibly wide stance, was quick to straight-drive Matt Coles, then pulled viciously for another boundary when the Kent paceman dropped short.Rudolph (24) was caught on the sweep at deep square leg from James Tredwell’s second delivery of the day to make it 63 for 1and Tredwell should also have removed Will Bragg without scoring, only for Billings to miss a sharp stumping chance.Lloyd moved to a 48-ball 50 with a pulled four off David Griffiths and Bragg upped the tempo further with a 56-ball half-century with five fours and a six.The pair added 86 before Lloyd (65), in attempting a flat-bat pull against Coles picked out Latham at square leg then, two balls later Bragg (52) was caught at mid-wicket when attempting a reverse lap against Tredwell.Tredwell took a third wicket having Aneurin Donald (9) caught at long-off but Glamorgan’s fifth-wicket partners Ingram and Chris Cooke combined to rekindle the run chase and, with 10 overs required, had reduced their victory target to 86 runs.Ingram, the elegant left-hander, continued to show consummate timing in reaching a 30-ball 50 with three sixes but, with 55 needed Cooke (21) needlessly heaved across the line to be bowled by Coles then, with the target reduced to 36, Graham Wagg (8) was run out by Coles’s under-arm shy to the non-striker’s end after Ingram demanded a single. With three overs remaining Craig Meschede (8) ran himself out attempting two to deep cover, but Griffiths’s over ended with Ingram clubbing four over point and a six into the building site.In the penultimate over, Ingram steered another brace of boundaries to third man leaving Timm van der Gugten to win it.Batting first on a slow pitch that had had the sting taken out of it by Saturday’s thunderstorms, Kent’s openers Tom Latham (9) and Daniel Bell-Drummond posted a half-century first-wicket stand, only for both to fall in quick successionLatham flicked lazily off Wagg to be caught at long leg then Bell-Drummond nicked to the keeper after Michael Hogan got one to seam away using the Canterbury slope.Denly might have joined them back in the hutch when, with his score on 11, he sliced to point where Dean Cosker downed a tough overhead chance.Sam Northeast (26) pulled a length-ball from Van der Gugten straight into the hands of deep mid-wicket just before Denly posted a 64-ball 50 with four fours and a six.Rain arrived just before 1pm, leading to the loss of eight overs, forcing Kent to up their tempo after the 2.30pm re-start.Billings also enjoyed a let off when, on 27, Hogan dropped a skier at mid-off off the bowling off Meschede and took advantage by scampering to a 36-ball 50 with a six off Cosker that flew onto the Kent players’ balcony. The milestones continued when Denly moved to the fifth List A hundred of his career with eight fours and a brace of sixes.Billings continued to show why the Delhi Daredevils invested in his services in the 2016 IPL with a stunning display of clean, inventive hitting. His 53-ball 100 came with a the biggest six of the day off Hogan and took just over an hour. The pair went on to add 170 off 92 deliveries coasting past Kent’s previous List A fourth-wicket record against Glamorgan of 146 set by Alan Ealham and Chris Tavare at Swansea in 1980 as the hosts scored at 14 an over from the final five overs. In the end though, it all proved to no avail.

£120k-p/w Newcastle Man Praised After Premier League Draw

Journalist Lee Ryder has praised Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier after he "dominated" in the club's most recent draw.

What's the latest on Newcastle vs Leicester?

The Magpies managed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years last night after playing Leicester City.

The Foxes are fighting for their lives at the other end of the Premier League table and managed to come away with a point on the day.

Indeed, the match ended 0-0 with Newcastle unable to get on the scoresheet, despite hitting the post three times. That point was still enough to see Eddie Howe's side secure a spot in the top four.

And it seems as though the manager can thank his captain for that as the right-back put in a fine display – as noted by Ryder.

In the ChronicleLive player ratings, the journalist handed Trippier and 8/10 for his efforts and wrote: "Dominated down the right with a ridiculous 162 touches."

What award has Trippier won?

It seems Ryder wasn't the only one to appreciate the defender's efforts with Dominic Scurr signing Trippier's praises in the Shields Gazette player ratings too.

He gave him a 7/10 and said: "Kept Newcastle on the front foot all evening with smart passing down the right. Put some good deliveries into the box which Newcastle ought to have done better with."

And when you look at the stats on SofaScore, you can see why the journalists were impressed. After all, Trippier helped out defensively as he made one clearance, one tackle and of course was part of the backline that kept a clean sheet.

More eye-catching, though, was his attacking involvement as he was immense on the right flank with a whopping 162 touches (39 more than any other player). He delivered 20 crosses (17 more than any other player), completed 113 passes and 15/18 long balls as well as three key passes, with one big chance created.

Newcastle United captain Kieran Trippier.

Having been the first signing under the new ownership group – which has been able to invest in the transfers that have propelled NUFC up the table – it's safe to say Trippier has been a hit.

After all, the £120k-p/w England international was honoured after the game as he was handed the club's 22/23 Player of the Season award.

All in all, not a bad night for the defender with Champions League football secured and personal accolades picked up.

Sussex give Pakistanis a testing day

Sussex’s openers, Luke Wells and Harry Finch, added 212 for the first wicket on the second day of the tour game, underlining how important Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah are to the visitors’ plans in the Tests

Andrew McGlashan at Hove09-Jul-2016
ScorecardIf it was not already clear, the second day at Hove reinforced how crucial Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah are to Pakistan’s hopes in the Test series against England. Sussex’s openers, Luke Wells and Harry Finch, added 212 for the first wicket before they declared 72 runs behind, offering Pakistanis the chance to see how keen they are for a proper game on the final day.Mickey Arthur, Pakistan’s head coach, had billed this match a “bowl-off” to support Amir and Yasir with two places “up for grabs”. The ball did not swing conventionally before lunch and the lines were not consistent which enabled Finch and Wells to make a flyer: the fifty up in the eighth over, 120 in 27 by lunch. In the first session it was a case of who bowled least worse but in the hour before tea Wahab Riaz – probably playing-off against Rahat Ali for a spot unless Pakistan decide on three left-armers – provided a reminder of the danger that can be posed almost out of nowhere when the older ball starts to move.Wells was the first to fall when Wahab, who overstepped 10 times striving for pace, returned for his second spell of the day, his first from the Cromwell Road End, and started to find reverse swing with impressive pace: he will never be a bowler picked for economy, but he has the ability to rattle the batsmen. Wells drove flat-footed at a full delivery, edging behind seven short of a century, then Matt Machan was almost yorked first ball before being beaten by his second delivery.Finch, opening the batting for the first time in first-class cricket, reached his century in Wahab’s next over, when he square-drove his 16th boundary, but two balls later was tempted into driving a full delivery and edged to slip.At the Sea End, Imran Khan – a name that adorned this ground in the late 1970s and 1980s – picked up a brace himself, although they owed a little more to the batsmen’s errors. Machan was lbw after a horrid swipe across the line then Ben Brown drove loosely at his first ball: 212 without loss had become 233 for 4 in the blink of an eye. Imran had earlier struggled for rhythm as he ran up the hill, at one point delivering three consecutive no-balls.Sohail Khan may still be ahead of Imran in the queue for the right-arm seamer’s role having bowled well against Somerset. Although his figures here were expensive, he produced some sturdy spells, especially one during the afternoon when he troubled Wells, having him edge between first and second slip on 62 and then beating him three times in an over.Wells’ innings was a continuation of a strong run of form for the tall left-hander who had made 181 last week against Glamorgan. His fifty off 54 balls included 10 boundaries and seven more followed before Wahab found his edge.Finch, whose previous first-class hundred had come against Leeds/Bradford MCCU at the start of this season, gave one chance on 64 when he drove low to short cover off Zulfiqar Babar, but he was particularly impressive on the front foot. His century also included three sixes, one a cut over the short off-side boundary off Imran.Another issue for Pakistan, which England will be keen to exploit by keeping them in the field, is the lack of a proper fifth-bowling option. Azhar Ali trundled down a few overs of legspin while Asad Shafiq also had an over, but there will be a lot resting on four frontline bowlers. Yasir will have to keep it tight to allow the quicks to rotate; England will want to push Amir into his fourth and fifth spells of a day to test his endurance having played little multi-day cricket since his comeback.Having come in to face a hat-trick ball on first-class debut, Philip Salt played positively after tea before Craig Cachopa was given lbw on the front foot to Zulfiqar to bring the declaration with 24 overs left in the day.For the fourth time on the tour, Mohammad Hafeez reached double figures but not much further when, on 23, he pulled Jofra Archer to deep square leg. As a senior batsman, Pakistan will need Hafeez to lift his game in the Tests to ensure Azhar Ali and Younis Khan are not constantly exposed to the new ball.Shan Masood reached the close unbeaten on 38 but was never entirely convincing. Having given the same top seven both these warm-up matches, Pakistan have set their stall out for the opening Test but, as far as the first-wicket pair are concerned, they will enter more in hope than expectation.

Slot Could Seal First Tottenham Blinder With £35m Gem

While Tottenham Hotspur are yet to confirm the appointment of Feyenoord boss Arne Slot, the latest indications would suggest that the 44-year-old is set to be installed as the club's new manager as a matter of when and not if.

According to 90min, the Dutchman has reportedly informed the Eredivisie outfit that he intends to make the move to north London, with The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare stating that the Lilywhites are readying a "formal approach" for the in-demand tactician.

Barring a dramatic turn of events, it would appear that Slot will be the man to succeed Antonio Conte as the new permanent manager at N17, having only recently claimed title glory with his current club.

One man who was instrumental in that surprise success was midfielder, Orkun Kokcu, with recent reports in the Netherlands claiming that the Turkey international could follow his manager to England this summer.

As per Dutch outlet, 1908.nl, the Lilywhites had seemingly been eyeing a move for the 22-year-old even before discussing a swoop for Slot, with 'initial contacts' said to have taken place regarding the signing of the playmaker – who could command a fee of around €40m (£35m).

Should Spurs sign Kokcu?

If Slot is to be the new man in the dugout, the title-winning coach could well pull off his first masterstroke by ensuring that young Kokcu follows him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the latter man having sparkled during his time in Rotterdam to date.

The Netherlands-born maestro has bagged 12 goals and contributed five assists in 45 games across all fronts this season from his central midfield berth, ensuring that his total tally for the club stands at 59 goal involvements in 174 games.

The 5 foot 9 dynamo has also showcased his ability to feature in a more advanced playmaking berth or on the flanks during his time at the club so far, with that flexibility one potential factor in why Slot will look to "bring in" the youngster if he is to be appointed – as per journalist Marcel van der Kraan.

Man City's Phil Foden

The Dutch football expert also went on to liken Kokcu to Manchester City and England sensation, Phil Foden, stating: "A youth product, let's say similar to Phil Foden at Manchester City, a player who everybody is very keen on, only his position is a bit different.

"He is a midfielder, a playmaker, and he has been the driving force in the team over the last two years."

As Van der Kraan noted, Kokcu typically operates in a deeper-lying role than that of Foden, although ex-Feyenoord boss Jaap Stam has previously spoken of his former asset's ability to "play as [a] No.10 or he can play as a left midfield player" – much like the City star.

That likeness between the pair is also illustrated by their brilliance at driving forward with the ball at their feet, as Kokcu has averaged 2.87 progressive carries per 90 over the last 365 days, as per FBref, while the Englishman has averaged 2.97 for that same metrics.

The Spurs hierarchy would no doubt love to have their own version of the Etihad gem, with Foden – who has now won five league titles during his time under Pep Guardiola – seemingly possessing "frightening" ability, according to teammate John Stones.

As such, if Slot can tempt Kokcu into make a move to England this summer, it could well be a real blinder as far as Spurs are concerned.

Knight's effort comes up short in tight contest

England wicketkeeper Amy Jones and Australian star Ellyse Perry shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 83 as home side Loughborough Lightning beat Western Storm by five runs

England wicketkeeper Amy Jones and Australian star Ellyse Perry shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 83 as home side Loughborough Lightning beat Western Storm by five runs in a thriller, despite Heather Knight’s 74, the highest score in the Kia Super League to date.Jones and Perry came together at a perilous 31 for 3 to share the impressive stand, building a solid platform before accelerating to put Lightning in a great position. A flurry of wickets saw Storm slow the rate down, before an Eve Jones cameo saw Loughborough post 158 for 8 off their 20 overs.Western Storm were looking for a fast start but were pegged back by some tight early bowling from Loughborough. Knight’s excellent knock looked to have given Western Storm the platform to chase down the score, but when she was run out, the game went away from the visitors.”It felt really good and it was about trying to get a partnership together with Ellyse,” Amy Jones said. “Luckily I’d had a couple of opportunities in warm-up games so it was nice to push on a bit and get the win.”Knight was undoubtedly disappointed to fall short. “We just wanted to stay in the game as long as possible but a couple of wickets cost us but we can turn things around quickly and we can get back on track.”Nine runs off the first three balls of the match looked to have given Loughborough a great start, but a clever piece of bowling saw Lightning captain Georgia Elwiss lured out of her crease, to be stumped by New Zealand international Rachel Priest.Storm captain Knight then forced a mistake from one off Loughborough’s overseas stars, grabbing the wicket of Sophie Devine before Anya Shrubsole bowled Dane Van Niekerk after runs had begun to dry up.That brought together the partnership of Jones and Perry, who first consolidated for a period before their expansive range of shots began to show. The England wicketkeeper took the lead racing to 46 off 30 balls, departing to a Priest stumping again off Freya Davies.Perry was then involved in a mix-up that saw Paige Scholfield run out, but by then had taken on the momentum, hitting her 44 off 37 balls before holing out in the deep to Lizelle Lee.Eve Jones smacked a quick-fire 25, launching Georgia Hennessey for a six and then the very next ball, hitting another boundary, before departing to Shrubsole as the innings reached its end.The Western Storm chase wobbled early, as an excellent Powerplay saw Loughborough get the prize wickets of overseas stars Priest and Stafanie Taylor before Knight and Fran Wilson started the rebuilding process.Knight was the aggressor in the partnership of 78 with her England colleague but when Wilson departed, the task got harder, though the composure shown by the Storm skipper, suggested otherwise. However, the match turned when Elwiss got the faintest of touches on a Hennessey straight drive, to leave Knight stranded out of her crease and with it the chances of Western Storm. Sonia Odedra’s impressive spell of 2 for 20 was the pick of the Lightning bowlers, whilst Perry’s final over secured the victory.
