Door ajar for full-strength Windies squad

West Indies could yet field a full-strength squad at the Champions Trophy, with the ICC willing to accept a “revised” line-up in the event the industrial relations dispute between the board and the players is resolved

Alex Brown15-Sep-2009West Indies could yet field a full-strength squad at the Champions Trophy, with the ICC willing to accept a “revised” line-up in the event the industrial relations dispute between the board and the players is resolved. Despite setting an August 11 deadline for national boards to nominate their 15-man squads for the Champions Trophy, the ICC has advised the WICB it would take into account the exceptional circumstances brought on by the labour dispute and allow the likes of Chris Gayle, Denesh Ramdin and Shivnarine Chanderpaul to play at the tournament. For that to happen, the WICB and the players would need to end their stand-off before West Indies’ tournament opener against Pakistan at the Wanderers Ground on September 23. The recent breakdown in mediation talks between the two parties raised fears of a damaging and protracted split, although WIPA’s announcement this week that it would accept CARICOM’s six-point resolution plan may yet mark a turning point in the labour crisis. Both the ICC and its broadcast partner, ESPN STAR Sports, have impressed upon the WICB their desire for a full-strength West Indies team to compete at the eight-team, two-week tournament in South Africa. The Champions Trophy has been criticised in the past for lacking context and prestige in an already crowded international calendar, and the ICC is hopeful the streamlined format – and the $4 million prize purse – will reinvigorate the appetite of both the players and the public for the embattled tournament and the 50-over game in general.A weakened West Indies squad is hardly in keeping with that ambition. The WICB controversially named a second-string squad for the Champions Trophy while locked in mediation talks with WIPA – a move criticised by Bharrat Jagdeo, the Guyanese president CARICOM chairman, and Sir Shridath Ramphal, the former Commonwealth secretary-general and CARICOM-appointed mediator – but an ICC source told Cricinfo hope remained that an 11th-hour settlement would allow West Indies to field their elite squad. The ICC has played a behind-the-scenes role in the WICB-WIPA dispute, although Haroon Lorgat, the council’s chief executive, would not be drawn on the specifics of their involvement. He did, however, call upon the West Indian board to restore senior players to the Champions Trophy squad; a move that would enhance the tournament’s objective of pitting the best versus the best.”We would be disappointed if the best team is not taken to South Africa, but we understand the complex situation that exists,” Lorgat told Cricinfo. “The West Indies have the unfettered right to select whomever they choose.”Any move to return their elite players to the field would present the WICB with a sizeable logistical and cost issue. The Floyd Reifer-led West Indies squad have already arrived in South Africa and played two practice matches against provincial sides. The bulk of those players would presumably be recalled to the Caribbean should the path be cleared for the Windies’ striking cricketers to return – a scenario the cash-strapped board could do without. But there is much at stake – not least the desire of ESPN Star Sports to protect its reported $1.1 billion broadcast deal with the ICC through to 2015. Manu Sawhney, ESPN Star Sport’s managing director, delivered a veiled criticism of West Indies’ current stance by stating his hope that “the unique position of the ICC Champions Trophy in the international cricket calendar will remain intact with the full participation of best available squads from all the competing teams.””We firmly believe that the ICC Champions Trophy should be a premium international event where the best players from the top cricketing nations compete for the honours and are confident that the ICC and the cricketing community in general shares that belief,” Sawhney told Cricinfo.”As highlighted by you, lately there have been concerns regarding West Indies that have been raised in the media. As ICC’s leading commercial partners, we continually maintain a dialogue with the ICC on various aspects of our relationship. However, it is our policy not to publicly comment on such discussions. We are proud of our association with the ICC and very much value this relationship.”

Chiesa could transform Conte’s Spurs side

Fabio Paratici could transform Tottenham Hotspur under new manager Antonio Conte by signing one of his mooted transfer targets…

What’s the word?

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato.it, the recently-appointed 52-year-old has already a long list of targets ahead of the January transfer window as he looks to improve Spurs’ fortunes on the pitch.

Among the names listed by the report is Juventus attacker Federico Chiesa, who is valued in the region of €80m (£68m) to €90m (£76.5m) and could be eyed as a secondary striker or a winger in his three-at-the-back formation.

The Serie A giants only signed the 34-cap Italian winger in October 2020 on a two-year loan deal with an obligation to buy worth €40m (£36m) plus €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons. The initial loan is thought to cost around €10m (£8.5m), as per Juventus.com.

A major coup

If Paratici could deliver a player of this calibre, then Conte stands a very good chance at achieving success in north London. In fact, this sort of signing could genuinely transform the club on the pitch, tenfold.

The former Chelsea boss is walking into a complete mess at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and one of their biggest problems has been in attack, where they have looked uninspiring, unimaginative and quite frankly, appalling.

As per WhoScored, Spurs rank joint-last for average number of shots per game (10.3) alongside rock-bottom and winless Norwich City and second-last for key chances created per game (7.1).

Similarly, the Lilywhites have the fourth-worst expected goals ratio in the English top-flight (10.63 xG), with three relegation contenders ranking below them, via Understat.

Harry Kane has scored just once in eight league starts, so he is clearly struggling and a player like Chiesa could hold the keys to not only help him out in the final third but also carry the burden and pressure of finding the net.

Last season, the 24-year-old dynamo contributed a whopping 15 goals and 11 assists across 46 appearances, meaning he averaged a direct contribution once every 121.8 minutes, via Transfermarkt.

Furthermore, he has averaged at least 1.8 key passes every 90 minutes since his arrival at the Allianz Stadium, as per WhoScored, only bolstering his creative claims.

He continued that electric form into Euro 2020, where he played a starring role in Italy’s triumph, defeating England in the final.

Speaking about his performances on the biggest stage, BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand waxed lyrical, he said: “He’s a huge player and he’s been linked with a few clubs in England. I’m sure they’re thinking ‘why didn’t we get him?’. He’s just a fantastic footballer.

“The intensity with which he plays with, we saw in the Euros he was the main goal threat for the Italians who went on to win the tournament. It’s his pace, his drive. He’s the one who is the threat, he’s potent, he wants to run in behind.”

The £63m-rated Juventus beast has also been dubbed a “special talent” by BBC Sport contributor Premier League Panel, as well as a “big game player” and an “absolute gem” by BT Sport commentator Adam Summerton.

Paratici must look to seal a move for him at all costs heading into 2022. If Conte is to elevate Spurs back to where they used to be, then he needs players like Chiesa at his disposal.

Harris extends Leicestershire contract

The seamer, AJ Harris, and the allrounders Wayne White and Jigar Naik have extended their contracts to stay with Leicestershire

Cricinfo staff14-Oct-2009The seamer, Andrew Harris, and the allrounders Wayne White and Jigar Naik have extended their contracts to stay with Leicestershire.Harris, 36, has signed for another season after finishing as the county’s leading wicket-taker with 35 scalps in 2009, while White, 24, and Naik, 25, have agreed new two-year deals.”AJ is a good senior bowler and Wayne is a talented player who has a lot going for him and will only get better,” said Leicestershire’s chief executive, David Smith. “Jigar has also made good progress. He scored a century against Derbyshire and his bowling was outstanding.”

Jamal Baptiste can save West Ham millions

David Moyes should consider turning to U23 starlet Jamal Baptiste in light of West Ham’s recent blow to Angelo Ogbonna…

Ogbonna blow

During the Irons’ 3-2 victory over Liverpool last weekend, the 33-year-old centre-back sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and could now be ruled out of action for the next nine months or more.

“After being substituted following a separate incident that led to him suffering a cut above his eye, Angelo felt some discomfort in his right knee so we scanned him to ascertain the extent of the injury,” said Head of Medical Richard Collinge.

“That scan has shown up some damage to the anterior cruciate ligament and we have begun his rehabilitation immediately. Angelo will see another specialist this week and we will then have a clearer picture around his timeline of recovery.”

Baptiste bargain

It now leaves Moyes a little short on options in defence. Yes, he does have Issa Diop and Craig Dawson as more than capable back-ups to play alongside Kurt Zouma, but in an ideal world, he’ll like to fill the available place in the squad.

January is still two months away and there’s no guarantee that the Italian colossus will return to the starting XI next year, so it could be wise to look at alternatives and they should look no further than the teenager who Ogbonna has backed to succeed after a pre-season win ove Wycombe Wanderers.

“He played really, really well and as a young player you can make one or two mistakes, but your behaviour has to be the right one, like Dec [Declan Rice] when he starts,” he told the club’s official website.

“Jamal has a lot of work still to do but he is composed. He is still young and has to take things step by step. This was just a pre-season game. He has to follow the senior players and the manager’s instructions and it’s good for him to have people he can look to.”

Meanwhile, Hammers legend Carlton Cole has compared him to Rio Ferdinand, claiming he’s a “massive prospect” to the ‘Irons Inside’ podcast. “He’s going to be the next Anton Ferdinand hopefully or the next Rio, so hopefully we can these boys on the right track and help them transition into being a professional footballer full-time.”

‘Tall, strong and comfortable in possession’ is how the club’s official website describes the 18-year-old sensation, whilst he claims both Virgil van Dijk and West Ham’s former defender and his academy mentor Matthew Upson as players he bases his game on.

Also dubbed a “monster” who is “one of the finest young prospects at the club” by former academy director Terry Westley to Claret & Hugh, it could be time to see Baptiste as the ‘fourth choice’ in the absence of Ogbonna.

Moyes is certainly a fan, so it would be an easy transition to make. It would mean that the club wouldn’t have to spend big in the upcoming winter transfer window and their finances can be used to bolster other positions, such as upfront.

Baptiste could save GSB millions.

Cricinfo previews the second ODI between South Africa and Zimbabwe in Centurion

The Preview by Judhajit Basu09-Nov-2009Match factsTuesday, November 10, 2009
Start time 14.30 pm (12.30GMT)Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy will be raring to go after their injury breaks•AFPBig pictureThe opening match went according to form and rankings, but South Africa still need to iron out a few wrinkles ahead of the bigger and sterner task against England. They are viewing this short series as a warm-up and for two thirds of the match in Benoni they performed impressively, but Zimbabwe didn’t fold meekly thanks to Tatenda Taibu’s fine century and South Africa will need to be at top gear going into the first Twenty20 against England on November 13.England have also issued the war cry after thumping wins against the Eagles and Warriors and Mickey Arthur has underlined the importance of being at “full strength” by next week. Albie Morkel and the fresh pair of Alviro Petersen, debutant Ryan McLaren all impressed during in Benoni and Arthur will have taken note of the performances as assesses his bench strength. JP Duminy is set to return from injury and Jacques Kallis may play as a specialist batsman so there is no shortage of top-order power. The promise that Zimbabwe had shown after the sweeping changes in administrative personnel and the creation of new domestic competitions seems to have been short lived, a fact nailed by five consecutive ODI defeats. However, Taibu’s performance and the 188-run stand with Stuart Matsikenyeri has given them something to cling to.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)
South Africa – WLWLL

Given his impressive showing with the Cape Cobras in the Champions League Twenty20, emerging as the highest scorer with 224 runs at 112.00, he will be raring to go in the 50-over format, where he has managed just two fifties this year. Considering the opposition, it may well be time for his maiden ODI century as well.Albie Morkel certainly lived up to his billing as a smash hitter, clubbing 50 off 39 balls in the last match. But it will be his bowling which will need to improve if he is to cement his place in the side as a very capable allrounder. How pleasing it is to see Tatenda Taibu back on the international stage. Even though he missed the greater part of the ODI series in Bangladesh, he showed his intent with a fluent hundred in Benoni. The innings showed he was keen to emerge from the negativity surrounding his run-ins with Zimbabwe Cricket, and with wicketkeeping responsibilities to boot, he has a pivotal role to play.Stats and triviaSouth Africa have an overwhelming 25-2 advantage in head-to-head matches against Zimbabwe. In Centurion, they have a 66.67% win record, winning 16 of the 24 matches they played.South Africa hold the record for the highest score on the ground, posting 392 for 6 against Pakistan in February 2007. Scores of 300 or more have occurred in nine matches, twice when South Africa played England in September this year during the Champions Trophy.Quotes”We did well because at one stage I did not think we would make 100 runs. Spurs make Brozovic approach

As per a report in the paper edition of Tuttosport, via Sport Witness, there has been a development in Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Inter Milan star Marcelo Brozovic.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing move…

The Croatia international is yet another one of Antonio Conte’s former Nerazzurri men who he personally wants to bring to north London alongside defender Stefan de Vrij.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As per recent updates, the 52-year-old wants Brozovic at Tottenham with TUTTOmercatoWEB even claiming that he is ‘ready’ to welcome the player with ‘open arms’.

This comes amid his 2022 contract situation at the San Siro, and despite Brozovic himself admitting he would like to extend, Tottenham and many other clubs are waiting in the wings ready to take full advantage if talks break down.

The Latest: Spurs make approach…

As per Tuttosport (via SW), Tottenham are one of the many clubs to make an approach to the player’s representatives alongside Manchester United, París Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich and even Newcastle United.

It is also believed that one of these clubs may have already offered Brozovic an €8 million-per-year (£6.7m) salary, which roughly translates to around £129,000-per-week.

The Verdict: What Spurs need?

Surprisingly, despite being a traditionally more defensive player, the 29-year-old could come as a temporary solution to fill the Christian Eriksen-shaped void.

The 70-cap star was remoulded as a playmaker at Inter last season whilst superstar duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min were the only Tottenham players to match or better some of his creative stats in their respective leagues.

Brozovic averaged the same amount of key passes per 90 in the final third as Kane (1.4) over 2020/2021 whilst racking up six assists, highlighting how he could make an impact for Tottenham further forward (WhoScored).

Former Inter Milan and Udinese boss Andrea Stramaccioni described Brozovic as a ‘very precious’ player for the Serie A giants and we believe he could become just as important under Conte in the Premier League.

Pakistan pushes for thaw in India ties

In the absence of any likely bilateral series, it appears the IPL’s third season could be the icebreaker

Osman Samiuddin05-Nov-2009Signs are emerging that Pakistan is pushing to normalise cricketing relations with India, after the meeting last week between PCB chairman Ijaz Butt and officials within the BCCI in India and, in the absence of any likely bilateral series, it appears the IPL’s third season could be the icebreaker. Pakistan’s board has cleared its players for the tournament, reversing a decision it took for the second season, and has received inquiries from the IPL on the status of its players.Pakistani players were not allowed to take part in this year’s edition of the IPL after their own government refused to give them permission to travel to India. The decision was based primarily on security concerns and whether or not Pakistan’s players would be safe in India in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks a year ago. The tournament was eventually shifted to South Africa for security reasons but Pakistan’s players were still not allowed to take part. However, the board is hoping the situation may be different this time round, indicating that permission has been granted to the players by the board and higher authorities. “The PCB has given permission to players to take part in the IPL,” Butt told Cricinfo. “Abdul Razzaq recently approached me and he has been given permission as well as others. Lalit Modi emailed to ask what the status of our players regarding IPL was and, when I met him in India, I told him the players were available and the relevant authorities had given permission.”Whether they get the opportunity to take part this time, however, is not in the hands of the PCB or the Pakistan government for clearance will have to come from the Indian government. The first push for a thaw in cricketing relations from the Indian side has come from its IPL franchises, not bound by political and geographical considerations, seeking simply the best players to take the field. Most IPL franchises were quick to seek the return of Pakistan players to the 2010 edition of the lucrative Twenty20 league after Pakistan won the ICC World Twenty20 in June. Modi, the IPL commissioner and BCCI vice-president, subsequently clarified that the IPL had no problems in letting Pakistani players participate, subject to government clearance from both sides; even if Pakistan has given them permission, ultimately the decision will be made by the Indian government.Florida as neutral venue?

Reports in Pakistan upon Butt’s arrival claimed that a series with India was scheduled on a neutral venue next year, possibly in the USA, a suggestion first mooted by Shashi Tharoor, Indian minister of state for external affairs. But no such thing has been discussed, Butt said, only that Florida might emerge on cricket’s map as a neutral venue at some point soon.

Eleven Pakistani players – including Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul, the stars of Pakistan’s World Twenty20 campaign – were recruited by the Kolkata, Rajasthan, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangalore franchises before the inaugural IPL. However, the franchises opted to retain the contracts of only four of them – Akmal and Tanvir (Rajasthan), Misbah-ul-Haq (Bangalore) and Gul (Kolkata) – after it became clear that they would not be able to play in the second season of the league following the Mumbai attacks. But players such as Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Aamer, Razzaq and Umar Akmal are likely to attract interest this time round, as is a revitalised Afridi who was dumped by the Deccan Chargers after a poor first season with them. That is as far as the door between the two boards will be nudged open for now. Hectic schedules for both teams means that it is unlikely there will be a bilateral series between them till at least 2011, Butt said, confirming what the BCCI said last week. “Right now it is too premature to give a time frame for a return to bilateral ties. Schedules are tight for both of us till 2011 and an appropriate window has to be found for the series. It will come out over the passage of time,” he said.Though it is still over a year away, the 2011 World Cup on the subcontinent could play a critical role in deciding which way the relationship goes thereafter. Concerns have been raised over whether or not Pakistan will play any of its matches in India; currently they are scheduled to play most of their games in Sri Lanka, but if they go far, then playing in India will be unavoidable. Butt said no discussions on the topic had taken place yet and was unwilling to comment on the possibility of Pakistan playing in India then, but it is likely to become a significant issue over the next year.

Newcastle make offer to Axel Witsel

An update has emerged on Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel regarding interest from Newcastle United.

What’s the talk?

According to TuttoJuve, the Magpies have tabled a contract offer for the Belgium international, with his deal due to expire at the end of the season.

The report claims Juventus are also interested in a swoop for the beast, with Newcastle offering him a contract worth £8.4m (€10m) per season.

Fans will be buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be buzzing to read that PIF are working hard to secure a deal for Witsel. They have the opportunity to land him on a pre-contract in January ahead of officially signing him in the summer, and this update suggests that they are serious about sealing a move.

The experienced midfielder could be a terrific addition to Eddie Howe’s side and help them take the next step to fighting in the top half of the Premier League table, provided they avoid relegation this term. He has played at the top level of the game for club and country and could provide an injection of quality into the Magpies’ squad.

Witsel has been capped a whopping 120 times by Belgium and has made 122 appearances for Dortmund to date, having also played 180 times for Zenit in Russia. He also has bags of Champions League and Europa League experience, showing that he knows what it takes to play at the pinnacle of club football as he has competed in the premier competitions.

The 32-year-old has averaged a career WhoScored rating of 7.00 and 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game, showing how remarkably consistent he has been over the years for his various clubs and for Belgium. This highlights the quality he could bring to Newcastle and shows why fans will surely be buzzing to read that the club have made an official contract offer to the midfield beast, who has proven that he can produce consistently impressive displays.

He has shown that he can play at the top level and he could be an important signing for the Magpies both in terms of his impact on and off the pitch. His aforementioned statistics highlight his on-field qualities, while his experience could also help the younger players off the pitch, and signing a player of his stature could potentially help PIF to attract more players to the club in the long run.

Rangers: Gio must axe Alfredo Morelos

Rangers manager Gio van Bronckhorst is set for his first match in charge of the Glasgow giants this week at Ibrox on Thursday night.

The Gers host Sparta Prague in the Europa League as they attempt to keep their dreams of progressing in the competition alive with a win.

He watched on from the stands as the club fell short of reaching the League Cup final over the weekend. They lost 3-1 to Hibernian, with Martin Doyle scoring a first-half hat-trick.

Time’s up

One player he must ruthlessly axe for this clash is Colombian forward Alfredo Morelos, who struggled badly in the defeat.

The £33k-per-week attacker endured a difficult afternoon in the loss to Hibernian and his display could call time on his place in the starting XI, for now.

Football Scotland reporter Calum Woodger handed him a dismal 3/10 match rating. He wrote: “A very poor outing from the Colombian who disappeared in a big game once again – abysmal. 3”

He has now scored seven goals in 21 appearances in all competitions, including four in 11 Premiership matches, and is yet to score in the group stages of the Europa League. Morelos has had nine shots in the four games in this competition and has not registered a single assist, highlighting his struggles in Europe.

His form in the Europa League and his ‘abysmal’ showing against Hibernian should result in van Bronckhorst axing him from the XI. Another player should be given the opportunity to show that they can lead the line for the Gers, as they look to beat the Czech outfit.

The frustrating part of Morelos’ recent showing is that he has previously shown his quality. Speaking anonymously to The Athletic in 2019, a Scottish Premiership player called him a ‘nightmare’ to defend against.

“There’s never a time when he’s walking about or not interested in the game. He’s always involved, whether that’s taking you away or dragging you closer to the ball.

“He’s kind of dropping deep now and going out wide. That’s a nightmare for defenders because he’s your player that you’re meant to be man-marking but then you’re dragged out of position and you’ve got midfield runners taking his space. That means you need to start talking to your full-backs and centre-mids to start swapping players, which makes it a lot more difficult.”

He also managed three goals and seven assists in ten Europa League games last season, proving that he does have the ability to make an impact at this level. However, something has gone wrong for him this term and spending this match on the bench could potentially give him the jolt he needs to buck up his act, which is why the Dutch coach must make this key decision.

Grayson Shillingford dies aged 65

The former West Indies fast bowler who played seven Tests between 1969 and 1972, has died aged 65 of cancer

Cricinfo staff24-Dec-2009Grayson Shillingford, the former West Indies fast bowler who played seven Tests between 1969 and 1972, has died aged 65 of cancer. Shillingford had been receiving treatment in Canada before returning to his native Dominica a month ago. He succumbed to the illness in Salisbury, in the country’s west coast, early on Wednesday morning.A brisk right-arm bowler with a peculiar outward-curving run up, Shillingford failed to establish himself in a West Indies side in transition in the late 1960s and early 1970s despite briefly being hailed as the successor to the legacy of Hall and Griffith. He was picked for the 1969 tour of England despite only making his first-class debut the previous winter and taking three wickets in three matches. He played against India in 1970-71 and New Zealand in 1971-72 but thereafter drifted out of the reckoning as Keith Boyce and Bernard Julien established themselves. He ended his Test career with 15 wickets at 35.80. He continued playing domestic cricket for the Windward Islands and latterly for the Combined Islands until 1978-79.Julian Hunte, the WICB president, said Shillingford was a pioneer and a true ambassador for his country and the region. Hunte added that he was a hero to many people in his native Dominica and throughout the Windwards.”He was one of those cricketers who had a passion for the game and served his country, the sub-region and the entire Caribbean proudly,” Hunte said. “He gave his all on the field and was respected and admired. He was totally dedicated and committed and gave a whole-hearted effort every time he took the field.”Off the field, he made an excellent contribution to the development of the game and helped to chart the framework for the advancement of the game in his homeland as well as the Windward Islands. He was a hero for many young men who grew up in Dominica and were fortunate enough, like he was, to play at a higher level. We hope that Shillingford’s shining example would be used by others to take the game forward.”The president and CEO of the West Indies Players Association Dinanath Ramnarine hailed Shillingford as “a model cricketer who displayed all those fine qualities both on and off the field that added luster to the game.”
