Yachine Trophy 2022 nominees announced: Courtois, Alisson and Mendy lead goalkeeper shortlist

Real Madrid's No.1 has been tipped to take the gong after a stellar season with the Spanish giants that saw him become a Champions League winner

The nominees for the best goalkeeper of the past season have been confirmed with the 2022 Yachine Trophy set to be awarded during the Ballon d'Or ceremony later this year.

Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma scooped the 2021 prize on the back of Italy's European Championship triumph, with Chelsea's Edouard Mendy finishing second in the final vote.

However, Thibaut Courtois is the man to beat this time around. The Real Madrid net-minder finally added the Champions League trophy to his glittering CV as the Blancos stormed to a 14th European title – and he even earned the Man of the Match award after their final victory over Liverpool.

There are plenty of other top keepers that have made the final vote, which will be conducted by , so read on for the full list of nominees:

World Cup performance vs population – Minnows Croatia upset the odds to finish third, Morocco exceeded expectations but giants USMNT & Germany underwhelmed… so, how did all 32 countries rank in Qatar?

Part of the attraction of the World Cup is the ability for countries to outperform their size, economic status and club prestige on the pitch

Just like in 2018, Croatia proved to be a powerful force at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar despite numerous factors working against them – including a tiny population to draw talent from relative to the United States, Mexico and others.

Zlatko Dalic made the most of a talented generation led by Luka Modric, guiding Croatia to a third-place finish after a memorable quarter-final upset of Brazil.

So how did all of the competitors stack up when taking population into account? GOAL's list is calculated by working out the difference between where each country ranks in terms of population size and their final ranking at the World Cup.

When teams went out in the same round, we used points (if a team went out on penalties in the knockouts, we say they drew their match), then goal difference and then goals scored to split them.

Liverpool's Jude Bellingham alternative? Bayern Munich flop Ryan Gravenberch could be part of Jurgen Klopp's midfield solution

The Netherlands international is one of a host of summer transfer targets for the Reds, and has the profile and skillset to thrive at Anfield

If you’re a midfielder, aged 26 or under and have played some kind of top-flight European football in the past two years, there’s a fair chance you’ll be linked to Liverpool in the coming weeks, if you haven't already.

The list of players being touted for a summer move to Anfield is getting longer by the day, it seems. You can cross Jude Bellingham off it, for now at least, but in Mason Mount, Matheus Nunes, Conor Gallagher, Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo, Teun Koopmeiners, Jesper Lindstrom, Youri Tielemans, Declan Rice, Jacob Ramsey, Nicolo Barella, Gavi, Ruben Neves and Gabri Veiga there are plenty of other names to look out for. And that’s just on Page One.

Ryan Gravenberch is the latest to emerge as a target, with the Reds exploring the possibility of a deal for the Bayern Munich man. A fee of just £25 million ($31m) has even been touted for the 20-year-old, who is understood to be receptive to the idea of a move to Merseyside.

A smart signing, potentially, for a club which needs a few of those at the moment. Liverpool’s need is great after a miserable season on the pitch, and with several members of Jurgen Klopp’s squad either leaving, declining or both, they need both quality and quantity in the summer window.

So could Gravenberch fit the bill? GOAL takes a look at the situation…

Getty ImagesOn the radar

Liverpool’s interest in Gravenberch is long-standing, dating back to his days as an outstanding youth product with Ajax.

There, he was compared with the likes of Frank Rijkaard, a mixture of physicality, drive and technical quality. His coach at Under-15 level, Brian Tevreden, has also likened him to Paul Pogba. In 2018, he became the youngest debutant in Ajax’s history, beating the record set by the great Clarence Seedorf.

Liverpool came across Gravenberch regularly when playing in youth tournaments, and ran into him at senior level when they were drawn in the same Champions League group as Ajax in the 2020-21 season.

The Reds won both meetings 1-0, but Gravenberch impressed, particularly in Amsterdam as he competed manfully with a Liverpool midfield containing James Milner, Curtis Jones and countryman Gini Wijnaldum.

“One to watch,” was the verdict after that contest, and it looks as though the Reds have been true to their word.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesMisery in Munich

Gravenberch was one of a host of players to leave Ajax last summer, following the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Antony, Sebastian Haller, Noussair Mazraoui, Perr Schuurs and Niclolas Tagliafico, as well as manager Erik ten Hag, out of the door.

A £20m ($25m) switch to Bayern looked, on the face of it, like it could be the perfect move, with Gravenberch expected to continue his development apace in Bavaria.

“He is one of the biggest talents in Europe,” Bayern director of sport Hasan Salihamidzic said at the time. “We’re confident that we’ll enjoy lots of success with him.”

That hasn’t happened, though. Gravenberch’s first season in Munich has been underwhelming, to say the least. He has started only one Bundesliga game, and only four in all competitions. His last start came on November 1 in a Champions League dead rubber against Inter, and his only goal came in August, in a 5-0 cup win against third-tier outfit Viktoria Koln.

As far back as September, Gravenberch was talking about his lack of playing time, and his frustration has only grown as the season has gone on. Bayern have been far from vintage this term – their performances were enough to get Julian Nagelsmann the sack, remember – but there have still been few opportunities for Gravenberch, with Jamal Musiala, Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich all preferred.

Nagelsmann’s replacement, Thomas Tuchel, has spoken well of the youngster. “He trains well,” the former Chelsea boss said recently. “He’s a candidate to start.”

Despite this, though, it is understood that Gravenberch is leaning towards the idea of another fresh start this summer, and that the player’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, has already begun liaising with potential buyers, of which there are a few.

GettyNot for sale?

Despite this, the word from Bayern is that they are not looking to sell the player this summer, that Tuchel is a fan and that Gravenberch is very much part of the future.

They are, though, about to announce the signing of another midfielder, Konrad Laimer, from RB Leipzig, meaning opportunities for Gravenberch are likely to be even more limited next season.

Liverpool themselves looked at Laimer last summer, but were made aware early on that the Austrian was bound for Munich. Whether that can now help them land Gravenberch, however, remains to be seen.

Certainly, the reported £25m ($31m) price tag seems low, even allowing for the player’s low-key season. Bayern, after all, paid an initial £16m ($20m) only a year ago, with an extra £4.4m ($5.5m) in add-ons, so a mark-up of around £5m ($6.2m) for a player who only turns 21 in May feels a little on the skinny side, especially with Ajax having retained a sell-on clause believed to be worth around 7.5 percent of any future profit.

(C)Getty ImagesLiverpool meetings

Liverpool’s interest, though, is genuine. With Bellingham off the agenda, the Reds are looking to make at least three, and probably four, key signings this summer, with strengthening their midfield ranks very much top of the agenda.

The club have not denied a recent report in the that a representative met with Gravenberch’s father, also called Ryan, in Amsterdam earlier this month to discuss a potential deal, although it is understood that the person in question was not sporting director Julian Ward.

It has also not gone unnoticed that Jose Enrique, the former Liverpool defender turned pundit, described Gravenberch as “a done deal” recently, claiming inside knowledge courtesy of his agent.

Arsenal are also said to be monitoring Gravenberch’s situation, with the Gunners expected to be in the market for at least one midfielder this summer, while Manchester United are another club who have previously been keen, and have the potential lure of his former Ajax boss Ten Hag too, of course.

Liverpool, Klopp has already stated, are ready to spend money this summer, and it is expected that they will do so early in the window too. That is one of the reasons they have withdrawn from the Bellingham race, so as not to waste time fighting for a player who may or may not choose Anfield as his destination.

Getting deals done early has always been important to Klopp, who likes to have a full pre-season to work with players and teach them his team's demands. That will be important again this summer, perhaps more than ever.

Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi and the winners & losers of the 2022-23 European season

GOAL looks back on a season marred by financial scandals involving Manchester City and Juventus, but illuminated by Napoli's Scudetto success

Well, that's a wrap. Another season has drawn to a close, one which offered no end of controversy and quality, as perhaps best illustrated by Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's terrific team finally conquered Europe to complete a historic treble, but an asterisk must be placed against all of their achievements over the past 15 years, with the Abu Dhabi-backed club having been charged with breaching more than 100 of the Premier League's financial regulations.

There was similar drama in Italy, with Juventus having points being taken away from them, given back, and then taken away again on a seemingly weekly basis, making a farce of the Serie A standings. In an era of football now in very real danger of being completely corrupted by finances, the table, it seems, actually does lie sometimes.

It wasn't all doom and gloom, though. There were some inspirational success stories. For example, unlike City's treble, Napoli's Serie A title triumph was a legitimate fairy tale and sparked one of the biggest street parties the world has ever seen!

So, without a further ado, let's get stuck into the biggest winners and losers of the 2022-23 European season…

Getty ImagesLOSER: Lionel Messi

In the grand scheme of things, what happened this season on either side of the World Cup is irrelevant as far as Lionel Messi is concerned. He'd long since proved himself the GOAT – but his heroics in Qatar effectively ended the debate. He's now completed both international and club football.

However, there's no denying that the second half of the 2022-23 campaign didn't pan out as Messi planned. He looked utterly lost as PSG suffered a humiliating last-16 exit in the Champions League and very few fans were sad to see him leave. Indeed, Messi, rather incredibly, left with boos, whistles and jeers ringing in his ears.

To make matters worse, hopes of a romantic return to Barcelona were dashed by the grim reality of the very same financial problems that forced him out of Camp Nou two years ago.

Inter Miami is obviously a shrewd move for Messi, certainly from a financial and familial perspective, but there's no doubt that he would have preferred to end up back at Barca, aiming for the fifth Champions League title he'd long targeted.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWINNER: Xavi

The writing was on the wall for Xavi after Barcelona's humiliating group-stage elimination from the Champions League. And he knew it. "With the effort made by the club [during the summer transfer market] the squad we have, we have to compete for trophies," he admitted to reporters. "And if we don't, as the president [Joan Laporta] said, there will be consequences, starting with me. But I am going to give everything so that this works." And it did.

Barcelona's football certainly wasn't pretty – it was more reminiscent of the Louis van Gaal era at Camp Nou than Pep Guardiola's – but it delivered a first Liga title in four years that definitely saved Xavi from the sack. Of course, it's imperative that Barca challenge for the Champions League next season – not least for the club's coffers – but, for now, the coach can be proud of a job well done.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Chelsea

The Chelsea board issued a statement after the conclusion of the worst Premier League campaign in the club's history, acknowledging that "there is a lot" that they can do better. In truth, though, they need to do absolutely everything better next season, because the past year has been an absolute farce.

One could argue that Todd Boehly and his equally clueless colleagues only got one thing right: cancelling the annual end of season awards ceremony because they realised it would not have gone over well with the club's already furious fans.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino will hopefully restore a semblance of order at Stamford Bridge, but on the evidence of what we've seen so far – the shameful sacking of Thomas Tuchel, the embarrassing abandonment of the Graham Potter project, the ludicrous appointment of Frank Lampard on an interim basis and the arrival of one overpriced player after another – it would be naive to expect an end to the chaos anytime soon.

(C)Getty ImagesLOSER: Football's fight against racism

Racism is a societal problem. We all get that. But football's handling of the problem is, at best, embarrassingly haphazard, and, at worst, downright offensive. Seriously, what was more shocking: the racist abuse that Vinicius Junior has been repeatedly subjected to in Spain this season – or Javier Tebas' reaction to it? The head of La Liga was, incredibly, more interested in lashing out at the victim than doing anything about the culprits.

Tebas subsequently apologised for his shameful reaction, but it was indicative of a wider problem. When players of colour all across the world like Romelu Lukaku are still being booked for silent protests, one begins to understand the scale of the ignorance at the heart of football's supposed fight against racism. How can the game's authorities even begin trying to solve a problem that they clearly still don't understand?

Man Utd losing Harry Kane to Bayern Munich is a massive mistake! Tottenham striker would be perfect for Erik ten Hag's side

The England captain is reportedly closing in on a move to the German champions – while the Red Devils continue to stand still in their striker hunt

After 14 years of loyal service to Tottenham, it looks like Harry Kane will finally be moving onto pastures new this summer. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are among those to have registered interest in the 29-year-old, but Bayern Munich are currently leading the race for his signature.

It has been reported that the Bundesliga champions have reached an agreement in principle with Kane's representatives, after seeing an opening £60m ($77m) bid for the forward rejected by Spurs. Bayern are set to return with an improved offer, and Tottenham may have little choice but to cash in, or else risk losing Kane for free when his contract expires next summer.

For a long time, it seemed as though Manchester United would be Kane's landing spot if he left Tottenham. Erik ten Hag has made it clear he is desperate to bring in a new No.9, having seen his side struggle for goals throughout the 2022-23 campaign.

Daniel Levy's reluctance to sell to a direct rival is no secret, which is why the Spurs chairman reportedly demanded over £100m ($127m) for Kane after United made initial enquiries over his availability earlier this year. And the Red Devils are simply not willing to spend that much.

United haven't been shy when it comes to shelling out huge fees in the recent past, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Antony all brought in for fees exceeding £70m ($88m). But they won't make the same level of investment in Kane – arguably the greatest striker in the history of English football.

Bayern are in the clear to complete a huge coup, and if they do seal a deal for the Tottenham striker, they'll be genuine Champions League contenders next season. United, meanwhile, are making a huge mistake by standing back and letting it happen.

(C)Getty imagesStill at his peak

One of the reasons United have reportedly baulked at Levy's valuation of Kane is because of his age, with the Spurs marksman set to celebrate his 30th birthday later in July. But he hasn't shown any sign of slowing down on the pitch.

In fact, the 2022-23 campaign was probably his best yet in a Tottenham shirt, despite the fact he was leading the line for a disjointed team lacking quality in all other areas of the pitch. Kane reached the 30-goal mark in the Premier League for the second time in his career, and only finished six goals behind Manchester City's scoring machine Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race.

Haaland also won the PFA Player of the Year ahead of Kane, but the Norwegian couldn't really fail in Pep Guardiola's set-up. City stormed to the treble last season, and while Haaland deserves great credit for his finishing, he had world-class providers such as Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish putting chances on a plate for him.

Kane, meanwhile, carried Spurs with his outstanding individual performances. They ended up in eighth place purely because of his superhuman efforts – and it's not a stretch to say they would have edged towards the relegation zone without him.

There are plenty of great players that have been able to prolong their careers at the highest level well into their thirties in the modern era. In Kane's position, the man he could soon replace at Bayern, Robert Lewandowski, won the Pichichi award for the top scorer in La Liga last season as he fired Barcelona to the title in his first season at the club.

The 35-year-old Karim Benzema only finished with four goals fewer than Lewandowski (19) in his final season at Real Madrid, having landed his maiden Ballon d'Or in December on the back of his 44-goal haul the previous campaign. Both players have looked after themselves physically and showed the discipline necessary to ensure longevity.

And so has Kane. The England international could quite easily make the starting line up for any top club in the world over the next four to five years. United's caution when it comes to Kane, then, makes absolutely no sense. There might be cheaper options out there to fill a centre-forward berth, but there is no one better.

AdvertisementGetty/GOALPremier League king

"If Harry wants to join Bayern, I'll drive his f*cking car there myself; anything to protect my Premier League goalscoring record," Alan Shearer said in a recent article for . Kane currently has 213 Premier League goals to his name, which puts him just 47 behind the former Newcastle and Blackburn forward's all-time record mark. If he were to stay at Spurs, Kane would undoubtedly go on to break Shearer's mark.

But if Kane went to United, he could potentially smash it. Ten Hag's squad is in far better shape than Tottenham's after a positive maiden year at Old Trafford for the Dutch coach. The Red Devils lifted the Carabao Cup and came third in the Premier League to qualify for the Champions League, before suffering defeat to City in the FA Cup final. Players such as Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw all stepped up their game, while new signings Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez added a new dimension to the team.

Ten Hag could ideally do with a new goalkeeper to replace the declining David de Gea, but their top priority must be to sign a top-quality centre-forward. If United could prise Kane away from Spurs, they'd be guaranteed title contenders in 2023-24. Kane would be the definition of a transformative signing. He's not just Premier League proven – he's the king of the competition.

So often last season, United's final ball failed to match their slick, incisive build-up play, and that's because they had no one getting into the right positions. They also were also the most wasteful side in the league, missing 50 big chances in total. If they swallowed their pride and forked out on Kane, those issues would be solved. Not least because the England captain is motivated to go past Shearer.

“For sure it’s something I want to do. I think whenever you get close to these types of records, all it does is drive you, to try and achieve them," Kane told in May. "In a couple of years we will see where I am at and how close I am but now I am this close to it, for sure it is something I would love to achieve."

GettyEngland connection

United have long been linked with Kane, and West Ham's Declan Rice, who also appears to have fallen off their radar due to his price tag – with Arsenal set to sign him for a British-record fee. But while away with the duo on England duty for the latest set of Euro 2024 qualifiers, Shaw welcomed the prospect of linking up with his international team-mates at club level.

"I would love a few of them to join – I am not going to lie," said the United defender. "I am speaking to them, telling them how good Manchester is, because I know their qualities. I know they are world-class players and they would be a massive help to us but I can only say so much. If it was down to me, I'd take them in a heartbeat."

Rashford, Harry Maguire, Sancho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka also play alongside Shaw at Old Trafford, while Chelsea's Mason Mount is also on the verge of joining Ten Hag's ranks. The addition of Kane would complete United's English contingent nicely.

He'd have no problems making the transition from London to Manchester with his countrymen on hand to help him settle in. The connection between Kane, Rashford and Shaw, in particular, was clear to see in England's 7-0 win over North Macedonia at Old Trafford.

Kane opened the scoring after Rashford found Shaw running into the far side of the box with a deft through ball, and the left-back provided a perfect cut-back for the Tottenham striker to convert with ease from eight yards out. Kane then went on to have a big hand in Rashford's third goal for the Three Lions after pressing to win the ball back deep in opposition territory.

The Spurs talisman already has a great relationship on and off the pitch with United's English players. And a player of his talents is even capable of going down in the United history books. The list of the best English players to have played at Old Trafford includes icons such as Sir Bobby Charlton, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney – who is United's all-time top goalscorer. Kane would no doubt stake a claim to be mentioned in the same breath if he joined the club, even if it was only for a short period.

GettyTen Hag is a big fan

Ten Hag became a master at dodging transfer questions towards the end of last season, which is a useful skill for any United manager. No club in world football generates more rumours about potential new additions, but the Dutchman has given nothing away when it comes to his preferred targets.

Kane was top of the agenda before United's 2-2 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April, and Ten Hag was typically tight-lipped when asked if the centre-forward could fit into his team. "I am preparing my team for a game against Spurs," said the United boss. "He is one of the players that we have to face from Spurs, so I don't think about anything else."

However, Ten Hag couldn't resist expressing his admiration towards Kane before leaving his press conference seat: "The number of goals, and also his key actions [that] come to a goal, final passes as well, he is just a great player, great personality as well." And naturally, Ten Hag's praise set the stage for a sublime Kane performance.

Spurs' all-time record goalscorer played in a deeper role against United, and was the driving force behind their second-half fightback from a two-goal deficit. Kane provided an inch-perfect pass for Son Heung-min to bring the hosts back into the game before also playing a key role in Pedro Porro's equaliser as Ten Hag saw his side capitulate in midfield.

Kane is one of the best marksmen in the business due to his ability to sniff out chances and finish emphatically with both feet and his head. But he's also a fantastic all-round player, which is exactly why he'd be such a great fit for Ten Hag's side. The United tactician wants a No.9 who is equally as comfortable with his back-to-goal as he is when facing it; someone that can bring others in to play and have the technical quality to execute defence-splitting passes.

Time and time again last season, Kane led by example while the rest of his Spurs team-mates allowed their standards to drop. It would be a different story for him at Old Trafford, where he'd be backed up by plenty of hungry, forward-thinking players capable of making the most of his creativity.

Kane might not be the quickest striker in the world, but he more than makes up for it with his movement off the ball and decision-making on it. He's exactly what United need, which is why their trepidation over getting involved in proper negotiations with Spurs is so difficult to understand.

How do Real Madrid replace Thibaut Courtois? David de Gea, Keylor Navas and six possible signings after goalkeeper suffers serious knee injury

Real Madrid are left without a top class goalkeeper after stalwart Thibaut Courtois tore his ACL in training.

Real Madrid officially have a massive goalkeeping problem. On Thursday, the club announced that Thibaut Courtois — arguably among the best in the world in his position — had injured his ACL during training. He will undergo surgery in the coming days, and is effectively out for the season before it's even begun.

So what do Madrid do now? Los Blancos have a solid back-up in their ranks, with Andriy Lunin having shown promise in a handful of appearances. But there are also a few interesting options potentially available on the market.

Signing one of them likely won't be an expensive endeavour, however, and Madrid will still back Courtois to return to his pre-injury form in 2024-25, so the player must come in with their eyes open that this could be a one-season agreement.

Regardless, Madrid need a competent No.1 if they are to compete on all three fronts this season, so who's available? GOAL looks at Madrid's best options…

Getty David de Gea (free agent)

David de Gea is a curious one. As a shot-stopper, there aren't many better out there. The Spanish keeper has made some extraordinary saves over the years and proved himself as a solid one-on-one operator, too.

Still, it's hard to overlook his fault — and there are a lot of them. De Gea is poor with his feet, increasingly error prone, and is beaten at his near post concerningly often. Throw in the size of his expected salary demands, and this doesn't make the most sense in terms of value for money.

Manchester United have struggled with his risks and rewards for a few years now — and finally made the decision to get rid of him this summer. But a desperate Madrid might just overlook the bad in order to take advantage of the good. They have, after all, tried to sign him before…

AdvertisementGettyKeylor Navas (Paris Saint-Germain)

How about a wholesome reunion? Keylor Navas enjoyed an excellent spell between the sticks for Madrid from 2014-2018. It was, in fact, the arrival of Courtois that saw the Costa Rican depart for Paris Saint-Germain.

And he didn't have much luck there, either. The Parisians signed Gigi Donnarumma within 10 months of his arrival, and relegated Navas to the bench. He's still out of starting contention in Paris, but a loan spell at Nottingham Forest towards the end of last season showed that he can still play at the highest level.

PSG might want to keep him, though, with Sergio Rico's horrendous accident leaving the Parisians without a clear No.2. It's one to watch, but external factors might, once again, limit Navas' career prospects.

GettyKepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea)

It would be the ultimate act of failing upwards. Kepa Arrizabalaga has shown in the five years since his record-breaking £72 million ($92m) move to Chelsea that he isn't really that good of a goalkeeper. The Spain international has enjoyed some memorable moments and has some top saves in him, but his flaws have consistently outweighed his ability. He has been error-ridden over the course of his stay, and has a real problem stopping shots from distance.

That could be an issue for a Madrid side that don't really concede too many chances. If anything, Madrid 'keepers have to be able to stop the certain goals, and salvage games that seem to be going the other way.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea would sell, but they have just signed Robert Sanchez from Brighton and Bayern Munich have already tested the water as they search for their own No.1. Madrid could do worse than get themselves involved, too.

Getty ImagesYassine Bounou (Sevilla)

Yassine Bounou became something of a cult hero at the 2022 World Cup after turning in a handful of excellent performances for Morocco, and he carried that momentum into the club season for Sevilla, playing a key role as the Spanish side won the Europa League (again.)

He isn't a very versatile option. Indeed, Bounou is a pure shot-stopper, capable of delivering in big moments. If Ancelotti wants a keeper to spray the ball around, or even come off his line regularly, he isn't really the right fit.

He could, though, certainly do a job. Bounou's skill in penalty shootouts is undeniable, while he is also surprisingly good in the air, despite being under 6'3. And at 32, he might be a solid option on a short-term deal.

The Gunners are reluctant to sell, despite now having Declan Rice on their books to fill a holding midfield role, but that stance may be relaxed if the right offer is tabled. Ghana international Partey is currently working his way back from a hamstring injury, but has figured in three Premier League games for Arsenal in the 2023-24 campaign.

Napoli upset striker with TikTok videoClub say they did not mean to mock himSerie A side stopped short of apologisingWHAT HAPPENED?

Napoli's social media account sparked controversy by posting a video of the Nigerian forward missing a penalty while a high-pitched voice played over the top saying: "Gimme penalty please". Osimhen's agent suggested they could take legal action against the Serie A side because of the video and the player removed all mention of the club from his Instagram account.

Osimhen then refrained from celebrating his goal against Udinese and the apparent breakdown in his relationship with Napoli has resulted in reports that he could leave, with Real Madrid and clubs from Saudi Arabia said to be after him.

WHAT THEY SAID

Napoli have attempted to resolve the situation by releasing a statement insisting they did not mean to upset Osimhen, but they stopped short of making an apology.

"Napoli, wishing to avoid any exploitation of the issue, point out that we never wanted to offend or mock Victor Osimhen, who is a treasure of this club," a statement read.

"As proof of that, during the summer training retreat, the Club firmly rebuffed every offer that was received for the striker’s transfer abroad.

"Social media, in particular TikTok, has always used an expressive form of language with a light heart and creativity, without wanting to, as in the case with Osimhen as protagonist, have any intention of insult or derision.

"In any case, if Victor perceived any offence towards him, this was not what the club intended."

Man Utd player ratings vs Sheffield Utd: Deadly Diogo Dalot saves the day after another dismal display from Erik ten Hag's struggling side

The Portuguese smashed in a stunning late goal as the Red Devils got away with victory despite turning in a turgid performance

Manchester United keep on playing badly, but they keep on producing moments of magic to get them out of jail. Despite playing against the weakest team in the Premier League, Erik ten Hag's side really struggled against Sheffield United.

They were fortunate to take the lead through Scott McTominay, only to lose it when the midfielder gave away a penalty and Oliver McBurnie struck from the spot. United needed some smart saves from Andre Onana to keep the Blades at bay, and then Diogo Dalot scored a world-class strike late on to give them the lead again.

It was not the performance United would have hoped for on the day club legend Sir Bobby Charlton sadly passed away, but at least they picked up more points and for the first time this season have back-to-back league wins.

GOAL rates Manchester United's players from Bramall Lane

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Andre Onana (6/10):

One of his better games for United, making some crucial saves in each half to prevent another disaster.

Diogo Dalot (7/10):

Was poor defensively but his wonderful bolt from the blue saved the day.

Jonny Evans (6/10):

Just like at Turf Moor, his experience helped United negotiate their way to a scrappy win.

Harry Maguire (6/10):

Looked surprisingly solid for most of the game, back at his boyhood club.

Victor Lindelof (5/10):

Often an accident waiting to happen but gains a mark for teeing up Dalot's winner.

Sofyan Amrabat (6/10):

Had an up-and-down game, often giving the ball away but also creating lots of danger, including hitting the woodwork.

Scott McTominay (6/10):

Fittingly scored the breakthrough goal on the day of Charlton's passing but then gave away the penalty moments later.

Bruno Fernandes (5/10):

Another sloppy performance, although he almost scored.

Antony (4/10):

For the umpteenth time, the Brazilian failed to cause any danger.

Rasmus Hojlund (4/10):

A quiet display, and when he was gifted a golden chance to score he sent the ball straight at Wes Foderingham

Marcus Rashford (5/10):

Couldn't build on the momentum after scoring for England and kept running out of power and space when he got forward.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Antony Martial (6/10):

Better at hold-up play than Hojlund and gave United more structure in attack.

Christian Eriksen (7/10):

He keeps on being hauled on to improve United's play and it keeps on working.

Alejandro Garnacho (7/10):

Injected some urgency and some hope into United's attack, and it eventually paid off.

Raphael Varane (N/A):

Only came on in the 84th minute.

Mason Mount (N/A):

Introduced in the 88th minute.

Erik ten Hag (5/10):

His changes may have helped win the game, but he cannot escape criticism for another turgid display, this time against the worst side in the league.
