The legspinner became available after he was left out of South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jun-2018Imran Tahir will add another team to his vast roster of overseas sides after signing with Durham for the Vitality T20 Blast.Tahir became available after he was left out of South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka with the South African selectors opting to take the chance to explore their spin-bowling options before next year’s World Cup.With such a prolific T20 record under his belt – he averages 21.77 in the format with an economy of 7.20 – it is little surprise he has been snapped up.Durham head coach Jon Lewis said: “We wanted to invest in a top-quality player to improve our white ball squad and we feel that Imran demonstrates our ambition to compete in the T20 format.”We were keen to strengthen our squad with an experienced big-game player, who will also be able to help our talented youngsters and look forward to welcoming him to Emirates Riverside.”He is one of the best leg spinners in the world and will bring a different dimension to our game.””I’m really excited to be heading to Durham for the Vitality Blast,” Tahir said. “I always enjoy playing in England and hope that my previous international and county experience can help make an impact.

The Red Dragons kept no stone unturned to force a result at the SToK Racecourse but were left frustrated by a 0-0 stalemate thanks to a resolute Harrogate defence. And McClean's booking further soured the evening for Phil Parkinson who could have seen his men go level on points with Mansfield Town had they bagged all three on Tuesday evening.

McClean headed into this match with nine yellow cards already in his kitty and the midfielder had to tread with caution during the 90 minutes. However, a moment of carelessness saw him penalised for a tug on Levi Sutton, which forced the referee to book him for the 10th team this season, leading to his two-game suspension.

DID YOU KNOW?

McClean would have had his card count reset after the Harrogate clash, which was the 37th match of the League Two season. However, he could not hold on for the 17 minutes before full-time, instead committing an unlawful tackle that sees him on the sidelines for the next two matches.

Leeds: Off-field talks to extend two new deals; 49ers seem to be impressed

Leeds United look to be making progress off the pitch and are lining up a couple of news deals to be completed at Elland Road, according to reliable reporter Phil Hay.

Latest Leeds news…

According to The Athletic, Celta Vigo were among several clubs to enquire about the availability of Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier in the summer, at a time when speculation over his future at Elland Road was running high. Nevertheless, Leeds United boss Daniel Farke was always keen to keep the Frenchman around despite their fall into the Championship and he has since nailed down the number one position between the sticks.

Football Insider claim that former Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani is charging the club around £1.7 million per year in rent arrears for the usage of Elland Road. Despite no longer being involved in the running of the Whites, Radrizzani is still the majority shareholder of Elland Road Ltd and is set to remain in position until the summer of 2032, when the lease between the two parties will come to an end.

Reports from Spain have made an astonishing claim regarding one avenue of Leeds transfer news on Raphinha, saying that Barcelona still owe £32.8 million for the winger, who left Elland Road for the La Liga giants in the summer of 2022. Just over £20 million is believed to be the figure due in the short term; however, the report adds that Leeds have filed to factor in their right to collect the unpaid fees through a financial institution.

Some Whites players are currently on international duty and will return to Yorkshire ahead of the trip to on October 21st Norwich City on October 21st at Carrow Road as they look to keep their positive start to the 2023/24 campaign going.

Leeds news – Nick Hammond and Gary Penrice

Leeds correspondent Hay has given a new update regarding some Leeds United contract news at Elland Road, detailing that football advisor Nick Hammond and scout Gary Penrice are in line to receive new contracts due to their positive work during the summer transfer window which they appear to have impressed the new owners.

The report states that talks are underway river new deals for Hammond and Penrice for the upcoming January transfer window and also next summer after initially arriving on a short-term deal, with the latter carrying particular importance due to a hoard of Leeds' loan players being set to return to Elland Road.

Of course, much will also be determined by whether Leeds successfully regain promotion to the English top-flight this term at the first time of asking, which may act as useful leverage to keep several of their current loanees at Elland Road for the foreseeable future, but Hammond and Penrice could be busy in Yorkshire over the next 12 months.

Hampshire push for victory to aid relegation fight

Hampshire are well on the way to victory against Nottinghamshire to increase the ptressure at the bottom of Division One

Moeen and Vince send timely England reminders

ScorecardLiam Dawson took two of four Nottinghamshire second innings wickets as Hampshire were held up in their quest for their second Specsavers County Championship victory of the season.Dawson’s spin managed to dismiss Chris Nash and the impressive Kraigg Brathwaite, with Kyle Abbott and Fidel Edwards also celebrating wickets – but Riki Wessels and Steven Mullaney showed off some brilliant defensive batting to give Nottinghamshire hope of saving a draw.Hampshire had set Nottinghamshire an improbable 511 to win, or a more likely 156 overs to bat out after Tom Alsop had fallen an agonising one run short of a second first-class century.Alsop had begun the day on 63, having provided the anchor for James Vince’s magnificent 147 the previous evening, and continued in a watchful manner with Rilee Rossouw.A century had looked inevitable with his carefully calculated flicks to the legside and occasional pushes into the offside slowly pushing his score towards three figures. No risks were taken by the 22-year-old during the 74-run stand with Rossouw – who punished the bad balls as he sensibly kept the score ticking to allow Hampshire to declare whenever they wanted. With the sun baring down on a slow wicket, which seemed to be getting slower, the Nottinghamshire attack were forced to toil for an hour with the old ball. But the new ball worked within five overs as Luke Fletcher pinned Rossouw lbw for 36.Alsop almost scored his maiden ton against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 2016, but fell for 93, and his ‘nineties hoodoo’ against Nottinghamshire struck again.Mark Footitt dragged short and outside his off-stump for his 196th ball and the left-hander jabbed unconvincingly straight to Matt Carter, who took a fine low catch at point.Gareth Berg fell soon after to Footitt as the ball stuck in the pitch to lob a simple catch to short extra cover.Abbott and Dawson added 133-runs for the eighth wicket in the first innings, and set about a similarly important accumulation with the duo putting on an unbroken 63. And with the lead reaching 511, Vince decided to call in the pair and declare. That left Nottinghamshire needing an unlikely 511 to win, or the more probable option of batting out 156 overs, on a slowing wicket under clear blue skies.Hampshire were without fast bowler Dale Steyn due to a groin injury sustained while bowling in the first innings – the South African underwent a scan during the afternoon with a short five day lay-off expected, although not yet clear. It appeared the hosts would miss their talisman when Brathwaite and Jake Libby dealt with new ball bowlers Fidel Edwards and Berg with defensive resolve. But Abbott joined the attack and in the 13th over and found a delivery to keep low to Libby and with some inward movement saw the opener’s off-stump cartwheel backwards.Nash was bamboozled by Dawson, as the left-arm spinner got one to straighten onto the former Sussex man’s pads, before Samit Patel tentatively pulled Edwards to Rossouw at mid-wicket.West Indian debutant Brathwaite maturely blocked and managed the game well with 48 from 123 balls, but ballooned a forward defensive off Dawson up to Berg at gully.Wessels, who suffered a nervy moment when he was dropped by Edwards on 12, and Mullaney took almost 20 overs out of the match to reach close still needing 383.

The former Liverpool stalwart, now plying his trade with Ajax, endured a torrid reception from the Villa faithful throughout the match, marking a challenging homecoming for the midfielder during the Europa Conference League encounter. There were resounding jeers directed at him from the stands, reminiscent of the hostility he faced from England fans at Wembley back in October.

Henderson put in a dismal shift in midfield as he looked unsettled after finding himself at the receiving end of the tumultuous reception. He admitted that it was a "tough game" and believes the second goal was the turning point in the match.

WHAT HENDERSON SAID

Speaking to after the match Henderson said: "Tough game. It's hard to stand here and put it into words straight after the game. We've been beaten quite easily in the end which is disappointing. I felt we were in the game at the end of the first half. We conceded a second goal which was poor on our behalf and then it's always tough at that point. To go 10 men it's very difficult to come back against a good side. Injuries and everything started to go wrong. If we'd kept it at 1-0 for longer we could have hurt them but we were well beaten in the end. Villa are a good side.

Ajax were dismantled by a fiery Villa side who took just 25 minutes to open the scoring through Ollie Watkins. Leon Bailey doubled the lead and after Sivert Mannsverk was given his marching orders for the visitors, Jhon Duran and Moussa Diaby added to the scoreline to complete a resounding victory.

Henderson and Co. are fifth in the Eredivisie, 19 points off the Champions League places, and will return to action against Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Villans will play West Ham on the same day in a Premier League encounter.

West Ham: Moyes could ditch Antonio for prolific "under the radar" target

West Ham United are seemingly interested in a replacement for Michail Antonio. Although the Jamaican international has certainly left a mark on the Premier League following his dramatic ascent through the divisions, the 33-year-old's consistency has sometimes left fans with a lot to be desired.

Who could replace Michail Antonio?

Antonio has enjoyed an intriguing West Ham career – with 100 direct goal involvements in 237 Premier League games, and last season's Conference League victory capping his spell in east London. However, with transition for the Hammers, an aging Antonio debatably doesn't strike the same fear he used to, as he netted just five league goals last term.

divin-mubama-michail-antonio-west-ham-premier-league
Adam Hlozek, West Ham United, WHU, Hammers, Premier League

So who could be his replacement at the London Stadium? Well, TEAMtalk has suggested Bayer Leverkusen's Adam Hlozek as an eye-catching heir. An even more imposing figure is cut by VFB Stuttgart's revelation Serhou Guirassy – whose ridiculous 14 goals in just eight Bundesliga games this term has had heads turning all around Europe. Today's focus though, doesn't come from Germany.

Instead rather, we move over the western border to the Netherlands as AZ Alkmaar's Greek forward Vangelis Pavlidis is the latest name to be tipped as a potential successor.

How good is Vangelis Pavlidis?

Ever-improving and ever-prolific since his switch to Eredivisie football in 2019, the 24-year-old has all the makings of a stalwart striker in any of the 'top five' leagues.

The Greek front man at Alkmaar initially got his formative start at VFL Bochum and then BVB Dortmund II, yet Holland was where the 'under the radar' goal rush started when he moved to Willem II on loan (and then permanently) in 2019.

At the Tilburg side, Pavlidis notched a total of 33 goals in 82 games. 28 of those came in 73 Eredivisie outings before he was snatched up by Alkmaar in July 2021.

41 goals in just 67 league games has the 6 foot 1 Greek propelling Alkmaar consistently near the top of the table. This season alone, a jaw-dropping (and improved) 13 goals in nine have helped them fly to second place. West Ham have moved along speculation by going to watch the Greek in his latest headliner performance.

How good could Vangelis Pavlidis be?

Goals are all well and good when underlining a striker's raw ability in front of goal, of course. But what about the more in-depth numbers when compared to similar strikers at his level?

FBref provides a sparkling scouting report of Pavlidis, especially when compared to Porto's Mehdi Teremi, Sporting's Viktor Gyökeres and PSV's Luuk de Jong. When looking over a stat report littered with green – Pavlidis notably brings 0.80 non-penalty goals per 90 (ranking in top 2% among his European peers).

His non-penalty xG is 0.54 per 90, which puts him in the top 6% percentile and even better – combining this with creating for teammates, his npxG + xAG (Assisted Goals) comes in at 0.74 – which lands him in the top 3% percentile.

Near-malleable in nature to his team's attack, it's hard to see a player of his ability not adapt to a greater challenge. Even if he didn't produce goals in the PL in a prospective move to the Irons, 29.57 passes per 90 (top 6%) and 2.75 progressive passes (top 11%) create space and chances for others. Pavlidis could really open the offensive floor for teammates – he causes havoc with 6.96 touches in the opposition area per 90 (top 1%).

The Greek wonder could be a well needed wrecking ball for Moyes' side, ensuring that with Antonio potentially set to be on his way sooner rather than later, the Scotsman can acquire a dream replacement.

Spurs could ease Bissouma blow with £100k-p/w "competitive animal"

Tottenham Hotspur are back in Premier League action again tonight, with fans likely still pinching themselves over their start to the new campaign.

However, they will have to contend without Yves Bissouma for tonight's clash with Fulham, who will be serving his one-match suspension.

How good is Yves Bissouma?

Having been deservedly booked for his first challenge, the Mali international would go on a weaving run just before the half time whistle, bundling into a crowd of opposition players.

Anticipating contact that never came, he threw himself over and was handed his second yellow, sent for an early bath before the break.

Whilst his side would still go on to win, his importance to Ange Postecoglou's outfit cannot be understated, with the 27-year-old enforcer having made himself near-irreplaceable with his form thus far.

A true defensive warrior, having maintained 3.3 tackles and 6.1 ball recoveries per game in the league thus far, it is his ability in possession that makes him so useful, as a press-resistant metronome who keeps everything ticking in the engine room.

As such, his 91% pass accuracy will be tough to substitute, even if it is for just one match.

Who could replace Yves Bissouma?

Whilst the Australian tactician could seek to tweak his system, or trial other stars in that role, perhaps he may be safer by opting for the wisest option, and instead starting Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a like-for-like alternative.

Although the £100k-per-week ace is not quite as mobile as Bissouma, he remains a sturdy figure more than capable of dictating a game on his own. After all, much of his Spurs career has seen him thrive without a partner of his level, with journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke writing: "Playing central midfield for Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte is not easy.

"You are outnumbered the whole time, trying to hold the side together as half of a pair, generally coming up against teams who have one extra body in the middle of the pitch. The first thing that this means is that you have to be ready to run. Just watching Hojbjerg and Bentancur get around the pitch can be tiring, as the two men try to get through the physical work of three."

So, with form of filling gaps, already the 28-year-old is ready to thrive,

Not to mention that just last season saw the Denmark international shine amidst all the turmoil, maintaining a 90% pass accuracy of his own whilst making 1.3 interceptions, 2.2 tackles and 1.4 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

He is a true warrior, and his time on the sidelines will have likely done little to damage his hunger to succeed. After all, journalist Manuel Domínguez attested that he was a "competitive animal" just last year.

Although perhaps sluggish at times, in a game where they are expected to dominate, his passing attributes under pressure will likely not be called upon too much. The Cottagers could fall into the trap of affording Hojbjerg time on the ball, which could see him thrive in Bissouma's absence, potentially reigniting his Spurs career in the process.

CSA could postpone T20 league again

CEO Thabang Moroe says the board is financially secure and does not have to depend on a T20 league for sustainability

Firdose Moonda24-Aug-2018Cricket South Africa will decide by the middle of September if it will host a T20 league, and has strongly indicated that a second postponement is possible if the financial viability of the event is not secure. In its first public statement on the league since CEO Thabang Moroe confirmed a six-team tournament on July 31, CSA explained it will not pursue a T20 league “at all costs” and prefers an approach of “cautious optimism”.Earlier this week, CSA’s league suffered a major blow when pay-television broadcaster SuperSport announced it was withdrawing from its equity share of the new tournament, effectively leaving CSA to fund the event itself. SuperSport was due to hold a 49% share in the new league after CSA opted to move away from private ownership. Four of the eight owners of the original T20 Global League (GLT20) are considering legal action against CSA, further complicating the organisation’s plans to launch a new T20 league.CSA has been pushed so far back that it has been unable to announce domestic fixtures for a season that should start in a month, unable to address the parliament’s sports and recreation committee earlier this week, and has asked for a postponement while preparing for next month’s AGM while being unable to provide any detailed information to the provincial affiliates, players or fans. It aimed to put the last of those right with a lengthy statement on Friday afternoon, the crux of which is that CSA believes it is in a healthy enough financial position to minimise the need for a T20 league.”It is important to highlight that CSA is a profitable sporting federation and that much as we believe in the product, we do not have to host a T20 league to assure financial sustainability,” Moroe said. “The game of cricket in SA is in a healthy state as demonstrated by the growth in cricket development at grassroots levels, a healthy pipeline of young future talent, as well as women’s cricket that has progressed with leaps and bounds.”Despite losses of over R200 million (USD 14.1 million) following the failure of the inaugural GLT20, CSA said its annual financial statements would still show “substantial reserves”. Given that CSA’s research has shown that a T20 tournament can take anywhere between four and seven years to break even, it is no longer looking at a league as a way to obtain financial independence away from ICC grants, in the same way former CEO Haroon Lorgat was.Lorgat, who conceptualised the GLT20, believed CSA could lessen its reliance on “Big Three” tours (hosting India, England and Australia are the only profitable series for South Africa) by launching its own IPL-style league. That was one of the key reasons Lorgat sought private investment. Now that CSA does not regard a T20 league as a major cash-cow, its approach to the concept is completely different from Lorgat’s.The release mentioned a “toned-down” event from the original GLT20, which could accommodate for private ownership at some point in the future. It also noted that an equity investment was “not a prerequisite” for a tournament of this nature, indicating it could be completely in-house. Though CSA remains committed to pursuing “every possible opportunity” to launch the league this year, time pressures and the absence of any exact deal – be it equity, broadcast or sponsorship – means South Africa could go a second summer with a massive gap in the calendar.”CSA believes that this can become a global sport event on the national calendar. However, the desire to host such an event cannot be considered at all cost,” CSA’s release read. “In this regard the CSA approach to cautious optimism might not be a popular approach. As a responsible governing body, CSA must ensure that an aspirational event is not to the detriment of the bulk of many cricketing activities that currently serve players and supporters.”The T20 league is pencilled in for November-December, when there are no other international fixtures in the South African calendar. After hosting Zimbabwe until mid-October and a short white-ball trip to Australia in early November, South Africa do not play any cricket until Boxing Day, when Pakistan arrive.

'It's made me a better player' – Ricardo Pepi sees the bright side of lack of PSV playing time after USMNT forward scores late winner against Twente

The United States international came off the bench in the 80th minute with the game against Twente still goalless. AdvertisementWHAT PEPI SAID

Pepi has built a reputation as a bit of a super-sub since joining PSV and when asked if he gets frustrated by his lack of playing time, he told : "It's difficult but I think it's made me a better player, it's made me a better person, it's showed me how to have a little bit more patience and that's my role at the moment."

On his goal, the the 21-year-old said: "Once I saw Luuk steel the ball, I wanted to make sure that I was inside the box, that's where you can make a difference. I felt like I was in the right place at the right moment and the ball came towards me and I had to put it into the back of the net."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pepi has scored nine goals for the unbeaten Eredivisie leaders but has not been able to secure a place in Peter Bosz's starting XI. He has started only two matches in all competitions – one in each of the Eredivisie and Champions League – and Bosz is aware that he is having a tough time with his role.

"It seems like the fewer minutes you give him, the more he scores," the coach told reporters. "You know that with him you are bringing in someone who scores easily and does not need much time to do so. That's nice."

He added: "Of course I have a conversation with him every now and then. Then he always says: I understand. He has the captain in front of him who is having a great season, scoring a lot and providing a lot of assists. I have noticed lately that he is starting to find it difficult. He trains very well and takes huge steps. In positional games you see that he is becoming increasingly ball-resistant. And then he has to start on the bench every time. That's difficult."

Pepi will continue to fight for his place in the PSV first-team when he returns from the CONCACAF Nations League finals with the USMNT.

However, Bosz cannot guarantee him more starts any time soon, adding: "But he has the American attitude. Lately I have been trying to get them to play together, but if you suddenly start playing with two centre-forwards, you also change the way you play. And there is no reason for that. That's the difficulty for Pepi."

Glamorgan batsmen finally stir as investigation begins

On the day that wooden spoonists Glamorgan announced an external review, their batsmen finally showed signs of life at Sophia Gardens

ECB Reporters Network and ESPNcricinfo staff24-Sep-2018
ScorecardGlamorgan, still searching for their second victory in Division Two of the Specsavers County Championship, responded to the announcement of an external review into their dismal season by reaching 331 for 8 at the close of the first day against Leicestershire at Sophia Gardens. In stark contrast to this season, the Welsh county built a series of solid partnerships to set the foundations of the innings, with five in excess of 50, a rarity for them in Championship cricket this season.Leicestershire initially took control on the first morning, as Glamorgan ended on 109 for 3 at lunch.Their Championship debutant fast bowler Tom Taylor had picked up his first two scalps in the morning, dismissing Nick Selman and Jack Murphy cheaply, as an all too familiar tale of batting woes for Glamorgan had looked set to continue. Taylor struck in successive overs, striking Nick Selman in front, before Jack Murphy holed out to Ben Mike at backward point. On the stroke of lunch, experienced South African Stephen Cook, who was brought in for late-season stability but who had only previously managed a highest score of 20 for the Welsh side, was leg before to Callum Parkinson for 36, as Glamorgan found themselves 96 for 3. Carlson remained at the crease on 48, with seven fours to his name from 67 balls. They secured their first batting point at Sophia Gardens since June during the afternoon session. Kiran Carlson brought up his 70-ball half-century with his eighth boundary in the first over of the afternoon from Dieter Klein, and he raced to 61 with two further fours. The boundaries flowed in the 32nd over, as Carlson drove Taylor either side of the wicket in consecutive deliveries before finding the ropes again two balls later and again in the following over, driving Ben Mike through backward point for the fifteenth boundary of his innings.Carlson’s resistance ended, however, when he was bowled by Mike for 83. Lawlor, off the mark from his nineteenth delivery, soon followed, leg before to Dieter Klein for two, as Glamorgan lost two wickets for no runs. When Craig Meschede and Chris Cooke came together at 148 for 5, another rescue mission was required and they duly obliged with a fifty partnership in 10.1 overs securing Glamorgan’s first batting point since the game against Warwickshire at Colwyn Bay in late August.A sixth wicket fell on 207, however, when Chris Cooke was caught behind off Gavin Griffiths for 27, ending a stand of 59 with Meschede, who was unbeaten on 39 as Glamorgan reached 228 for 6 at tea.Having waited a month since their last batting point, Glamorgan obtained a second as Graham Wagg and Craig Meschede, for the seventh wicket, guided their side beyond 250.Meschede, soon after he had reached his half-century from 107 balls, saw Graham Wagg dismissed lbw to Callum Parkinson for 28, ending a 61 partnership, before he was caught at backward point for 55, attempting a cut shot off Colin Ackermann to leave Glamorgan on 268 for 8.Timm van der Gugten, who scored an unbeaten 60 against Gloucestershire here two weeks ago, and Kieran Bull added an unbroken 63 for the ninth wicket.
