Everton ready to replace £120,000-a-week star with key January signing

Everton know they will have to replace Idrissa Gueye in the near future and a new update has outlined their plans in the January transfer window.

The Blues could potentially be without Gueye for as many as six games in January, due to his involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal.

Not only that, but Everton also need to plan for life without the 36-year-old, with the midfielder out of contract at the Hill Dickinson Stadium at the end of this season.

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye

Gueye signed a one-year extension during the summer, but given his age, there is every chance that the 2025/26 campaign will be his last in a Blues shirt.

Replacing him is going to be a tall order, with the Senegalese such an influential figure at the heart of Everton’s midfield across two different spells with the club, and it looks as though the Merseysiders are preparing for life without him.

Everton eyeing new midfielder in January

According to Football Insider, “both permanent and loan deals will be explored” by Everton in January, as they plan to fill the void left by Gueye with a new midfield signing.

The report also adds that the Blues “have no plans” to offer the popular midfielder a contract extension, as he gradually nears the end of his £120,000-a-week deal, which makes him Everton’s third-highest earner.

This feels like sensible thinking by Everton, with Gueye’s absence in the winter likely to leave a gap, given his ability to cover ground and bite into tackles, even at his current age.

The Blues need to be looking at a similar style of player to come in as his long-term successor, but whoever that is will have a lot to live up to, with James Garner heaping praise on him.

“He’s getting better the older he gets. He’s a calm, assuring head alongside me. I’m still pretty young and still learning the game, and he’s helped me massively.”

It remains to be seen who Everton’s choice of midfielder will be – Real Betis ace Sergi Altimira was reportedly the subject of a bid in the summer – but a permanent move makes more sense than a loan signing, in terms of bringing in a long-term option who is in and around his best years of his career.

ICC, BCCI express 'solidarity' with Afghanistan after withdrawal from Pakistan tri-series

ACB claims several lives were lost in attack in Urgun district, including three local cricketers

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Oct-2025The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has withdrawn the national team from next month’s tri-series in Pakistan following the death of three local cricketers in a cross-border attack in the Urgun district of the country.Following the incident, the ICC and BCCI expressed solidarity with the ACB, who also urged “the implementation of firm and decisive measures against those responsible for this inhumane attack.” Pakistan’s government issued a statement contesting the claims that “cricketers” had died in an “airstrike”.In a post on X on Friday, the ACB claimed several lives had been lost in the attack, including three local cricketers who had been returning home after playing a “friendly” match in Sharana, the capital of Paktika province. “The ACB considers this a great loss for Afghanistan’s sports community, its athletes, and the cricketing family,” it said in a statement.Describing the incident as “tragic”, the ACB said “as a gesture of respect to the victims” it had “decided to withdraw from participating in the upcoming Tri-Nation T20I Series.”

A day after the ACB’s decision, the ICC and BCCI issued statements expressing “solidarity” with the Afghanistan board. “The International Cricket Council (ICC) is deeply saddened and appalled by the tragic deaths of three young and promising Afghan cricketers, Kabeer Agha, Sibghatullah, and Haroon, who lost their lives in a recent airstrike in Afghanistan’s Paktika province.”The three young men had returned home after participating in a friendly cricket match when they were killed in an attack that also claimed the lives of several civilians. The ICC strongly condemns this act of violence that has robbed families, communities, and the cricketing world of three bright talents whose only ambition was to play the sport they loved.”The BCCI said: “The BCCI stands in solidarity with the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), the cricket fraternity, and the families of the departed players during this moment of profound grief and condemns this ghastly and unwarranted attack. The loss of innocent lives, particularly those of promising sportspersons, is deeply distressing and a matter of great concern. The BCCI conveys its heartfelt sympathies to the people of Afghanistan and shares in their pain and loss.”On Saturday evening, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar gave Pakistan’s first official response, in a statement on ‘X’. “Pakistan, a prime victim of cross-border terrorism, rejects the ICC’s selective, biased and premature comment that advances a disputed allegation, as established, that three ‘Afghan cricketers’ died in an ‘airstrike’. The ICC has cited no independent verification to substantiate these claims. Pakistan strongly rejects the characterization and contests the ICC’s claim and call for immediate correction.”Following the statement from the ICC, the ACB issued another statement expressing “sincere gratitude” to the governing body. “The ACB has consistently upheld the principle of keeping sports separate from politics and has maintained this stance within the framework of the ICC. The Afghanistan Cricket Board once again strongly condemns this act of violence. While deeply appreciating the ICC’s expression of solidarity, the ACB urges the implementation of firm and decisive measures against those responsible for this inhumane attack.”The T20I tri-series, between Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, had been arranged by the PCB last month, and was scheduled to be played between November 17-29 in Rawalpindi and Lahore. The tournament would have been the second tri-series involving Afghanistan and Pakistan this year, following their meeting in August-September prior to the Asia Cup. However, it was to be their first in Pakistan. Afghanistan had previously played in the country in the 2023 Asia Cup and earlier this year in the Champions Trophy, without playing against the host nation.Pakistan and Afghanistan had been scheduled to play each other twice in the tournament – on November 17 in the series opener, and again on November 23. Zimbabwe will now take Afghanistan’s place. The tri-series had been finalised at time when the diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan were already deteriorating.

Six ways Ruben Amorim can learn from Oliver Glasner and Crystal Palace in bid to make 3-4-3 work at Man Utd

Ruben Amorim complained earlier this season that his 3-4-3 formation is always to blame whenever Manchester United lose but on the rare occasion they win, his tactics are not credited. The coach's system has been the No. 1 talking point since he took charge of the Red Devils, with many believing it cannot work in the Premier League. But Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is proving otherwise.

Glasner has been playing the same formation as Amorim since he succeeded the beloved Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park in February 2024, with the team sitting 15th in the Premier League. But rather than being the straitjacket that it often seems to be for Amorim's United, the 3-4-3 shape has led to Palace enjoying one of the club's greatest ever spells.

In less than two years in charge he has led Palace to win the FA Cup (their first major trophy), consequentially taking them into Europe for the first time. He has also overseen the club's longest ever unbeaten run, spanning 19 games in all competitions and six months, and won this season's Community Shield. Palace are currently fifth in the Premier League, enjoying their best run in the division and their best season since finishing third in the old First Division in 1990, when they also reached the FA Cup final.

It is quite a different story for Amorim, who last season oversaw United's lowest league finish in 51 years and whose team were incapable of beating 10-man Everton in their last game despite having a one-man advantage for 77 minutes. As United head to south London to face Palace on Sunday, GOAL looks at six things Amorim could learn from Glasner in his long quest to make his formation finally work…

Getty Images SportPick formation based on players

Amorim and Glasner may be the two most famous exponents of 3-4-3 in the modern game but only one of them has made it their hallmark. While Amorim began playing the formation as early as his fourth game in charge of semi-professional side Casa Pia, his very first job, Glasner only started adopting it when he became Eintracht Frankfurt coach as it had worked for his predecessor.

"In my career, I have used every single system," Glasner told . "I got promoted in Austria with a 4-4-2, then we switched to a 3-4-3. In Wolfsburg, we reached the Champions League with a 4-2-3-1. In Frankfurt, they played with three at the back before and it fit the squad. I always look at what system might suit the players we have best. My favourite system is 4-4-2, but do we have the right players for this?"

Amorim's mistake was to land at Old Trafford hell-bent on playing his formation even though the squad he inherited was stacked with traditional wingers and shorn of good full-backs who could become effective wing-backs. Against Everton he stuck with the formation even when the circumstances demanded a tactical tweak, showing a concerning rigidity contrasting with Glasner's pragmatism.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportFocus less on possession

Pep Guardiola's Barcelona made every team obsessed with having lots of possession but the game has shifted back towards a more equal balance in recent years. United's defeat against Everton was the most flagrant example that dominating the ball does not always win you games: they had 70 percent of the ball overall and 75% in the second half.

Palace are showing just what you can do with less of the ball. They rank third-bottom in the Premier League for possession but are fifth in the table. United are ranked eighth for possession but are 10th in the table. Indeed, throughout this season United have tended to get better results when having less of the ball.

They beat Liverpool with 36.5% possession and also had less of the ball when they beat Brighton and Chelsea, remarkably only having 41% of the ball against the Blues despite having a man advantage for most of the first half. The only game they have won while dominating the ball was against Burnley, who have the lowest possession count in the league, while they had marginally more possession when they beat Sunderland (50.2%).

When Amorim's Sporting CP thrashed Manchester City after he had accepted the United job, the coach warned: "United cannot play the way we play, they cannot be so defensive." But that is not the case any more. What United fans want right now is results and to climb up the table. When long-suffering supporters were celebrating their first win at Anfield in a decade, no one in the away end was grumbling about their lack of possession.

Getty Images SportHave a reliable centre-forward

The last time United played Crystal Palace, Jean-Phillipe Mateta gave a clinic in centre-forward play which was juxtaposed by the absurdity of Kobbie Mainoo starting as a false-nine for the Red Devils. It was a game which underlined the importance of having a streetwise, Premier League-tested centre-forward leading the line. But United did not learn any lessons from it.

While Mateta was being touted as a smart option for United in the summer, they instead paid £74m ($98m) for Benjamin Sesko, despite him having the same flaws as Rasmus Hojlund, the player he was replacing after the Dane proved ill-equipped to cope with the demands of the Premier League and the pressure of playing for United. Sesko, who is in the middle of an expected six-week lay off with a knee injury, has scored two goals so far and it says a lot that Amorim opted against starting him against Liverpool and Tottenham, playing Matheus Cunha as a false nine instead. Joshua Zirkzee got his big opportunity against Everton but failed to take it.

Mateta, meanwhile, has scored six goals this season, making him the joint-fourth top scorer in the league. In the last two campaigns he scored a combined 30 goals. No one in United's squad came close to those numbers. Mateta is still not an elite-level striker and it should not be forgotten that in his second season at Palace he started only six league matches, being Hodgson's second-choice behind Odsonne Édouard. He has steadily learned the trade of what it takes to be a Premier League forward and even when he doesn't score he gives his team a clear focal point, something United clearly lack despite spending close to £184m on three strikers since 2023.

Getty Images SportPlay wing-backs on correct wings

Wing-backs are utterly essential to a 3-4-3 system and Amorim has struggled to get a tune out of the men he has chosen to perform the role. Amad Diallo is the one exception as he has been one of the few players to continue to shine over the last year although playing at wing-back does not really suit his strengths.

While Amad has been able to demonstrate his attacking quality as an inverted wing-back and has struck up a promising partnership with Bryan Mbeumo, playing further back than his natural role as a right winger has its pitfalls. His defensive shortcomings were exposed against Nottingham Forest and he is not helped by being forced to defend on his weaker right side.

The same is true of Diogo Dalot although for different reasons. Dalot is naturally right-footed but is often deployed as left-wing-back, meaning he struggles to cause damage going outside defenders and routine goes inside, making it easier to defend against. Gary Neville was furious with Amorim for bringing Dalot on against Everton to replace Patrick Dorgu, while Jamie Carragher previously said of the Portugal international in this position: "He can't beat a man. He's not going to play a clever pass, he's not going to get a cross in."

Glasner has gone for a simpler approach, playing the right-footed Daniel Munoz at right-wing-back and the left-footed Tyrick Mitchell on the opposite flank. Munoz has contributed to 17 Premier League goals since joining Palace in January 2024. Mitchell has 11 goal contributions since the start of the 2023-24 campaign.

The numbers only tell half of the story though: the wing-backs' legs and lungs are a big reason why Glasner's team are so dangerous going forward on the break. Mitchell and Munoz both currently rank in the top five in the Premier League for distance covered, according to OPTA.

Clayton Kershaw Makes Sweet Personal Announcement During Dodgers-Giants Game

It's an extra special Father's Day for Clayton Kershaw.

The Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher shared a special announcement during the Dodgers' game against the San Francisco Giants on Father's Day Sunday—he and his wife, Ellen, are expecting their fifth child.

"We had a gender reveal today," Kershaw said on the ESPN broadcast. "We've got No. 5 coming, we got another girl coming. We got bookend girls to go with our three boys. Today was a very special Father's Day for us."

Since marrying in 2010, Kershaw and Ellen have had four children together—Cali Ann, Charley, Cooper and Chance. They are now expecting their fifth child and second daughter.

It's been an eventful weekend for Kershaw, who wrapped up his sixth start of the season on Saturday. In his start against the Giants, Kershaw pitched seven full innings for the first time since 2023 and allowed three hits, no runs, and one walk. He additionally recorded five strikeouts and earned his second straight win in the Dodgers' 11-5 victory over San Francisco.

“True” – Agent confirms Arsenal want attacker after rumour he’ll ‘soon sign’

Arsenal are believed to be after one club’s standout attacker, with his representative now confirming the Gunners’ interest in signing him.

Arsenal linked with new attackers heading into 2026

Despite having just signed Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and star striker Viktor Gyokeres in the summer — as part of their near-£270 million summer spending spree — links with new attacking options haven’t gone away.

Certain Arsenal forwards currently face an uncertain long-term future, with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard both out of contract in 2027 as things stand, so that could be a key reason why sporting director Andrea Berta is thinking about adding another forward to Mikel Arteta’s ranks next year.

According to some reports, Arsenal have held talks with representatives of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande as the race intensifies for one of Europe’s most exciting teenage talents.

The 19-year-old Ivorian has enjoyed a sensational start to life in Germany, registering 11 goal contributions in his last 15 appearances across all competitions.

His explosive form has attracted elite suitors from across the continent, with Bayern Munich particularly aggressive in their pursuit of his signature, but Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, PSG, Liverpool and Chelsea are also taking an interest.

Arteta says "really special" Arsenal star has been so good in training lately

The Spaniard is thrilled with him.

ByEmilio Galantini 3 days ago

However, given his seismic £88 million price tag, Berta may want to consider alternatives.

The north Londoners are believed to be keen on Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo too, with the Arsenal supporter (by his own admission) available for £65m through a release clause active in early January.

The Ghanaian has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season, making him an enticing prospect for the Gunners.

Juventus sensation Kenan Yildiz, meanwhile, has also attracted admiration from Arsenal amid his fantastic performances in Turin and ongoing contract uncertainty with the Italian giants.

The versatile Turkish forward represents another potential option as Berta continues exploring targets across multiple markets.

That being said, one player may arrive before any of the aforementioned crop.

According to Croatian media sources, Arsenal are ‘expected’ to strike a deal for HNK Rijeka star Toni Fruk, who will ‘soon sign’ for Arteta’s side with talks in ‘full swing’.

Agent confirms Arsenal interest in Toni Fruk

Now, as per his own agent, Andy Bara, that interest in the 24-year-old has now been confirmed.

Bara is quoted telling news outlet 24 Sata that Arsenal do indeed want to sign Fruk, but he also denies any concrete talks or negotiations happening behind-the-scenes right now.

The versatile forward, who can operate both as a number 10 and centre-forward, has been a revelation for Rijeka this season, bagging 10 goals in all competitions already.

Fruk’s performances have also impressed talent-spotters from the likes of AC Milan and Liverpool, with the ex-Fiorentina talent also out of contract in 2027 and potentially available for a bargain fee.

Fruk has also been described as the Croatian National League’s ‘best’ footballer and ‘most valuable’ player (Sport Klub), while others dubbed him a ‘new’ version of Luka Modrić.

Comparisons to the Real Madrid legend are a clear indicator of just how highly-rated he is in that part of Europe, with Rijeka’s talisman now turning heads in the Premier League.

Man City confirm Pep Guardiola absence for 'personal reasons' with assistant coach Kolo Toure to fulfil media duties

Manchester City have announced that head coach Pep Guardiola will skip pre-match press duties ahead of a Premier League clash with Crystal Palace due to a "personal matter". Guardiola was due to face the assembled media on Friday, but his place in that hot seat will be filled by assistant manager Kolo Toure – with the Blues’ talismanic boss set to be back in the dugout at Selhurst Park.

Title challenge: Man City chasing down Arsenal

City are confident that the issue will not impact plans for a trip to South London. Guardiola is expected to take his place on the bench as usual after naming a team that he hopes can pick up three more points in an ongoing title bid.

A morale-boosting 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in midweek Champions League competition has helped to raise spirits in the City camp. They are now just two points adrift of table-topping Arsenal – who play host to rock bottom Wolves on Saturday evening.

Any slip up from the Gunners would leave the door open for City to climb to the summit, as they prepare to tackle high-flying Palace on Sunday. Guardiola heads into that game aware that his record against Eagles boss Oliver Glasner is not the best – with an FA Cup final defeat suffered against the Austrian tactician last season.

AdvertisementGettyWhy Toure is facing the press instead of Lijnders

Guardiola will, however, have City ready for another tough test in the English capital. That is despite being forced to miss a press conference due to issues in his private life. He has left matters in the capable hands of Toure.

Pep Lijnders, who once worked alongside Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, boasts more experience in the coaching department – and is accustomed to facing the media – but was also unavailable on Friday due to a scheduled day off.

Toure promotion: Guardiola freshened up backroom staff

Toure is speaking as the public face of City for the first time since being promoted to a first-team role over the summer. The 44-year-old represented the Blues and Arsenal – winning Premier League titles with both – in his playing days.

He began his coaching career as an assistant to ex-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers at Celtic, before following him to Leicester. An unsuccessful spell was taken in as manager of Wigan Athletic during the 2022-23 campaign, with that stint lasting just nine games as no wins were picked up.

Former Ivory Coast international Toure – who played alongside his brother Yaya at City – returned to the Etihad Stadium as an assistant to U18s manager Oli Reiss in 2024. He was then allowed to bridge the gap between youth and first-team ranks in July 2025.

City’s academy director Thomas Krucken told the of that decision, as Guardiola freshened up his backroom staff: "Before the season starts, we sat together with Txiki [Begiristain], Hugo [Viana], the head of coaching, Kolo – he is a very important part now because he knows the players really well – and there are a core of four players training. The EDS train every day next to the first team so it's easy for us and the players Pep needs, he gets.

"The door to the first team is always open. I think we have a fantastic interface. Kolo is an important part but also Pep Lijnders has huge experience over a period of his seasons at Liverpool and before. He is an expert in working with young players. We have a regular meeting with Hugo, Pep Lijnders and Kolo, the head of coaching Jose [Luis Rueda] who is our head of Individual Player Development."

GettyGuardiola at Man City: Win ratio and trophy wins

Former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss Guardiola has been in charge of City since 2016. He has taken in 556 games at the game and boasts a win ratio of 70.5 per cent. The Catalan passed 1,000 matches as a manager this season.

He has overseen six Premier League title triumphs, with one of those – in 2022-23 – forming part of a historic Treble. In total, he has won 18 trophies with City and is tied to a contract through to the summer of 2027.

Every Batter Dealt in Cubs-Astros Kyle Tucker Trade Homered in Same Game

The Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros were involved in a big MLB trade back in December that sent three-time All-Star Kyle Tucker to Chicago, while infielder Isaac Paredes, pitcher Hayden Wesneski and top infield prospect Cam Smith were dealt to Houston.

These players all faced each other this weekend while the Cubs are visiting Daikin Park. And, in some sort of fantastical way, the three batters dealt in the trade all hit home runs in the same game on Saturday night.

Smith shot off the first homer in the third inning, giving the Astros a 2-1 lead at the time. The Cubs responded in a major way in the fourth inning, as three players homered to add to the tally of seven total runs. The last Cub to homer in the fourth inning was Tucker, who has been on fire this season and specifically while visiting Houston. He was a triple short of the cycle on Saturday night.

Paredes finished off the prophecy, of sorts, in the eighth inning when he hit a 328-foot homer to give the Astros their third and final run of the night. Tucker had the upper hand in the matchup as the Cubs won 12-3.

What a full circle moment for all three players.

Analyzing Which Starters on the Trade Market Can Swing a World Series

Just about every contending team will have added a bullpen arm before the 6 p.m. ET trade deadline hits Thursday. Baseball, especially October baseball, is increasingly about bullpenning. Want to know how much differently postseason baseball is played from just a decade ago? Here you go:

The scarcity of starting pitchers who can win a postseason game, not just manage it by facing 18 batters or fewer, is what makes the deadline so fascinating. Swing-and-miss relievers are easy to find. Trading for an impact starter is much harder.

Last season, 11 starting pitchers were traded in the week before the deadline. Only four of them started a postseason game: Alex Cobb, Zach Eflin, Jack Flaherty and Frankie Montas. They combined for nine starts, with their teams going 4–5 in those games. Flaherty was a difference-maker for the world champion Dodgers. They went 3–2 when Flaherty started.

Many teams are looking for the next Flaherty, most likely the Cubs, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Astros and Blue Jays. I’ll give them some help in the search.

Below you will find the top starting pitchers most likely to be traded. I include whether the likely price of acquisition is worth the trade and what the acquiring team needs to do to make the deal work .

Seth Lugo is off the board after signing an extension with Kansas City. I don’t believe it’s likely the Twins will trade Joe Ryan, or the Nationals will trade MacKenzie Gore. I am looking only at pitchers likely to start one of the first three games of a playoff series, so while Charlie Morton of the Orioles, Andrew Heaney of the Pirates and Adrian Houser of the White Sox are likely to get moved, I don’t put them in the top tier. Happy shopping.

Sandy Alcantara, Miami Marlins

Worth it? No.

The Fixes

1. Get the four-seam fastball higher

Alcantara throws his four-seamer about as often as the sinker. The four-seamer is a much bigger problem, especially when compared to his last full season. Like Spencer Strider, another post-surgery power pitcher, he doesn’t have that A+ top-rail heater yet. And when you miss slightly lower in the zone, those heaters get hit.

2. Get in the zone more

Alcantara is throwing his fewest strikes since 2020 and allows a career-worst .975 OPS when he falls behind.

3. Learn to hold runners

Basestealers are 24-for-24 against Alcantara this year and 65-for-72 over his past three seasons. That’s a problem that’s not going to be fixed within two months.

The bottom line: Alcantara threw a gem his last time out (no earned runs in seven innings vs. San Diego) with his best four-seam velocity of the year, so it’s tempting. But he’s been inconsistent with the lowest strikeout rate and highest hard-hit rate of his career. Maybe he is just turning a corner. The problem with a trade for Alcantara is you must pay at an ace valuation for him even though he is not yet back at that level. Miami is in no hurry to trade him.

Edward Cabrera, Miami Marlins

Worth it? Yes.

The Fixes

1. Drop him into a pennant race and see how he does

Cabrera has elite spin on two breaking pitches, a changeup he throws to both sided hitters and two fastballs in the 96–97 mph range. He is 27 years old with no worries about innings limits. He has thrown 95 innings this year (including two minor league starts after a spring training blister problem), well short of his season high of 128.

2. Don’t ask too much of him

Like a lot of young pitchers, Cabrera is learning on the major league level how to pitch three times around a lineup. His OPS by times through a lineup: .691 first time, .615 second and .858 the third.

And don’t shorten his rest. The Marlins asked him three times to pitch on the fifth day. The result: 0–2 with a 5.06 ERA.

3. Emphasize getting ahead

He has cut his walk rate, but his strike percentage (62.9%) remains below average. He has so many weapons he can dominate if he controls count leverage more.

The bottom line: Cabrera missed two months last year with a shoulder impingement, which is not a surprise considering his high three-quarters release that requires head tilt to get his arm up and through. He has since lowered his release point and arm angle a bit, which appears to create less stress on his shoulder. With four more years of control, he is a great target for a team willing to make a challenge trade in exchange for a controllable position player, such as Jarren Duran of the Red Sox or Mark Vientos or Ronny Mauricio of the Mets.

Zac Gallen, Arizona Diamondbacks

Worth it? Yes.

The Fixes

1. Lose the cutter

Gallen has more than doubled his cutter use this season, to 7%. It has not worked out well. He throws it to righthanded and lefthanded hitters and too often leaves it glove side and neither low nor high enough, which means it finds barrels. Batters are hitting .405 and slugging .811 against the pitch. Only Jackson Rutledge and Jameson Taillon have higher slugs against a cutter thrown at least 125 times.

2. Tighten the knuckle curveball, especially with runners on

Gallen’s problems this year are almost entirely due to mistakes with runners on. There’s nothing wrong with Bases Empty Gallen:

But look what happens when Gallen pitches out of the stretch—each 2025 mark below qualifies as his career worst, and only Alcantara and Antonio Senzatela of the Rockies have worse opponents’ OPS this year (minimum 200 batters faced) with runners on.

What’s going on here? His release point doesn’t change. His velocity doesn’t change. He does throw more knuckle curveballs this year with runners on (31%) than he did last year (26%). And mistakes with those pitchers are killing him. Gallen is throwing too many strike-to-strike curves in key spots when he used to be a master at getting hitters to chase his strike-to-ball curves. The heat map and stats of his curves with runners on plainly tell the story:

The bottom line: Overall, Gallen’s curveball has dropped from a +15 run value pitch last year to a -4 run value this year. Somebody will have an ace on their hands if they simply get Gallen’s curveball close to where it has been throughout his career, especially out of the stretch. It’s worth the bet.

Dylan Cease, San Diego Padres

Worth it? Unlikely.

The Fix

1. Tinker with his pitch mix

Cease throws 46.2% sliders, the most by far of any starter in MLB. Next is Jacob deGrom of the Rangers at 38.6%. Cease throws hard and has great spin, but Cease has a 4.79 ERA because, like Gallen, he is making mistakes at critical times. He allows a .209 average with the bases empty but a .295 mark with runners on and .301 in high leverage spots.

The bottom line: Cease can be inconsistent, but he has the stuff to dominate a postseason game. A Cease trade is all about a likely high cost more than his talent. He is eligible for free agency after this season. The Padres don’t need to trade him, but they would consider it if the haul were enough to improve their 2026 team and it would be clearly better than the talent from a compensation draft pick.

Mitch Keller, Pittsburgh Pirates

Worth it? Yes.

The Fix

1. Get him some runs

‘The Pirates have scored two runs or less in 14 of his 21 starts. Keller is pitching just as well as Kevin Gausman of the Toronto Blue Jays—only with much less run support.

The bottom line: Keller is throwing well (3–0, 2.03 ERA in his past five starts), he can pitch on the fifth day (he’s done it eight times), he takes the ball deep into games (16 starts of six innings or more) and he’s signed through 2028. Best of all? He proved his toughness. When the Pirates scored two runs or fewer for him in nine straight starts, Keller kept grinding and pitching well without complaint.

Merrill Kelly, Arizona Diamondbacks

Worth it? Yes.

The Fix

1. Just put this veteran in a pennant race and let him respond

Kelly posted a 2.83 ERA in his final 10 starts for Arizona in 2023, postseason included. He is a consummate pitch-maker who can beat lineups three times through by mixing his six pitches. His changeup and cutter are elite.

A team would be getting Kelly at the right time. He is allowing the lowest batting average of his career (.206) and is on a hot streak (1.82 ERA in his past four starts). He turns 37 in October, which may sound risky, but he has clean mechanics and is not a max-effort pitcher.

The bottom line: Kelly is the Jack Flaherty of this deadline: a worry-free rental without a huge cost. He is battle-tested and plug-and-play.

No One Knew Javy Báez's Homer Was Long Gone Quicker Than A.J. Pierzynski

The Tigers' offense woke up just in time to avoid elimination as they scored all nine of their runs unanswered to secure a 9–3 victory over the Mariners in Game 4 of their American League Divisional Series. Javy Báez, one of the few Detroit batters to show any signs of life this postseason, put things out of reach by blasting a two-run homer on a hanging slider that sent Comerica Park into a frenzy.

It was a no-doubter from the moment it left his bat, but Fox Sports' A.J. Pierzynski still deserves credit for putting it on the board before Baez had even completed his swing. Listen to him nail the call in record time.

"And now, two more" Pierzynski said before the ball had even sailed over the infield.

Even better, he quickly got out of the way for his partner Adam Amin to narrate the moment with some context, saying this was Báez's first playoff homer in eight years. That one came as a member of the World Series-winning Cubs.

Pierzynski has seen a lot of baseball and knows what a pitch like that can result in, but still some incredible speed on the processing there.
