Everton make bid to sign "wonderful" talent who’s perfect for Harrison

Everton's financial problems have been evident this season, with the club charged for multiple breaches of the Premier League's PSR rules which have resulted in an eight-point deduction.

The subsequent punishments have seen boss Sean Dyche operate on a shoestring budget for large periods, often having to rely on outgoings before making any signings.

The Toffees may also have to offload some more key first-team members this summer to prevent another breach next season, with Jarrad Branthwaite the most likely to depart given the rumoured interest from Manchester United.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

However, midfielder Amadou Onana could also be sold during the summer transfer window, the Toffees demanding a £60m fee to part ways with the Belgian talent.

He's undoubtedly a top talent with huge potential, but should he depart, the fanbase shouldn't worry, as the Toffees have already identified a ready-made replacement who can take one Everton player to the next level.

Everton interested in signing Italian talent this summer

According to Di Marzio via Sport Witness, Everton have made an offer for Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove in an attempt to bolster Dyche’s midfield ahead of next season.

The outlet states that Bove has the opportunity to leave his current club this summer after 31 Serie A appearances for Roma last season, with Leeds United also interested in the youngster.

However, the Toffees will undoubtedly have the edge over Daniel Farke’s side after his side failed to win promotion in the play-off final against Southampton last month.

Leeds’ subsequent defeat has allowed Everton to secure the services of Jack Harrison for another season, with The Athletic reporting that the winger is set for another loan move to Goodison Park next season.

Whilst he produced an underwhelming goal return, scoring just three goals in his 29 Premier League appearances, Bove’s potential arrival alongside the 27-year-old could allow him to have a more successful second stint on Merseyside.

Why Bove is perfect for Harrison at Everton

Although he’s only a couple of years into his professional career, Bove has made a huge impact on Roma’s first team making 92 appearances for his boyhood club since his debut back in 2020.

Edoardo Bove in action for Roma in the Europa League.

He’s demonstrated excellent all-rounder qualities, with former boss José Mourinho dubbing the Italian youngster as “wonderful” during his time in charge at the Stadio Olimpico.

However, during the 2023/24 season, he produced some excellent stats that would play perfectly into the hands of the returning Harrison, allowing the attacker to flourish under Dyche next campaign.

Everton's loan forward Jack Harrison.

The 22-year-old has averaged three tackles per 90 in his 31 Serie A appearances during the 2023/24 season, as well as 1.1 blocks, with Bove very reliable at regaining possession for his side.

However, he’s just as impressive with the ball at his feet, achieving an 83% pass completion rate, with an average of 4.5 progressive passes, demonstrating his excellent ability to play the ball forward and create opportunities for the likes of Harrison.

Bove has also averaged 1.1 progressive carries per 90 for Roma, with the midfielder more than capable of leading a transition up the pitch after excelling defensively – a real key component to Everton’s philosophy in recent years.

Whilst it’s unknown how much the Toffees have bid for the 22-year-old or whether he’d be interested in a move to Goodison, he’d certainly be a superb addition who has the ability to transform Dyche’s midfield.

He’s the perfect player for Everton’s system, with the potential arrival of Bove an exciting prospect for the club. He’s an immediate upgrade on the current crop of talent, whilst also providing the opportunity to make a profit down the line boosting their PSR standing.

ICC chairperson appointment – October 18 deadline for candidates to file nominations

However, the ICC has not disclosed how the eventual winner will be declared

Nagraj Gollapudi12-Oct-2020Nearly four months after Shashank Manohar stepped down, the ICC has set the ball rolling on picking its next chairman. October 18 is the deadline for potential candidates to file the nominations and an appointment is expected to be made before the end of the year. The candidates will need to be seconded by at least one current ICC board director to be eligible to contest the election. The ICC has not disclosed how the eventual winner will be declared, though. Incidentally that was the sticking point and the reason behind the ICC board failing to agree upon a process to elect Manohar’s successor. On July 2, the ICC board had said it would finalise within a “week” the process to accept nominations. Despite several meetings in the past few months, the ICC board remained severely divided. As per the ICC’s constitution, any present or former director who has attended at least one board meeting is eligible to run for chairman. ICC directors are each allowed to nominate one candidate, and nominees with the support of two or more directors are eligible to contest an election. The election process is being overseen by the Independent Chairman of the ICC Audit Committee and can vary every election. In 2016, when Manohar took charge for the first time, he was elected through a secret ballot. Two years later, he was the sole nominee and was re-elected unanimously without a vote.On his way out, Manohar himself had attempted to find a successor as a unanimous choice, but failed. Consequently the ICC board agreed to appoint Imran Khwaja as the interim chairman. It could not be confirmed whether the votes would be cast via a secret ballot and whether the eventual winner would be picked based on two-third majority or just a simple one. For any resolution to be approved, the ICC constitution currently requires a two-thirds majority, or a minimum of 11 votes. During the deliberations recently some of the ICC board directors wanted that to be changed to simple majority. The ICC board comprises 17 directors: 12 Full Members, three directors representing the Associates, and the chairman (Khwaja is one of the Associate representatives as well as interim chair, currently), the ICC chief executive officer (Manu Sawhney) and an independent woman director in Indra Nooyi. The CEO, though, does not have a vote.

FA approach Pep Guardiola over England manager's job as Man City boss emerges as 'standout option' to replace Gareth Southgate

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has reportedly been approached by the FA about becoming England's next manager.

According to The Times, the FA made informal contact with Guardiola at the start of the season as they attempt to identify Gareth Southgate's permanent replacement. The governing body are considering other candidates as well, but the City boss would be the "standout option" should he decide to leave the Etihad Stadium when his contract expires at the end of this season.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager hasn't replied to the FA about the role, but he's expected to make a decision regarding his future in the next few weeks. City, unsurprisingly, are keen for Guardiola to stay and enter a 10th season with the club.

Guardiola certainly meets the criteria outlined by the FA in their job advertisement for the role. A manager with "significant experience of English football, with a strong track record delivering results in the Premier League and/or leading international competitions" is desired, along with someone "experienced in successfully identifying, managing and developing English-qualified players".

WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

Guardiola discussed his future on Italian TV show Che Tempo Che Fa on Sunday, saying: "Leaving City? It's not true, I haven't decided yet. And it is not even true that I will be the next England coach. If I had decided I would say it… I don't know either, anything can happen."

Ratcliffe must axe Man Utd ace who earns 4x more than Branthwaite

Now that Erik ten Hag will remain the manager of Manchester United, Sir Jim Ratcliffe can start to put his transfer plans into place.

A striker is wanted, as well as a right-winger, but the position with the most priority is at centre half, with Jarrad Branthwaite seemingly being the main target.

In the last 48 hours, it’s been reported that the Red Devils have agreed personal terms with the England international, with the next step being an agreement with Everton.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a current United player who earns four times more than Branthwaite, despite failing to justify his salary on the field.

Luke Shaw’s Man Utd career

Almost a decade ago, Man United signed 18-year-old Luke Shaw for £30m, making him one of the most expensive teenagers at the time.

The highly-rated left-back impressed during the 2013/14 season at boyhood club Southampton, starting 35 times as they finished eighth.

However, his first campaign at Old Trafford was ruined by injuries, with him missing 31 matches through four separate setbacks.

His second year in Manchester was supposed to be a fresh start where he had the opportunity to develop into the star he promised, but a tibia and fibula fracture in September saw him miss the entire season.

Luke Shaw’s salary at Man United

Unfortunately, injuries have been the story of his United career, making him known for being an unreliable player who’s unable to string a run of games together.

Sadly, Shaw spent most of last season on the sidelines, missing 34 games across all competitions, in what was an incredibly frustrating period.

Luke Shaw

The number 23 made just 12 starts in the Premier League, but it’s looking likely that he will feature for England at the European Championship in Germany.

Yet, what’s even more disappointing, is just how important and brilliant Shaw is when he’s on the field, with football creator Liam Canning even labelling him “phenomenal.”

Rasmus Hojlund

*Jarrad Branthwaite*

£35k

Nonetheless, despite what Shaw can bring to the team when he plays, the sheer lack of reliability and availability makes his £150k-per-week salary seem way too high.

This equates to £7.8m-per-year, without even adding on the fact that the 28-year-old earns £2.6m extra in bonuses per season.

Even though Shaw isn’t one of the highest earners at the Red Devils, his wage is much higher than that of players who offered a lot more last season, such as Diogo Dalot, Rasmus Hojlund, and Alejandro Garnacho.

However, it’s the fact that he earns four times more than Branthwaite that’s rather shocking, especially considering the quality that the centre-back possesses.

Furthermore, Shaw still has three years left on his current contract, and given his injury record, it may be best to move on from the former Saints ace, and United’s interest in signing a new left-back this summer indicates Ratcliffe has a similar opinion.

John Reid, New Zealand's captain in their first Test win, dies at 92

Former ICC Match Referee was also oldest living Test cricketer from New Zealand before his passing

Sreshth Shah14-Oct-2020John Reid, the former New Zealand captain, selector of the national team, ICC match referee and the 1959 Cricketer of the Year, has died in Auckland at the age of 92 years and 133 days. Before his passing, he was the fifth oldest living Test cricketer, and the oldest from New Zealand.Reid made his debut for New Zealand against England in Manchester in 1949. He played 58 Test matches and scored 3,428 runs before retiring in 1965. One of his six hundreds came in the second innings of the Christchurch Test against England in 1963, where he scored 100 out of New Zealand’s innings total of 159. That total still stands as a record for the lowest innings score to feature a hundred. An allrounder who bowled fast-medium, Reid took 85 Test wickets and also was a handy wicketkeeper, standing behind the stumps in the final Test of his debut 1949 series against England.Reid, who gave up on dreams of being a rugby player due to a heart condition, was New Zealand’s captain in their first-ever Test win, against West Indies in 1956, which came in the country’s 45th game, 26 years after their first. Three years later, he touched glory on tour in South Africa in the 1961-62 season, scoring 1915 runs with seven centuries, which also included New Zealand’s first away Test win, coming under his captaincy. He was also involved in the lowest innings total in Tests, when New Zealand were dispatched for 26 by England at Eden Park in 1955. “You can’t really explain it,” he told ESPNcricinfo in 2009. “In the first innings I got 73, and we got them out for 246. And then we score 26.”His success as New Zealand captain – who he led 34 times – eventually saw him captain the Rest of the World XI that toured England in 1965 with Sir Garfield Sobers as vice-captain and Charlie Griffith, Wes Hall, Hanif Mohammad and Rohan Kanhai playing under him. Overall, he scored 16,128 first-class runs at an average of 41.35 and 39 hundreds with the bat, and with the ball took 466 first-class wickets at an average of 22.20. He also had seven stumpings. His career-best 296 – with 35 fours and 15 sixes – for Northern Districts held the record for most sixes in a first-class innings for more than three decades until Andrew Symonds broke it with his 16 sixes for Gloucestershire. While Reid was Test captain, he was also New Zealand’s selector. After his retirement, he briefly coached in South Africa but returned to New Zealand and became an ICC match referee between 1993 and 2002, officiating in 50 Tests and 98 ODIs. After that he was appointed president of New Zealand Cricket in 2003.For his contributions to the sport in New Zealand, a gate at the Basin Reserve cricket ground in Wellington bears his name. Reid’s son Richard played nine ODIs between 1988 and 1991. Reid’s health was in decline after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2013. After Reid’s death, the oldest living Test cricketer from New Zealand is Trevor McMahon (aged 90 and 341 days). McMahon played five Tests in 1955-56, and Reid, too, featured in all those games.

Sky Sports: Ipswich in advanced talks to sign "fabulous" £20,000-p/w player

After spending the early passages of the off-season fighting to keep Kieran McKenna at the club, Ipswich Town can now look towards the transfer window as they enter advanced talks for a new signing.

Tractor Boys prepare for life in the Premier League

The latest rumours out of Portman Road have seen Ipswich linked with a move for a number of new defensive players. Hull City's Jacob Greaves is one name linked with a move to the Tractor Boys with the centre-back seemingly destined to be playing Premier League football next season.

Ipswich could smash transfer record to sign star who's perfect for McKenna

Ipswich Town could show they mean business moving up to the Premier League with this record purchase.

ByKelan Sarson Jun 25, 2024

Joining Greaves on McKenna's wishlist is fellow centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers. The current Celtic man has attracted interest from fellow topflight sides West Ham United and Fulham meaning that Ipswich may have a fight on their hands in order to land the USA international.

With a defender clearly high on the Tractor Boys' list of priorities, the club have now entered the final stages of negotiations to get a proven Premier League defender without needing to spend a penny on transfer fees.

Ipswich enter advanced talks for English free agent

As reported on Sky Sports, Ipswich have entered advanced talks with the representatives of free agent Ben Johnson. The 24-year-old was most recently on the books at West Ham, however the defender rejected multiple contract offers from the Hammers in the search for more regular game time.

Currently commanding a weekly wage of £20,000, this would be the only fee that the Tractor Boys would have to fork out in order to get their man.

Johnson rose through the youth ranks with West Ham before going on to make 109 senior appearances with the East London outfit. The right-back picked up the Hammers' Young Player of the Season award back in 2022 and was also part of the squad that won the UEFA Conference League in 2023.

West Ham's Ben Johnson

Whilst making just 14 appearances in the Premier League last season, Johnson was still able to show that he was more than capable of performing at the highest level. The fullback shone as a progressive force ranking highly for successful take-ons and progressive carries.

Despite struggling for consistent minutes at the London Stadium, Johnson has long been regarded as a quality asset to his side. Speaking when Johnson filled the void for an injured Vladimír Coufal back in October 2021 then-boss David Moyes waxed lyrical about the defender, telling the press:

“I actually thought young Ben Johnson, when you think that we’ve been with a couple of the right-backs recently, I think Ben Johnson has had three games this week, and I thought he was fabulous.”

With the Tractor Boys preparing for life in the Premier League, McKenna's men could do a lot worse than a player with proven top flight quality and plenty of room to improve.

VVS Laxman: T Natarajan could be India's 'X-factor' bowler in T20 World Cup

The Sunrisers Hyderabad mentor says the left-armer has plenty of other variations apart from the yorker

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Nov-2020T Natarajan is only on his first international tour, but VVS Laxman, his mentor at Sunrisers Hyderabad, sees him as a potential X-factor player during India’s T20 World Cup campaign at home in October 2021. Laxman believes Natarajan’s left-arm angle and ability to bowl at the death separates him from the rest of India’s pace options.”With the T20 World Cup scheduled next year – if you look at the Indian team, it requires someone good at the death,” Laxman told . “It is great to see the likes of Mohammed Shami and Navdeep Saini bowl with such confidence in the death. Natarajan being a left-armer will be the X-factor.”From not playing a single game for the Sunrisers in IPL 2019 to getting picked for India, Natarajan’s rise has been remarkable. Having plotted and planned with David Warner, his IPL captain, he could now be lining up against him in Australia. The reason why Natarajan has been talked about so highly is his ability to hit the blockhole. Natarajan learned to bowl the yorker while playing tennis-ball cricket in his hometown Salem, when he realised the only way to prevent the soft ball from losing pace after hitting the clay surfaces he played on was to go full. The delivery has now brought him widespread acclaim.Natarajan bowled 71 yorkers in IPL 2020, the most in the tournament as per ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball data. The second bowler on that list, Kartik Tyagi, only sent down 28.Overall, Natarajan picked up 16 wickets in the IPL and finished with an economy rate of 8.02, which is impressive considering 131 of the 377 balls he bowled during the tournament came in the death (last four) overs.”He has been doing well right from the practice matches before the IPL began in the UAE,” Laxman said. “The kind of confidence level he showed right from the start was amazing.”That is the reason why we gave him the chance ahead of Khaleel Ahmed and once Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) was ruled out with an injury, he became an important cog in the attack.”While the yorker was his calling card, Laxman believes Natarajan has many other variations too. “Natarajan was always known for those yorkers – even in the TNPL (Tamil Nadu Premier League). But, I must say he’s got a lot of variations which he didn’t use in the IPL. He has a sharp bouncer, slower one, offcutter, and has the wicket-taking ability with the new ball.”Essentially, Natarajan has the mindset and the confidence of executing yorkers which we generally believe to be the toughest to deliver. And, he has done consistently and exceedingly well through the IPL, the pick of them being the dismissal of RCB’s AB de Villiers under pressure.”Natarajan’s rise is remarkable because it’s unusual for the selectors to pick an uncapped 29-year-old. The last two fast bowlers to make their international debuts for India after 29 were S Aravind in 2015 and Pankaj Singh in 2014. Prior to that, you’ll have to go back to 1994, when Bhupinder Singh Snr. made his ODI debut, and then all the way back to 1958, when Ghulam Guard played the first of his two Tests.”Natarajan is a hard-working cricketer who never missed a training session and is always wanting to work on his skills to be a much better bowler every day,” Laxman said. “He has been doing really well in the TNPL, he was part of Kings XI Punjab, he did well consistently for Tamil Nadu in Ranji Trophy.”He didn’t get too many opportunities in SRH (in 2018 and 2019) because of the likes of Siddarth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar being the frontline bowlers.”

The confirmation of Tuchel's arrival comes just over a week after it was reported that the German was in the frame to replace Erik ten Hag at United. The Dutch coach is under fire once again amid their rough start to the season and club chiefs are said to have discussed the prospect of bringing in Tuchel.

WHAT TUCHEL SAID

Tuchel, however, says he was captivated by the FA's approach as he explained why he was convinced to take the Three Lions job.

"The idea and the way John [McDermott, technical director] and Mark [Bullingham, chief executive] presented it was very fast and confidential. It was very straightforward, it was a decision for this job and not against anything else," he said at a press conference.

"They made it clear it's about football and that got me excited. I wasn't sure this was the job for me because the schedule is very different. Everton chiefs believe £9,000 per week youngster wants to join in £16m deal

Everton have reached an agreement over the signing of a "dynamic" player who wants to join the club, with reliable journalist Paul Joyce saying a £16m deal is in place and sharing details on the move on Tuesday morning.

Everton transfer news

The Blues have been linked with lots of possible new signings of late, one of which is Hull City youngster Jaden Philogene, who is fresh off the back of an impressive season at the Championship club. The 22-year-old scored 12 goals and chipped in with six assists in the competition in 2023/24, and is seen as a primary target for Sean Dyche.

Meanwhile, Lyon and Republic of Ireland centre-back Jake O'Brien has also been backed to seal a summer move to Everton, as the Merseysiders look to make up for the potential loss of Jarrad Branthwaite to Manchester United, in a deal that could easily go through this summer despite the recent low ball bids.

Jake O'Brien for Lyon.

Former Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez is also being spoken about as an option for the Blues ahead of next season, possibly even coming in regardless of whether Branthwaite stays or not. With James Tarkowski now in his 30s, the Colombian could be viewed as a long-term successor and immediate added depth at the heart of the defence.

Hellas Verona full back/winger Jackson Tchatchoua is another rumoured option for Everton, as they look to bring in more attacking flair on top of the already-signed Iliman Ndiaye. A £7m offer could be enough to prise the 22-year-old away from the Serie A club.

"Dynamic" ace wants to join Everton

Taking to X on Tuesday morning, Joyce claimed that Everton have reached an agreement over the signing of Hull attacker Philogene, with a £16m move to Goodison Park close to being completed.

Perhaps more importantly however, the reporter reveals that those at Goodison Park believe the player wants to join the Toffees, which is a massive boost given there is still interest from the likes of West Ham and Crystal Palace.

"Everton have an agreement in place with Hull City for Jaden Philogene. Bid in the region of £16m made as per others. Everton believe the player wants to join them. Competition from other clubs but Everton positive."

Philogene has the potential to be a fantastic signing for Everton, arriving as a gifted young player with his best years ahead of him, but also having the talent to hit the Premier League by storm from the off.

The Englishman's aforementioned numbers show that he is capable of providing end product at a good rate, and that could only go up another gear being surrounded by superior players than at Hull. Former manager at Stoke City, Michael O'Neill, has heaped praise on him in the past, saying: "(Philogene) is a good player, he’s getting sharp, he’s dynamic and he does a lot of work off the ball as well. The other thing we like about him is that he’s brave; he puts himself in dangerous situations."
